Dear JCC Family, We are thrilled to share with you the progress on our new space on the second floor of the back building. 10,000 square feet is being developed so that we can serve you, our members, and our entire community, better. The expansion began in the fall and we expect all of the finishing touches to be completed this Spring.

There will be a beautiful new community room which will be used for many JCC programs and special events. The Community Room (which can be divided in two smaller rooms) space is also available for rentals for private parties, life cycle events as well as business functions. Our J-Crew After School Program will be moving to their new home on the second floor. In addition, there will be new office space for Camp Ruach, JCC Special Services, JCC Youth Services and for the Jewish Federation. There is also space for additional school classrooms and our J-Cares Special Needs Adult Intern Program.

The next phase of our expansion includes the construction of our new JCC Holocaust Memorial and Education Center which will be built off the lobby of the main JCC building.

This project launches this Spring. We are also renovating the fitness area, including the Fitness Center and Fitness Studios. We plan on beginning this work in the fall.

At this time I would personally like to thank Richard Skydell, our JCC President for the past two years -- who along with a committee including President-elect Seth Geldzahler, Barry Ages, JCC Maintenance Director Robert Wojciechowski and architect Chris Albrecht -- guided us through the construction process. We have been able to complete the second floor without any interruption to the day to day activities of the JCC. The various construction companies we contracted with were extremely flexible in their work schedule to accommodate the JCC’s needs and daily operations.

Everyone is invited to see our new second floor on the evening of Tuesday, June 13 when we hold our Annual Meeting and Dedication of the new Community Room.

H O L I D AY H O U R S Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday April 10, 11, 12 Passover The JCC will close early on Monday at 3pm in observance of the first night of Passover.

The JCC will remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for the first two days of Passover.

Passover begins on the 14th of Nisan and commemorates the biblical story of Exodus, when Jews were liberated from slavery in Egypt. Called “Pesach” (pay-sak) in Hebrew, Passover is a celebration of freedom.

Monday, May 29 The JCC will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. The Summer Swim Club will be open to Star and Swim Club Members.

Free to JCC Members, $5 Per Day/Fee for all guests Join Shalom Stacey the last Friday of the month from 10:30-11:15am for a Shabbat Celebration. Bring your child and join in the Shabbat fun with candle lighting, Kiddush, and yummy challah. Listen to a PJ Library story and participate in a craft project. This is a great opportunity to socialize and meet other families in our community.

All children are welcome. The program is great for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.

PJ Library PJ Library is a Jewish Family Engagement program implemented on a local level throughout North America.

PJ Library mails free, high-quality Jewish children’s literacy and music to families across the continent on a monthly basis.

PJ Library is a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, made possible through partnerships with philanthropists and local Jewish organizations. Today, families in hundreds of communities across the United States and Canada are able to explore the timeless core values of Judaism through books and music. Our community program is funded in part through the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties.

Weekly Shabbat Celebration Shabbat in the Main Lobby - 3:30pm on Fridays Join your JCC Family in the main JCC Lobby to welcome Shabbat. Come together for Shabbat prayers, candle lighting, and enjoy challah and grape juice. It’s a great way to wind down from your buy work/ school week. All are welcome!

Come taste this easy granola recipe that is wonderful to eat throughout Passover. Great as a snack, mixed in yogurt or as cereal. Add in extra ingredients that are your favorites. Stop by the front lobby of the JCC and enjoy a sample! Recipe will also be available.

Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot also means “oaths”. G-d swore eternal devotion to us when he gave us the Torah, and we pledged everlasting loyalty to Him.

What do we do on the Holiday of Shauvot?

1. Light candles on the first and second night.

2. Stay up all night learning Torah on the first night.

Shavuot The Holiday of Shavuot begins on the evening of May 30th and lasts for 2 days. On the Hebrew calendar this is the 6th and 7th of Sivan. We commemorate the day G-d gave the Jewish people the Torah at Mt. Sinai The word Shavuot means “weeks”. Shavuot is the completion of the 7 week counting period between

Our Philosophy Our thoughtfully prepared learning environments reflect the children’s interests and challenge mastery of skills.

Our rooms are set up in learning centers that allow selfdirected, small group play. Additionally, teachers plan guided learning experiences that develop skill building and comprehension. A love of learning flourishes in an inviting setting that is safe, nurturing and stimulating.

We have developed reassuring routines that promote the development of social, emotional and physical skills.

Our Curriculum We use Creative Curriculum which is one of the developmentally appropriate and research based curriculums recommended by the New Jersey Department of Education and is aligned with the New Jersey Teaching and Learning Standards.

Our state certified and licensed teachers plan and develop a language rich environment that promotes each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth.

Daily schedules include active and quiet times, gross and fine motor activities. Our children play in our beautiful, fenced outdoor playground, as weather permits. Through project learning, children explore their interests. Children are surrounded by books, literacy and exposure to the alphabet to prepare them for reading proficiency.

Manipulatives and games reinforce number ability and concepts. Fine motor skills are built through hands on activities and writing.

Our school celebrates all of the Jewish holidays and traditions throughout the year and teaches about Israel.

We participate in SHEVA—the JCCs of North America Learning Framework.

About Our Staff Our staff consists of highly trained, certified, experienced and professional lifeguards, American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, coaches and directors. Our staff takes pride in the programs, quality and cleanliness of our fantastic facility. No matter which program you or your child is involved in, you can be assured that you are receiving excellent and appropriate instruction and supervision. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.

Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool.

This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep.

The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.

About Our Pools Indoor Pool

The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool. This pool is open year round to all holding a JCC membership. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees.

Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.

Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control.

The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

Lifeguard Training Full Course The purpose of this course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Please note, this is a blended learning course. This course consists of classroom and online assignments.

Lifeguard Training Review Course This course allows a lifeguard to review written and physical skills for Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with an American Red Cross Instructor prior to taking the written and practical portions of the Lifeguard Training recertification test.

Lifeguard Management Course The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Management course is to provide aquatic managers and lifeguard supervisors with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage lifeguards and promote the safety of patrons and employees of aquatics facilities.

This is an online course only.

CPR/AED For Health Care Providers Challenge This course allows for lifeguards to challenge written and physical skills for CPR/AED for Lifeguards or for health care providers looking for renewal of their certification.

Lifeguard Training Instructor Course The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules.

Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

Water Safety Instruction Blended Learning Course This course will train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-To-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.

Three main things you need to know: 1. Sprint is HIIT program, which pushes participants to their max. Class is 30 minutes of Training in Speed, Power and Strength using a bike.

The J Zone Special Needs Swimming Skills Sundays - 10 Lessons 12:30 - 3:15pm Ages: 3-15 years Fee: $100 TThe JCC Bridgewater Special Needs Swimming Skills Program is for swimmers ages 3-15 with special needs looking to explore the joys of water and learn how to swim.

This program will also prepare swimmers to participate in our JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team program if they choose to do so. All classes are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors who have certification and experience in adaptive aquatics. This program is provided in partnership with Autism Speaks through their Swimming and Water Safety Grant.

Our program consists of (6) 30-minute private one-onone lessons. These lessons are taught on a one-on-one basis meeting for half an hour each week depending on the instructor and participant schedule. Weekly lessons will include instruction on how to float independently and with a device, how to control breathing, kicking, basic paddling, front crawl, back stroke, and jumping/diving into the pool. Participants will also receive special attention and instruction that may help develop competency in the water as well as improve overall coordination, strength, endurance, range of movement, as well as social and attending behaviors. All students will receive individual skill cards to work on skills taught in the program outside of the class.

Please note enrollment in this program requires a doctor’s note stating that your child is able to participate in an aquatics class before entering the water. A JCC Special Needs Participant Care Form will also need to be submitted prior to the start of lessons.

THE J ZONE’s mission is the gift of time. During this time we support children, their families and caregivers to keep them healthy, happy and strong.

Our respite program will provide 2 hours (ages 5-9) and (ages 10-16) of recreational fun to children with Special Needs. This program will offer a well-deserved break to parents and caregivers from the daily challenges of childcare.

Supporting a child with special needs can be tremendously challenging for parents and caregivers. Often parents and caregivers of children with special needs go for long periods of time before they get any free time. At THE J ZONE, we give parents and caregivers the time to take a needed break to have some fun, go out to eat, run errands, have some alone time or just get some needed rest.

The time spent at THE J ZONE, will allow the child, their family and/or caregivers to return home recharged after everyone has had time away from their day to day routine and challenges.

THE J ZONE will offer your child the opportunity for socialization, arts and crafts, variety of games, sensory activities, playing in the gym or pool and much more.

At THE J ZONE, your child can expect to enjoy fun filled activities, form new friendships and have peer interaction in a well supervised and structured environment.

An intake meeting will be scheduled for each child and their family. During the intake process a detailed profile will be created for your child and we will utilize that information to address their needs and care while at THE J ZONE. Special Needs can be challenging, finding a Day Program should not be. J CARES Day Services is designed to provide a creative, fun and exciting day for adults with Special Needs. Our model is designed as an intern program with Mentors, where the intern’s day is created from their individual interests and abilities, as opposed to a traditional Day Program with large groups and staff oversight.

J Cares J CARES is the new Adult Intern Program that provides social and recreational opportunities to adults with Special Needs, Autism and developmental disabilities Monday-Thursday 9:00am-3:00pm.

Our objective is to provide meaningful structured programming that promotes a feeling of independence and value.

The interns will be supported/mentored by trained staff and will participate in an array of social and recreational activities, including but not limited to cooking, swimming, exercising, yoga, arts and crafts, activities of daily living (ADL’s), music therapy, current events, computer skills, games, puzzles and much more.

The interns will also have many opportunities to assist with a variety of the programs within the JCC, such as assisting every Wednesday with cooking, serving and having lunch with the seniors; participating in the weekly process of cooking and serving lunch to the preschoolers that attend the Blaustein Early Childhood Center; helping as teachers’ aides in the Early Childhood Center and assisting in the front office with mailings and other clerical projects.

The J CARES staff members are trained in CPR/First Aid and all required DDD specialized trainings. All of our staff must complete a background check, finger printing and all trainings before they are allowed to work in the program.

The story of Bronislaw, Huberman, the Israel Philharmonic, and the one thousand Jews He Saved from Nazi Horrors. As a teenager, violinist Bronislaw Huberman toured Europe and received invitations to play for Royalty. But as an adult, witnessing the rising threat of Nazism, Huberman conceived of an ingenious crusade that would become his Masters of the Louvre.

Josh Aronson is an Academy Awardnominated documentary and film writer, producer, and director. He has worked with Showtime, PBS, the Discovery Channel, and others and his films have won awards all over the world. He is also a concert pianist who regularly performs chamber music in New York.

The lights go down and the audience holds their Saturday, breath. Mache M. Seibel, MD, The Estrogen Window become his greatest legacy: forming the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, which would become the lauded Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Huberman arranged the safe passage of hundreds of Jewish musicians and their families out of Nazi controlled territories. His tireless campaigning for the project saved nearly 1,000 Jews from the approaching Holocaust. Huberman’s triumph of art over cruelty was heard around the world.

Bernard and Henry Schanzer, twin brothers, were born in 1935 to Bruno and Bella in Liege, Belgium. They survived the Holocaust as young children due to the efforts of their mother, the magnanimity of two Christian women and remarkable good fortune.

When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940, Bruno and Bella fled with Henry, Bernard and their sister Anna to France. In August of 1942, Bruno and several members of his extended family were arrested by the French police and turned over to the Germans. They were deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered. Bella escaped and went underground. Prior to his arrest, Bruno arranged for a non-Jewish friend to take care of the children. However, the friend handed the twins over to the police when hiding Jews became dangerous.

Miraculously, Bernard and Henry were rescued.

Judy Batalion, White Walls A Memoir about Motherhood, Daughterhood and the Mess in Between Tuesday, May 16 • 7:00pm Location: SSBJCC Fee: $5

Judy Batalion grew up in a house filled with piles of junk and layers of dust, suffocated by old magazines, swivel chairs, and VHS tapes obsessively gathered by her hoarder mother. At the first chance, she escaped the clutter to create a new identity - made of order, regimen, and clean white walls until she found herself enmeshed in life’s biggest chaos: motherhood. Confronted with the daunting task of raising a daughter after her own dysfunctional childhood, Judy reflected on her upbringing and the lives of her mother and grandmother, both Holocaust survivors. What she discovered astonished her. Told with heartbreaking honesty and plenty of humor, Judy’s poignant account of stuff and survival explores navigating the messiness of motherhood, how trauma passes through generations, and the indelible marks that others and daughters make on each other’s lives.

Judy Batalion studied at Harvard and worked as a curator and comedian in London before settling in New York. She was a columnist for the New York Times and has appeared in numerous publications and magazines.
