Welcome to Camp Ruach!

JCC Camp Ruach is an extraordinary day camp located at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center on over 14 beautiful acres of land. Our 8-week program offers campers ages 15 months through grade 9 a funfilled summer!

JCC Camp Ruach is dedicated to your child’s safety and wellbeing. We know your child will have a fantastic summer through our supportive and nurturing environment while participating in a wide variety of activities and dynamic programs we offer. Each week the campers take part in special events such as: Entertainment, Camp Carnival, JCC Maccabi Games (Camp Olympics), Camp Show and more! Summertime is an opportunity for children to play, experiment and grow.

K’ton campers comprise their own unit where they receive individual programming and attention to meet their specific needs.

K’ton campers receive a wide variety of age-appropriate programming and activities. The campers have a nice combination of both outdoor and indoor camp time. We offer various naptime options and welcome non-potty trained children! Stacey Herman, the K’ton Unit Head leads an amazing staff of highly trained and qualified adults and assistants. Many of them work year round in our preschool and they all create a bond with the children that make JCC Camp Ruach their home for the summer.

Campers Entering Grades 1 – 3

Age Groups

Once campers reach first grade they are ready for our Gadol unit.

Gadol campers enjoy a balance of all different activities utilizing all of our outdoor camp grounds.

Gadol Campers are also able to choose from a list of electives to give them more of a personalized schedule and a chance to explore new activities. The High Ropes Course, Mini-Golf Course, Skateboard Park, Musical Theatre Program and Specialized Sports Clinics are among some of the favorites. Sandi Arnold, our Gadol Unit Head along with a majority of the staff continue year after year in this unit because they love working with the campers and each other. JCC Camp Ruach becomes both the camper’s and staff’s home for the summer.

The Gadol campers are in camp from 9am –4pm

Early and Late Stay options are available. Early arrival begins at 7:30am and late stay is until 6pm.

There is no busing for Early or Late Stay.

Busing is available (at no extra cost).

Our Gadol Unit is grouped according to age and gender (although many activities are with other groups). On average, there are about 15 campers per group with 3 counselors. 1 Senior Counselor (18 years or older), 1 Junior Counselor (entering 11th or 12th grade) and 1 CIT (Counselor in Training, entering 10th grade).

Campers Entering Grades 4 - 6

This unit empowers the campers to create part of their schedule and have some independence.

Two days a week, Tzahov Campers go on all inclusive day trips including a 1-night overnight. Three days a week the campers participate in a combination of group activities as well as electives. Tzahov Campers also have the opportunity to “try out” sleep away camp for one Monday – Friday Week at the NJY Resident Camp in Milford, PA for an additional fee. Michele Hecht is returning as our Tzahov Unit Head. Michele was the Tzahov Unit head in 2009 & 2010. We are so excited to have her back again.

Michele goes on all trips with this unit. The staff in this unit is comprised of many college graduates who love spending their summers year after year with our campers. Our camp has become their home for the summer too!

Tzahov campers are on-site three days and enjoy two-day trips per week.

Tzahov Unit has 1 overnight at the NJY Resident Camp.

Busing is available (at no extra cost) for the 9am and 4pm schedule.

Road Rulz

Campers Entering Grades 7 - 9

Age Groups

Road Rulz consists of day trips, multiple overnights and 2 week-long trips.

Road Rulz is our teen travel program for campers entering grades 7-9.

These campers have the experience of traveling every day on a combination of day, one night and 4-5 night overnight trips. Jenn Deitrich is the Unit Head. She and her staff work throughout the year to make Road Rulz the teen’s home for the summer.

Road Rulz Schedule: Many Road Rulz trips leave earlier in the morning and do not return until early evening.

Road Rulz campers are on the road everyday.

Busing is available for Road Rulz campers (at no extra cost) for their 9am-4pm days only.

Road Rulz Staff: Road Rulz counselors are all 21 years or older.

Age Groups

Leadership in Training (LIT) Leadership in Training Program (LIT) combines learning to be a leader in the community through community service, learning how to be a great counselor, volunteering with the campers and going on 1 fun trip a week.

The campers themselves have a lot to do with the planning of this program to make it just right for them! Rob Mangel is the LIT Unit Head. Rob has worked in our Tzahov Unit for the past 3 summers and he currently staffs our afterschool program. Rob is also a teacher in Manville working with elementary age children.

4 days a week, Monday-Thursday, available for 4, 5 or 6 weeks

Combine community service, learning to be a great counselor and having fun!

Limited Space: 20 kids

In the 3 onsite days, you will have time with an assigned group, go through training on being a leader, participate in a community service project, and be given swim and break time.

Camper receives $50 pay after completing the 4-week program

I have been in camp since I was 3 years old; first at a day camp, then sleep-away and then as a staff member. This will be my 13th summer at this camp and before that I worked at another JCC camp. As you can see, I love camp! It has always been an important part of my family’s life. My husband also went to camp and worked at one for a large part of his life and now my children are growing up at camp as well. Don’t’ be surprised to see me singing at Shabbat, having a cake fight, or dressing up as one of the weekly themes. I can’t wait to have a great summer with all of you!

My name is Lauren but you may hear me referred to as “Panic” around camp. This comes from my last name, not my personality!

I started working at Camp Ruach as the Transportation Coordinator 7 summers ago. After 2 years in that position, I became the Assistant Camp Director. I have a son Sam and a daughter Nikki who have both been coming to camp here for most of their lives. They, like I, love camp and can’t imagine spending our summers anywhere but Camp Ruach!! It is our “home for the summer.”

Our campers range in age from 15 months to 9th grade

What are the ages of the counselors?

Different age campers are assigned different age counselors.

Toddlers and Preschool campers have adults (teachers/parents) as their Senior Counselors Kindergarten – 3rd grade have Senior Counselors who are in college or older, Junior Counselors who are in grades 11 or 12, and CITs who are in grade 10 Tzahov (Grades 4-6) have mainly Senior Counselors, with a few older Junior counselors Road Rulz (Grades 7-9) counselors are all adults

What is the start and end time of camp?

Campers arrive at camp between 8:45am and 9am and leave around 4pm.

We also offer early care starting at 7:30am and late stay available until 6pm.

How do the children get to and from camp?

Busing is included if your child is attending the 9:00 am – 4:00 pm camp program. If your child is a half day camper and leaves camp at 12:30 pm, they can ride the bus to camp in the morning. If you are utilizing early or late care you must provide the transportation.

Does my child have to ride the bus both ways to and from camp?

If the bus schedule does not work with your schedule you are more than welcome to drive your child/children to camp, pick them up in the afternoon, or any combination.

Once my child arrives at camp, what can they expect?

When the campers get dropped off, either by their parents or a bus, they are walked by a staff member up to their group table where their counselors are waiting for them to start their fun-filled day!

Does my family have to be Jewish to attend Camp Ruach?

No! We are a Jewish camp that has cultural programs integrated in our schedule. We are open to everyone. We are proud to say both campers and staff represent people from all different backgrounds. All are welcome and feel comfortable here. continued on next page...

FAQs

Does my child need to bring a lunch to camp?

Yes…or no! Your child is welcome to bring a lunch with them, which will be refrigerated. They may also purchase lunch at camp. We offer items such as hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza, bagels and pasta on a rotating basis. A water bottle and choice of fruit or chips is also provided. A menu will be downloadable from our website where you can sign up for lunch before camp starts.

We are a kosher sensitive facility. Please do not mix meat and dairy in your lunch and no shellfish or pork are allowed on our site.

We also provide a snack in the morning (usually crackers, pretzels, etc.) and ice pops in the afternoon…except for Friday when we serve Rita’s Ices at the end of the day! There are many special snacks throughout the summer which correlate with the theme of the week.

My child has allergies. How is this handled?

We are allergy aware. There is a nurse full time onsite. We have nut-free tables for those with nut allergies. Currently, we have campers who are nut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free and soy-free. My child has special needs. Do you offer a special program?

Yes! We will work with your special needs child to give him or her the best summer camp experience possible. We provide shadows through Americorp.

Do I send my child to camp if it’s raining out?

Of course!!! There are going to be rainy days, and campers are still going to have lots of fun! We utilize our indoor facility and some groups (grades 1 and older) may go on trips to movies or bowling for half the day.

And really hot days?

We bring kids inside more often, give extra swims and set up sprinklers throughout the campsite.

Finally…will my kids enjoy their summer Camp Ruach?

Camp Terms of Enrollment – Extremely Important!

ALL BUS STOPS AND ROUTES ARE FINALIZED BY MAY 1.

ALL REGISTRATIONS AFTER MAY 1 WILL BE ASSIGNED A PRE-EXISTING STOP. 1. All Discounts will revert back to regular rate if not paid in full by May 2, 2012.

2. All payments are due in full per the payment schedule; all late payments are subject to a late charge of $100. Campers must be paid in full before camp begins in order to attend. There is a $30 charge for all returned checks.

3. In accepting a child’s enrollment, the camp reserves a place for him/her. If for any reason you cancel an enrollment, the following rules will apply: (this includes changes in the number of weeks you are enrolled) • Cancellations prior to February 1, 2012, you will be refunded all camp fees paid, less $150.00 per child.

• Cancellations, February 1, - March 31, 2012 you will be refunded all camp fees paid, less $250.00 per child.

• There will be no refunds for any cancellation after April 1, 2012, no exceptions! This includes enrollment changes that result in a decrease in the number of weeks you will be attending.

4. There are no refunds or credits due to illness, absence, epidemic, suspension or emergency closing.

5. First change to your camper’s schedule is free. Any changes to their schedule after that are subject to a $50 administration fee per change.

6. All sessions require a $500.00 deposit per child, due at the time of registration.

7. Members pay the member rate. Non-members pay the non-member fee for their first child and get the member rate for each additional child. Family membership required to be eligible for member rates.

8. Your JCC Membership must remain current throughout the 2012 camp season or you will be billed for camp at the NM rate.

9. Registrations as of May 1, 2012 (all camp fees) must be paid in full at time of registration.

10. Camp reserves the right to terminate this agreement at any time and for any reason with no penalty.

11. Camp administration reserves the right to place your camper in a group they deem appropriate, as well as ask that you withdraw any camper whom we deem unable to maintain a safe relationship within the confines of the camp.

12. Full Day Camp – the campers arrive between 8:45am-9am. The campers depart camp between 3:50pm-4pm. Half-Day ends at 12:30 PM. 13. Early drop off and late stay are offered at supplementary fees and parents will be billed an additional $10/every 15 minutes, beginning 5 minutes after the late stay pickup time. After 2 times picking up late, the program will no longer be available to you.

14. Minimum enrollment required for all groups. Additional week extensions are based on availability and are billed at the rate at the time of the extension.

15. Campers must be registered for a minimum of 4 weeks.

16. The JCC’s insurance policy is secondary to your family insurance policy.

17. Campers will not be admitted to camp unless all forms have been completely and properly filled out before the start of camp.

18. Sibling discount - $75 for 4-6 week campers and $100 for 7 & 8 week campers. Sibling discount will be deducted from the balance due.

19. Financial adjustments will be made for children signed up in both early and late stay for transportation costs. ($75 for 4-6 week campers, $100 for 7 & 8 week campers).

20. Please note that should transportation prices rise significantly, we reserve the right with notification, to add a transportation surcharge to alleviate such charges.

21. Camp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or dismiss any camper if his or her conduct is detrimental to the well being of the camp or of any other camper(s) and no refunds or credits will be issued.

22. Camp may photograph and video my child and use these images for brochures, websites, promotional, and/or advertising purposes (no names will be used).

23. Camper’s family contact information on group lists and other similar formats may be shared with other camp families solely for the personal use of such families.

24. My Tzahov, Road Rulz and/or LIT camper has my permission to see PG13 movies.

25. All dates are subject to change when school closings are finalized.

I have read and agreed to the rules of enrollment. I give permission for my child/ren to participate in all camp activities and trips, including rainy and hot day trips for grades 1-9, and release Camp Ruach, the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, and any destination that we go on from any and all liabilities. In the event that you cannot be contacted in a medical emergency, you hereby grant your permission to the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC to take your child/ren to the nearest medical facility to provide a physician and to give emergency treatment to your child/ren.
