ANNUAL REPORT 2024
As I come to the close of my first year serving as President of the Board, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on what this year has meant, not only to me personally, but to our JCC family as a whole. Taking on this role was a bit intimidating at first, and I’ll admit, it felt like stepping into some pretty big shoes. But what I quickly learned is what every past president before me must have realized: serving this incredible community is not only doable with the team we have — it’s an absolute privilege.
What a remarkable year it has been! 2024 marked the 25th anniversary of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC, a milestone that allowed us to celebrate not just one year’s achievements, but two and a half decades of growth, impact, and community building. It was a moment to honor where we came from, recognize how far we've come, and dream even bigger about where we're headed.
Over this year, I have been consistently amazed by the work across every department. Our Early Childhood Center continues to nurture and inspire the youngest members of our community. Camp Ruach delivered another unforgettable summer full of laughter, learning, and memories that will last a lifetime. Our J-CARES intern program helped young adults with special needs build essential life skills, confidence, and independence- a shining example of what inclusion truly looks like. Our fitness and aquatics programs, including our year-round swim team, didn't just help people get healthier - they helped them connect, grow, and become the best versions of themselves. Our Rising Tide Special Olympics swim team also showed the incredible spirit and strength of our community. We have continued to create innovative programs for teens, adults, and seniors, helping people feel a sense of belonging at every stage of life. And just as importantly, we’ve made beautiful upgrades to our building - from the newly renovated bathrooms to improvements at camp and throughout the facility, ensuring that our J keeps up with the times, both in the programs we offer and the welcoming, modern spaces we provide.
Beyond our walls, the JCC’s commitment to Israel and the global Jewish community stood firmly. We stood proudly with Israel through challenging times, bringing over 400 people together for a powerful gathering on the one-year anniversary of October 7. Throughout the year, we hosted numerous programs centered on Israel, including welcoming guests from the Gaza Envelope kibbutzim to share their stories firsthand with our community. One of the most moving moments was hosting the Shufuni band - a group of young musicians from Otef Aza, all survivors and witnesses of the October 7 massacre. Through their music and personal stories, they brought our community to tears and reminded us of the resilience and spirit of Israel’s southern communities. We also proudly recognized Israel’s national days, standing together in both celebration and remembrance. And most recently, we stepped up to help sponsor a weekend retreat for women impacted by the war in Ukraine — living proof that when there’s a need, our JCC answers the call.
Looking back, it’s clear that the JCC has never been just a building - it’s a beating heart in our community. It’s a place where Jewish values are lived every day: welcoming the stranger, lifting up those in need, educating the next generation, standing with Israel, and making a difference far beyond our backyard. Being President during this anniversary year has shown me the extraordinary responsibility - and extraordinary pride - that comes with helping lead such a vital institution. It’s not always easy work, but when you see the impact, when you feel the community come alive within these walls and beyond them, you understand why the generations before us built this JCC - and why it’s our job to protect and grow it for generations to come.
To our incredible staff, thank you for making the impossible look easy. Your dedication, creativity, and heart are why our JCC is what it is today.
To my fellow board members - thank you for your partnership, leadership, and belief in what we are building together. And to every member of our JCC community, thank you for making this place feel like home. Here's to everything we’ve accomplished over the past 25 years - and to everything still ahead.
With pride and gratitude,
When I think about everything our community has shared, built, and overcome together, I’m reminded what a true privilege it is to be part of this place.
Looking back - not just at 2024, but at everything we've built and become over the years - I am filled with gratitude. Whether it was seeing our JCares interns cheering each other on at their activities, watching a room full of preschoolers dance their hearts out on Shabbat, or simply catching a quiet moment of connection between two members sharing their stories, our JCC was there. We were there because of the partnership between our board, our staff, and most importantly, you, the people who believe in the power of community.
There’s a quote from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) that has stayed with me: "It is not your duty to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Every day at the J, we live this idea. We know that the work of building community, of standing up for what matters, of being there for one another, is never truly finishedbut we show up, together, with heart and with hope.
Now more than ever, we feel the urgency and importance of that calling. As we witnessed the pain and suffering in Israel, with so many families torn apart, hostages still in captivity, and communities still rebuilding, we knew we had a role to play here at home. We stood proudly with Israel, educated, gathered, mourned, and supported however we could. And we will continue to do so.
In 2024, we opened our doors wider than ever. We welcomed families searching for connection, children discovering their passions, and individuals seeking strength, support, and joy. We stood proudly by our values, celebrated milestones, mourned losses together, and responded when the world around us called for action and compassion.
I am endlessly proud of how we continue to grow - not just in numbers, but in spirit. Our JCC doesn’t just serve the community - we are the community. We are a place where everyone feels welcome, included, and valuedwhere each person belongs. Being inclusive isn't something we say; it’s something we live every day. And that's because of the people who give their time, talent, and heart: our incredible staff, our visionary board, and all of you who trust us to be part of your lives.
I am especially grateful to Josh Wang, our Board President, for his leadership, passion, and partnership. Working alongside Josh and our entire board has been a true gift, and I look forward to another year of building and dreaming together.
I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love what I do because every day brings new stories, challenges, laughter, and hope. Every hug, smile, and moment of someone feeling seen and celebrated reminds me why I am here. This isn’t just a job - it’s a calling, and it’s a family. As we reflect on all that brought us here, and look toward today and tomorrow, I invite you to take pride in what we’ve built - and to dream with us about what’s still to come.
Thank you for letting us be part of your lives, and thank you for being part of ours. With deep appreciation,
Laura Friedman

It’s almost impossible to talk about the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC without talking about Debbie Golden. She was one of the first to walk through our doors when we opened, and from that very first day, she has been part of the heart and soul of this place.
Debbie didn’t just help create programs and events — she helped create our community. There is a piece of Debbie in almost every department, every celebration, every tradition we now hold dear. Whether it was bringing creativity to a program, ensuring every event had that extra special touch, or making sure no birthday, no simcha, no milestone ever went unnoticed, Debbie’s fingerprints are everywhere. And they always will be.
What made Debbie truly extraordinary wasn’t just how hard she worked- and she worked incredibly hardbut how deeply she cared. About the JCC. About our mission. About our members. About every single person she encountered.
Debbie never did anything halfway. She gave her whole heart- in everything she touched, and in every connection she made. Even the smallest gestures carried enormous meaning with her. It was never about how much she had to offer- it was about the way she made people feel welcomed, included, and cared for, no matter what.
That was Debbie: thoughtful, generous, and always putting others first in ways that left a lasting impact. That was Debbie: generous, thoughtful, and always thinking about others in the quietest, most meaningful ways.
Over the past 25+ years, Debbie became the person everyone loved and trusted- not because she demanded it, but because she earned it. Through her loyalty. Through her kindness. Through the way she showed up for everyone, day after day, with a smile, a red pen, and a readiness to make things better. She celebrated with us, she problem-solved with us, and she lifted us up when things were hard. She took pride in seeing others succeed, and made sure that the little things- the things that really matter- were never forgotten. Her attention to detail wasn’t just about perfectionism; it was about caring enough to make things truly special.
Debbie also brought an incredible sense of humor to everything she did. She could laugh at herself, at the chaos around her, and find joy even in the most stressful moments. That humor, that lightness, made her not just a great colleague but a great friend.
Beyond her professional world, Debbie’s greatest joy is her family- her husband Paul, her daughter Stephanie, her son Brian, her son-in-law Stephen, and her two beloved grandchildren, Hannah and Jacob. Anyone who knows Debbie knows how fiercely and lovingly she holds them close.
As Debbie steps into retirement—a new chapter she has more than earned- we want her to know that she will always be part of this JCC family. She didn't just work here. She helped build something lasting, something filled with heart, something that will continue to grow because of the foundation she helped lay.
Debbie, your love, your loyalty, your laughter, and your beautiful spirit have made us better. We are forever gratefulfor all you have given us. You will always be a part of this J, and you will always be loved beyond words.
Sandy Krawitz has been a driving force behind the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center’s commitment to Holocaust remembrance and education. As a founding member of the committee that established the JCC Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, Sandy played a key role in shaping its vision from day one. She meticulously researched and gathered the historical content for the Center’s kiosks, ensuring that the facts, context, and lessons of the Holocaust would be accessible to all who visited. Her dedication to preserving history ensures that the atrocities of the past are neither forgotten nor repeated.
The Center holds even deeper meaning, as it was named in honor of Sandy’s in-laws, Helen and Sol Krawitz, both Holocaust survivors. Sol, born in Siemiatycze, Poland, survived the ghetto and fought as a partisan. Helen, originally from Drohiczyn, Poland, survived by fleeing to Russia. Their extraordinary resilience and love for the Jewish people inspired the entire Krawitz family to come together and support the creation of the Center, ensuring that future generations would have a place to learn, reflect, and remember.
Sandy’s connection to the JCC and the larger Jewish community runs deep. She has been part of our JCC family for many years, attending many programs and proudly watching several of her grandchildren grow up at Camp Ruach - one of whom still works here today, helping to create the same kind of meaningful experiences for others. Sandy’s involvement stretches across the community as well, serving on the Jewish Federation board and as an active member of Temple Sholom. Through every role she holds, Sandy shows what it means to invest in the future of the Jewish people — supporting, strengthening, and building community with heart and purpose.
Recognizing a pressing need in Somerset County, Sandy introduced March of the Living to our community. This transformative educational journey takes teens to Poland and Israel, allowing them to witness the remnants of the Holocaust and celebrate the resilience of the Jewish people. Sandy’s passion for this program is evident in every facet—from recruiting participants and engaging with their families to establishing a scholarship fund that ensures financial constraints do not hinder participation. Her dedication ensures that our youth not only learn about history but also carry its lessons forward, becoming ambassadors of remembrance and hope.
Today, nearly a decade after the Holocaust Center opened, Sandy’s commitment remains as strong as it was on day one. She continues to be an integral part of the committee, keeping the work organized and moving forward and inspiring those around her with her passion, leadership, and brilliance. Her tireless dedication ensures that the lessons of the Holocaust are not simply preserved but actively passed down to the next generation.
As Elie Wiesel once said, "For the dead and the living, we must bear witness." Sandy embodies this imperative, ensuring that the memories of the past inform and inspire our future.
We are deeply grateful to Sandy for everything she has built, nurtured, and continues to inspire within our community.
Partnerships like the one we have built with Bridgewater Commons don’t happen overnight - they are nurtured through shared values, trust, and a true commitment to the community.
From the beginning, Tom Kovacic, our incredible partner and friend, has been a champion for collaboration, creativity, and community connection.
Our relationship began when Bridgewater Commons created the Community Hub - a space they generously offered to organizations across the area, recognizing the important role they could play as a joining force for the community. We were proud to bring Jewish programming into the heart of the mall, using the Hub to share the beauty and meaning of Jewish traditions through exhibits, holiday celebrations, and educational initiatives. In a world where antisemitism is sadly on the rise, having a platform to proudly and openly share our heritage has never been more important - and Tom and the Bridgewater Commons team understood that from the very start.
As the relationship grew, so did the respect and friendship between Tom and Debbie Golden, our JCC’s longtime Chief Development Officer, whom we are also honoring tonight. Together, they worked to build a true partnership - one rooted not only in logistics but also in shared values, trust, and a genuine respect for each other’s commitment to the community. Their connection is a reminder that strong partnerships are built on both professionalism and heart.
With Bridgewater Township joining the collaboration, our vision expanded even further. Together, we launched two major annual events — the Bridgewater Spring Carnival and Bridgewater Family Fun Dayheld outdoors at Bridgewater Commons and drawing thousands of families each year. These events have become days of fun, connection, and celebration for the entire community, welcoming people from all backgrounds.
Today, our partnership continues to thrive and evolve. One of the most exciting developments has been the addition of a major digital screen at Bridgewater Commons, where we proudly share upcoming JCC programs and events, reaching even more people with messages of inclusion, celebration, and community life.
Tom Kovacic understands better than most the importance of community and partnership. He is a good person at his core — someone who values relationships, believes in the power of bringing people together, and leads with kindness and respect. We are proud to honor Tom and Bridgewater Commons for helping us dream bigger, reach further, and build a more connected community in Somerset County.
