LETTER TO MEMBERS We are the J! As we look ahead to the new year, the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC winds up its first 15 years of operations. We look a lot different now than we did back when we were a "J without walls"... an outdoor pool and a camp. Offering hundreds of programs that reach everyone from tots to seniors, the JCC has become a vital asset to the Jewish and broader community. The JCC is committed to offering the best in fitness, cultural, social, recreational, and educational activities for all ages. We incorporate Jewish learning and living, identity and love of Israel into all that we do. It is important at this difficult time in the history of Israel that we show solidarity and support of the Jewish State. At the same time we are open to all views and embrace diversity - recognizing that Jewish communities benefit, and benefit from, their larger communities - while staying true to our core mission as a social service agency. We have made great strides in providing programming for those in our community with special needs. We want everyone in this community to know they are truly and openly welcome at this JCC. We are pleased to be hosting our first Prom for Adults with Special Needs in October, and our Special Olympics Swim Team will begin their second season next winter. We are developing a Special Needs Symposium to take place in 2015. Much more information to come. We have a dedicated staff that will assist in enhancing your experience here from taking an exercise class to enjoying a cultural event, from celebrating a holiday to expanding your mind. This is your Community Center!! The Membership Services Department, led by Membership Director Sarah Pollak, is designed to take care of any need that you may have. We strive to provide the best customer service and satisfaction possible. Your feedback is so important to us. Please feel free to use our comment box or send us an e-mail and know that our door is always open to discuss suggestions and or compliments!! So just what do our next 15 years have in store? That depends on you. With your support and help, the JCC can build on its past success as a "public square" for diverse Jewish life in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. Please volunteer to serve on a committee, suggest a program... pitch in and be committed to making this place the best it can be. There are so many opportunities for you to "belong" and help make a difference based on your interests and experiences. What's most important is that you belong. We are only limited by our imaginations as we head toward the next 15 years. We hope you will join us at these upcoming special events we have planned this fall...all in support of our JCC Scholarship Fund: Dog Day (Sunday, September 7 from 10am-1pm); Mah Jongg Tournament (Sunday, October 26 at 8:45am); Texas Hold'em (Monday, October 27 at 6:45pm) and Dancing with the Stars 3 (Saturday, November 22 at 7pm). Come out...socialize with friends, and be a part of this great place that is...the J!

Curriculum Our state certified and licensed teachers plan and develop a language rich environment that promotes each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth. Daily schedules include active and quiet times, gross and fine motor activites that are both staff and child initiated. Our children play in our beautiful, fenced outdoor playground, as weather permits. Through project-learning, children explore their interests such as dinosaurs, outer space or ocean science. Children are surrounded by books, literacy and exposure to the alphabet to prepare them for reading proficiency. Manipulatives and games reinforce number ability and concepts. Fine motor skills are built through hands on activites and writing. Our school celebrates all of the Jewish holidays and traditions throughout the year and teaches about Israel. Special Needs

Programs to enhance the lives of people needing just a little more.

JCC Rising Tide Swim Team The JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team is a volunteer organization that seeks to introduce individuals with special needs to the wonders of swimming. As part of Special Olympics New Jersey Somerset County Area 10 we compete in three swim meets throughout the season: county, area, and state. We seek to provide an enriching and welcoming environment for swimmers with special needs ages 10, and up. Athletes participating in this program should have a basic knowledge of swimming and be able to comfortably swim one length (25 yards) of freestyle and one length (25 yards) of backstroke. Practices will be held on Sunday mornings from 10:30-11:30am at the JCC beginning October 5th, 2014. If you or an athlete is interested in joining please contact Stephanie Johnson, Head Coach/Local Training Program Coordinator at 908-7256994 X230 or SJohnson@ssbjcc.org.

Special Needs Swimming Skills Program

We are pleased to announce this new program for our younger swimmers (ages 3-12) with special needs looking to explore the joys of water. This program will be directly supervised by Paulette Kirchner, a public school special education teacher for 27 years and is under the direction of Stephanie Johnson, Aquatics Director/Special Olympics Local Training Program Coordinator. These lessons will be taught on a one on one basis. Lessons include instruction on how to float independently and with a device, how to control breathing, kicking, basic paddling, front crawl, back stroke, and jumping/diving into the pool. Participants will also receive special attention and instruction that may help develop competency in the water as well as improve overall coordination, strength, endurance, range of movement, as well as social and attending behaviors. Pre-requisites for the course

Attendance is mandatory at all scheduled dates for the course. No exceptions will be made for personal conflicts of any nature. If you cannot make a scheduled date of your course, we suggest you enroll in another course at a later date. All class fees include the costs of course materials such as books, pocket masks and certification cards. All materials are distributed on the first day of the class; however, you can have your materials sent to you prior to the start of the course for an additional fee of $15. If you would like this option, please indicate so at the time of registration. All materials must be returned UNMARKED in order to receive a full refund, otherwise you will be charged for the course materials.

Pretests

Some American Red Cross courses such as the Lifeguard Training and WSI courses, require a pretest as part of the course. These pretests typically take place the first scheduled day of the course. Please remember this pretest is MANDATORY and failure to attend will result in a failure of the course with NO refund.

Proof of Age

The American Red Cross mandates that candidates show valid proof of age by the second class meeting for those courses that have minimum age requirements. We are not permitted to waive the minimum age requirements for any of our training courses.

Certification/Completion of Course

Although our goal as instructors is to help students successfully complete their certification goals, students are sometimes not able to adequately complete the stated requirements for the course. Payment of the course fee and participation in class does not guarantee certification; students must successfully complete all course objectives in order to be certified. If you and/or your child have questions or concerns regarding your/their ability to pass this course, please contact the Aquatics Department PRIOR to registering.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

The JCC Bridgewater Tide is a competitive, year round swim team that competes in local, state and national USA Swimming meets. The Tide provides instruction and training to a variety of skill levels for athletes ages 6-18. The Tide program focuses on all facets of the athletes’ development, from improving technique and speed to good sportsmanship, work ethic and nutrition. The National and Gold practice groups are by invitation only and require complete commitment by the swimmers. Swimmers in National and Gold will train 6-8 times a week, with intense workouts that focus on stroke refinement, speed, endurance and race strategy. Diamond is for Middle School and High School swimmers who are not ready to make the commitment required for Gold or National. This group gives the swimmers rigorous workouts and the foundations needed for senior level swimming. The Tidal Waves, Bronze, and Silver groups practice 3-4 days a week and focus on the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes. In addition to working on technique, the age group swimmers will also begin to develop speed and sound racing strategies. All swimmers are expected to compete in USA Swimming meets approximately one weekend a month. Practices begin September 8.

Then, not only does the bank deny fault, they also declare they’ll repossess the boy’s home. Pushed to the brink, the boy must find money fast, and so decides to rob the bank that’s offended him.
