Dear Friends of the JCC, Welcome and thank you for joining us for the second annual Dancing with the JCC Stars, an evening to support our Scholarship Fund. Tonight we come together to celebrate the JCC and the meaningful effect our Center has on our community. It’s been fourteen years since we opened the doors of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC to the community. In that time, we have awarded more than $1,200,000 in scholarship funds to hundreds of families and individuals whose lives have been impacted in countless ways. The magnitude of this effort in our community cannot be measured. The reflections our members share with us are truly inspiring and keep us passionate about our mission and the work we do every day. Please read their testimonials published in this Journal. The JCC Scholarship Fund sends children to our preschool, and summer day camp, supports senior nutritional and exercise programs, and supports membership and programs for those less fortunate in our local community. Your attendance and contributions this evening, and all those who have contributed to this event in so many ways, help us to continue our important work of providing programs and services. Special thanks to our eight Volunteer Dancers - Randy Berkow, Stacey Glassman, Ken Kaus, Josh Leibner, Michael Melango, Lisa Nierenberg, Gary Shiman and Ellen Teller, along with their Arthur Murray Dance School professional partners, who practiced tirelessly together for this dance competition. In addition, we thank our dancers for the wonderful spirit they brought to this event and for the donations they brought in through family, friends and co-workers. Our deepest gratitude goes to our hardworking volunteer Board of Directors for their unwavering commitment to our JCC, to the Dancing with the JCC Stars Committee and, specifically, Caryn Kenin for her ongoing contributions as Committee Chair, and of course, to the talented and dedicated staff of our JCC. Last but certainly not least, this evening would not take place without you, our devoted JCC members, community members and donors. To you, we give a “standing ovation” for your ongoing support and passionate belief in our mission. We are so grateful to share this evening with you and we look forward to seeing you at our JCC! We hope you have a wonderful evening!
Kenneth Bernstein President, JCC Board of Directors

“I wanted to thank you for the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the JCC Camp Ruach this past summer. Our son had such a wonderful time -- it's all he talked about! The experience is one that he will not forget. You cannot imagine how much it means to know that there are organizations like yours helping families financially so that kids have an opportunity to participate in such a well organized camp that is truly about the kids.” “Camp Parent” “I can justifiably look back with joy on the day my husband and I stepped foot inside the JCC. We moved to Bridgewater in 2001 and found the JCC, and soon after, we both became members for its convenient location and its first-class facilities . I remember our first day at the JCC. We received a warm welcome from the staff who always gave their 100 percent to make us feel at home. We also joined the senior fitness program and enjoyed our workouts with the instructors who always kept us motivated with their funny stories and jokes. Besides utilizing the swimming pool and fitness center, we loved to come to the JCC for the family atmosphere and support from the staff. My husband cherished their friendly smiles when he was alive. In 2008, my husband became ill with jaw cancer. During his illness we received an incredible amount of support and kindness from the JCC staff. I can never thank them enough for their love, generosity, and thoughtfulness. My husband passed away in 2011, but we are so grateful to have shared so many moments and memories with our JCC family. Everybody, including my exercise buddies, gave me tremendous moral support to overcome my grief and start living again. To this day, I always keep extra minutes in my day to talk with them and they always cheer me up. I tell all my friends if they need a friend or family- join the JCC. My best wishes are always for the center and its staff.” “Senior Member” “Our very lucky children had the privilege of spending time together under the watchful eyes of their extremely talented teachers at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center. While they play, they learn the most important life lesson- how to get along. Our children are blessed with opportunities to make good choices about treating everyone with respect and kindness. Our hearts melted when, as a family, we read their class ‘book.’ It served as a window to peek into the world of our ‘Fabulous Fours’ and the accomplishments they achieved. We are so grateful that our daughter had been nurtured and loved in this amazing class!” “Pre-School Parent”
JCC Dancing Stars
Randy Berkow is a New Jersey native who grew up in Perth Amboy and Metuchen before moving to Bridgewater in 1988. He is best known for being the husband of Andrea and father of Rachel and Alex who spend far more time in the JCC fitness center than he does. The family has been members of the JCC since it opened in 1999. Three years ago, Andrea became the JCC’s Chief Financial Officer. The Berkows have been active members of Temple Sholom of Bridgewater since 1992. Randy has worked for Hess Corporation for many years and currently manages their Global IT operations. He enjoys helping his friends, including the JCC, with their PC problems. For many years Randy refused to even step foot on a dance floor. At the strong urging of Andrea, he went to one lesson at Arthur Murray after last year’s Dancing with the JCC Stars. Randy says, “Who knew that would lead to this?”
Stacey Glassman resides in Bridgewater with her two daughters, Paige and Emily. Stacey owns and operates Mail Perfect, a direct mail business located in Bridgewater. The Glassman family has been long standing members of the JCC and the girls have attended Camp Ruach since 2002. When Stacey was asked to participate in the second annual Dancing with the JCC Stars fundraising event, there was absolutely no hesitation on her part. “I’m in!” was her immediate response. Stacey loves to dance any chance she gets. In fact, when the music stops, Stacey doesn’t. She enjoys dancing with her family and friends and is really looking forward to adding ballroom dancing to her many skills on the dance floor. Stacey says it has always been important for her to be a wonderful role model for her daughters, and Dancing with the JCC Stars is a great way to show her girls that life is full of wonderful opportunities that need to be embraced with “optimism, enthusiasm, laughter and smiles.” Stacey is ecstatic about being a part of this fun-filled night to help raise money for The JCC Scholarship Fund and to dance the night away!
Ken Kaus was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He grew up in Linden, attending Catholic school through the 12th grade. Ken is the second of four children, uncle to two nieces and two nephews. He has been employed at the JCC since August 15, 2005, first as the Sports Director and now as the Web/Social Media Manager and After School Program Director. According to Ken, “The JCC has given me the opportunity to touch hundreds of lives and I hope that I’m providing a positive example to each one. I hope that example extends to this event. It is important to stand up for causes you believe in deeply and do what you can to support those causes.” Ken says he has no prior dance experience, with the exception of watching “many dance recitals by my two younger sisters as we were growing up.” He adds, “In fact, I have trouble clapping to the beat of the music.” Ken added… “In spite of my limited coordination and lack of rhythm, I decided to participate as a dancer at Dancing with the JCC Stars so that I can raise some money to help provide school and camp scholarships, Senior lunches and other assistance for people who rely on the community programs that the JCC provides.” “If I had to pick a favorite dance, I would probably choose something like a waltz or a tango. I could see myself pulling off an Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman).”
Josh Leibner was born in Cleveland but moved to Los Angeles when he was only a few months old. His family lived on a kibbutz in Israel for one year, when he was three years old, before moving back to LA where he grew up. He’s lived in San Francisco, Toronto, London, Dublin, Atlanta and the Washington, DC area, and has traveled or done business in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Africa. Josh says he has an amazing 12-year old who is a great athlete, student, musician and friend. After working in sales in the printing and computer industries, he entered the management consulting industry as a trainee. Thirty years later he developed an approach to the development of organizational strategy - and published a business bestseller - on Strategic Commitment, a proprietary methodology that helps executives build high levels of alignment and engagement to their strategic initiatives. His clients include many blue chip companies, and Josh takes pride in having long-term clients who consider him a confidant, advisor and good friend. According to Josh, a JCC Board Member, “We have been active members of the JCC since we first moved to Bridgewater in 1998.” His son attended the JCC’s pre-school and kindergarten and currently enjoys the swim club in the summer. It took Josh until last year to make ten free throws in a row. His son has bested him by more than 40 years in that achievement thanks to the time they get to spend together on the basketball court! Josh says his dance career began…“Well, never!” He enjoys dancing at parties, weddings and B’nai Mitzvahs, but until he started his lessons for this event he never knew any steps or moves. He adds that his primary aim when he dances is to “have some fun without embarrassing myself - or my dance partner. I guess my favorite form of dance is ‘feel-the-beat-and-don't-look-too-foolish’ - not sure if there's a more formal name for that.” One of his favorite quotes is…”Dance like nobody's watching.”- Satchel Paige
Michael Melango was born in Neptune, New Jersey, and after starting life in Belmar, Michael and his family relocated to Elizabeth. Michael attended Saint Joseph's grammar school in Roselle and later graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Westfield. After high school, Michael continued his education at Caldwell Community College, completing all courses for construction licensing and estimating. Michael is a licensed building inspector holding 4 DCA licenses with the State of New Jersey. He is a licensed lead tester and a State of New Jersey home inspector. He also holds a real-estate license with Coldwell Banker. Michael's father opened Melo Contractors, Inc. in 1964, and Michael became president of Melo in 1990. Now, Michael's son who graduated high school in June has joined the company and will be the third generation to continue the tradition. Michael's hobbies include wine making, exercising, biking, going to the beach and instructing group fitness classes at several gyms, including the JCC. None of these hobbies include dancing! Michael currently lives in Mountainside, New Jersey with his son Michael.
Lisa Nierenberg was born in New York, NY. She graduated from Hampshire College, Amherst, followed by a degree from Penn State Medical School, where she was part of the first graduating class of an experimental college in family practice. Lisa is a Penn State Medical School Board certified family physician. For the last 32 years she has been giving “cradle to grave” care to patients and their families in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. David Bunevich, Lisa’s husband and Past President of the JCC, and her daughters, Eve, Robin and Sarah, persuaded Lisa to participate in the second annual Dancing with the JCC Stars fundraising event. Lisa explains: “I am very committed to furthering education and providing scholarship funding. That's why I am putting myself out there to do this. I am a competent skier, swimmer and biker, Dancer?- I’m not so sure!”
Gary Shiman was born in London, England and moved to the “good old USA” in 1986 to go into a family business, and today with his brother-in-law, owns and operates Somerville Aluminum Inc., a home improvement company. Gary has been married for 20 years to his “beautiful” wife, Jill, who has been a member of the JCC “since growing up down the street.” The family has been members since the new building was built. Gary currently sits on the JCC Board of Directors and has been actively involved in the Golf Committee for the past four years. Both his children have been to school and camp at the JCC. Gary says his extensive dance background is night clubbing in Spain as a teenager, and that he has had no formal training in any dance whatsoever! LOL! His interests include spending great times with his family, including Hazel his four-year old English Bulldog, golfing, and riding his Harley motorcycle. All his current dance partners are undergoing foot surgery as he has stepped on their feet so many times! He’s optimistic that Arthur Murray Dance Studios will be able to rectify this problem.
Ellen Teller was born in Philadelphia but moved to Houston when she was 3 years old. She grew up in Houston and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio. She practiced law for many years in San Antonio and Houston as a litigator and Federal Administrative Attorney. She and her husband Scott (also from Houston) have been married for 26 “amazing” years and have three “beautiful” children: Alana (21), Hannah (17) and Andrew (14). Ellen and her family have lived in Bridgewater since 2001 and love the area and all the close friends that they call family, because their own family lives very far away. They are Star Members of the JCC and have been members since moving to the community. Currently, Ellen is a Restitution Attorney practicing in Bernardsville, NJ. She is also the President of Temple Sholom of Bridgewater. Ellen has no formal dance training or experience. The last dance class she took was in third grade when she had to quit because it conflicted with her Hebrew school schedule. However, practicing law has taught her to "dance" around the issues; being President of Temple Sholom keeps her on her "toes," and attending services every week keeps her in "shape!"
“I have worked at the JCC for the past seven years as a fitness instructor, personal trainer and fitness coordinator. I teach a variety of fitness classes including CXWORX, BodyPump, Spin and Senior Fitness. I love working at the JCC, as it is an extension of my family; from the staff to the members, it is a fantastic place to be. I have three children, Alex, Evan and Danielle; all three went to JCC Camp Ruach and both of the boys were counselors here. I have recently added a new career to my resume, real estate agent.” “I have been a part of the JCC family since my family moved here from Long Island. I truly enjoy giving back to good causes. I fundraise for the Special Olympics and participated in the Snow Bowl and the recent Plane Pull. I have also participated in fundraising events at the JCC including Texas Hold’em Tournaments and the Fit & Go Shari Pollak Fitness Fashion Show. I had the pleasure of participating as one of the dancers in the 2012 JCC Dancing With The Master of Ceremonies Stars and I had a blast!! I am thrilled to be involved in such a fantastic fundraiser two years in a row…this year as one of your Masters of Ceremonies. Cindy Wuensch, former Vice President of Rand Diversified, is thrilled to be your Master of Ceremony once again for the JCC Dancing with the JCC Stars Season 2 event. A native New Jersey resident, she has just relocated with her husband Jack to Hilton Head, SC. A bronze 2 Arthur Murray dance student, and former winner of a mirror ball trophy for a Dancing for Diabetes event, Cindy dances whenever the opportunity presents itself. An avid sports fan, she enjoys playing tennis and golf, and is a die-hard football fan. Cindy is involved with several different charities and has been a supporter of the JCC Golf Outing. She is a member of the JCC Dance committee, where she hopes our second year will be even more spectacular than the first and that we raise even more money. Cindy's brother and his family live in Bridgewater, and in case you see any resemblance, he is one of tonight's Cindy Wuensch Master of Ceremonies dancers. She is thrilled to be a part of the evening and hopes it will be a fun and successful event.
Our Esteemed Judges Emilio Garced: Emilio, along with his wife Michelle, has been the Owner-Operator of the two Arthur Murray Dance Centers of
Highland Park and Green Brook. Over the past 30-plus years, he has taught and developed thousands of dancers and has himself been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. He is looking forward to his first experience on the judging panel for tonight’s Dancing with the JCC Stars event. Jill Hirsch: Jill has more than 20 years experience as a certified competition and pageant judge for national competitions in the areas of dance and baton. She holds NJTA and vocational certifications, and has training from Dance Educators of America and Broadway Dance Center. She has won numerious dance awards and has performed in Atlantic City, Walt Disney World and RCCL cruises. Jill also has choreographed pageants, local theater productions and competitive teams. Beata Mihalo: Beata has been involved with the Arthur Murray Dance Centers for over 15 years. She also possesses much training and experience in the world of high fashion and modeling, so her dancing style has always reflected her sense of polish and flair! Her advice to dancers this evening: “Just get out there and have a lot of fun- enjoy the idea of entertaining everyone!” Dawn Van Ness: Dawn has been a dance teacher for the past 16 years. She has judged numerous elite dance teams auditions and she has been a judge for several “ Nutcracker” auditions. Dawn is the JCC Dance School Director and lives in Branchburg with her husband and two children.
The Professional Staff at The Arthur Murray Studio
MICHELLE GARCED, along with her husband Emilio, is co-owner of two Arthur Murray Dance Center locations in in Central New Jersey (Somerset and Middlesex counties). For more than 37 years she has been involved with ballroom dancing in one form or another. Whether developing dance professionals, coaching, competing, judging competitions, opening and then developing and operating The Studios, she has always loved her “work.” Especially close to her heart, however, is the fact that she has personally taught thousands of people how to dance over these many years, and feels enjoyment at having affected a positive change in their lives through the art of social and competitive ballroom dancing! JONATHAN DANESHPOUR is an Arthur Murray dance professional who specialized in teaching Salsa for many years before joining The Studios. While pursuing his graduate degree in Journalism, Jonathan continues to stay focused on always getting the best out of his dance students. He is a dedicated, trustworthy instructor who takes his responsibilities to give each student the value of progress and the fun of ballroom dancing very seriously, whether for social entertainment or performance. Jonathan is well-loved by staff and students alike, and always delivers on the Arthur Murray promise to “Walk In, Dance Out.” CHRISTINA GARCED is an Arthur Murray dance professional grew who up as a “studio brat” in her parents’ Studios. She trained from a young age in various styles of dance including modern, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop. Dancing and competing in both International and American Ballroom styles, Christina found herself addicted to the limelight and went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in English Theatre at NJCU. There she studied vocal performance, dance, and acting, and found that her exposure to other stage performance has helped to inspire and influence her ballroom training. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9- Dance Finalist, Christina decided to pursue her professional career in the American style because of its boundless, creative, and uninhibited nature. KAROL KALINOWSKI is an Arthur Murray dance professional who has been dancing and competing in ballroom dancing since he was a young boy. He is also a member of the Rutgers Ballroom Dance Team and is a wonderful addition to our dance family. Karol continues to train and compete with his amateur partner and has been consistently achieving top placements at all events. His students love his style, his elegant flair, as well as his very witty and positive attitude. Karol is a valued team member, sought-after instructor, and prized dance partner. KRISTIE KUO is an Arthur Murray dance professional who continues to compete in both International and American Ballroom styles. As a social dancer she realized how much she enjoyed performing and started her competitive career at the collegiate level. After she graduated from Rutgers University Kristie reflected fondly on her time with the Rutgers Ballroom Dance Team as a Vice President, member, and competition organizer, and realized that pursuing dance as a full-time profession is her true calling. She is following her love of dance as a committed competitor, entertainer, and ballroom instructor. Kristie’s students enjoy her upbeat approach to teaching whether in regular group classes, specialty workshops, or private sessions. LEO MORA is an Arthur Murray dance professional whose desire to learn the craft of Ballroom dancing was derived from his passion and admiration for the dance artists he observed from a young age. Leo was a street dancer who started training in classes as a student, but was recruited as an instructor after a very short time because of his natural talents and magnetic personality. He started his professional career at The Studios more than a decade ago and and continues to teach, train, and compete in both American Rhythm and American Smooth styles. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9-Dance Finalist, Leo hopes to inspire other hopeful competitors, aspiring instructors, and promising students to love the art of dance as much as he does. JAZMIN NOVOA is an Arthur Murray dance professional who has been dancing since she could pretty much walk. Growing up in her household meant that music and dancing were always present. Jazmin graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor’s degree in dance, specializing in Modern, African, and Ballet. She has choreographed numerous amateur, professional, and professional-amateur pieces in various dance forms. In her five years at The Studios she has competed in many Pro/Am competitions and won various top awards. Jazmin enjoys teaching and training all different types of students, whether learning for fun, weddings, or competition. ROSA PAREDES is an Arthur Murray dance professional who began dancing at a young age. As a versatile performer, enthusiastic instructor, and active competitor she is a fantastic new addition to The Studios. Rosa’s extensive training with champions such as Roberto Pagan, Maria Torres, and Diana McDonald has drawn her to specialize in Hustle, Theatre Arts, and Rhythm style dances. She holds several dance titles, including multiple First Place wins at the 2009 and 2011 World Hustle Championships (New Jersey). A graduate of Seton Hall, Rosa is staying close to her local roots and focuses her creative energies into actively competing and passionately teaching both social dancers and competitive students. MAIRA PINEDA is an Arthur Murray dance professional who comes to us from the worlds of Swing, Country Western, and Hustle dancing – most notably West Coast Swing (WCS). Maira has been involved in this specialized area of social dancing for over 15 years as an instructor and coach, as well as serving on the judging panel of many competitive Swing and Hustle dance events. A graduate of New York University (NYU), she has returned to her beloved East Coast and continues to work in various arenas of the performing arts profession. Maira possesses a wonderful, fun-spirited attitude, and is thrilled by the advancement every student makes.
The JCC would like to thank the Arthur Murray Dance Studios especially owners Emilio & Michelle Garced for the wonderful dance instruction they provided! We would also like to thank the Professional Dance Partners for their generous support. This evening would not have been possible without all of you.
