Weekly Pastor’s Note

This week it has been such joy to share with believers from all around the world at the Baptist World Congress. It was a very inspiring time sharing and worshiping together and was certainly a taste of heaven with 3000 delegates from over 100 nations represented. I was deeply moved again around the truth that the good news of the gospel is for all people. There truly are no barriers in Christ and the Holy Spirit brings a supernatural unity that the world cannot comprehend. It was inspiring to hear stories of God working powerful in so many parts of the world, as well as to see firsthand the amazing diversity and varied expression of the church. Jesus is certainly on the move in our generation with a deep expectation for revival.

I want to say a big thank you to the amazing staff at Queensland Baptists for organizing such an amazing time together. I also wanted to say thank you to the many volunteers from Bridgeman who gave their time to serve across the week. It was a blessing to see so many serving in this way. Also a big thank you to our team who coordinated the tech and worship for the Next Generation component of the conference, James Harwin who served on the congress organizing team and others who assisted with video production, worship and other practical acts of service.

I also wanted to add a special welcome to any people visiting with us this weekend who have been part of the congress this week. We are so glad to have you worshipping with us.

This weekend we are also blessed to have a guest speaker from the congress sharing with us at our 8am and 10am services, Rev Wissam Nasrallah (Lebanon). Wissam is the Chief Operations Officer of Thimar, a non-profit organisation based in Lebanon that strengthens the witness of the church in the Middle East. Originally from France, Wissam and his wife Sophie moved to Lebanon in 2017 to support this vital ministry. He preaches regularly at Bikfaya Baptist Church and writes on faith, culture, and economics for the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary. He also offers insight into the complex political and humanitarian challenges facing Lebanon and the region.

Also at our 4.00pm and 5.30pm services we will be hosting a “Faith Under Fire” panel with other speakers from the congress. This panel, hosted by Ps Andrew, will explore how faith speaks into the heart of war, crisis, and recovery.

DO YOU RUN OR ATTEND A CONNECT GROUP?

We’re updating our records to better support and resource our Connect Groups. If you lead or regularly attend a group, please take a moment to fill out this quick form!

The panel guests will include:

Rev Wissam Nasrallah (Lebanon)

Rev Igor Bandura (Ukraine) – Vice President for International Affairs for the All-Ukrainian Baptist Union, representing over 2,000 churches. Igor is a pastor, theologian, and leading voice on how the church in Ukraine is responding to war with gospel-shaped hope and resilience.

Melissa Lipsett (Australia) – CEO of Baptist World Aid Australia. Melissa brings a wealth of experience in leadership, development, and church mission across local and global contexts.

This is sure to be another opportunity to be inspired, challenged and hear God’s heart for the world.

Today as we worship we can be faith-filled that Jesus is building His church and we are part of a global move of the Holy Spirit that is so much greater than we can comprehend. Praise God!

“I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

(Matthew 16:18)

"Captive in Iran" refers to the book written by Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh, detailing their 259 days of imprisonment in Tehran's Evin Prison for their Christian faith. It is available in the Bridgey Library.

Excerpt: “We arrived at the court and went into Mr. Sobhani’s office…. He sat straight in his chair. ‘ You have been making a lot of noise,’ he began. … ‘You are receiving hundreds of letters and postcards every day. Everyone’s accusing us of interrogating you about your beliefs.’ He got more agitated as he spoke, his voice rising.”
