A friend tells me it’s proper etiquette to invite our attendants’ parents. Is that really true?

Not at all. Surely you already have enough names on your guest list without adding the parents of your entire wedding squad. There’s absolutely no need to invite them unless you or your partner have an especially close relationship with some of the parents.

Is it necessary to have a receiving line? It seems hopelessly outdated.

A traditional receiving line is not necessary, but you and your partner should take time to greet all of your guests.

Stop by every table at the reception and thank your friends and family members for helping you celebrate. They will appreciate the opportunity for a little one-on-one time with you and your beloved to extend their congratulations and offer you their best wishes.

We haven’t booked a reception venue yet. What are some key things to keep in mind?

First, make sure that whatever site you choose suits your wedding style. For example, couples who want a big, formal wedding may opt for a grand, opulent ballroom while others may be going for something more low key. For them, something more cozy and intimate would be a better fit. There are tons of options to consider, from country farms and garden settings sophisticated city situations such as a loft or art gallery. Once you’ve determined your own

personal style you’ll be better able to narrow down your choices to find a site that’s totally you.

There are also a plethora of details to be aware of when you visit various venues. The room should be big enough for the number of guests and the dance floor should be an adequate size and well situated. Is there decent space for a band or DJ? Are there enough electrical outlets to accommodate all their needs?

Make sure there is plenty of parking and that the air conditioning or heating are in good working order. Check the restrooms, too, and find out if another wedding is going to be held on the premises at the same time as yours (you may prefer more exclusivity). Ask to see the venue’s insurance and health department certificates to confirm they’re up to date and ask if there’s insurance in place in case someone is injured on site. You’ll need to know what the reception package includes, such as gratuities for the maître d’, waitstaff and bartenders, and perhaps the inclusion of a wedding cake and basic decorations. And ask if any extra fees are required for valet parking, coat check and restroom attendants.

One last thing would be to make sure you are aware of your site’s postponement or cancellation policies. Discuss the last possible date for a postponement and what the financial repercussions are. Can you apply your current deposit to your postponed wedding date and will your payment schedule in the current contract still apply? Take your time, prepare a list of questions, get the answers and don’t rush into a decision. Remember, though, popular sites do get booked early on.

My partner and I are trying not to blow the budget, but everywhere we go the catering costs for the reception are so high.What can we do to save money?

A

There are a number of ways to save.

First, start with the guest list.

See if you can pare down. The more guests you have, the heftier your catering bill will be. As for specifics, offer a sparkling or white wine in place of champagne.

Forgo a four- or five-course meal and instead of a salad, an entrée and the wedding cake for dessert. And instead of pricey hard liquor, provide beer and wine plus one specialty drink. Ask your caterer for suggestions. He or she can recommend less expensive menu options for the cocktail hour and reception to help keep you on budget.

Like any event, there’s a lot of planning and prepping involved right up to the last minute. Your wedding day will be no different. Of course, our favorite part, and we would argue the most important of all, is the part where the bride sits for her hair and makeup and finally slips into the wedding dress. That’s the moment we’re waiting for!

Every issue we get to recreate these special moments, not just once but many times over. Our (very patient) models transform from sweet to sultry to sophisticated all in a day’s work. And when it’s over, the makeup comes off, the dresses get hung and packed up, ready to return to their makers. But for you, the bride, that dress is staying on until you’ve squeezed every drop of joy from it and the expertly applied makeup probably doesn’t come off until tomorrow morning. Bride, we see you!

Prepping for our photo shoots is a lot like prepping for that big reveal because you want that moment to be perfection.

Our checklist always includes: •Have your shade of nude, seamless undergarments on: never white, which will be visible. And leave the bells and whistles for the honeymoon.

•Make sure you’ve broken those shoes in before you have to spend the day in them. This is a model/bride must. Your feet will thank you.

•Put the gown on at the very last minute and whatever you do, don’t sit, crouch or bend in it. You want to keep it pristine. If it has sleeves, keep your arms straight down until you’re ready to take the bouquet and head down the aisle.

•Sweating is natural. Tuck tissues in your armpits to prevent any perspiration on the dress until it’s go-time.

•Apply fragrance with caution. Put it on before your gown and let it settle.

•Hydrate. Eat some protein. Use the bathroom. Sounds obvious, but it bears repeating.

we’re big fans and we would like to be a part of the “cult” Gaia please! Where did the name for your brand originate?

JLH: The name Cult Gaia came from a desire to create something more than just a fashion brand, I wanted to build a world. Gaia is the goddess of Mother Earth and the daughter of chaos in Greek mythology.

There’s something powerfully feminine and divine about that.

BG: When you started Cult Gaia back in 2012, did you ever think your collection would hit cult status?

JLH: Yes and no. When I started, I was handcrafting flower crowns for friends and festivals. There was no master plan to create a fashion label that would become what it is today. It was born out of pure creativity and instinct.

BG: You just launched a wedding collection, which we’re obviously thrilled about! Who is your bride? What’s her vibe?

JLH: I’m so excited you love it! Our bride is anything but traditional.

She’s confident, bold, and yet still so elegant. She’s the kind of woman who defies traditional expectations in the most graceful way.

BG: What’s your take on wedding fashion today?

JLH: The rise of the second dress, the afterparty moment, it’s all such a refreshing shift. I love the idea of celebrating every wedding moment, from the engagement party to the honeymoon, with looks that feel artful, modern, and unique.

BG: What’s one thing every bride should have from Cult Gaia?

JLH: The perfect statement accessory. Whether it’s earrings that look like wearable sculpture or our pearl bag that’s an art piece, accessories have always been a cornerstone of Cult Gaia.

BG: How did you decide to design a bridal collection?

JLH: We’ve always had brides coming to us for their second or third dress. There was this demand for bridalwear that felt elevated and otherworldly. So we listened.

BG: Tell us a little bit about the wedding collection.

JLH: The collection is rooted in our signature silhouettes but done in a more ethereal palette. We played with silks, lace, and structured crepes. You’ll see a lot of negative space, as we love using cutouts to highlight the beauty of the body in a refined way. The details are everything and make each piece feel like a treasure.

BG: We love that your collection is unabashedly sexy, but it also taps into an artistic side. Will we see more of this?

JLH: Absolutely. That’s the sweet spot for me—the marriage of sensuality and art. I want our pieces to spark joy and conversation, to be visually surprising, to make you think and feel something. We’re expanding on those illusions with plays on form and material into even more categories. I love pushing the boundaries of what fashion can be. Expect more magic.

A Master Plan

et the wedding planning begin! This should be one of the most enjoyable and creative processes you will ever experience.

But many brides and grooms tell me they get so overwhelmed they feel as if they’ve taken on a second job they’ve had no training for.

As for me, I started at 14, learning the craft of floral design while working at my grandfather’s flower shop. That’s where my journey began.

I truly believe I was born to create parties. Here, some of the planning aspects I love most—and least. Get the more difficult wedding elements under control and the rest should fall into place.

THE PROS (what I

)

• SETTING THE VISION Getting a chance to dive in and under-

• FLOWERS AND DECOR I love meeting with vendors in all areas

from invitations to flowers, colors and lighting. Whether discussing invitations, color palettes or venues with my brides and grooms, I always envision the overall celebration. Flowers are forever key: A bride without a bouquet or a table without a centerpiece isn’t, to me, a wedding. Soft colors, bold colors or combinations thereof create an overall style or even evoke a period in time. These visual components can be the most pleasurable parts of planning.

• FOOD AND DRINK It’s great to use food to tell the story of your

culture and background—this is something I always explore with my couples. Do take care, however, not to get on the full-on foodie bandwagon when planning your wedding, incorporating too many exotic ingredients that may make your guests uncomfortable. When it comes to beverages, specialty drinks have been a major trend but I am now loving specialty bars, such as whiskey, champagne and/or wine bars. Any of these options can make your wedding more unique.

• THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE I love the chance to make

special moments happen: perhaps a dance that no one knew about or changing up the timeline in a new way. I always say that something different should happen every 30 minutes. This allows guests to become interactive participants vs. inactive participants following the same old routine (ceremony to cocktails to dinner) and results in something special. This is what I will always love about doing weddings.

THE CONS (what I don’t )

• WHO’S INVITED? Determining the guest list can

be a tough task, as can deciding on seating arrangements: who should sit next to whom. Once this gets set, the sailing becomes much smoother, I promise!

• DETAILS, DETAILS Picking the perfect songs

for your processional, recessional, first dance and all of your important formalities (e.g. toasts) can be challenging, since these elements require a final, set-in-stone decision—you need to make sure everything is exactly as you want it. These all-important nitty-gritty details can be a chore, but they are essential to get right.

• TOO MANY COOKS You do not want a committee of opinions. Pick a few supportive friends and family members (three at the most) and trust in them to guide you and support you. The key word is support.

• TRAVEL LOGISTICS Coordinating travel details

for all your wedding guests can be mind-numbing, not to mention time-consuming. Instead of being the point person for travel questions, I suggest finding a good travel agent ahead of time (especially if you’re having a destination wedding!) who can handle these issues. It will be worth it if it means having time you would otherwise lose to focus on the other important details of your day.

• OVERSHARING (especially on social media) One of my ground rules: Don’t forget that some parts of your wedding should be a surprise for your guests, so don’t spill too many details ahead of time! 

stand what a couple is all about is the important first step to a beautiful event. My television work has always made it seem as if a super-specific wedding theme is mandatory, but please trust me when I say it is not. However, I do love when a couple knows the types of looks, colors, feelings and moods they want for their wedding. Ask: What are your favorite colors, historic eras, flowers, seasons? The answers will help you better envision the overall look of your wedding.

“As a planner, I’m constantly inspired by contradiction, and no venue showcases beautiful contradiction better than Hotel Chelsea,” says planner Lee Ramsay. “I wanted to play into that push and pull: elegance with an edge.” Ramsay mined the venue’s rich heritage at every turn, starting with invitations pay tribute to the hotel’s wrought-ironwork. Says Ramsay: “I don't just want guests to see a beautiful space, I want them to feel something as soon as they walk in.” The feeling was romantic on night one, an intimate rehearsal dinner in the Tea Room.

Ramsay and team sourced vintage cherub vases to reflect the Tea Room's cherub paintings, filling the vessels with red flowers for the rehearsal dinner. For the wedding dinner, “we wanted something dramatic—so we went with a sunken garden,” Ramsay says. “Utilizing some creative table design, we installed a lush garden that entertained guests during dinner, but didn't block their view from others across the table. We received a lot of feedback that the table/garden made guests feel special, warm, and welcome. As for the cake, this bride has a major sweet tooth, and we wanted the dessert to be an absolute showstopper, with the cake table itself, with its sprawling garden, drawing attention to the special cake-cutting moment.”

ometimes, dreams deferred can lead to golden opportunities. As a 2009 graduate of LIM College in NYC, lauded by Vogue as one of “the best fashion schools for design, marketing and more,” Michelle Oley struggled to find a footing in the fashion world due to the fallout of the housing market crash. Michelle did, however, land two game-changing internships: one with lifestyle guru and celebrity stylist Robert Verdi, the other with fashion designer and wedding planner extraordinaire David Tutera. Even though both internships sparked her interest in creative event planning, the sluggish job market meant accepting a catering sales management position, “Which turned out to be the open door I needed to start my own business,” says Michelle. “It was through working closely with couples on their catering needs that I realized I could also bring my fashion background and creative mind into the event design and styling portion of planning.” And just like that, in the fall of 2011, Michelle Elaine Weddings was born!

Hey, You Guys! Just like the maid of honor, the best man signs your marriage license as a witness. In addition, he brings the wedding rings to the ceremony and holds the officiant’s fee until after the ceremony.

• BE SENSITIVE TO YOUR BRIDAL PARTY’S TIME COMMITMENT. Decide on dates for showers and parties as soon as possible so they can clear their schedules.

• BE BUDGET-CONSCIOUS. Don’t assume that everyone can afford a bachelor/bachelorette party in Las Vegas, a $300 outfit or pricey spa treatments on the day of the wedding. Also, expect that you won’t receive expensive gifts from them—after all, look how much they’re already spending on the big day.

• BE A GOOD SPORT! Let them mock and tease you a little. They (hopefully) know your limits, so just go with the flow.

• BE GRATEFUL—EXTREMELY GRATEFUL. Honor them in the ceremony program, tell a member of the waitstaff to pay special attention to them at the reception and give each of them a fabulous thank-you gift with a handwritten note. 

THE LOCATION Your site, or venue, should have special meaning to you and be beautiful to behold, whether it’s by the sea or on a mountaintop, in a garden, a ballroom or on a yacht. Many couples are choosing historic homes with gardens or a friend or relative’s backyard. Go for a nature museum, a Napa Valley winery, a botanical garden or a New England inn. Rates may vary, according to the day of the week and the season, so prepare to negotiate for a good price. Parks can be perfect— and they can be had at low cost. Anything outdoors requires a tent or a backup indoor space. If you have to rent a tent, tables, chairs, a dance floor and other essentials, spend more for better rental items. You don’t want guests sitting on rickety chairs or dining at wobbly tables. Ask the rental agent for a discount for renting more than 50 of each of these items: chairs, tables, china and glasses.

You may be able to negotiate for a 10 to 20 percent break on the price.

Most people can distinguish a fine wine from a not-so fine one, so take a smarter approach: Schedule a winetasting with your site manager and bar manager, and ask to test well-rated wines. You might decide that the mid-list vintages are the perfect choices for your bar for less money. Ask about any so-called dead stock: for example, a leftover case of New Zealand sauvignon blanc or two cases of a Napa cabernet that they happen to have in stock. You can also save money stylishly by offering unique microbrew beers over imported brands.

THE DRINKS

THE MENU Couples quickly discover that catering can eat up the lion’s share of the wedding budget. Some tips: At the cocktail party, treat guests to hand-passed hors d’oeuvres—but limited to five or six selections. Ask your caterer about mixing some pricier, exotic foods into your menu, such as chunks of lobster added to creamy risotto, served in porcelain spoons. Or consider mini meat or veggie kebabs, as well as gazpacho served in shot glasses. The better the food looks, the more guests will appreciate it. If you fear you can’t afford a sit-down dinner, think again. Simple, delicious fare like three or four pieces of grilled shrimp or crab cakes, plus several marinated beef medallions and colorful steamed vegetables can be less pricey than you thought. A special sauce can punch up budget-friendly chicken or pasta, giving the impression that you spent much, much more than you did.

THE FLOWERS Since nothing says wedding more than beautiful blooms, don’t prune your petals too much. At the same time, instead of breaking the bank on large, ornate table arrangements, think small, in season and locally grown. Surround centerpieces with votives; choose inexpensive glass vases and use lots of greenery—green is always chic. Have your florist create one centerpiece and then gather your bridal party to copy it—you’ll save on costs and have a ball, to boot.

USE A LOCAL BAKER INSTEAD OF A SPECIALTY WEDDING CAKE DESIGNER TO CUT A MAJOR SLICE OUT OF YOUR DESSERT BUDGET.

THE CAKE Schedule a tasting with the baker and ask to sample the no-extra-charge flavors and fillings. A lemon cake with lemon buttercream filling and coconut shavings is a real treat, and it will look more expensive than it is. And don’t forget that a lovely two-tier wedding cake will look just as impressive as a five-tier creation that can easily cost four times as much.

Ready, Set, Cut!

No one will notice if you don’t have: EXTRA CEREMONY DECOR Skip altar flowers, pew decorations and a custom-designed aisle runner. Your wedding site is probably lovely as is.

VANITY RECEPTION DECOR Do you really need your names spelled out in roses on the lawn? Or silk table runners imprinted with your names and wedding date? No. Some couples have their custom monogram projected on the sides of the tent and on the dance floor.

If you don’t want to allot the money for lighting equipment, then don’t. Instead, create a glowing ambience with clusters of candles and votives on your tables.

AN ORNATELY DESIGNED CAKE Don’t spend hundreds of dollars on sugarpaste flowers, butterflies, piped-on pearls or a replica of the lace pattern on your dress. The amount of labor the cake requires will determine its cost, so keep the design simple and sweet.

FRIVOLOUS FAVORS Treat your guests to edibles, like cookies or chocolates, with DIY labels. Or try $2 packets of flower seeds from Home Depot or Lowe’s. Making charitable donations in guests’ names is a tasteful and cost-effective solution to what to give.

HIGH-END TRANSPORTATION It’s expensive to rent limousines—especially white limos—classic cars and party buses, and overtime charges can pile up. Instead, decorate your own or your friends’ cars, convertibles or even minivans, for fun rides to the ceremony and reception. Or just hire one limo for the two of you and one for your parents.

SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINMENT Do you need the most expensive chamber group in town? Of course not. DJs are less expensive than bands, but if you do want a live band, look for one with three musicians who can play different instruments. Or program a custom playlist with your favorites. Just make sure the venue has good speakers. 

SLOWER PACE, WELCOMING VIBES AND spectacular scenery are hallmarks of Sonoma, an esteemed wine region in a valley of the same name just 30 minutes from San Francisco. And that’s what drew Hayley and Steven Orengo to The Lodge at Sonoma for their wedding weekend.

“There were a few other things that sealed the deal for us,” says Hayley, a global events lead at a tech company. “First, we knew people could turn the weekend into a mini vacation if they wanted.

Second, we loved the idea of being able to come back easily. And third—this was a big one—when we met the wedding manager at The Lodge, we not only fell in love with the venue, but also instantly vibed with her.” And that’s exactly what they got—a beautiful, perfectly executed and personalized celebration in a setting that they’ll visit again and again.

when organizing their big day. “If there’s one thing I would definitely recommend, it’s hiring a videographer!” So many couples are focused on the logistics of the wedding that they “don’t realize how much you forget—getting to watch the ceremony again, relive the entrances, dances, and speeches has been priceless.”

She also stresses the importance of communication. “If you’re hiring an outside coordinator, I always recommend getting super clear on the logistics and expectations ahead of time—especially around how you want to feel, when you want them to step in, and where you want their focus to be.”

Steven showcased the absolute best of Sonoma for their guests. On Thursday night the bridal party did a tasting tour at some of the couple’s favorite wineries.

The welcome party was a casual gathering that gave guests time to savor the destination. “There’s so much to see and do, and we didn’t want the entire weekend to feel like it was scheduled to the minute.” And part of that was hosting the wedding and ceremony in the same scenic setting for a seamless, fantastical celebration. “On Sunday, we invited everyone to the hotel pool. It was the perfect way to wind down—sunny, low-key, “ says Hayley. “The pool day gave us one more moment to celebrate and soak it all in.”

with friends and family, Hayley and Steven spent some just-the-two-of-us time in their happy place. “We mini-mooned there right after the wedding for a few days, and it was the perfect way to ease into married life without the hassle of packing another bag or traveling too far.” They spent their days strolling, cycling and spa-ing.

They enjoyed live music on Tuesday night, wine tasting—two of their favorite wineries are Buena Vista and Anaba—and “eating too much delicious food.”
