and the outdoor pool has been sandblasted and is in the process of being resurfaced. As you can well imagine, plenty of work is being done inside as well. Classrooms and offices are being installed as are the plumbing, electricity, and the air-conditioning/heating ductwork. "It's amazing to see a building of this scale being transformed from engineering drawings and scale models to reality," says Addie Kluger, a member of the Site Committee. "It's almost like seeing a sculpture take place right before your eyes."

If you'd like to take a personal tour of the building, please contact Steve Rosenberg or Doron Steger and they'll be happy to arrange it. You may contact either one at the Federation office at 908-725-6994.

When was the last time you visited the site of the JCC? If it's been a while, you're in for a pleasant treat on your next trip. The walls are up, the roof has been tiled, the indoor pool is in place as is its glass enclosure. Even some of the subtleties are being noticed as the exterior takes on decorative enhancements that will lend a sense of elegance to what is a very practical structure. Should you have a chance to visit

the JCC site, you'll notice that the parking lot layout has been arranged with edging stones, and one gets the sense that progress is being made with each passing day. The Site Committee has indicated that construction is on schedule, and we can lookforward to a timely opening of this facility. If you're concerned about outdoor activities, you'll be pleased to note that the tennis and basketball courts are taking shape,

Moving to Bridgewater in 1999, the only people in the community we knew were Geoff and Adena Feinstein. Within a very short period of time which included the wonderful introduction to the world of our son Sam, we had a growing circle of friends. Looking back at photos of Sam’s one-year birthday party-which was held in what is now the room where he and many others lift weights - it is remarkable to see how much our social circle had expanded.

Rolling the clock forward over the last twenty-five years, the JCC became an increasingly important part of my life both socially and in many ways spiritually. From Pirkei lessons Sam learned, to Camp Ruach adventures to hours in the gym playing basketball together. Sam being exposed to Tae Kwon Do which became a 4-year adventure culminating in earning a black belt. And joining in with many of his childhood friends on the soccer fields, which carried on all the way through to his senior year in high school.

Upon joining the board in 2011 I had the opportunity to begin to help steer the direction of this wonderful organization. The reservoir of Tzedakah-the -Righteousness, Justice and Fairness-

and upon which the board and staff operated, was the platform for continuing to positively impact Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties.

In those early days, assuming the role of President never occurred to me. And now three years after taking over from my dear friend Geoff, what we have achieved and the opportunities in front of us are more vivid than ever. The JCC campus - from the fields of Camp to the outdoor and indoor courts

to the pool and splash pad, to the new locker rooms in-process poolside changing and bathrooms - it’s nothing short of beautiful. The aesthetic beauty is surpassed only by the beauty of the work that gets done everyday. The Blaustein Early Childhood Center provides the perfect environment for our youngest to set out on a principled, well-nourished path. Our Fitness programs - along with our Swim, Sports and Personal Training activities - contribute to the mental and physical well-being of people of all ages. Our Social events provide ways to connect, engage and contribute to others within the Community. The list of ways in which we contribute to the Community goes on and on.

My deepest respect and appreciation for the work of our unparalleled and tirelessly dedicated staff is what most stands out. The good we are able to do, the impact we are able to make is solely a function of the tremendous work Laura and the entire team ensure gets done every single day. It has been my honor and privilege to be a member of our board who gets to support your work and represent this organization. I look forward to continuing as a member of this board in years to come. Josh Leibner

As we reflect on the events and challenges of the past year and look toward the future, we are deeply grateful for the dedication and commitment of our board and staff. Your tireless efforts and unwavering support have been fundamental to our mission and vision, guiding us through both challenges and triumphs.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Josh Leibner, who served as President of our Board for the past three years. Josh’s exemplary leadership, dedication, and vision have made a lasting impact on our community. His efforts to promote unity and strengthen our ties with the community will be remembered and valued by all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.

As the new President and the current CEO, we are humbled to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before us. The legacy of leadership and service that Josh and others have cultivated over the years is a testament to their commitment to our community.

In the coming years, we pledge to work tirelessly alongside each and every one of you to advance our

shared mission. Together, we will continue to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued and respected.

In the wake of the events of October 7th and the concerning rise in antisemitism both locally and globally, the community’s dedication to our shared values has been a source of strength for all of us at the JCC. Despite the challenges we have faced, the collective resolve to uphold the principles of unity, tolerance, and inclusivity has inspired everyone to strive for greater heights.

Furthermore, we reaffirm our support for Israel. As a symbol of democracy and resilience in the face of adversity, Israel holds a special place in our hearts, and the JCC community stands in solidarity with the Israeli people.

In the coming year, we are committed to strengthening our relationships with each other, supporting one another through good times and bad, and continuing to serve as a source of inspiration and strength for all who call the JCC home.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the dedication, passion, and unwavering support. Through our collective efforts, we will continue to make a profound and lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

Josh Leibner, Outgoing President, Laura Friedman, CEO, and Josh Wang, Incoming President.

Amidst the excitement of marking our J’s 25th anniversary, one figure stands out: Michael Bloomstein. A familiar face in the halls of the JCC Fitness Center, Michael’s journey intertwines seamlessly with our community’s evolution over the years.

Michael and his family have been active members of the Bridgewater community since 1976, and they have been involved with the JCC for many years. His sons, Dan and Doug, grew up attending preschool and summer camps at the JCC. For Michael and his late wife, Cheryl, the JCC was not just a facility but a second home where they felt they belonged.

In 2005, as Cheryl retired from her career as a social worker, the Bloomstein family officially joined the JCC family. Little did they know it would mark the beginning of a profound chapter in Michael’s life. Following Cheryl’s passing in 2012, Michael found solace and purpose in fitness. The JCC became his refuge, a place where he could not only nurture his physical health but also foster meaningful connections with the community.

Michael's commitment to the JCC goes beyond mere membership; it's a testament to his unwavering support for the mission of the Jewish institution.

bonds forged within our community. However, Michael's story is just one thread in the rich tapestry of programs and initiatives offered by the JCC to promote holistic well-being. The JCC provides a diverse array of wellness programs designed to educate and empower individuals to lead healthier lives, from group fitness classes to personalized training sessions, nutrition workshops, and stress management seminars.

Moreover, the JCC's impact reverberates throughout all stages of life. From youth programs promoting active play and healthy

habits to senior fitness classes fostering vitality and independence, the JCC's offerings cater to the diverse needs of the community.

As we celebrate 25 years of fitness and community wellness, let us not only honor Michael's journey but also recognize the profound impact of the JCC on our collective health and happiness. Together, let us continue to embrace fitness as a catalyst for positive change and empower individuals to thrive at every stage of life. With the JCC's support, we can build a healthier, happier future for generations to come.

Through his active involvement, from serving on the Board of Directors since 2016 to participating in various programs and events, Michael embodies the spirit of dedication and service.

Michael is a fervent advocate for fitness, and his presence in the gym is a testament to his dedication. Whether sweating it out in group fitness classes, or training with friends like Aviv Wagner, Assistant Fitness Director, Michael's commitment to wellness is unwavering. Their shared journey even led them to Israel in 2018, a testament to the

Debby and Peter Hercky have been active members of our JCC community since its inception. They were among the first members who joined the J in anticipation of its grand opening in December 1999. Their involvement in the community reflects their deep commitment to Judaism and Israel, which was instilled in them from a young age. Peter has fond memories of attending the Y in Newark during his childhood, while Debby's family was actively engaged in the JCC in Plainfield.

When the JCC opened its doors, it became a beacon of Jewish culture and identity, a place where Peter, Debby, their children, and others could forge meaningful connections and friendships. Today, Peter and Debby continue to be active members of the JCC community. Debby’s appointment to the JCC Board of Directors is a testament to her ongoing engagement and appreciation of the JCC and its offerings. Similarly, Peter’s pride in the JCC's resilience during the pandemic underscores the strength and generosity of our community. They are proud of how the JCC fosters inclusivity, opens its doors, and serves the entire community, providing a comfortable place for everyone, especially during times of division.

Their connection to Israel extends beyond personal involvement in the JCC. It isn’t just a place on a map - it’s a living, breathing part of their identity.

In the wake of the October 7th attacks in Israel, the JCC's Blaustein Early Childhood Center’s Director, Adena Feinstein, opened our ECC to their grandchildren and other Israeli children, providing a haven during challenging times.

Moreover, Peter and Debby collaborated with their dear friends, Doron and Sherry Steger, in launching “What’s Newish,” a weekly discussion group focused on Jewish and Israeli topics, underscoring their commitment to fostering understanding and engagement. This initiative has grown in popularity, attracting participants locally and internationally.

Standing with Israel isn’t just a cultural or historical imperative, but also a vital necessity for the preservation of the Jewish homeland and identity. By supporting Israel’s right to self-determination and security, the JCC promotes peace and stability in a volatile region while combating antisemitism.

The JCC's role in nurturing our community’s connection to Israel is not just a part of our programming, it's a part of our identity. From educational seminars and cultural events to solidarity commemorations, the JCC ensures that Israel remains vibrant in our collective consciousness. As we celebrate 25 years, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing this bond for generations to come. Through the experiences of individuals like Debby and Peter, we are reminded of our community's enduring strength and resilience, united in our shared values and aspirations.

Some men see things and ask, “why.” Doron Steger saw a need and asked, “why not?” Since Biblical times, Jewish history is replete with visionaries and dreamers. In recent American history, there was Martin Luther King who had a dream of a more tolerant nation, and John F. Kennedy, who spoke of his own vision of the future. In Bridgewater, we have Doron Steger. His dream of a Jewish Community Center which would be the heart of the community and home for Jewish Life is now reality.

Thanks to Doron’s vision and tenacity, the JCC of Bridgewater will open its door and welcome the entire community on Sun., Dec. 5 at 1 PM. Many who have shared in Doron’s dream and hard work will be honored at the dedication. “Doron’s Dream Team” includes numerous members of the many committees whose individual talents, hard work and perseverance have nutured the drea to its fruition.

The entire community is invited to share in the dedication and to recognize and thank all those reponsible for the center’s creation. Local and State dignitaries will mark this occasion at the ribbon cutting. You can tour the 36,000 sf state-of-the-art facility while enjoying Chanukah goodies.

All can feel proud of being part of a community that turned Doron’s dream into a place where “Together, our Flame Burns Bright.”

Meet Maribel! Her journey here began with a simple recommendation from a friend, who assured her it was a fantastic place to work. Little did she know then that this recommendation would lead her to find not just a job but a second home. As a member of the maintenance team, her contributions extend far beyond just ensuring the physical upkeep of our facilities; she embodies the spirit of dedication, reliability, and warmth that defines our community.

From the moment she stepped through our doors, Maribel knew she had found her place. Here, amidst the bustling activity and warm camaraderie, she found a sense of belonging that she had never experienced before. Maribel shared that we’re more than just colleagues; we’re

one big family. The supportive environment has not only made Maribel's work enjoyable, but has also extended to her family, including her kids and grandkids, making it all the more special. Moreover, Maribel's role extends far beyond her official job description. She serves as a mentor to newer staff members, sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with patience and humility. Her willingness to go above and beyond her duties exemplifies her deep investment in the success of our community.

One of Maribel's fondest memories is the time she spent working alongside her son, who worked as one of our lifeguards. Watching him grow and thrive in this community filled her with pride. In addition, watching at the time, her 4 year old grandson flourish at camp his first summer and spending the next 6 years at camp forming friendships that will last a lifetime, have brought her great joy. This personal connection is just one example of the many fond memories Maribel has made at the JCC, making it a place that holds a special place in her heart.

Not only has her family enjoyed the many programs the JCC has to offer, but Maribel herself can often be found in one of our many fitness classes!

Our JCC has been the backdrop for many significant life events in Maribel’s life, from birthdays to showers and everything in between. Each celebration held here holds a special place

in her heart, adding to the rich tapestry of memories she holds dearly.

As Maribel reflects on her 25 years of service, she is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of something truly special. Here, amidst the laughter and love, she has found not just a job but a community that has become an integral part of her life. And as she looks to the future, she knows that no matter where life takes her, our JCC will always be her second home.

Elaine Nestel has a deep connection to the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center. Her dedication and service to the center spans decades, and her journey began long before the current building was constructed. Elaine assumed the responsibility of running the JCC day camp in 1988, even before a physical structure existed. Originally hired to oversee the preschool program, her passion and dedication quickly propelled her to the position of camp director. Elaine's devotion to the camp and its community played a pivotal role in her decision to become a part of the Bridgewater community.

Elaine's family was involved in the JCC from the initial assessment to becoming one of the founding families, underscoring their commitment to the JCC's vision and mission. Watching her children, Samantha and Ethan, grow up within the JCC's vibrant community, participating in various activities and eventually contributing as staff, fills Elaine with immense pride. She is excited to see that she was a part of creating something that not only had a huge impact on the Jewish community, but also on the community as a whole.

For Elaine, the JCC is more than just a fitness center or a recreational space; it's a place of profound personal connection and community transformation. Her volunteerism and involvement in various committees reflect her commitment to nurturing

and enriching the JCC community. Elaine embodies the spirit of giving back, fostering a sense of belonging for all who walk through the JCC's doors.

One of Elaine's most significant contributions is her role in re-launching Girls on the Run, a program that combines her passion for social and emotional learning with her love for physical activity. Her dedication to this initiative underscores her desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young girls within the community, inspiring them to reach their full potential.

Elaine Nestel's story is a testament to the power of community and the transformative potential of dedicated individuals. Through her unwavering commitment and boundless enthusi asm, she has helped shape the JCC into a thriving center of activity, inclusion, and connection for all who walk through its doors. Additionally, Elaine serves as a prime example of the importance of volunteering, inspiring others to get involved not only at the JCC but also at other organizations. The JCC's active encouragement of community involvement through monthly projects such as collecting items for local social service agencies, participating in initiatives supporting communities in Israel, organizing park cleanups, or visiting senior centers, underscores its commitment to fostering a culture of service and making a positive impact beyond its walls, a commitment we can all be proud of.

Betsy Zalaznick's journey with the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center (JCC) is not just a story of personal involvement, it's a testament to her unwavering commitment to inclusion and community service, particularly for individuals with special needs. Born and raised in Perth Amboy, Betsy's upbringing instilled in her a profound appreciation for community engagement, a value she has continued to uphold in her adult life and her connection with the JCC. Her personal journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, is a source of inspiration for all.

Her daughter, Kate, now 34, has special needs, and Betsy's journey to create meaningful opportunities for Kate within the JCC community is inspiring and transformative. Since Kate was two years old, Betsy and her family have worked tirelessly to provide her with tailored programming and support. From hiring individuals passionate about special education to creating a nurturing environment filled with activities that cater to Kate's interests, Betsy's dedication to her daughter's well-being knows no bounds.

The turning point came when Betsy envisioned a program at the JCC that would benefit not only Kate, but also other individuals with special needs. In August of 2015, she reached out to the JCC’s CEO, Laura Friedman, a

pivotal moment that sparked the crea tion of a groundbreaking initiative. Betsy's proposal for a meaningful job/internship program resonated deeply with Laura. Laura’s enthusias tic embrace of the idea marked the beginning of a transformative jour ney, culminating in the birth of JCares. This program, with its potential to change lives and foster inclusivity, is a beacon of hope for the community.

The swift transition from concept to reality was fueled by Betsy's determination and the JCC's dedication to inclusion. What began as a dream quickly evolved into a tangible program, thanks to the tireless efforts of Betsy and the JCC staff. Their shared vision of inclusivity and support laid the foundation for what would become a transformative endeavor.

Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast belief in the power of community, the JCC's Special Needs program took shape. From navigating bureaucratic hurdles to conducting thorough interviews for staff recruitment, every step was a testament to Betsy's resilience and the JCC's unwavering support. J-Cares was born!

J-Cares embodies Betsy's goals for Kate: productive engagement, relationship-building, having fun, and learning new skills. Led by a dedicated Director of Special Needs, Ellie Willoughby, and support personnel, the program empowers individuals like Kate to become meaningful contributors to the com munity.

Looking ahead, the possibilities are endless. From assisting in preschool classes to engaging in recreational activities like swimming and Zumba, J-Cares offers a diverse range of opportunities tailored to each individual's interests and abilities. Betsy's vision for Kate and others with special needs extends

beyond the walls of the JCC, envisioning a future characterized by growth, inclusion, and boundless potential. This vision, a call to action for all, inspires us to strive for a more inclusive and compassionate community.

As Betsy reflects on the journey that led them to this transformative moment, she expresses profound gratitude to the JCC staff and the entire Board for their unwavering support. Together, they have not only enriched Kate’s life but also inspired the entire JCC community with a spirit of inclusivity and com-

Have you heard the latest?

We are up and running a “JCC Without Walls,” a term used to refer to JCC programs at varying facilities, initially geared for youth, an exciting JCC Sunday/Funday program for this winter has been developed and will span six weeks from February 26 through April 2. The program will be available for children in grades 3 to 9. Included in the activities will be indoor basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, aerobics, karate, and arts & crafts. Support the program by registering your children and volunteering your time. See the registration form on page 3. Registration closed on February 10, so don’t wait.

In order to ensure an orderly and successful program, the federation has hired Ellen Pollack-Williams to supervise and coordinate the project.

Together with the many volunteers who have already signed up, I’m confident that we will have a very successful and expanding program that will eventually move into our J facility.

Lois Kemp, Federation Secretary invites you to join her at the Super Sunday 4F Ranch. For information call 725-6994.

Celebrating 25 Years at the J!

Melea Rubinstein Henig’s interest with Jewish and Israeli organizations began after studying abroad in Tel Aviv during college. After a life changing experience living in Israel and graduating from The University of Vermont, she began her career at Tel Aviv University’s International School office in New York. During her 15 years at TAU, Melea served in a variety of roles in recruitment, admissions, institutional partnerships, and financial operations. As Director of North America, she led efforts to further strengthen internationalization on TAU’s campus, developed and fostered relationships with institutions of higher education, and oversaw a staff of professionals supporting US and Canadian students studying abroad in Israel. Melea Rubinstein Henig lives in Bernardsville, NJ with her husband, Jamie, and two children, Natalie and Oliver. She has been a member of the JCC since 2017 and both children have attended the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and enjoy summers at Camp Ruach. In her free time, Melea enjoys swimming, skiing, cooking, and outdoor activities with her family.
