That’s not to say that comfort should preclude style, but simply that these two things are symbiotic. Choosing a wedding dress that fits your personality and style is a major achievement. Applause! My fiancé and I would like to include our beloved dog, Ripley, in our wedding, and have him walk down the aisle at our ceremony. Any advice on how to proceed?

A

Couples’ pets are definitely playing major roles in weddings today. Just be sure your location site is amenable to having animals on the property and included in the ceremony itself (most religious venues will not allow pets). And consider your pooch’s personality traits. Is your dog comfortable around lots of people? Does he tend to bark loudly and/or often? Hopefully your canine is calm, loves people and obeys commands. You don’t want to risk including a pet that is irritable and snappish—or a frisky pup who won’t stay still for very long. Also, check with your venue to see if you might need a security deposit to cover any unforeseen accidents with your pet.

It’s a good idea to bring Ripley to the rehearsal to make sure he’s comfortable with his role and to have him practice walking and sitting at the site. On the wedding day, don’t give him too much food or water before the ceremony, but do have treats on hand afterward. Speak with your photographer to determine what types of shots you want taken with your pet. Do note that we wouldn’t recommend bringing him to the reception—better to make arrangements to have Ripley picked up after the photo session. However, if you do decide you’d like him to stay, designate a dog sitter to look after him during the festivities.

On our engagement party invitations, is it appropriate to let guests know where we have registered for gifts?

A

Registry information should never be included on engagement party or wedding invitations.

Stores or websites where you’re registered should only be mentioned on bridal shower invites or on your wedding website. But since it’s likely that some guests will want to bring gifts to your celebration, go ahead and let close friends and family know where you’re registered in case they’re asked. Also keep in mind that it’s best to open any gifts you receive in private—after the party—and don’t forget the thank-you notes!

Q

What’s the best way to distribute wedding programs? Should they be displayed on a table in the back of the ceremony site or should ushers hand them to guests as they arrive?

A

There are a number of ways to distribute your programs. But leaving them on a random table isn’t one of them.

You’ll find that many guests won’t notice that the programs are available until after the ceremony. Since you’ll be investing time and thought into writing and designing your program you want to make sure your guests appreciate your efforts and have them in hand during the ceremony. Ask your ushers, a friend or relative to pass them out to guests

as they arrive. They can also place a stack of programs at the end of a pew or on each seat.

Another sweet idea: As your guests arrive, have your flower girls distribute the programs from handheld baskets.

POP-IN PARTY

I received an invitation to a “pop-in” bridal shower taking place from two to four p.m. and would like to know how long guests are expected to stay?

A

For this type of shower, guests can stay for as long or as short a time as they’d like. “Pop-in” implies that this is a casual affair and invitees can come by anytime within that two-hour duration. There may be some light refreshments offered rather than a full meal, and if it’s at someone’s home there may be limited seating as well. You’re not expected to stick around for the entire two hours, so if you’d like to stop in about an hour after it starts and stay for 30 minutes that’s perfectly fine.

When it comes to weddings, everyone has questions, both couples and their planners, says celebrations expert David Tutera.

MY QUESTIONS What kind of wedding would you like to have?

The answer I often get is “We want a unique, different, creative wedding” —which is not the answer I am looking for. Every couple wants something unique; I want to see how far outside the box the couple wants to go. The style and personality they want to come through are important, but I need to understand how far they’re willing to venture—and how much they’re willing to break with the formula of a traditional wedding.

What’s your color scheme?

Surprise: A lot of my couples don’t have a ready answer. Think about specific colors, preferably bringing in fabric swatches, paint chip colors, screenshots—anything that depicts what you’re envisioning. Ideally, I like to see three color choices per palette: a primary color (your main color), a secondary color (your accent color) and a third color I call

the “finish” color: silver, crystal, copper or gold).

How would you like to infuse your personalities into your celebration?

I hope the couple answers by telling me more about who they are—the foods they love, their cultural backgrounds, stories about their relationship, etc.

The reason I ask this is so I can tell the couple’s story. The more personality and detail in your wedding, the more your wedding becomes your wedding.

What style do you live your life in?

Are you Modern? Classic?

Eclectic? Traditional? Retro?

I ask this question because the answer gives me a sense of who you are as a couple, as well as the way you like to live.

What style would you like your wedding to be executed in?

The style a couple wants for their wedding may not be the style they live their lives by. It’s often more of a fantasy they want to live out for that day.

MY COUPLES’ QUESTIONS How can I make my wedding different and unique?

Should we have an after-party or a separate late-night lounge area?

It isn’t about trying to find a unique theme or concept that’s different because that doesn’t necessarily make sense for who you are as a couple. Instead, aim for a wedding that breaks the mold of the traditional formula and timeline that everyone else follows. Have some interactive participation so your guests can’t predict what’s around the corner, and they leave feeling like they experienced—experience is they key word here—something unique.

Neither. Both break the energy and flow of the celebration, and you can lose guests that way. Keep everyone within the four walls of one space and try not to spread out too much for too long a period of time.

Instead, opt for switching up the environment over the course of the evening. Have a lounge area within your reception space, then change up the entertainment, music and lighting to create a new atmosphere and keep the party going strong.

In this case, the pool in question happens to be on the grounds of a 13th century castle in the hills of Tuscany, where Gloria and Collin Purcell had just celebrated their nuptials (as seen on our Wedding Album pages elsewhere in this issue). The color palette was realized in bold stripes throughout, including signage, food stations and pool floaties.

The light and delicious fare featured the couple’s favorite Italian cuisine: Aperol and Hugo Spritzes on tap accompanied baked-on-site pizza in five flavors—Parmigiano Reggiano with pistachio pesto, mozzarella with black truffle carpaccio were just two of the crowd-pleasers. Lemon sorbetto (served in real lemons), mini cannoli and sfogliatelle rounded out the menu. Guests were free to partake in lawn games and—of course—the sparkling pool. For a final flourish: Gloria and Collin made a stylish exit on a classic Vespa scooter. Vroom!

s written in the stars, those born under the sign of Leo are said to be gifted with a natural exuberance, outsized confidence, flair for the dramatic and strong leadership skills. So it’s not surprising that owner and creative director Gina Jokilehto credits the ongoing success of her wedding planning business, Shi Shi Events, to what she calls her own “BLE (Big Leo Energy).”

Says Gina, “If anyone can make something happen, it’s likely to be me, and I’m going to have the most fun while I do it.”

Moving from the music industry to experiential advertising, honing her talent for creating deeply immersive guest experiences along the way, Gina made an organic transition into the wedding planning space, launching Shi Shi Events online from her hotel room in Maui in 2005, basing the business in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.

“Let your friends or family members have control over planning these parties—that’s their domain as members of your bridal party,” says Lindsay Longacre, owner and principal planner of LVL Weddings & Events in Irvine, California. “Trust them when it comes to decor, activities and food.” But if you’re looking to point them in the right direction, or just

HOW’S INVITED? WHO HOSTS? HERE’S THE ETIQUETTE AND INTEL ON ALL YOUR PRE-WEDDING FESTIVITIES.

ENGAGEMENT PARTY WHAT IT IS: Exactly what it sounds like. Think of it as a kickoff to all the wedding events that will happen during your path to the altar. There aren’t many rules about what it has to be like, though it’s most popular to have a cocktail party at someone’s home or a favorite restaurant.

WHO HOSTS: “An engagement party is often (but not always) hosted by one or both sets of parents,” says celebrations pro Karen Bussen, who creates destination programs and events for the hospitality industry internationally. “If an aunt or a good friend wants to host the party, that’s fine too.” But don’t expect someone to host one for you. Engagement parties aren’t an obligation, and many couples today don’t have one at all.

WHO ATTENDS: Usually, it’s the bridal party, family and close friends.

Don’t feel like you have to invite a ton of people—it’s totally okay to keep this intimate. Just be careful not to invite anyone who won’t be on the wedding guest list.

WHY HAVE IT: “These types of parties are a great way to gather together your close family and friends to celebrate your recent engagement.” says Longacre. It’s especially nice to have if your families don’t know each other well, so they can get better acquainted.

WHEN TO DO IT: Soon after you get engaged—most ideally within three months—after all, that’s what the party’s all about. But you might want to wait until you’ve set a wedding date, says Bussen. “Everyone will ask when it is.”

GOOD TO KNOW: “One thing you may want to do is have a small registry ready, since guests might want to give you an engagement present,” says Bussen. But remember that people are not obligated to bring gifts, so don’t be upset if guests arrive empty-handed.

FOR A SUPER-FUN IDEA, CONSIDER HAVING A WORKSHOP SHOWER. YOU CAN HIRE AN EXPERT TO COME IN FOR AN HOUR TO TEACH YOUR GUESTS HOW TO ARRANGE FLOWERS, DO THE SAMBA OR ICE CUPCAKES. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO GET EVERYONE INTERACTING. BRIDAL SHOWER WHAT IT IS: A shower is a way of honoring the bride-to-be, and “showering” her with gifts for her new married home.

“For showers, there are usually three key components: refreshments, fun activities, like games or quizzes and the bride opening her gifts in front of her guests,” says Bussen, who is also the author of Simple Stunning Wedding Showers.

WHO HOSTS: Classic etiquette rules state that the bride’s mom or sister isn’t supposed to host the shower, says Bussen. “But these days, more and more moms and sisters are acting as hostesses for these fun festivities, and it’s really a personal decision.”

You might find that a relative offers to host one shower for you, and a friend offers to host a different, more laid-back bash, where you can invite your pals. Sometimes, co-workers will throw you a shower, too. It’s completely fine to have multiple showers.

WHO ATTENDS: Usually, it’s close female friends and relatives—just how

big the guest list is should be up to you and your host. But the same rule goes for the shower as it does for the other pre-wedding parties: Don’t invite anyone you won’t invite to the actual wedding.

“There is only one exception: an office shower. It is understood that you may not be able to invite all your co-workers to the wedding,” says Bussen.

WHY HAVE IT: Not only does a shower provide the couple with things that can make their newlywed house more of a home, it’s another opportunity to socialize with family and friends.

WHEN TO DO IT: Two to six months before the wedding is the ideal time, says Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event in Chicago. “Keep it spaced out from your wedding date.” That way, guests don’t feel like they’re going to so many wedding events right in a row.

GOOD TO KNOW: “The bride absolutely must write a thank-you note to each guest, and it should be personalized,” says Bussen. ➺

BACHELOR PARTIES THAT AREN’T TACKY Your guy may not want the typical night of male debauchery. If he’s looking for more ideas, how about suggesting some of these?

CONCERT He and his friends can go see a favorite band—and even tailgate beforehand.

KARAOKE Some karaoke places have private rooms you can rent out for parties, so anyone who sings only has to do it in front of friends.

OKTOBERFEST In the fall, plenty of restaurants and organizations put together these rollicking festivals with lots of beer and food tasting.

SPORTING EVENTS A group trip to a favorite baseball, football or basketball team’s game is a perfect idea for a sports fan.

GOLF OUTING, FISHING ADVENTURE OR CAMPING He can pick whatever outdoor activity he and his buddies are most into.

BACHELORETTE PARTY WHAT IT IS: Girl bonding. “Some people see the bachelorette party as a time for the bride to get ‘wild’ with her bridal party and maybe a couple other close friends,” says Longacre. But they don’t necessarily need to go all out.

For some, it’s an excuse to get together with girlfriends for some female-only fun. Some groups go on a weekend getaway to somewhere exciting like Napa or Las Vegas. Others just plan a classic girls’ night out.

WHO HOSTS: “The maid or matron of honor is responsible for planning and organizing the bachelorette party,” says Bussen. “All the bridal attendants are expected to help with the planning.”

WHO ATTENDS: Usually the bridesmaids, and maybe some other close girlfriends of the bride. “Destination bachelorette parties can mean a smaller group, since there will be travel costs,” says Bussen.

WHY HAVE IT: To let loose a little and have fun! Here you are spending time and energy planning your wedding. Isn’t it a great idea to unwind and chill out with your BFFs? WHEN TO DO IT: It’s a big no-no to have your bachelorette party within two weeks of your wedding. Your plate will be filled with to-dos at that point, and you don’t want to risk any partied-out bridal-party members on the big day. One to three months beforehand is a better idea.

GOOD TO KNOW: “The key here is to design a party that suits the honoree,” says Bussen. “Not everyone wants a wild experience.” And take note: “I recommend not posting bachelorette-party photos to Facebook, Instagram or other social-sharing sites where work colleagues, for example, could see them.” And make sure your partygoers know not to, as well.

WHAT IT IS: Most couples have a wedding rehearsal, where bridal-party members and parents (and grandparents) of the bride and groom gather together to practice their roles in the ceremony. Afterward, there’s often a dinner to celebrate with those VIPs. WHO HOSTS: “Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner has always been hosted by the groom’s family,” says Bussen.

“But these days, some couples prefer to host this dinner themselves or to have both sets of parents co-host.”

WHO ATTENDS: “In the past, this was just the bridal party and the immediate families of the bride and groom,” says Bussen. “But now, some people like to include out-of-town guests as well, since these folks may have come a long way to be with you on your wedding day.”

WHY HAVE IT: You’ll have your nearest and dearest with you to celebrate more intimately than you likely will on your wedding day. Often, the rehearsal dinner is filled with speeches and toasts from family members and friends, and the bride and groom present gifts to the wedding party members and parents, thanking them for their help.

WHEN TO DO IT: Usually the night before the wedding, or two nights before the wedding, directly after the rehearsal.

If you’re not having a rehearsal, it’s okay to still have a rehearsal dinner. You might want to call it a “welcome dinner.”

GOOD TO KNOW: If it’s the day before the wedding, best not to plan this party to take place too late at night, since most people will want to be well-rested for the wedding. Consider hiring a photographer to come to this bash, since it’s often a very meaningful event. 

February 2022, a few years after meeting on a dating app during their last semester of college, found Gloria and Collin Purcell on vacation in French Polynesia. Having just arrived at their overwater bungalow in Tahiti, Gloria suggested a quick dip in the water to jump-start their holiday, and was surprised (and a tad suspicious) when Collin declined, saying he’d prefer to get dressed up and explore the resort…

….Gloria went along with Collin’s plan, and as she was getting ready, heard a knock on the door. It was a member of the staff asking if it was a good time to set up for a private dinner on their deck. A moment later, a photographer appeared, Collin went down on one knee and proposed.

Fast-forward to 2024, a glorious celebration at Castello di Celsa in the heart of Tuscany. A charming save-the-date video was sent out to guests, setting the stage for the joy-filled celebration to come. Why Italy? Gloria and Collin had traveled there multiple times, and wanted to share their deep love for the country with family and friends. (They also hosted 23 members of the wedding party and family in the castle over the wedding weekend.)

A welcome party on a covered patio kicked off the festivities. Originally envisioned to be held outside, a Plan B took effect when a storm rolled in and the event team, led by First Pick’s Jen Bergmark, made a quick pivot, moving both the party and the long serpentine dining table to a covered-butstill-outdoors area. Spirited folk-dancing and tambourineplaying ensued, fueled by a bounty of pasta and wine.

The sun reappeared on the big day, the better to fully enjoy the garden wedding, bedecked in white flowers and lush greens and set against the Tuscan hills. Hints of red and other autumnal shades found their way into the reception decor, while colorful tableware—and exquisite food—imparted a traditional Italian vibe. Says the couple: “Intimate, romantic, and effortlessly stunning, our wedding was perfectly us and a weekend we will never forget.”

Did these must-haves prove to be worth every penny? While some brides have few regrets, others, in hindsight, might make a different choice, pocketing the savings or redirecting their cash elsewhere.

Here, their shared wisdom.

THE SPLURGE

A SHUTTLE BUS FOR GUESTS

WORTH EVERY PENNY, says Melissa.

“We wanted an outdoor wedding that was different than the traditional banquet hall setting and a site that could accommodate at least 150-200 guests. We found an apple orchard and barn in northwest Indiana, about an hour from downtown Chicago.

Though the venue rental price was still about $3,500 and the per-person price was around $85, we actually found savings in the long run since the sales tax was significantly less in Indiana than if we had found a similar venue in the Chicago area.

It was something we could have easily overlooked and I’m glad we didn’t.”

WORTH EVERY PENNY, says Amanda.

“Our wedding was small—about 50 people—and a majority of those guests had traveled from out of town to Miami, where we were married and lived at the time. So for most of our family and friends, it was a destination wedding. They had spent a lot of money to fly to Miami in February and we wanted it to be a celebration they would enjoy without having to worry about driving themselves from the hotel to the wedding and reception venue and then back to the group hotel. $500 well spent.”

COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT, says Danica. “We had a small, intimate destination wedding out of state, and a larger luncheon reception back home with our family and friends. I had no desire to plan a wedding and with all the moving parts we felt it would be a good choice to have someone else plan it for us. While it could’ve been the particular planner we hired, it wasn’t worth the $3,500 we paid, especially given our already super small budget. My husband and I found ourselves undertaking more venue and vendor research than we’d expected and we probably could have done everything that was accomplished without our planner’s help—and at a quicker, more efficient speed, too. To add insult to injury, on our wedding morning we discovered that no one had assembled any of the signage, table numbers, centerpieces or favors—tasks we paid the planner’s team to take care of. Luckily, we were able to outsource these last-minute jobs to friends and family.”

A PORTABLE RESTROOM COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT, says Jessica. “Everyone we spoke to insisted we rent a portable restroom for our backyard wedding and reception—about 80 guests at my parents’ home. We were advised that having so many people at the house could easily overwhelm our septic system, and, in truth, temporary restrooms are a very common sight at the many parties and benefits in our seaside community. I hated the lowest-priced restrooms, which looked like they belonged at a construction site, so we spent $800 for a nicer-looking ‘luxury’ model. The lack of signage and the location (tucked away by the driveway) may be the reason that at the end of the day, the facility stood unused—and fortunately, our plumbing system was totally fine.”

A PROFESSIONAL DJ

WORTH EVERY PENNY, says Lisa. “My music-obsessed husband wanted to put together his own iPhone playlist and not use a DJ, but I convinced him otherwise, ➺ 37

and I’m so glad I did. The DJ kept the energy up the entire time. There were no awkward breaks or moments of ‘What now?’ It totally made the event smooth and fun. While using our own playlist would have saved us close to $1,000, a digital device just can’t fill in gaps or read the crowd. It was just so nice to have someone else make sure everyone was having fun, which then allowed us to focus on chatting with guests.”

the idea of a top-shelf, handcrafted whisky bar for the cocktail hour. The hotel where we held our wedding offered the option on the catering menu so we booked it at a cost of—get ready—$64 per person for one hour! It added a wow factor, but not as many guests indulged as we thought. Looking back, we definitely could have put the almost $6,000 to better use.”

Kiki. “We spent an enormous, enormous amount of money on florals and decor— close to $20,000. Honestly, I went nuts to the point that a refrigerated truck was driving flowers to the venue and a crew was removing pictures from the walls of the banquet room, hanging fabric to create curtains, creating a floating floral wall behind the chuppah, floating candles in the pool, glass terrariums on the tabletops, ivy chandeliers and so on to completely transform the space. It was absurdly beautiful, but beyond pricey. If I were to do it again, I’d set a realistic floral budget and stick to it. I’d also try to work with the ambience the venue already offered, rather than attempt to totally transform the space.”

VIDEO PACKAGE, INCLUDING A 5-MINUTE HIGHLIGHT VIDEO WORTH EVERY PENNY, says Sarah.

“Not only did we have a still photographer, we hired a videographer who would capture every one of our day’s details and then create a separate 5-minute highlight video in addition to DVDs (total cost: $2,000). This allowed us to show off our celebration on social media and gave us a chance to easily and quickly revisit our special day. Having our highlight movie just a click away is the best.”

“My wedding planner insisted that they set the tone for the entire event. I hesitated though— after all, the cards just go in the trash. But with about 80 percent of our guests coming from out of town, having such nice save-thedate cards was a bit of a draw to get them excited. Spending $1,000 on those cards was the one thing I thought I’d regret, but ultimately I’m glad I did splurge.”

A CANDY AND PASTRY BAR COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT, says Brianna. “We spent $2,000 on a 12-foot candy and pastry bar stocked with macarons, bite-size brownies, doughnuts and cupcakes, rice krispie treats, customcolored M&Ms, ribbon candy and more, plus another $300 on signage and mini to-go pails and fabric bags. The display was over-the-top gorgeous, and I think people thought it was appealing, but there simply wasn’t enough time for anyone to partake and enjoy all the treats after a full meal, wedding cake and dancing.”

DESIGNER HEELS

COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT, says Rachel, “which is why I actually returned them before my wedding date. I fell in love with this $450 pair of shoes and bought them on the spot. I wore them around the house for a few days, but just couldn’t justify spending so much money on shoes, despite how pretty they were—especially knowing that people wouldn’t even see them. I was very happy I returned them and found a pair for about $50 that looked just fine.”

DIY or DI DON’T Many brides tackle DIY wedding projects to offset the budget so they can splurge elsewhere. Here, some recent brides assess their efforts.

DIY YES! Megan crafted the signage and welcome boxes for her wedding and found her DIY efforts proved “therapeutic for the planning stress.”

DIY NO! Laura tried to make her own bouquet and wedding favors.

But when those tasks proved too time consuming, she opted for ready-made solutions. And though she did make her own centerpieces, she says it wasn’t worth all the fuss. “People remember the free margaritas and the party, not what was on the table,” she says.

DIY YES! Julia tackled a number of DIY projects to save money and personalize the day. She made table runners, centerpieces, favors, corsages, boutonnieres, programs and gifts for the wedding party and both sets of parents, corralling help from friends on various “wedding work days” at her home. It was a significant amount of work, Julia admits, but also what elevated her wedding day into something truly special. “We incorporated so many small touches that reflected us as individuals and as a couple.”

DIY NO! For her destination wedding, Tarah handcrafted personalized beach bags packed with practical items like sunscreen, lip balm, ibuprofen and trail mix. Though many of her guests used the items, Tarah confesses it was stressful to create 45 bags and a gigantic effort to transport all of the completed bags down to Mexico.

DIY YES! Alongside her mom, Katie made all of the desserts for the sweets table to provide guests dancing into the night an extra boost of energy.

Many of the treats relied on recipes from Katie’s late grandmother, which injected added emotion into the DIY effort. “It was as if my grandmother were there with us,” Katie says. “It was a lot of work, but I’d do it again.” ¢

Frogs, sloths, monkeys—oh my! This is the rainforest of Costa Rica, a vibrant ecosystem ripe with dense foliage and fauna. hen Florida couple Rylie and Dalton Sarver say they love the beach, they mean the sea is inextricably linked to their souls and relationship. She’s a fish biologist and he’s a first mate on a charter boat and, according to them, “one of the most important things in our relationship is our love for the water, especially our beautiful emerald green water.” Together they “spent and still spend a majority of our free time on our iconic beaches, fishing, shelling and snorkeling.”

And when it came to swapping vows they wanted to share that love of the shore with their friends and family in a destination that was local but still felt like a vacation. “The Beach Club at Sandestin gave us the perfect paradise while staying close to home.”

When it comes to local adventures, the fish biologist (Rylie) and the first mate on a fishing boat (Dalton) may be a little biased but they agree that “the most underrated experience is a fishing charter, specifically an offshore fishing charter,” which comes equipped with a knowledgeable captain and crew.

For San Francisco area couple Ashley Lu and Joey Carney that place is the Four Seasons Resort, Punta Mita, an elevated enclave on Mexico’s Pacific coast known as the Riviera Nayarit. “Punta Mita is Ashley did most of a hidden oasis that we feel not the planning herself. many people have discovered and we wanted to bring our friends and family to a spot that was special to us,” explains Ashley. “My husband and I visited the Four Seasons, Punta Mita and immediately fell in love with the resort.

Everything from the people/staff, restaurants, food, activities, beaches, pools and rooms and the service was the best of the best,” she says. And that extended to their destination wedding weekend, which they hosted in December so they and their guests could savor the resort in its best season. ➺

The collection of islets in the Bay of Banderas is a natural wildlife sanctuary. Once there, guests enjoy snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. A quiet cove called Secret Beach with its golden sands also beckons.

“Over the weekend, there was no reason to leave the resort, because it has everything—pools, lazy river, food, gym, spa.” Part of the charm of the property is the array of amenities, and the couple hosted their events across different outposts. “The ceremony was on their main beach, dinner was at Bahia, the beachside restaurant, dancing was back on the beach and the after-party was in the kid’s game room, which we turned into our own house party/speakeasy.”
