The seeds of a remarkable meal—over the holidays, or any day—are planted with love and caring. For Chef Jason Prendergast, Director of Culinary Experience, FIG (pictured, right, with Chef de Cuisine “Chef E” Ihosvany Garcia), what makes a meal memorable is the spirit of giving. Prendergast creates collaborative relationships with local growers, ranchers, farmers at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market—all of whom have become close friends.

The Miramar has a long history of giving back to the local community. Stop by our iconic Moreton Bay Fig Tree from December 3-24 for our annual MEET ME UNDER THE FIG TREE drive, where you can drop off canned food and clothing (new or gently worn) for Santa MoniCARES, a partnership with Miramar that benefits the local nonprofits Westside Food Bank and Chrysalis. Pick up hot chocolate daily from 5-7 pm, and swing by the Tree for a festive photo op!
1880 s Philanthropist, botanist and socialite Georgina Jones built the original Miramar mansion with her husband. Georgina entertained Mark Twain and Susan B. Anthony at her literary soirées, and she planted our iconic Moreton Bay Fig Tree.
100 years
of history
1920 s The Miramar opened as a hotel in 1921 and quickly became a popular seaside resort. In 1924, Greta Garbo moved in as a long-term guest.
1960 s To complement the historical Palisades Building (shown below), the Ocean Tower was completed, along with a new swimming pool, which was featured in That Touch of Mink, the 1962 hit film with Cary Grant and Doris Day.
1930 s The Roaring Twenties ushered in an era of newfound freedom for women, symbolized by cigarette smoking, dark lipstick, short hairstyles including the “bob,” fringed dresses that skimmed the knee, drinking alcohol in jazz clubs and dancing the Charleston.
1970 s A group of locals formed the Z-Boys, a crew of surfers and skateboarders who inspired the movie Dogtown. The Z-Boys were part of the inspiration for Dogtown Coffee, a beloved coffee hangout at the Miramar.

The Miramar opened as a hotel in 1921, and we’ve had a long and storied history over these past 100 years. With guests like Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, President John F. Kennedy and more, we certainly have a lot to talk about!
To honor our 100th anniversary, we’ve commissioned a limited-edition poster, because who doesn’t love a collectible?
And we are excited to be working with Studio Number One, the iconic agency founded by artist and activist Shepard Fairey.

The Centennial Poster will be available for sale to locals and guests who hold a special place in their hearts for the Miramar and want to give back. Proceeds will benefit local social justice nonprofit and hotel partner, Liberty Hill.
Due to ongoing concerns surrounding large gatherings, and out of respect for the well-being of our partners, guests, friends and neighbors, we have made the hard decision not to host our event in person this year. Instead, we will be setting up oversized gift boxes under our historic Moreton Bay Fig Tree, where contact-free donations can be dropped off. Hot chocolate will be available for pick up daily from 5-7 pm, and we invite you to stop by for a festive photo op.

We will continue our annual tradition of collecting canned food, clothing (new or gently worn) and monetary donations for our annual Meet Me
Under the Fig Tree drive. We partner with Santa MoniCARES to benefit the Westside Food Bank and Chrysalis, nonprofits that provides support services to underserved members of the local community.
