Santa Monica
In 1914, The Vanderbilt Cup start and finish line was perfectly positioned on Ocean Avenue, just outside the gates of the Miramar Estate. Ralph DePalma went on to win the race at record speed, driving a Mercedes on a track deemed the fastest in the world at the time.
Meanwhile, at the finish line, Keystone Studios took full advantage of this magnificent racing backdrop to film Hot Finish, starring Charlie Chaplin, a film considered ahead of its time in the Silent Era, and a prelude to “talkies” in the not-too-distant future. A century of evolution passed in the blink of an eye, and here we sit once again on the edge of change as we delve deeper into our digital age and the new frontiers presented by an AI-driven interface. I can assure you that every image in this magazine was captured on an actual camera, and all of the writing was created without any assistance by Chat GPT!
As gracious hosts, holding true to our core principles, values and identity will be paramount going forward across all sectors of life in an effort to maintain a sense of humanity in our most hospitable industry. I wonder how much change and evolution our wonderful Miramar, the Grand Dame on the promenade, will see over the course of the next 100 years.
In this issue of the Miramar Magazine we embrace our ties to Hollywood and the thrill of being at the epicenter of all things relevant, new, fast and forward. Miramar has always been ahead of the curve with its pioneering spirit and sense of place and self.
Glamour and Gratitude are the central pillars of this issue.
We take a look at glamour and what it means to be glamourous in our brave new world. No longer aloof or exclusive, we embrace vulnerability, diversity and self-awareness as traits most glamourous. Above all, we say thank you with a grateful heart as we recognize that the start and finish line are one and the same. What truly matters is the value of the experience during our time circling the track.
I hope you enjoy this issue.
Thank you.
Welcome to Miramar!
Over the last century, the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows has been a guiding light and gathering place for the Santa Monica community. Miramar has been a home away from home for guests from around the world.
In this issue of Miramar Magazine, we take a moment to reflect on our star-studded past while embracing the future. This season, we are featuring several exciting launches. Our whimsical take on traditional Afternoon Tea. A sophisticated new snack and dinner menu in the Lobby Lounge. An artful Soko Sushi Bento Box to Go. And the best brunch in town just got even better, with the addition of globally inspired dishes from our extraordinary Executive Chef and culinary team at FIG!
We are honored to work with a very talented team, all of whom are genuinely committed to creating a heartfelt community for their fellow colleagues and guests alike. Miramar is a special place both historically and physically. However, it is the incredible people here that make the difference.
I want to take just a moment to recognize this extraordinary team from a wide range of diverse backgrounds, all bound together by a common mission of "turning moments into memories for all our guests," each and every day. We appreciate you with a tremendous amount of gratitude.
Thank you.
Suite 609, a Miramar Ocean View Suite in the historic Palisades Tower, features powerful ocean views and a light, breezy decor. It is a spacious, comfortable home away from home, and a perfect option for families that want to stretch out. We nicknamed it The Jackie O. Suite because she loved staying here. Can’t you imagine the glamourous Jackie Kennedy Onassis kicking back in Suite 609? Yes, of course you can.
Modern-day glamour is a feeling of strength, confidence, elegance, ease. One thing is certain: you’ll find it at Miramar. The history of Miramar is filled with glamourous cinematic moments starting with Greta Garbo, who happened to check in one day and ended up staying for four years.
Whether teeing up for a script run-through over breakfast, or framing the cadence of your day, nothing embodies glamour more than sharing lighthearted banter in an elevated, residential-style setting that immediately makes you feel at home.
"Glamour never takes a day off."
From Marilyn Monroe to Kate Hudson and beyond, guests have enjoyed a relaxed beach vibe and refined elegance in our tranquil Bi-Level Bungalow suites.
Privacy is everything, and our exclusive Bungalows were built with that in mind. Originally conceived as stylish retreats for Hollywood A-Listers who were fleeing the paparazzi, Miramar has the only private bungalows–with lush green spaces and gardens, some with balconies and soaking tubs–in Santa Monica. Set on five expansive acres, just steps from the Miramar Beach Club.
– Catherine Zeta-Jones
“Being glamourous is about strength and confidence.”
Take a break and share a time out with the family. First stop: head over to the historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree, a gathering place for generations of families and friends, and an anchor for the local community, right in our front drive.
The iconic Fig at Miramar was planted over 100 years ago by Georgina Frances Sullivan Jones, a gifted botanist and social butterfly, who built the original Miramar Mansion with her husband. Rooted in history, the exquisite tree is now designated an official Historic Landmark. It is a prime rendezvous spot for wedding parties, family reunions and community events, a place to gather the clan and head out together for a day of family fun.
Take a walk along the Promenade to Santa Monica Beach. Visit the famous Santa Monica Pier and Park, with the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel. Enjoy shared moments together at our exquisite Miramar pool, and, if you desire a stylish new swimsuit, visit Vilebrequin, the luxurious on-site shop in the lobby.
“The only real elegance is in the mind,” Diana Vreeland famously said. No doubt, that feeling of inner beauty and well-being is what leads to a radiant outer glow.
Nourish your mind, body and spirit with a wellness treatment or yoga class at Exhale Spa. Find your inner footing with a walk through the lush Miramar Gardens. Spend an hour with the celebrity stylists at Em Styles Salon for a fabulously glam blowout.
Whatever it is that makes you feel good–mind, body and spirit–as you re-energize and get ready for a big night out!
– Scarlett Johansson
“If you feel glamourous, you definitely look glamourous.”
Like all of the luxurious Palisades suites, our signature Palisades Suite 610 is a romantic haven. It’s a great place to stir up some fun–as well as a cocktail or two–and the perfect spot to steal precious moments together. Put on some vinyl, kick off your shoes and dance!
We have it on good authority that Clark Gable, a frequent Miramar guest, enjoyed a dry Gin Martini, and was no stranger to mixing his own, in Suite 610, before donning a tux and heading down to dinner. Before you do, perhaps make a stop at Atelier Edward Avedis, the fine jewelry boutique in the lobby, to commission a very special bespoke ring or Oscar-worthy earrings from the sixthgeneration master jeweler, who also offers a selection of fine watches.
“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.”
– Audrey Hepburn
Step
Maybe head in to the famous Bungalow Bar for a nightcap? If you enjoy a laid-back feeling and a chill vibe, you will love this open-air space alongside the ocean. There is no dress code–board shorts or ball gowns, come as you are.
The night is young
“We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle.”
– Marilyn Monroe
When Melanie Griffith was young, she loved to unwind in the pool next to her family’s pet lion. Sean Connery took breaks from filming on the set of Diamonds Are Forever to jump, fully clothed, into the pool. Grace Kelly and Cary Grant filmed a memorable scene from To Catch a Thief in a studio swimming pool.
Steal away together and enjoy light-hearted, late-night moments by the pool. There’s a comfort in being who you are, a freedom and power in doing what you want to do. Perhaps an unexpected dip in the pool? Did she really push him in? What could be more glamourous?
Treat yourself to a stay in one of our spacious luxury suites that pay homage to the fabled past of the landmark Miramar Hotel. A tribute to California’s Gold Coast era, we invite you to luxuriate in a timeless ambiance of understated sophistication and relaxation. https://www.fairmont-miramar.com/offers/

The original works were created by local California artists whose brilliant use of line and color, rich in bright blue tones, connects us with nature and the ocean nearby. There are mixed media pieces–paintings, sketches, prints, some made with found materials–including the work of Laina Miller, Khufu Najee, Jakia Monique and Ally Hilfiger.
Arranged to create a sense of movement and flow, while maintaining a feeling of balance and harmony, the Reception Gallery creates a curated space where guests can pause and ponder, whether arriving after a long journey or returning home.
The Reception Gallery was curated by Annabel Crook and Avigail Collins (pictured above) of the L.A.-based art consultancy An Old Family Friend, who have until now been focused primarily in the residential space with private and celebrity clients. Created in collaboration with the Fairmont Miramar Creative Team, the Reception Gallery is intended to evoke Miramar’s proximity to the ocean. The gallery is located behind the hotel's reception and adjacent to the Library, where we plan to host a series of cultural events for the upcoming year.
Based in Palm Springs, Ally Hilfiger–designer, painter, author and yes, daughter of fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger–just had a show open recently in LA. She has exhibited at the Chelsea Museum and Southampton Arts Centre in New York and has four pieces hanging at Miramar.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Khufu Najee, a painter, now works from his Laurel Canyon Studio. With two paintings hanging at Miramar, Najee, who also has roots in the worlds of music and fashion, is now working on his first solo exhibition.
Freedom! The Beach Boys called it “good vibrations.” At Miramar, SoCal beach vibes are everywhere, and it’s always an endless summer!
Kick back in the California sunshine, surf the waves at the exclusive Miramar Beach Club, sip a Mojito Royale with Bruno Mars’ SelvaRey Rum amid the lush tropical gardens or with your toes in the pool. Settle in for dinner and a movie at the Poolside Cinema with the family and grab an ice cream from the ice cream cart
Join us at the Bungalow every Thursday this summer from 5 to 11 pm for Night Market, an animated gathering of family, friends and community.
