EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Bridges Supporters and Partners: I feel blessed to be surrounded by a team of extraordinary colleagues, advised by a committed Board of Trustees, and grateful for you, the donors and partners that make Bridges possible. We could not do our work without your belief in us and commitment to our students. It gives me great pride to share this report with you, covering our last fiscal year, July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024. A few highlights: There is a list of student achievements from the year on page 4. Many of the students who graduated in the spring, including the students featured – Ronald, Jayden, and Amara – started high school and/or college at the height of COVID. They persevered and achieved through particularly difficult circumstances. I am grateful that our team and program could support them along the way.

Partners provided so many unique real-world experiences to our students during the year. Akata’s architecture job shadow (page 6) is part of a recent effort to better prepare high school and collegeaged students for their future careers. Montebello Elementary is just one of the Baltimore City Public Schools that hosted volunteers for a field trip about education in Baltimore City (also on page 6).

Juwan Wheatley and David Hooper (page 8) are two extraordinary people I met fifteen years ago.

Juwan and David have both benefited from Bridges and now give back to the program. Their stories, and the possibility of being a catalyst for more stories like theirs, is a driving force behind our efforts to expand Bridges in Baltimore. It’s an honor to give you a window into their Bridges experiences.

I hope you will look over the names of trustees, partners, and donors, starting on page 12. Some are new to Bridges. Some have been supporting for 31 years. All were vital to our efforts in 2023-2024 and Bridges is deeply grateful for the support.

Bridges’ 13-year program provides Baltimore City youth with 1,800+ hours of year-round support to help them achieve long-term educational and professional success.

Bridges’ year-round volunteer program creates a space for independent school students to build relationships with Baltimore City students, learn about issues of access, and be part of building a more equitable society.

A TALE OF TWO STUDENTS: TWO ALUMNI BRING BRIDGES’ DUAL MISSION FULL CIRCLE Juwan Wheatley and Dave Hooper met in the Bridges After-School Program. Fifteen years later, they are both still giving back to Bridges.

Juwan Wheatley joined Bridges the summer after his third grade year at Leith Walk Elementary. That year, as a fourth grader in the Bridges at St. Paul's AfterSchool Program, Juwan met David (Dave) Hooper.

Dave was a sophomore at The St. Paul's Schools, volunteering with Bridges as an after-school tutor.

Juwan recalls his time with Dave Hooper fondly: "I remember he was just a chill guy, very helpful. It was cool getting to know a St. Paul's upperclassman. Sort of like a big brother – I looked up to him in that way."

Dave reflects, "[Juwan] was a quiet kid. A lot more quiet back then. There were plenty of other students I worked with and trying to get them to do homework w

was like pulling teeth. But Juwan was always interested in understanding and studying – he always wanted to learn more."

As a high schooler at St. Paul's, Dave volunteered with Bridges for several seasons, earning a spot in the Bridges 3+ Volunteer Honor Society for his extraordinary commitment to service with the Bridges program. Juwan attended the ceremony and read a letter he’d written thanking Dave for his contributions to Bridges. Dave still has that letter. It reads: "You helped me a lot with my organizational and study skills which assisted me greatly in elementary school...you enhanced the tools that I needed to get enrolled at St. Paul's School. You were an amazing volunteer in my first years of Bridges. I hope that you continue helping out with Bridges and making a difference in people's lives."

It allowed me to grow and express myself outside of school.” In early 2024, Juwan provided one such opportunity to a current Bridges college student, hosting them for a winter job shadow at Expo, paying it forward to the next generation of Bridges students.

Juwan attended St. Paul’s in high school, where he discovered an interest in coding. "I spent my free time reading books [related to software development], practicing, and building stuff," shares Juwan. "From there I was pretty active in the online developer communities." Companies began reaching out to him with offers for internships after seeing his online portfolios. In 2019, Juwan landed a full-time time job as a Software Developer at Expo, Inc., an open-source framework for apps used globally by top companies.

Juwan took advantage of the opportunities Bridges provided for personal growth and exploration, even volunteering in the After-School Program as a St. Paul’s student. He believes that this gave him an early leg up in his career trajectory.

Dave is now the Head Brewer at Diamondback Brewing in Locust Point. Last year, he facilitated a partnership between Diamondback and Bridges to brew a special-edition "Coldstream" Cold IPA, donate a portion of sales to support Bridges programs, and host a taproom event. The event brought together Bridges partners, donors, and alumni, and Dave was excited to see that Juwan had come out to join the festivities, where the two reconnected. "It was awesome to see him again," shares Dave.

Dave believes that his deep appreciation for Baltimore is partially due to the opportunities he had through Bridges to build meaningful connections with students like Juwan. "Bridges goes both ways," explains Dave. "It's not just [independent school students] tutoring kids from Baltimore; it's a learning experience for everyone. You learn that we are all just growing up together in different environments with different pressures… I think Bridges is really valuable to the city. People complain about problems – but if you invest in the city you can solve these problems.
