My maid of honor is planning my bridal shower and we both agree that children shouldn’t be included. Are we wrong? And how do we let people know?

A

No, you’re not wrong unless you’re planning a non-traditional shower that will include husbands, partners and families.

But for the most part bridal showers are for the grownups. (Little ones can become bored easily especially if all those gifts don’t include any toys for them!) Have your bridal party address the envelopes to invited guests only and spread the word that the gathering will be just for adults.

Any advice on how we might save on drink costs? Can we provide our own liquor?

If you plan on having your wedding at a hotel or banquet hall, the liquor will probably be provided. You’ll be quoted either a per-person fee or a total price for alcohol in your contract. The same is true with established independent caterers. If the caterer you choose does not have a liquor license, he or she will coordinate with a liquor vendor and quote you a price per bottle. If there are bottles left over, you can keep them (or the caterer might be willing to reimburse you for them), so you’ll only pay for what was actually consumed.

If your facility allows it, you can supply the alcohol yourselves; this can be a huge money saver, especially if you purchase the liquor from a wholesaler. You will, however, have to order and arrange for delivery and cart away the unused bottles after the reception. Plus, you may be subject to a corkage fee, a flat rate

charged by the caterer per bottle opened, which can easily be $10 or more. Be sure to inquire about this beforehand.

Consider skipping the pricey hard stuff and serve less costly wine and beer only. Or offer the site’s less expensive brands instead of the premium; the same goes for house wines and champagne. Also, discourage the waitstaff from automatically refilling wine glasses at dinner.

We found a venue we like but I’d like the chef to revamp almost the entire menu. Is it OK to ask him for a lot of changes or would this be insulting?

A

Requesting minor changes to the reception menu is standard and most caterers will happily oblige. They’ll also prepare kosher, vegetarian and vegan dishes upon request. However, if your preferences involve completely revamping the menu then this might be too difficult for the chef. After all, his staff is trained to prepare certain types of dishes and a special order of different foods or ingredients that may not be readily available in his kitchen could be problematic and prove costly. On the other hand, depending on what your wishes are, he might be able to work with you. Why don’t you speak with the caterer about your menu requests before booking the venue? If he is unable to meet all your needs then you may have to compromise, especially if your heart is set on having your reception at this particular venue. Ask if he can prepare just one or two of your requests and then agree to the rest of the already established menu. But if you and your fiancé are real foodies, and the

My fiancé and I would like our guests to make donations to two of our favorite charities. Can we let them know through an insert in our invitations?

A

The best way to inform them is by word of mouth since gift-giving should never be mentioned in the wedding invitation. You can, however, set up a website and inform your guests that way. Share some information about your favorite charities and the reasons you have selected them. Include the addresses where donations can be sent, as well as links to the charities’ websites. On your wedding invitation you can include “For more information about our wedding please visit (your website link).” You can also create a registry of your charities with I Do Foundation and JustGive.

A

Wedding fashion today really has few rules, and as long as your decisions are purposeful, tasteful and carried through your entire event, you can’t go wrong. If you want to combine 18 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2025

your passion for pastels with seasonal colors, I suggest adding a touch of soft browns and creams to the mix—fall-inspired hues that are also a great combination with soft pinks, purples or blues.

I am having two maids of honor. One is awesome, the other not so much. She doesn’t want to help with anything. Even though she claims all is well when I ask her about it, I feel that all is not well. Also, my other girls are becoming annoyed and so am I. Would it be OK to ask her to not be in the wedding? —Liz

A

A wedding is really no time for drama, and an official removal from your bridal party will certainly spur that on. And, though this is your special time— you never know what could be the root of the problem. I would start by scaling back on her future involvement and focusing your attention instead on the happy bridesmaids—and on what really matters: your marriage. If the situation doesn’t get better, try having a conversation with her over

My bridesmaids have wildly differing body types. Is it okay if everyone is wearing a different dress? —April

A

Absolutely! At the end of the big day, you want your girls to look great.

Work on finding a dress that works for them all by choosing different styles but keeping the color and fabric consistent.

This is your supporting cast, and you need them to look and feel amazing.

Q

How do I choose between family (and future in-law) members and friends for my bridal party? I have so many in both groups! —Carla

A

Having too many candidates for a bridal party is actually a great problem to have! I’d say to go with your heart and choose the friends and family members that have known you the longest, or those whom you are closest with. No one can argue this decision.

As well, you might want to add a special note in your program thanking all of your family and friends for being a part of your very special day. ¢

You need your supporting cast to look and feel amazing, so go with ’maid dresses in different styles, keeping the fabric and color consistent.

Of course it’s OK! Bridesmaids should be unified in some way—and with more and more brides choosing coordinating dresses instead of matching—a lip color is a great way to do this. It’s also a lot more cost effective than requiring all your ladies to get a full head of hair extensions! I would even suggest purchasing tubes for each girl and slipping them into a chic little lipstick case for a great keepsake and thoughtful thank-you gift. When purchasing your shade just try to pick a tone and texture that flatters the group’s skin shades—such as a classic red.

“WHETHER IT’S HER WEDDING DAY OR THE RED CARPET, the most

important thing I tell all my clients getting ready for a big event is to pick a dress style that highlights their natural assets and then make them even better with these targeted moves,” says trainer Kit Rich.

Ground rules: Do 2 or 3 exercises that target each muscle group, performing 2 or 3 sets of each for 8 to 12 reps, depending on your fitness level. Do these moves as stand-alone workouts on days when you are time-crunched, otherwise, add these exercises to your regular cardio. Ideally, you are working out 5-6 days a week, doing your targeted toning moves every other day. Add resistance bands and loops, sliders and balls to up the intensity and fast-track your results.

Guests exited the ceremony through a hall lined with draping and florals that ombréed from pure wedding whites to jewel-tone brights that matched the color palette in the dining area. “Some of the tables weren’t large enough for centerpieces AND food, so we suspended the florals over the tables,” Jeannene said. During dinner, “We turned the ceremony space into the dance space, with sparkling disco balls, large silver and gold foil balls and chandeliers from the ceremony. Each step we took to completing the production was done with intention.”

Diva bridesmaids, meddling moms, inappropriate in-laws. Here’s how to handle them all, with grace and ease. by Michele Bender if you didn’t have to deal with friends and families. But it’s a time when everyone’s emotions can run high, explains Sheryl Paul, Boulder, CO-based bridal counselor and author of The Conscious Bride’s Wedding Planner. “Even though you’re the one getting married, it’s also a transition for them,” she says. Adds Jeri Kadison, a bridal coach and an expert in stress management in Teaneck, New Jersey. “Differences of opinion are a natural part of the planning process, and weddings can be stressful. But if you start with good, clear communication, you can keep everyone on the happiness track.” Here, some helpful tips.

The Problem ›› MEDDLING MOMS Mother-daughter relationships are complex enough. Add wedding planning to the mix and they get even more so. “A mother’s role in the wedding can touch on financial, emotional and cultural issues,” explains Bethann Schacht, bridal coach and director of Aurora Counseling Associates in Natick, MA. ›› FIGURE OUT THE FINANCIALS If your parents are paying for the wedding, they may do so with strings attached.

“My mother wasn’t sold on the wedding planner so she fired her,” says Lily, 24.

fiancé should figure out your budget early on and discuss with both sets of parents who will pay for what and how much.

If Mom and Dad are kicking in a large amount, ask them how involved they expect to be. If you find out they want a high level of control, you may want to think twice about the arrangements. ›› PICK YOUR BATTLES If you don’t care all that much about the flowers and tablecloths, give those jobs to your mom; if the dress and music are critical to you, take those tasks on as your own. When it comes to her desires versus yours, pick those that matter most to you and address them head on. Simply tell her, “I understand that you want me to wear your wedding dress, but finding my own is really important to me. However, I’d love to wear your earrings,” Kadison says. ›› GO BELOW THE SURFACE “When you’re able to recognize and address the issues underlying your mother’s behavior, the two of you can actually become closer through this process instead of more fractured and resentful,” says Paul. Think about what may be triggering your mother’s behavior; she may feel she’s losing her daughter, or she may be experiencing emotions that have to do with her own marriage. Perhaps she feels she has to plan your wedding because her mother planned hers. Have a heart-to-heart talk. Start by trying this: “Mom, I know this is a really emotional time for you, too. Can we talk about it?”

The Problem ›› INAPPROPRIATE IN-LAWS Everyone is familiar with that old saying, “A daughter is a daughter for life, a son is a son until he finds a wife.” The essence of this saying may be lurking behind your future mother-in-law’s outrageous behavior. “A wedding signifies that it’s time for a son to cut the apron strings and to make his future wife the number-one woman in his life,” says Paul. “A transfer of allegiance from mother to wife takes place and this may not be easy for his mom or his whole family.” ›› INCLUDE THE IN-LAWS Often, in-laws feel left out, pure and

Give him credit for his efforts.

Has he gone the traditional route of choosing a ring on his own, asking your parents for your hand and planning how to pop the question? In that case, by the time you’re engaged, he has done a lot of work, and he may prefer the ball to be in your court.

Divide and conquer.

“You may assume that your guy doesn’t want to be part of the process, so you do everything without him.

Next thing you know, you resent that he isn’t involved,” says Schacht. Have him take charge of the details that matter to him.

Play as a team.

“Often a couple starts out with an idea and then it snowballs. Now, the groom feels his day is nothing like what was discussed,” says Paul.

Make sure you’re sticking with your plan. “In the end,” says Schacht, “the details don’t matter as much as the fact that you carried out your plan together.”

“My in-laws were upset that we didn’t invite more of their friends. At the wedding, my mother-in-law acted displeased the whole time. It was mortifying! I think it was her way of getting even.” Though you don’t have to do everything they want, figure out how you can accommodate at least some of their wishes, so you start out on the right foot with your soon-to-be family. ›› BE CLEAR ABOUT THEIR ROLE Not too long ago, there were traditional divisions of wedding responsibilities.

For example, the bride’s family paid for the wedding and the groom’s paid for the rehearsal dinner. “But times have changed and these things can’t be assumed anymore,” says Schacht. So sit down with

your in-laws and decide what they will be responsible for. Say something like, “We understand this process can be difficult.

But we want everyone to be happy, so let’s agree upon what your roles are now.”

“Just don’t ask your soon-to-be mother-inlaw to be your wedding planner. For me, that ended in disaster,” says Beth, 25. ›› LET YOUR FIANCÉ DO THE TALKING If there are issues with the in-laws, let your groom-to-be step in and show his family that the two of you are a team.

“It’s part of his transition to manhood and a symbolic start to your life together,” says Paul.

The Problem ›› HIGH-MAINTENANCE BRIDESMAIDS “One of my bridesmaids showed up at my shower with a severe hangover,” says Sara, 30. “And on the wedding day she was late to the hair and makeup session.” When a bridesmaid behaves badly, there may be more going on than meets the eye. ›› ANALYZE YOURSELF FIRST Although you’re probably not making extreme demands, perhaps you’ve gotten a little carried away. “I loved the idea of my maids all having the same hairdo, so I suggested that one of them cut her bangs to match the others,” says Sue, 28.

“Later I realized how ridiculous it was and why she seemed so miffed.” ›› PICK A POINT PERSON Choose a go-to gal to be in charge of the bridesmaids. “Have her—not you—be the one to lead the way,” Schacht says. “She’s a neutral party, so it may be easier for her to organize them to plan the shower, for example.” ›› HAVE SOME GIRL TALK “Your ’maid may say that she’s ‘busy,’ but busy may hide her jealousy of your wedding or even disapproval of the groom,” says Schacht. She also may fear your friendship is going to change once you’ve wed. “Be up front,” says Paul.

“Try: ‘It seems to be hard for you to be a part of things. I’d like to talk about what’s going on.’ ” If she’s a true friend, she’ll be open to making changes. ¢ 29

Working long hours in finance in NYC, Hannah Abraham, née Geiser, didn’t have the bandwidth to “do the dating apps,” she says. One of her co-workers suggested Hannah consult with his wife, a matchmaker, and Hannah’s interest was piqued. Soon thereafter, the matchmaker zeroed in on Luke Abraham, an investment professional.

That morning Luke woke up with no sense of taste or smell—he’d tested positive for Covid! “He said he’d still like to meet me and asked if I’d be be open to Face-Timing,” Hannah says. “We FaceTimed for four hours and met up in person two weeks later when his quarantine was over— and the rest is history!”

Having summered in Nantucket since the age of one, it’s easy to see why Hannah chose the Massachusetts island for the wedding. There was no specific theme other than that “I wanted everything to be white and the hydrangeas to be blue,” Hannah says. Plus, “I love Serena and Lily,” so the couple’s planner incorporated the luxury brand’s chandeliers into the reception design.

Texas newlywed Ava knows what it’s like to be a budget-balancing bride. “Hands down, wedding expenses are the most stressful part of the planning picture,” Ava says. And stress often sparks mistakes, particularly on the financial front: Costs get overlooked or miscalculated and immediacy shoves aside diligence and patience as the swirl of wedding energy tramples logic, leading to purchases that will later be deemed superfluous. Fortunately, experience remains a wise teacher. So we asked recent brides to share some of their key lessons learned.

“I tried to plan the wedding from start to finish over the course of four months. The more truncated your planning time is, the more money that goes out in a few short months. I did not have much time between a down payment or deposit and the final payments. Over a more extended period of time, our wedding choices would have been much more affordable, alleviated quite a bit of stress and allowed me to manage the budget much more efficiently.”

any brides tell me that they’ve been “dreaming of this day all my life”—yet, whether you’ve already filled a binder with details for every event from engagement party through the honeymoon or you’re starting with a blank slate, there will be only about 13 months to plan your wedding and reception. Where to begin?

Set the date

This is a great way to get the planning started as it can help steer you in a particular direction—outdoors vs. indoors, for example.

Additionally, popular venues and vendors can book up well in advance, as can in-demand photographers, bands and DJs. Working backward from the date to prioritize which things need to be taken care of right away will help keep things progressing and keep you from panicking.

Choose your colors

Here’s another decision that sets other important planning wheels in motion, including invites, flowers and bridal-party gowns. The wedding color palettes I’m seeing for spring and summer are beautiful muted pastels—think Caribbean Sea or pale pistachio green. Don’t skimp here. Your guests will appreciate a great DJ, band or other fun activities. Entertainment is one area that brings people together and creates experiences that everyone will remember long after the celebration.

A Celebration in Paradise Enter Kayla and Brandon. College sweethearts whose love defied distance when Brandon graduated early and moved over a hundred miles away. Every weekend, he crossed the country with playlists and podcasts as his co-pilots just to see her. For them, the question wasn’t if they’d get married after Kayla graduated, it was where.

Their search for the perfect wedding destination led them to Jamaica and eventually to the most desirable resort on the island: Sandals® Dunn’s River. GILDED AGE MANSION SET IN THE picturesque Berkshires, a region which straddles northwestern Connecticut and western Massachusetts, proved the perfect wedding setting for Brynn Sussman and Doug Ammon.

Their shared nuptial vision, including nods to The Great Gatsby and an Italian villa, was becoming unwieldy, but “once we decided we didn’t want to involve airlines, we narrowed down the search to a six-hour limit from New Jersey.” Miraval Berkshires, an idyllic retreat set on a pretty pond, had everything the couple was looking for: “The Wyndhurst Mansion incorporates a European look and feel, and delivered grandeur mansion vibes,” they explain.

“It was the total package for our wants, all set in the natural beauty of the Berkshires.”

Brynn and Doug showcased as much of Massachusetts as they could with their menus. They leaned into the seafood classics of the state, “while also tapping into the farm-to-table feel of a quaint New England town like Lenox” (the storied community in which the resort is located). A cornerstone of the Miraval approach is its sustainable cuisine program. “All the food is sourced locally when possible,” note the couple.

We wanted a venue that was large enough to house welcome drinks in one location, rehearsal dinner in another, etc. And we wanted it to feel like ours for the entire weekend.”

Although Brynn works in the events space and could manage all the vendor contracts and production schedules, the couple leaned on Liz, the on-site coordinator for day-of executions. She helped with on-site coordination and bridal party movements and made sure all the details were taken care of. “There naturally are things that are going to pop up that you don’t anticipate, and having someone to handle all of that can help,” says Brynn.

The performing arts are equally important in this region, especially in summer. There’s Tanglewood, the seasonal home to the Boston Pops, Jacob’s Pillow, an internationally renowned dance center, and numerous theaters.

Since they didn’t have to fly to their destination, Brynn and Doug visited Miraval and the surrounding area five times before their big bash. And along the way, they picked up some favorite local attractions. Upon arriving in the region they immediately stop at “Loeb’s Foodtown of Lenox. It’s the quintessential northeastern deli. Doug is quite the connoisseur of deli sandwiches, and their Italian Sub is one of the best he’s ever had.”

For coffee and sweet treats they like Patisserie Lenox, and they go to Haven for iced lattes and blueberry muffins, a favorite of Brynn’s. “Old Heritage Tavern is a classic for us. It’s just a perfect, local American bar. It’s no frills, it’s all great food and good service.”

t’s hot in summer. If you want to just lie on a beach all day, OK, I’ll give you that. But if you’re looking for a more active, involved, touring kind of honeymoon, then you might have to cast a wider-than-usual net. I happen to not enjoy temperatures over 80 degrees (I’m Canadian!), so when the idea arose for a cruise from England to Iceland in the middle of summer, I jumped at the chance.

If you’re cruising out of England, as my wife and I did, you’re likely to embark in Dover. Seabourn is a luxury small-ship cruise line, and our vessel, the Seabourn Sojourn—at 650 feet and 229 suites—fostered a friendly atmosphere.

Nary a day went by without striking up conversations at a trivia match or fun informative lecture. And at many meals, we’d end up comparing culinary notes with folks at the neighboring table.

Speaking of meals, the food is on another level compared to typical cruise fare.

The main dining room is The Restaurant, with menu offerings divided into Classics that, for good reason, don’t vary (steak, lamb chops, etc...) and Innovations—

whatever is fresh and sparks chef Ainsley Mascarenhas’ fancy. Desserts were great.

A different soufflé every night? Sure, I’m in. Secret tip: Order a glass of Grand Marnier to spike your Grand Marnier soufflé, like they do in France. Another fave (my weakness): make-your-own affogato with espresso over a scoop of gelato. Did I mention that all is included?

Solis is Seabourn’s gourmet restaurant—their Snake River Farms steak for two was the best I’ve had in ages. Fresh, unlimited sushi is available at one of the bars every night at 6 p.m. Make it an appetizer if you wish (we did). Or you can have tapas at 6 in the Observation Bar. And afternoon tea. The choices are bountiful. All meals are also available at The Patio grill restaurant on the pool deck, which offers outdoor seating under heat lamps. I can personally vouch for their signature burger.

For breakfast you can do room service, which proves quite helpful if you have an early morning excursion and want to sleep in as late as possible.

But skipping breakfast in The Colonnade wasn’t something we did lightly.

The secret weapon against which I was powerless? A fresh-squeezed self-serve orange-juice machine you could indulge in freely. As they say, a day without unlimited fresh-squeezed orange juice is a day without sunshine. Are you getting the picture? This isn’t the Disney Cruise you went on with your parents, though Fantasyland isn’t a bad moniker.

Entertainment isn’t what you see on those mega-ships. No circus acts, no Broadway shows. There’s one main show most nights: Multi-award-winning lyricist Sir Tim Rice; dancers performing world hits; a comedian/magician who dazzled on Britain’s Got Talent...you get the idea.

And don’t miss the piano player at the Observation Bar, a chap named Ged on our cruise. Great fun, Ged related superbly with the guests. The bar seemed to be a

hangout for a cast of regulars before and after dinner. Join in if you please.

After stops at the Isle of Man and the Island of Mull in Scotland, followed

by Djúpivogur and Heimaey, Westman Islands, in Iceland, the cruise ended in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and, to be honest, only major city. But what a city it is! We stayed at the hip, centrally located Exeter Hotel. We walked everywhere from there. What to do in Iceland? For such a small country, there’s an overwhelmingly diverse set of options. Hot Springs? Yeah, they’ve got those.

Like, easily a dozen of them. We preferred Hvammsvík Hot Springs, where we spent a gorgeous and relaxing afternoon, capping it all off with a hearty fish soup at the property’s café.

As for summers in Iceland? We were told it was the best weather they had had all year. The high even hit 68 degrees one day! No more sweaty summer sabbaticals for me—this is the way! ¢ (For more info, visit Seabourn.com)
