Dear Members and Friends, As you go through the JCC’s Winter Program Guide, we hope you will notice the scores of programs, classes and activities we provide – as well as the many special events we sponsor. The winter is always an exciting time at the J, and this year is no exception.

The Holiday season is a time to count our blessings and give thanks—for the love of family and friends, for the warmth and security of home, for the hearty meals we share. But as we express our gratitude, it’s important we remember that we do not all experience these same comforts. Within our community, there are families facing challenges—some temporary, and some long-term. It is for these families that we practice the Jewish value of Tzedakah, acts of charity. We give thanks, and then we give back. As we end 2018 and you begin to plan your year-end contributions to one or more charitable organizations, please consider including the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center in your plans. Your support makes a real difference for hundreds of people. Our JCC annual campaign, makes membership financially possible for families each year, supports children in our Blaustein Early Childhood Center and sends children to our camps.

Speaking of camps, Early Bird Registration for JCC Day Camps will end in just a few short days. We’re hard at work finalizing details for our amazing summer camp experiences. Our camp team is busy working on a range of exciting new options for a fun-filled summer for campers of all ages.

The JCC also has a variety of cultural programs to satisfy everyone, and we are starting off the New Year with an incredible program on Sunday, January 13, featuring Dr. Ruth. Her life has been anything but boring—from her escape from the Nazis at age ten aboard a Kindertransport, to her training as a sniper with the Haganah in Israel, and her immigration to the United States. She started as a maid and became a college professor, and eventually a radio and television star. Please join us as we welcome Dr. Ruth to our community.

Passover is one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays and commemorates the biblical story of Exodus, when Hebrew slaves were released from bondage in Egypt. Called “Pesach” (pay-sak) in Hebrew, Passover is a celebration of freedom.

Tour our facilities, meet with members of the Camp Leadership team, and receive special camp savings upon registration. In celebration of Purim, the Jewish Holiday which commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia, we will have a Hamentaschen making station for all to enjoy. Fill this special 3-sided triangular cookie with jelly or chocolate filling and take home with you to bake.

Join us for our second Family Community Service Day, a fun and meaningful day for all. Spend a few hours in the afternoon as a DAY family giving back and engaging in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Volunteer sites, activities and projects will be announced ahead of event for online registration, and may include: Senior-friendly visiting, gardening & grounds maintenance, brown bag lunch-making and more. If you are unable to join us, consider donating needed supplies for the volunteer projects. Fee dependent upon activity project.

Peaceful Parenting 101 will give you the guidance, encouragement, and tools you need to decrease the drama, power struggles, and fighting and restore the joy in parenting so you can be the parent you want to be.

Wednesday, February 20: Rethinking Discipline The actual definition of discipline is “to guide,” but in our society discipline has become synonymous with punishment. In this workshop, we will talk about why children misbehave and what the research shows about various forms of punishment.

More importantly, we will discuss what DOES work to increase your child’s cooperation and compliance and decrease unwanted behaviors.

Mimuna is a tradition practiced by Moroccan and Turkish Sephardic Jews worldwide at sundown on the 8th night of Passover. It is a celebration of freedom, community values, togetherness, friendship, and hospitality.

As any parent of more than one child knows, watching your children interact with each other can be both heartwarming and rewarding and exasperating and frustrating….often all in the same 10-minute span!

In this workshop, we will talk about what causes sibling rivalry, ways to reduce the competition and fighting, and how you can help your children create a close and harmonious bond for life. We will talk specifically about how to respond (what to actually say and do) in the moment when your children are fighting, yelling or hitting each other.

About The Blaustein Early Childhood Center We offer half day, full day, and extended day care options for children six weeks through kindergarten. We are open year round from 7am-6pm with flexible schedule combinations to meet the needs of all families. Specials such as swim lessons, music, yoga, and art are all included in half day tuition. After school fee based enrichments include dance school, basketball, karate, swim, art, and tumbling.

We believe communication is a key element with our parents and families. We use an app called Tadpoles as a communication tool for teachers and parents. Each classroom is equipped with an ipad so that teachers can take photos and fill out daily updates for each child.

Family involvement is also one of the core values in our school. Parents are welcome in the classrooms to read a story, share an activity, or participate in their child’s daily routine. In addition to the classroom, we offer multiple family programs and activities in the evenings and weekends throughout the year.

Our Philosophy The mission of the ECC is to create a safe and loving environment that allows all students — whatever their perceived strengths and weaknesses, whatever their personal likes and dislikes — to explore the world around them, and to become the best versions of themselves.

As they work to navigate what it means to be a part of a classroom and a broader school community, we want them to try new things; to experiment; to succeed; and, even to fail (and learn how to pick themselves back up). We want them to learn to respect each other, to be empathetic and to value each other’s unique attributes and contributions.

Our thoughtfully prepared learning environments and teacher involvement reflect the children’s interests and promote the development of social, emotional, and physical skills. A love of learning flourishes in a welcoming and inviting setting that is safe, nurturing, and stimulating.

Our bright, modern facility is located within the JCC in a separate and secure Early Childhood Wing. We are licensed by the State of NJ and have a high staff-to-child ratio in each classroom. As a part of the JCC, you and your family become a part of our welcoming and caring community. Our Curriculum We utilize Creative Curriculum to guide our explorations in the classroom. Using developmentally appropriate and research based curriculum is recommended by the NJ Department of Education and is aligned with the NJ Teaching and Learning Standards. Curriculum provides the framework around which teachers organize the learning environment, experiences, and interactions.

Creative Curriculum highlights the important balance between applying a general knowledge of child development with the particular knowledge a teacher gains by forming a relationship with each child and family. In addition, as a part of our commitment to quality childcare, we are enrolled in Grow NJ Kids. As a Grow NJ Kids participant, we receive resources to help our program continue to grow - including coaching, training, and professional development.

Our classrooms are rich with language and print, science and art, blocks, and dramatic play, among other areas. The environment, in addition to our amazing staff, promotes each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth. Our school celebrates all of the Jewish holidays and traditions throughout the year. In addition, we view the child’s world and our school through seven Jewish Lenses that speak to a way of seeing, thinking and acting; Journey, Divine Image, Covenant, Holiness, Awakening, Interpretation, and Repair of the World. These guides allow us to consider topics that can be adapted and are relevant for children of all ages in our ECC: reflection, belonging, dignity, potential, intentionality, amazement, gratitude, inquiry, dialogue, and responsibility.

About Our Staff Our staff consists of highly trained, certified, experienced and professional lifeguards, American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, coaches and directors. Our staff takes pride in the programs, quality and cleanliness of our fantastic facility. No matter which program you or your child is involved in, you can be assured that you are receiving excellent and appropriate instruction and supervision. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.

About Our Pools Indoor Pool

The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitivestyle pool. This pool is open year round to all holding a JCC membership. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees. Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.

Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool.

This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep.

The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.

Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years

Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

Ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and belly. At this late stage, ovarian cancer is more difficult to treat and can be fatal. Ovarian cancer often has no symptoms in the early stages. Later stages are associated with symptoms, but they can be non-specific, such as loss of appetite and weight loss. Surgery and chemotherapy are generally used to treat ovarian cancer.

Fitness Challenge with JMUDD Team The JMUDD Team has done outside events since 2014.

They started getting together doing fitness group classes including TRX, Boot Camp and In-Fit. This prepared them for obstacle races and trail runs. They have participated in the Tough Mudder, Spartan Sprint/Super/Beast, City Challenge, Chimney Rock Trail Run, Ragnar Relay and many more. Many of these races take place outside New Jersey. The purpose is to train for these challenging events, participate as a team, and to engage socially. Our team goal is to continue to find challenging events and to recruit new members who are interested in pushing themselves physically while having fun.

Aquatic Fitness Aquatic Group Fitness Classes can be a major “game changer” in the workout arena. Aquatic Fitness can be used by the seniors to give them a safe and warm environment to workout in, as well as, give the athlete added resistance to make the workouts harder. But did you know that Salt based pools have therapeutic effects too?

What Are Salt Water Pools?

Salt water chlorination uses electrolysis in the presence of dissolved salt to produce hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite, which are the sanitizing agents already commonly used in swimming pools. It’s more than just a relaxing place to take a dip. They offer numerous health benefits:

Aqua Tabata: New Aquatics Fitness Class Coming in January!

What is Tabata?

This Class combines shallow and deep water by blending cardio and muscular strength exercises into a series of progressions designed to challenge participants. Class begins with a warm-up, then into a circuit of alternating cardio and strength exercises, finishing with a cool down and stretching. By using noodles, medicine balls, ankle weights and kettlebells, this type of training brings freshness and fun to participants’ aqua-training. Participants need to be comfortable in deep water. Floatation belts provided.

Great for the Skin. Chlorine can leave our skin dry and

itchy after a swim. Alternatively, salt water is actually good for the skin. It can leave your skin feeling smoother and softer, and studies have been done that prove how salt water can help with skin disorders like eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Salt water acts as a natural moisturizer and exfoliator, increasing our skin’s ability to retain moisture.

Anti-Stress Properties. The more stressed we are, the

less our bodies are able to function properly. Salt water helps promote our body’s natural relaxation process leaving us feeling refreshed after each swim.

Alternative to the Gym. Exercise is important to our overall

health. A salt water pool allows us to work out in a more relaxed setting. Swimming is a great workout because you’re resisting the flow of the water with every stroke, making your body work harder. It also helps you concentrate on your breathing, which is something we tend to forget to do when we’re trying to burn calories at the gym.

Oats are a whole-grain food, commonly eaten for breakfast and Oatmeal can be a great addition to a healthy diet. Oats are a good source of carbs and fiber, contain more protein and fat than most grains and are loaded with important vitamins and minerals. So the next time you work out at JFIT and get the “hungries”… try a delicious and nutritious oatmeal snack right at our JFIT Club Energy Bar!

Better on the Joints. Swimming in a salt water pool is better

on the joints and muscles than a traditional chlorinated pool.

Sat water contains bromide, a mineral that helps relieve those everyday aches, pains and soreness we all feel deep within our joints and muscles. In addition, people who are recovering from an injury will find it easier to move within a salt water pool as the bromide helps their muscles and joints recover.

No Side-Effects. Some people are sensitive to chlorine and have trouble breathing when they’re swimming in an overchlorinated pool. Also, chlorine can make your eyes red and irritated from the chemicals within. However, salt water pools won’t leave your eyes red and your lungs irritated

Traditionally, all Fitness Centers start to see an increase in usage at the start of January. The number one goal of somany people is to get healthier, shed a few pounds and eat right.

However, scientific studies show that 80% of these “Wouldbe Fitness Advocates” don’t last more than two weeks into the New Year. So how does one stick to their New Year’s Resolution for more then studies indicate?

The secret is to start slow, do what you LIKE, and become completely immersed in what the fitness facility offers. If you stick to only one type of exercise, the likely hood of becoming board is a certainty.

Three ‘Holiday and Beyond’ JFIT Challenges!

Challenge #1: Walk 10,000 Steps per day.

Why not make a New Years resolution and check out the brand new JFIT facility on your own, or with Family or with a fitness buddy? Need help in creating a workout? Feel free to contact our Senior Fitness Staff (Jess, Joy, Aviv, Elisa) to help you on your New Year’s New Fitness Routine!

This adds up to about five miles each day for most people, and includes about 30 minutes of daily exercise.

Challenge #2: Plank Challenge, 3 Minutes in 3 Months.

Participants must hold the body in plank position, on either knees for those who have chronic back pain, or on toes, for three minutes. The plank is one of the best exercises for core conditioning but it also works your glutes and hamstrings, supports proper posture, and improves balance.

Challenge #3: Burpee and Push up “5-5” Challenge.

Participants must work up to 50 burpees combined with 50 pushups over a 5-month period. The burpee is a full body strength training exercise and the ultimate example of functional fitness. With every rep, you’ll work your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings, and abs.

The push-up Increases Functional Strength via Full Body Activation, while at the same time stretches muscle fibers of the whole body. It also enhances your cardiovascular system, promotes great body muscle definition, protects shoulders from injury, improves you posture and prevents lower back injuries.

The JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team is a volunteer organization that introduces individuals with special needs to the wonders of swimming. As part of Special Olympics New Jersey Somerset County Area 10, we compete in three swim meets throughout the season: County, Area, and State. Athletes participating in this program should have a basic knowledge of swimming and be able to comfortably swim one length (25 yards) of freestyle and one length (25 yards) of backstroke. Long Course Season

The JCC Bridgewater Tide is a year-round swim team that competes in state, regional, and national USA Swimming meets. The Tide provides instruction and training for athletes ages 5-18. The Tide program focuses on all facets of the athlete’s development, from technique and conditioning to good sportsmanship, racing mentality, and believing in continuous improvement. Swimmers are placed in practice groups based on ability, age, and commitment level. All swimmers are expected to compete in USA Swimming meets approximately 1 weekend a month.

Long Course season is the spring/summer competitive season of USA Swimming, with all meets taking place in Long Course (50 meter) pools. Participation is encouraged for all current Tide swimmers, and it is mandatory for all National and Senior swimmers. Workouts will be a continuation of fall and winter training. Space is limited and by invitation/tryout only. If you are interested in joining the Tide Long Course team, please contact Coach David White for a tryout: dwhite@ssbjcc.org.

This program is a bridge from our swim lessons program to our Swim Team and is designed to help swimmers develop the skills necessary for a successful future in competitive swimming. The pre-team will focus on the mechanics of the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly) in addition to starts and turns. To participate, swimmers should already have basic knowledge of all four strokes and be legal in at least two. This group will meet for 45 minutes, twice a week. Swimmers who are ready to move to the competitive team will be placed in a practice group if a spot becomes available. Space is extremely limited and will fill on a first come, first served basis.

Bronze, Tidal Waves Groups Work with Bridgewater Tide coaches during the break between Short Course and Summer League seasons to refine your competitive swimming skills. Geared toward swimmers who are legal in all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), this Tide program devotes time to refining each of the four strokes as well as starts and turns. Build upon what you learned over the winter and fine-tune your strokes to stay in shape and get ready for summer swimming.

Historic Harlem, from the 1700s through the 1920’s and Beyond: This tour begins at Sylvan/Jumel Terrace and ends at Harlem Hospital. Join us for a very picturesque stroll through historic Harlem, once a bucolic estate setting for gracious mansions, later a hub for European immigrants, and then the destination of southern Blacks migrating to the North in pursuit of jobs and rights. We will visit settings associated with all phases of Harlem’s history, while concentrating on the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance, that wonderful period of Harlem history when the creativity of Black writers, musicians and performers became a sought after and much admired influence on American and world culture.

After years of motivation, determination, and challenges the State of Israel was declared in public as a Jewish Democratic state and Judaism was made the lead religion in the country. At the same time, Israel recognizes all minorities within the state who are free to express and practice their beliefs and values. Still today, the line between both definitions, Jewish State and Democratic State, remains unclear. When do the Israeli authorities need to translate national papers to Arabic? How can multiple religions share one city in a State where there is an official religion?

This issue engages the Israeli society and inspires many to take part in the social dialogue and conversation, questioning the values that lead and guide Israel on a daily basis. This dichotomy is what links everyone in Israel to the various dilemmas and challenges which arise.

A stirring story of sports, patriotism and personal growth, Heading Home charts the underdog journey of Israel’s national baseball team competing for the first time in the World Baseball Classic. After years of defeat, Tem Israel is finally ranked among the world’s best in 2017, eligible to compete in the prestigious international tournament. Their line-up included several Jewish American Major League players—Ike Davis, Josh Zeid and ex-Braves catcher Ryan Lavarnways—most with a tenuous relationship to Judaism, let alone having ever set foot in Israel.

Their odyssey takes them from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where they are greeted as heroes, to Seoul where they must debunk their has-been, wannabe reputations. With their Mensch on the Bench mascot by their side, the team laughs, cries, and does much soul-searching, discovering the pride of representing Israel on the world stage.

The oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir. Bernstein mines the emotional depths of her childhood and invites us into her family’s private world. A fantastic set of characters populates the Bernsteins’ lives, including the Kennedys, Mike Nichols, John Lennon and so many more.

Bernstein’s beautifully written memoir is a great American story about one of the greatest Americans of the modern age.

Nancy Gorrell and Evelyn Rauch, Light from the Yellow Star: An Introduction to the Holocaust Through Testimony and Art Sunday, March 31 • 1:30 PM Recommended for Grades 7 - 12 and Adults Registration Required for Materials Free to All! Participants in this inter-generational workshop will view Robert Fisch’s artwork from his survivor testimony, Light from the Yellow Star: A Lesson of Love from the Holocaust. After discussing the survivor’s illustrations and story, parents and their teens will develop, together or individually, their own artistic responses inspired by the survivor’s artwork. This workshop will be co-taught by Nancy Gorrell, Holocaust Educator and Evelyn Rauch, artist and designer of the Holocaust Memorial and Education Center. Artwork produced from this workshop will be exhibited at the Holocaust Center’s Open House on April 14 with the permission of the workshop artist participants. No artistic level of expertise required! All materials provided by the Holocaust Center. This workshop is based on the noted lessons of Holocaust educator, Nancy Gorrell.

Family Community Service Day Sunday, April 7 • 12:30 PM Free to All! Join us for our second Family Community Service Day, a fun and meaningful day for all. Spend a few hours in the afternoon as a family giving back and engaging in Tikkun Olam, repairing of the world.

Volunteer sites, activities and projects will be announced ahead of event for online registration, but may include: Senior Friendly Visiting, Gardening & Grounds Maintenance, Brown Bag Lunch making and more.
