Dear Friends...

Dear Friends, Welcome and Thank You for joining us for the Fourth Annual Dancing with the JCC Stars!!! Each year, at this time we bring to light the mission of our Jewish Community Center, which is to enrich the lives of our community members. The JCC often transcends that mission becoming a necessity in the lives of our community members. Whether it is child care so a parent can work or a hot meal for our seniors, the services we provide are an important part of the daily lives of those that utilize our center. This evening was designed to support our Scholarship Fund. This year we celebrate our sixteenth year, an achievement we can all be very proud of and one we could not have reached without community support. We looked back in our archives and were struck by the fact that our JCC has done extraordinary things to help this community. The efforts of our dedicated and inspirational Board Members, staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors provide us with numerous successes never thought possible.

We want to recognize our eight volunteer dancers: Howard Astrin, Geoff Feinstein, Robyn Goldstein, Paulette Kirchner, Eileen Loughnane, Jane Schneiderman, Marjorie Slass, Scott Teller, along with their Arthur Murray Dance School Professional partners. We thank all of you for the extraordinary time and effort you have given to ensure that this event is a success. Each and every one of the dancers gave their all -- not only to mastering their dance moves -- but also to Fundraising. We thank their families, friends and business associates who supported them by being here tonight and through placing ads and well wishes in this Journal.

Our deepest appreciation goes to our JCC Stars Committee, and specifically Caryn Kenin, for their continued commitment to the J. By being part of this event and connecting with the JCC, you have all found a meaningful way to touch other people’s lives.

As this year comes to an end, we thank you for helping us carry on our long tradition of enriching lives and meeting the needs of our Community, while also keeping alive Judaic traditions and teachings in which our programs are rooted. We are truly blessed with a multitude of caring and compassionate friends in our community.

About the JCC

The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian agency serving more than 5,000 residents of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. We first opened our doors to the community in December 1999. The JCC offers the community fitness, recreational, social, educational and cultural programs for individuals of all ages. The JCC facility includes a fitness center, indoor pool, outdoor pool (with dome enclosure during the off season), gymnasium, group fitness studios and a summer swim club. The JCC Blaustein Early Childhood Center offers programs for children ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten. JCC Camp Ruach, our 8-week summer day camp, provides programs for children ages 15 months through 9th grade. J-Crew is the JCC’s After School Program for Grades K-6.

THE JCC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The JCC serves as a Jewish social service agency and provides scholarship assistance to those in need.

Membership dues and program fees alone do not support the operation of our Center. We greatly depend on the generosity of our members and friends in the community whom enable us to fulfill our mission.

The JCC Camp and Preschool Scholarship Program makes it possible for children and teens to participate in high-quality JCC programs that they could not otherwise afford. Each year the JCC awards over $210,000 in scholarship aid, including assistance to families with financial limitations so they could send their children to JCC Camp Ruach and The Blaustein Early Childhood Center. Scholarship funds are also provided to families and individuals who require assistance for membership. In addition, the JCC Scholarship Fund provides support services to seniors in the community including a kosher nutritional lunch, exercise, cultural programming and the opportunity to socialize with one another. The JCC is pleased to offer programs for children and adults with Special Needs and hosts the Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team.

The JCC has awarded more than $2 million in financial assistance since we opened our doors in 1999.

I just wanted send a note to thank you and your fabulous staff for the amazing camp experience that Jessica had over the past two weeks. Initially, the night before camp started, she was extremely anxious. She told her dad “I have so much going around in my head”. It ranged from “what if I don't like taking the bus to what if I don't pass the swim test to be able to swim in the deep end of the pool?” We reassured her that everything would be okay and we came up with solutions to her questions. Then, the next morning, she couldn't get on the bus fast enough!!!! She never looked back and came home every day with a huge smile on her face and great stories to tell us about her adventures at camp (which may I add, she has never been so detailed and animated when telling us something). Her proudest moment was when she came home to show us her orange bracelet that meant she could swim in the deep end of the pool!!! When plans changed at camp, she rolled with it, again, something we have been working on, but had not mastered until camp. This camp experience helped Jessica with her independence and bringing her out of her “world” a little more. Camp has definitely taken Jessica to the next level in her journey. Again, we cannot thank you and your staff enough.

We are so looking forward to sending her next year.

Sherri Strauss, Jessica’s Mother My daughter, Ariel, absolutely loves attending school every day at the JCC Blaustein Early Childhood Center.

Everything about the school has far exceeded my expectations. Her classroom is always full of excitement and new lessons such the rain forests, the planets and butterflies. She also has a deeper understanding of the Jewish faith, holidays and traditions. She knows why we celebrate and what makes each holiday important.

Ariel really looks forward to every Friday morning for Shabbat where the entire school gets to sing and "set the table." She is receiving an excellent education and the school is full of love and warmth. We are always treated like family and the first and last thing Ariel does each day is to give big hugs to her teachers and friends! She has established so many wonderful relationships and now has the confidence she needs to enter kindergarten next year. The school has the perfect balance of a nurturing environment with the right amount of academics. Ariel writes her name beautifully and she is so proud of her accomplishments. Her teachers are incredible assets and are so dedicated to the children and have tremendous love for their jobs. We are always greeted with a smile!

Nicole Calicchio, Ariel’s Mother I just want you to know what the Jewish Community Center means to me. I relocated from Florida to Bridgewater to be near my family. It was a difficult decision to leave what was familiar to me and acquaint myself with new surroundings and make new friends. My enjoyment of playing Mah Jongg prompted me to find a group to play with, and my daughter suggested I check out the JCC. So one Monday morning in October 2009, I held my breath and entered the JCC. The room was humming with gay chatter, everyone seemed to know one another, and I meekly asked if I can play. Joyfully, a woman welcomed me and I found myself sitting with others. Little did I know that I would meet extraordinary ladies with whom I would form close and lasting friendships. I eagerly look forward to each Monday with joy. My heartfelt thanks to the JCC and to the entire staff who enriches our lives.

Eileen Cooper We sent our grandson Max to Camp Ruach for the entire summer and it was, in his words, “THE GREATEST SUMMER EVER!” It was a fantastic experience for him. Since both parents work, and the camp provided an after camp program each day, it was great for them also. The activities were incredible, the counselors were terrific and his parents have already signed him up for next year for the entire summer. Please let everyone involved with the camp know how much our entire family and Max appreciate all of the hard work and planning that must have gone in to making the camp such a sensational experience for Max. Master of Ceremonies Randy Berkow, 2013 Mirror Ball Trophy Winner, is a New Jersey native who grew up in Perth Amboy and Metuchen before moving to Bridgewater in 1988. He is best known for being the husband of Andrea and father of Rachel and Alex. The Berkow family have been members of the JCC since it opened in 1999. Randy’s wife, Andrea is the JCC’s Chief Financial Officer. The Berkows are active members of Temple Sholom.

Randy has worked for Hess Corporation for many years and currently manages their Global IT operations. After winning The 2013 Dancing with the JCC Stars competition, he and Andrea have continued taking dance lessons together. Randy is happy to return as Emcee of tonight’s event!

Randy Berkow

Our Esteemed Judges Michelle Garced, along with her husband Emilio, is co-owner of two Arthur Murray Dance Center locations in Central New Jersey (Somerset and Middlesex Counties). For more than 38 years she has been involved with ballroom dancing in one form or another. Whether developing dance professionals, coaching, competing, judging competitions, opening and then developing and operating The Studios, she has always loved her “work.” Especially close to her heart, however, is the fact that she has personally taught thousands of people how to dance over many years, and feels enjoyment at having affected a positive change in their lives through the art of social and competitive ballroom dancing!

Christina Garced is an Arthur Murray dance professional who grew up as a “studio brat” in her parents’ Studios. She trained from a young age in various styles of dance including modern, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop. Dancing and competing in both International and American Ballroom styles, Christina found herself addicted to the limelight and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in English Theatre at NJCU. There she studied vocal performance, dance, and acting, and found that her exposure to other stage performance has helped to inspire and influence her ballroom training. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9- Dance Finalist, Christina decided to pursue her professional career in the American style because of its boundless, creative and uninhibited nature. This Fall she married her professional dance partner, Leo Mora.

Jill Hirsch has more than 20 years experience as a certified competition and pageant judge for national competitions in the areas of dance and baton. She holds NJTA and vocational certifications, and has training from Dance Educators of America and Broadway Dance Center. She has won numerous dance awards and has performed in Atlantic City, Walt Disney World and RCCL cruises. Jill also has choreographed pageants, local theater productions and competitive teams.

Dawn Van Ness has been a dance teacher for the past 17 years. She has judged numerous elite dance teams auditions and she has been a judge for several “ Nutcracker” auditions. Dawn is the JCC Dance School Director and Assistant Early Childhood Center Director and lives in Branchburg with her husband and two children.

Howard Astrin was born and raised in North Plainfield, NJ. Howard attended the JEC in Elizabeth and went on to Post University. Settling back in New Jersey, Howard and his wife, Dena, live in Basking Ridge with their two children Brett (11) and Jami (9) and their dog Trevor (2). Jami has been a camper at Camp Ruach for many years and Howard loves to shoot hoops with his son at the “J”.

Howard is a lighting and design professional who has offered his expertise in residential and commercial indoor and outdoor lighting to the local community for 25 years.

He owns and operates Luxe Light Studio in Fairfield, NJ. In Howard’s spare time, he loves to play golf and coach his children’s sports teams.

Howard also loves to dance and is looking forward to having a great time for a great cause! He is proud to be part of the 4th Dancing With The Stars at the JCC, and his kids can’t wait to cheer him on!

Geoff was born in New York and raised on the “tough streets” of Monmouth County.

After four years at Boston University, he came back to New Jersey and soon after met his bride of 17 years, Adena. They have 3 fabulous kids, all JCC Preschool Graduates by the way…Lauryn 14, Ari 11 and Reid 7. Geoff is a founding partner of The Jeffrey Matthews Financial Group with offices in New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida.

Geoff and his family are Star Members of the JCC and have been active here at the JCC since it opened its doors. The JCC is truly their Second Home. Geoff has worked on several JCC committees and will be President of the JCC in just 5 years. Geoff is also Chair of the Texas Hold ‘em Tournament Committee, so be sure to come out and play here at the JCC !

Geoff would like to thank his family and friends for supporting him tonight. Geoff has no prior dancing ability but he is always up for having some fun. He is proud to be out of his comfort zone tonight in order to help the JCC with this great fundraiser.

Geoff Feinstein

Robyn Goldstein was raised in Bridgewater and now lives in Branchburg with her husband, Eli and their two boys, Seth (3) and Justin (1). This past summer was the first summer for the boys to attend JCC Camp Ruach and they loved every minute of it! In the fall they continued on in the Blaustein Early Childhood Center. You may recognize her husband, Eli from around the J. He is the head of Youth Services and also known as ‘The Postman,’ -- winner of Season 3 Dancing with the JCC Stars.

Robyn graduated from Salisbury University and is a third generation financial advisor in the family business, ACA/Prudent Investors Planning Corp. She is a member of Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook where she is President Emeritus and remains on the Executive Board.

In her single days, Robyn was a regular dancer at the Colorado Café in Watchung. You would see her on the dance floor all night! But as she has come to realize, there is a big difference between country line dancing and what you will see at Dancing with the JCC Stars!

Robyn has seen what great experiences and opportunities the JCC offers.

By participating in this year’s Dancing with the JCC Stars, Robyn is raising money in support of the Scholarship Fund to ensure that families can take advantage of all that the J has to offer.

Paulette lives in Somerville with her husband, Jim and their amazing children Jimmy, Kelsey, Paul and daughter-in-law to be, Amanda. She is an educator in Somerset for the past 31 years. Paulette says her passion is to work with children and “making a difference”, and her motto when working with children is “It’s all about the kids”.

Paulette loves to dance at weddings and can usually be seen on the dance floor, which is a trait she learned from her mother, who always enjoyed dancing. When asked to perform with Dancing with the Stars, she thought about it for a quick second and knew she was up for the challenge to do it… for the kids!

“As an advocate for all children, I welcome the opportunity to dance to provide funding for scholarships for families.”

In addition to teaching, Paulette has worked at the JCC for the past 6 years. At the J, she is known as “Ms. Paulette” to all her swimmers. She started the JCC’s Special Needs Swimming Skills Program as a way to give back to the community. Paulette is on the committee that plans the Prom for Adults with Special Needs.

Eileen Loughnane is the Event Manager for Peapack-Gladstone Bank, responsible for all V.I.P. corporate events. She has a diverse background in event planning, program development, fundraising, strategic planning, non-profits and community involvement. Eileen and her husband, Phil have six children together and four grandsons.

They reside in Basking Ridge with their adorable dog, Cody Bear.

Eileen loves to dance and claims she danced before she could walk. She has taught hundreds, maybe thousands, of children how to dance, sing and do gymnastics. Eileen danced in two Super Bowl halftime shows and was featured as Carmen Miranda in one of these shows! Eileen was also the assistant choreographer, lead dancer and singer for the international, educational group Up With People. Eileen began her career with Up With People doing PR and coordinating the group’s performances around the world. She will only say she danced long before Janet Jackson’s costume malfunction!

Eileen still teaches dance to children at the Madison Montessori School but has long (emphasis on long!) since retired from dancing on stage. Her expertise has never been ballroom dancing, but growing up in a Latin family gave her all the cha cha experience she needed. She says, “The cha cha maybe the foundation of ballroom Latin dances.”

Eileen is currently the President of the Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce, the President of SWIM, Inc. (non-profit organization), the past President of the Bernardsville Rotary Club (serving the Somerset Hills area), past board member of Farmstead Arts, past committee member for the Bernards Township Pathways Parks and Recreation and a graduate of Leadership Somerset 2010.

Jane has been involved with the JCC since before the building opened! Her father-in-law, Al Levine, asked Jane and her husband, Josh to be on the JCC Fitness Committee. Little did she know at that time that she would eventually be a fitness instructor on staff at the JCC, teaching Spin, BODYCOMBAT, BODYVIVE, BODYPUMP and Fitground. Jane also loves challenging herself doing endurance races like half marathons and triathlons. She says, “Having a goal to work towards is a great motivator!”

The JCC is truly a “home away from their Bridgewater home” for Jane and her family.

Her two sons, Jonah (14) and Max(11), both went to the JCC preschool. During that time and after she was a substitute teacher at the school and loved working with the kids. Jane is also on the JCC 5K committee. Jane and Josh are both from Watchung, but didn’t meet until their college summers working at camp. They have been married and living in Bridgewater for 17 years.

Jane Schneiderman

Although Jane remembers taking dance classes as a young girl, she hated the performances and being on stage because she was so shy. Jane knows she is in good hands with her professional partner, Leo. She is hoping that with this performance for Dancing with the JCC Stars that her fitness level will help her get through the one and a half minutes of the routine, which she says is “harder than you think”.

“This dance thing is all new to me, but I am hoping all the great dances I have done with my dad, as my partner, will help!”

Marjorie Slass was raised in Fair Lawn, New Jersey and has been residing in Warren, for the past 13 years. She has been married for 21 years to her husband Jonathan, who is a member of the JCC Board of Directors. They have three children: Emily (19), Jenny (16) and Michael (12).

Marjorie graduated from Rutgers College as a teacher and soon after spent many years as a full-time mom. Later she decided to go back to school as a non-traditional student, and has earned two masters degrees. Currently Marjorie is in her fifth and final year of Kean University’s Doctoral Program in Clinical and School Psychology.

She will be earning her doctorate in 2016. Marjorie is also involved in Temple Sholom, recently serving on the Board of Trustees and is currently a member of the Ritual Committee.

JCC Dancing with the Stars will be Marjorie’s dancing debut. She has never danced before and she is learning everything she knows from her professional dance partner Bob. She thanks Bob for creating such a positive dancing experience for her.

Marjorie Slass

Scott was raised in Houston, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin.

He has worked his way up the east coast working for Chubb Personal Insurance.

Scott and his family settled in Bridgewater in 2001. Finding a community with a synagogue and a JCC was particularly important and the JCC was an integral part of the decision to move to the community.

Scott is married to Ellen (DWTS 2013!) and they have three children; Alana (24), 4th grade teacher in Nashville, TN; Hannah (19), sophomore at the University of Wisconsin; and Andrew (16), sophomore at Bridgewater Raritan High School.

Scott and his family are Star Members of the JCC and have been active members using the fitness facilities and pool. Scott is currently the Financial Secretary of Temple Sholom.

Scott Teller

Scott saw how much fun his wife had training and competing in Season 2, and was inspired to one day dance as well. Here’s hoping that a Teller family member finally brings home the mirror ball trophy! His dance will be a tribute to his adopted home state of New Jersey.

The Professional Staff at The Arthur Murray Studios BOB GAI is a native of Haiti, where many parents encourage their children to learn social and competitive dancing. Bob was encouraged by his parents. He has a great background in jazz, lyrical, ballet and Haitian folk dancing. He moved to the United States in 2006 and continued his learning, training, studies and passion for dance. Bob’s students love his energy, teaching approach, flair and positive attitude. He inspires others both on and off the dance color to love the art of dance as much as he does.

KAROL KALINOWSKI is an Arthur Murray dance professional who has been dancing and competing in ballroom dancing since he was a young boy. He is a wonderful addition to the Green Brook dance family. Karol continues to train and compete with Rosa Paredes his professional partner and they have been consistently achieving top placements at all professional events. Most recently Karol and Rosa competed against 41 couples in Las Vegas at the Superama - Rising Stars Rhythm Event and placed third.

His students love his style,his elegant flair, as well as his very witty and positive attitude. Karol is a valued team member and a prized dance partner.

LEO MORA is an Arthur Murray dance professional whose desire to learn the craft of Ballroom dancing was derived from his passion and admiration for the dance artists he observed from a young age. Leo was a street dancer who started training in classes as a student, but was recruited as an instructor after a very short time because of his natural talents and magnetic personality. He started his professional career at The Studios more than a decade ago and and continues to teach, train, and compete in both American Rhythm and American Smooth styles. Currently ranked as a United States Dance Championships 9-Dance Finalist, Leo hopes to inspire other hopeful competitors, aspiring instructors, and promising students to love the art of dance as much as he does. This fall, Leo married his professional dance partner, Christina Garced . They are a breath taking couple on the dance floor.

Leo and Christina competed at the Arthur Murray Superama in Las Vegas in October and won First Place in the 9 Dance United States Championship. We wish Leo and Christina happiness and success in their personal as well as professional lives together.

ROSA PAREDES is an Arthur Murray dance professional who began dancing at a young age. As a versatile performer, enthusiastic instructor, and active competitor, she is a fantastic addition to The Studios. Rosa’s extensive training with champions such as Roberto Pagan, Maria Torres, and Diana McDonald has drawn her to specialize in Hustle, Theatre Arts and Rhythm style dances.

She holds several dance titles, including multiple First Place wins at the 2009 and 2011 World Hustle Championships (New Jersey).

A graduate of Seton Hall, Rosa is staying close to her local roots and focuses her creative energies into actively competing and passionately teaching both social dancers and competitive students. Most recently Rosa has partnered with Karol Kalinowski to compete in Arthur Murray's Rising Stars Professional Rhythm Events. They are an exciting pair to watch, and the entire studio is so proud of their accomplishments.

MAIRA PINEDA is an Arthur Murray dance professional who comes to Arthur Murray from the worlds of Swing, Country Western, and Hustle dancing – most notably West Coast Swing (WCS). Maira has been involved in this specialized area of social dancing for over 15 years as an instructor and coach, as well as serving on the judging panel of many competitive Swing and Hustle dance events. A graduate of New York University (NYU), she continues to work in various arenas of the performing arts profession. Maira possesses a wonderful, fun-spirited attitude, and is thrilled by the advancement every student makes.

JONATHAN VASQUEZ affectionately known among the students and staff as “Johnny”, comes to Arthur Murray from the world of hip hop and break dancing. Jonny is filled with the love of music and dance, and he proudly expresses his style from his heart and soul. Johnny is the newest member of the Arthur Murray Dance Family, and he is doing a fantastic job of shining brightly in his role as an Arthur Murray Dance Professional.
