ABOUT ME

I was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida until my family moved to Kansas City, Missouri when I was about 9 years old. Our timeline in KCMO began in a rental home somewhere in the NKC School District, and then we moved into a house in the Park Hill School District. We used to have two cats, an orange tabby cat and a black tuxedo cat. Now, we have two Siberian Huskies that we love very much.

We made a decision as a family that we wanted to build a custom home, and from there we moved into an apartment before designing our final house. I was a middle school student, still deciding what path I wanted my life to take. It wasn’t until about 8th grade that I knew what my final aspirations would be.

Working on the design of our final home, I was asked to help arrange the plans of the new kitchen when I realized how interesting the task was. That is the story of how I decided I was going to be an architect.

Since then, I have had the opportunity to learn about the field of architecture throughout my high school education in a program called Northland CAPS and my internship at CRB. At my internship, I designed a site model for the Hillyard area in St. Joseph, MO with an arrangement plan of new development buildings. Also at CRB, I had the opportunity to visit a construction site in Lenexa, KS where I learned the process of the final walk-through and the punch list.

I recently took a much needed vacation to Chicago in order to begin visiting some famous architecture in other cities. I was able to see the Sears Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home & Studio, The Robie House, and much more. I learned that depending on where the architecture is located, it has several aspects of context that match the building’s features with its surroundings.

SPATIAL JOURNEY & ORTHOGRAPHICS Semester: Spring 2020 Professor: Barry Ballinger

A kit of parts is provided to inspire the designer to organize movement and to frame views. The goal of “spatial journey” is to create a sequence of spaces consisting of an entry, a place to pause, and a destination.

In order to think like a designer, one must recognize how people interact with a space and understand the scale, presence, and perception of human beings. Displaying things to a scale gives us an idea of human dimensions relative to the space and position being inhabited.

Constructing a model in a certain way will force the eye to follow a certain path that will successfully orchestrate movement and framing views.

Given a kit of parts, the problem is NOT trying to fit your wall piece to another wall piece. Instead, it’s the entire enclosure and the spaces 12

between the elements that we are trying to solve.

Spatial Journey creates a setting where visitors experience an inaccessible level upon entry, mainly created for viewing purposes.

The journey takes them up the ramp and stairs, onto a platform as a place to pause.

From there, they can choose their path towards one of two destinations and look out into the surrounding scenery.

The goal of the project is to design a community setting to bring together the residential area of the Nauck neighborhood and the Arlington area of Virginia.

Considering this location is in an unfamiliar region, researching about the climate and history of the area creates a better understanding towards a fundamental design.

My community cafe allows a diverse set of people to enjoy the indoors as well as the natural outdoors through glass walls, balconies, and roof terraces.

Design Development

Early design introducing 50/50 indoor and outdoor seating space with an attempt at creating balanced nature and an architectural language using planes.

Alteration of the architectural language in order to display it more prominently.

Extension of the building and addition of pathways, allowing a more connected and continuous flow of space for finalization.

The community cafe utilizes the empty commercial lot space at 2323 Shirlington Rd, Arlington, VA 22206. Arlington is the 6th largest county in Virginia, containing 63% White, 15% Hispanic, 10% Non-Hispanic, 9% African American, and 3% other.

This region is known to hold the nation’s oldest schoolhouse, Arlington’s Historical Museum, and the nation’s oldest building, the Ball-Sellers House. Arlington was also among the early regions for school desegregation.

The oldest African American neighborhood, or Nauck neighborhood, contains the empty lot on Shirlington Road and is anchored by four churches that hug the predominantly residential area.

COMMUNITY GARDEN CENTER Semester: Spring 2021 Professor: Farhan Karim Skills Applied: Enscape, Sketchup, Lumion, llustrator, AutoCAD

Kaw Point is a park and heritage trail in Kansas City, Kansas. This is the area where the Kansas and Missouri rivers meet. The client feels that an architectural addition is necessary in this area to gather more tourists and people out of town.

The area of Kaw Point has a history of flooding, considering it is located off the river. Research has been done that this particular lot would create difficult situations for new construction, aside from the limited space being presented.

Quindaro Bluffs, a neighborhood slightly NW from Kaw Point is a remarkable location filled with historical subjects, such as the Old Quindaro Museum and the ruins within the forest. It has been decided that this is an exceptional location for new community construction.

FINAL PARTI DIAGRAM The final parti presents pergolas to act as sunshading devices, extra windows where necessary, additional entry/exit points for emergency acess, etc. The skylight above the hallway has been extended to each end to allow more natural light to shine inside and for exterior views from the second floor level. While most of the panels that cover the greenhouse are glass, some of them are metallic panels -- matching the mullions -- in order to create a more shaded room and comfortable temperature inside.

Bubble Diagram

The bubble diagram displays the flow of spaces that different categories of people might take upon their visit to the Community Garden Center.

Donators would potentially check in through the lobby and drop off their items to the Food and Equipment Donation Center, for which they can receive a voucher to use towards special items in the greenhouse or market place.

Volunteers will go directly to their workspace to help with marketing tasks, group exercises, display set-ups, etc. They might visit the training center/classrooms to learn about the garden program and become more involved or be available to assist visitors in the greenhouse.

Last but not least, visitors are the primary importance of this new construction. Aside from spreading the word, guests to the community garden can freely enjoy an exterior community garden selection at any time.
