I plan to take my husband’s last name after we’re married and will notify business clients of the change. What’s the most professional way to do so via email?

It’s best to send a mass mailing to clients stating “For future reference, please note my new email and last name, Marisa (maiden name) Wright.” Keep your old email address for a while and if any of your clients continue to use it, you can gently remind them to take note of your new contact info.

Also, be sure to update your info with the following: Social Security (you’ll need an original marriage license for verification), voter registration, credit-card issuers, banks, insurance companies, frequent-flyer programs, utility companies, investment firms and your doctors. And don’t forget to get a new passport and driver’s license.

It’s actually a good idea to carry two photo IDs with you for a while, one with your maiden name and the other with your married name in case you ever encounter a problem when dealing with any of the above institutions.

My daughter is going to be a flower girl in my brother’s wedding, and the maid of honor asked if I would like to help pay for the bridal shower. As much as I’d like to participate, we are on a tight budget. Am I expected to contribute to the cost of the shower?

Short answer: nope. The shower is the bridesmaids’ responsibility. The couple’s mothers may also offer to chip in.

The parents of the flower girl and ring bearer are only required to pay for their children’s attire, shoes and accessories and any travel or lodging expenses. You can politely decline and offer to help with decorating and setup, if you’re able. Let your brother and his fiancé know about her request. Should there be any grumbling, your future sister-in-law can set the record straight with her attendants.

My partner’s parents think everyone invited to a wedding should be able to bring a guest. What’s the rule?

Here’s the rule: You don’t need to extend plus-ones to single friends and family members. In fact, most couples don’t— unless they have an unlimited budget.

You should, however, include partners of the following: anyone married, engaged or living with a significant other and anyone who is in a long-term relationship.

On our save-the-date notices, how should we ask our guests to RSVP? Text? Email?

Your save-the-date notices do not require an RSVP. They’re sent simply to alert guests to the time and place of the wedding so they’ll have ample opportunity to make their travel arrangements. Reply cards are enclosed with the wedding invitation only, or you may guests to RSVP on your wedding website. However, if you would like to get a rough guest head count now, you can follow up via emails or texts.

Keep in mind, that it may be too early for some people to confirm, so be sure to get

your invitations out four months before the big day (especially if it’s a destination wedding), and ask to have responses in at least 10 weeks before the wedding. That should give you plenty of time to finalize everything with your pros.

What’s the right amount of money for a wedding gift? I don’t want to appear super-cheap, but I’m desperately trying to pay off my student debt.

There isn’t a golden rule or any set amount that’s considered appropriate for a wedding gift. Basically, you give what you can afford. With student loans to pay off along with other living expenses, it’s perfectly understandable that you might not be able to be as generous as you’d like.

If writing a check makes you feel uncomfortable, then select an item from the couple’s registry that suits your budget.

Your friends will love getting a gift they registered for, but more importantly, they’ll be glad you were there on the big day to share in their celebration.

It’s all too easy to fall off the healthy-food track after the big day. Here, some key guidelines for newlywed nutrition.

I

t was a light-bulb moment for New Jersey-based Mandy Enright, RDN and certified yoga teacher, expanded her soon-to-be-wed client base in 2015, taking on already-married couples seeking to maintain (or return to) their wedding-goal weight. Since then, Enright has grown her practice, working with brands and corporate clients—but her basic rules still apply. Here, she shares some of her signature wellness wisdom.

What are the best ways to get back on track, food-wise, after the wedding?

A

Planning really is the key when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. Just like no bride is going to wing it on her wedding day, you need to plan for healthy

eating and exercise as well. I always encourage my clients to plan their meals for the week, and use that plan as the basis for their shopping list.

And what are some common misconceptions?

People think that healthy eating is expensive. But when you do the math, a homemade meal will always be less expensive than going out to eat.

Convenience foods (pre-cut or prewashed fruits and veggies) inevitably cost more, which causes you to assess what your time

Or they get on the scale and actually punish themselves by not eating if it’s a number they don’t like. That is not a healthy relationship with food or yourself.”

• PLATE FOOD BEFORE SERVING. “I grew up in a traditional Italian household where every meal had large serving platters placed in front of us. Seeing the additional food as you’re eating makes it more tempting to go back for more. Plating the food not only helps with portion control, but also allows me to account for leftovers that can go toward another meal.”

• STICK TO ONE PLATE. “Fill half of it with veggies (and/or fruit), ¼ with a lean protein, and ¼ with a hearty whole grain. Make sure there is a variety of nutrient-dense food at your meals. It’s more important to have a healthy complete meal rather than worry how many calories are on that plate.”

• FORGET “GOOD” AND “BAD”. “There are no good or bad foods, only food.

And all foods fit a healthy eating plan—it just comes down to moderation.”

• MAKE THE TREATS SPECIAL. “My husband and I love ice cream. But to me, it’s more worthwhile to get in the car and drive to the homemade ice cream parlor versus going in my freezer and scooping out some store brand. By having to go out of my way to get a treat, it makes me assess how badly I really want it (as opposed to just being bored).

I get my scoop in a kiddie cup, and I’m happy with the small serving I get to enjoy.”

is worth. For me personally, my time is not worth washing and spinning a head of lettuce until it’s bone dry; I always buy the prewashed lettuce because it’s so much easier. But I buy just about all of my fruits and veggies in their whole form due to cost.

What are the biggest obstacles to healthy eating?

What about eating at restaurants? Any strategies?

A

The food-service industry preys on immediate gratification and convenience, which often leads to poor choices.

If you can plan accordingly, you will have healthy food in your home most of the time and make better choices. Have one or two go-to meals in your arsenal that you know can be made under 30 minutes.

Use your freezer to store some back-up meals that can be heated when needed (but not frozen pre-made meals, those are scary calorie bombs). Or have a place where you can pick up relatively healthy meals—local delis or supermarkets offer healthy to-go meal options —just be mindful of the portion sizes.

My husband and I usually go out to eat two times a week. Typically we’ll share either an appetizer or a dessert, very rarely both. And often we’ll coordinate our entrées, which means we’re that couple exchanging dishes across the table halfway through a meal. And we both aim to take enough food home with us to make another meal, which helps on nights when we know we’re working late.  March/April 2024 BRIDALGUIDE.COM

BUDGET BREAKDOWN Average wedding cost NYC metro • $46,756*

VENUE: 16% When deciding on the right locale, Brooklyn-based wedding planner and designer Jove Meyer calls “getting clarity on costs” the first order of business. “Some venues have no rental fee, just a food and beverage minimum, whereas others don’t do food and only make money on venue rentals.”

A full-service venue that includes food, beverage, staff and space often helps the budget, Meyer says.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 31% Outside of reducing the guest count, Meyer suggests exploring other creative cost-saving measures. For instance, forego appetizer stations in favor of passed appetizers during the cocktail hour or downsize from a fully stocked open bar to a limited bar featuring select beers and wines.

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 16% Meyer suggests couples book an eight-hour minimum for photo and video coverage.

“But 10 hours if you want full coverage of getting ready through dancing,” he notes.

Booking one company that shoots both photo and video rather than two separate teams can spur savings.

ENTERTAINMENT: 5% Entertainment costs will shift dramatically if couples select a live band over a DJ. For those dead set on a band, which can cost about five times more than a DJ, Meyer recommends sticking with the core band members and being mindful of their time.

SOUTH

For the ceremony and cocktail hour, for example, couples might pipe in a playlist through the venue’s speakers instead of having live music.

RENTALS: 16% Rentals like tables, chairs and linens can be both functional and decorative. For the budget conscious, Meyer suggests chairs that work for both the ceremony and dinner, favoring on-site rentals. And, for those really seeking savings, consider disposable dinnerware for buffets or beach weddings—chic options abound, from sustainable bamboo to glossy acrylic.“Just keep the glassware,” Meyer says.

FLOWERS: 16% A living product requiring staff, storage and transportation, flower costs frequently surprise couples. Meyer offers these tips: Instead of full bouquets, have your ’maids hold a single bloom, a fan or other pretty prop, and avoid any floral arrangements that require on-site construction.

VENUE: 25% Charlottesville, VA-based wedding planner Alana Futcher of Chancey Charm Weddings urges couples to take advantage of the region’s many venues capable of accommodating the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. “You can give your guests different experiences at one location and often capture some savings, too,” she says.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 35% Futcher recommends couples carefully review the caterer’s proposal to see if there are any menu items that require special equipment for prep or extra staff for serving—both of which add extra costs.

ENTERTAINMENT: 7.5% Favor entertainment that performs double duty, Futcher says, such as those who can play music and serve as the evening’s emcee. Booking a band? Then inquire about additional music options for the ceremony and cocktail hour, which will often be more affordable than bringing in a separate entertainment provider. And don’t forget to ask about the inclusion of sound systems.

“You don’t want to have to rent a sound system at the last minute,” Futcher says.

RENTALS: 10% As with catering, the guest count can intensify rental costs—more chairs, more linens and so on. A venue with chairs, tables and the like included in the price frequently spurs savings compared to renting such items. “See what equipment rentals are already included in your venue and, most importantly, clarify what needs

to be brought in,” Futcher says.

FLOWERS: 7.5% It’s a universal, often-overlooked floralbudget truth: “The more bridesmaids and groomsmen you have, the more bouquets and boutonnieres you need,” says Futcher.

“And the more guests you have, the more table centerpieces you need.” Ask the florist for ideas on what pieces from the ceremony can be repurposed for the reception—just be sure to monitor the fees for moving flowers between locations. ➺ 27

MIDWEST BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost Chicago metro • $37,769*

VENUE: 15% When comparing venues, Kate Lerman, owner of Chicago Vintage Weddings, urges couples to consider the overall value, not simply the final tally. A venue with tables and chairs, a stage and a quality sound system on hand might cost more than raw space, but ultimately prove more cost effective since those items won’t need to be rented. Still, Lerman encourages budgetary vigilance.

Some venues, she says, have “hidden costs” like strict vendor lists or in-house services that might not be “as flexible or affordable as couples would like.”

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% With food and beverage service greatly impacting the overall guest experience, couples are right to invest in it. Still, Lerman suggests couples ask caterers about their most affordable meal format.

In some cases, plated meals might be more economical because fewer rentals

are needed compared to a buffet or family-style meal.

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 14% If couples love an established professional whose fee is simply too high, Lerman suggests asking that pro about more economical associates, perhaps someone the pro trained. Also, review the contract regarding digital rights. “This will allow you to make your own prints and albums instead of having to order them through your photographer,” Lerman says.

ENTERTAINMENT: 8% Whether a couple chooses a DJ or a band, Lerman recommends asking the music pros if they will work with the venue’s sound system. “Just because it’s available doesn’t mean they’ll want to use it, and that will drive up costs,” she says, noting that many music pros prefer the reliability of their own equipment.

RENTALS: 8% Though optional, Lerman says fun extras like vintage lounge furniture and photo booths add to a reception’s vibe without breaking the budget. In some cases, these goodies can be available from existing vendors. “So, ask,” Lerman says.

FLOWERS: 8% Lerman advises selective extravagance.

“You don’t need giant centerpieces on every table,” she says. “Instead, have some showpieces and keep the rest more modest. This will save a lot of money and provide a pleasing texture and variety to your wedding style.”

SOUTHWEST

VENUE: 15% Houston-based destination wedding planner and designer Skylar Caitlin says many notable venues in the Southwest offer more than raw space. That’s a plus, as it means many items are conveniently and affordably factored into the venue costs.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% Given catering’s hefty costs, Caitlin urges couples to prioritize. If premium liquor is paramount, then consider a buffet dinner to offset costs. If a grandiose display cake 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM March/April 2024

And rather than trying to slash catering costs to the bone, investigate trades such as swapping the salad course with additional cocktail-hour hors d’oeuvres.

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 10% Avoid selecting the photographer’s lowest option package, which often fails to provide enough hours of coverage and excludes extras you may end up wanting.

“You can chat with them about removing items like prints or albums, but remember that adding these on later will typically cost more when they are not a part of the package,” Caitlin says.

ENTERTAINMENT: 9% DJ’s, Caitlin reminds couples, will almost always be more cost-effective than bands, where costs can escalate if lighting or a stage is needed. For those dreaming of live

music, however, Caitlin proposes bypassing full-fledged bands in favor of string quartets or small acoustic groups who can play during the ceremony or cocktail hour.

RENTALS: 6% According to Caitlin, minimizing the rental budget starts with selecting a venue that doesn’t need a lot of “dressing up.”

“Draping, false walls and replacing unsightly banquet chairs can add up fast,” she says. She suggests pushing the rental budget toward high-impact places, such as a backdrop for the band or higherquality linens.

FLOWERS: 10% Provide a color palette, your likes and dislikes and then give way to the professionals, Caitlin says. But do tell the florist you want to reduce and recycle. Bridesmaids’ bouquets can double as flowers at the reception bar while the ceremony’s floral wall can later serve as a photo backdrop.

VENUE: 20% The Western U.S. offers an array of desirable, picturesque venues, though those with ocean views carry a premium price, reports Jen Bergmark, owner of First Pick Planning based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA. Yet many venues do not include rentals, which means every element of the wedding needs to be brought in—which can add up. While a full-service venue can lower costs, so, too, can a weekday wedding. For those less traditional couples, a non-weekend wedding can provide substantial cost savings, even at some of the most sought-after venues.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 30% Bergmark isn’t one to support food and beverage service as a money-saving area.

After all, cutting corners and veering away from a professional caterer with reliable, qualified staff can affect a wedding’s vibe

and hamper the guest experience. Still, Bergmark says, “Your caterer can suggest cost-cutting suggestions without compromising quality of service or food.”

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 12% Reminding that pictures and videos are long-term testaments to the wedding day, Bergmark cautions couples against choosing inexperienced, inexpensive photographers. “While a lower rate might look appealing at first, in the end you’ll want your wedding photos to reflect the technical skills only an experienced photographer has to capture those special moments accurately and beautifully,” she says.

ENTERTAINMENT: 6% Though a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ, Bergmark doesn’t think that should preclude live musicloving couples from booking musicians.

“It doesn’t have to be all or nothing,” she

says. Couples can mix and match. Perhaps a live band kicks off the night with one set before giving way to a DJ to close the evening.

RENTALS: 20% When it comes to rentals, particularly at a venue that requires various extras, Bergmark suggests creating a priority list.

“Know your deal-breaker items, but also have realistic expectations of items you would be okay not having in order to adhere to the budget,” she says.

FLOWERS: 12% Given the prevalence of outdoor weddings on the West Coast, Bergmark says couples can utilize their surroundings to stretch the budget. “Less is sometimes more,” she says. To save, Bergmark recommends providing the florist creative freedom to make alternative suggestions, as many pros can share thoughts on cost-effective alternatives or ways to repurpose flowers throughout the wedding day. Garlands, for example, can easily transition from the ceremony to reception decor.  29

“Once you’ve done all that, you’ll be right on track with those who’ve been at it for months,” says Paul.

HINT: Enlist the help of friends. Give them jobs they’ll feel comfortable doing, like managing the RSVP list. You’ll be glad you did.

BE FLEXIBLE AND CREATIVE

You may find that some of your first choices aren’t available. For example, many popular wedding locations are reserved a year in advance. So learn to be flexible; a fabulous venue could be a place you haven’t yet imagined. “Instead of the more obvious choices, perhaps a friend has a beautiful beach house, or you could get married in a local park,” says Paul. Open your mind to different dates and times as well. Sometimes it’s much easier to find and secure a place for a Friday or Sunday—or earlier in the day. The better able you are to come up with creative alternatives, the happier you’ll be with the end result.

ASK FOR HELP Event planners may be hired to do the entire wedding, or simply to handle a few tasks you can’t fit in or even just to manage things on the big day itself. Researching vendors to learn who’s right for the job is time consuming, and a good wedding planner with a network of reliable vendors can figure out the celebratory logistics quickly and easily.

PERFECT TIMING

A

lthough many couples take up to a year and a half to organize their weddings, other duos want to make it snappy. “There is always that call from a couple who would like to get married in a couple of months,” says event planner Julie Pryor of Pryor Events in Los Angeles.

There are plenty of reasons for having a wedding in a hurry—from a job change or military deployment to just plain eagerness to tie the knot. Here, some pros’ tips to ensure that, even with fast-andfurious planning, your wedding goes off without a hitch.

MAKE THE FIRST MONTH COUNT Wedding timelines usually start a year before the big day. So what’s a bride to do when she’s just six months out (or less)?

“First, set your budget and make all your major decisions and purchases,” recommends Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events in New York City. “That means booking your ceremony and reception sites, purchasing or ordering your gown and the bridesmaids’ dresses, hiring a photographer and deciding on the honeymoon.” You’ll also want to sit down with your partner 30 BRIDALGUIDE.COM March/April 2024

Remember to take time to soak it all in. Sure, you’ll be in a hurry, but tastetesting dishes and listening to bands is still fun. Luckily, you’re already on top of this. “Couples who’ve gotten their weddings together in six months or less have told me they actually enjoyed the process,” says Paul. “They had less time to stress out and found the preparations surprisingly exciting.” 

But will it cost more?

In many cases, you’ll receive the same treatment—and fees—as any other bride. In other words, giving shorter notice to vendors and other service providers doesn’t mean you’ll be getting a higher fee. And, says Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event in Chicago, “don’t assume you should refrain from negotiating prices just because you’re on a short timetable.

Negotiate whenever and wherever it seems reasonable.”

Although there shouldn’t be rush fees for booking your venue, your band, your florist or most other vendors, Lilly notes, “You can expect to pay extra for hurrying your and your bridesmaids’ gowns and maybe the invitations or favors.” So try to make quick, smart decisions. You really don’t have time to be fickle about the colors of your bridesmaids’ dresses or about whether to have roses or white orchids for your bouquet. Chances are, you won’t regret your choices—especially when you find you’ve eliminated costly “rush” fees.

A sense of family and place lay at the heart of this Colorado ranch wedding.

Having grown up on the same street and dated for five years, one could say that Will Johnson knew Victoria Krage very well. Well enough to pull off a surprise proposal, a metal “Will You Marry Me” sign he hung in the barn at Victoria’s family ranch, which she spotted while she was feeding the resident horses. Recently remodeled and set against a majestic backdrop of mountains, the pastoral Krage Ranch was without question a fitting venue for the celebration to come. “We had so much fun,” Victoria says. “Our memories are fabulous, and the vendor team was amazing.”

“The wedding took place on my parents’ ranch outside of Westcliff, Colorado,” Victoria says.

“Our wedding party was small. My sister was the maid of honor, and Will’s brother was his best man. My brother Garrett officiated.” The ceremony itself took place in an airy meadow with a single tree in the heart of the property.

“My dad drove me from our home to the ceremony in his vintage 1950s Ford,” Victoria tells us. “I was praying the brakes wouldn’t give out as I arrived.” (They made it!) A cloud of baby’s breath was fashioned into a ceremony arch, echoed in the wedding cake, a three-tiered almond confection covered in white fondant ribbon.

“My vision was to have a high-end feel that also celebrated the ranch,” Victoria says. Once the barn doors were thrown open for the reception, guests were greeted with a stunning palette of sharp black and white and soft woods. The color palette prevailed throughout, from tabletop and florals down to the black and white dance floor.

“There is a speakeasy in Dublin, called the Vintage Cocktail Club that I found to be one of the most romantic restaurants,” says Meghan. The candlelight and the ambience are enhanced by the intimate tables. “In Doolin, there is a pub called Gus O’Connor’s, where there is always live music and some great Irish food—the Guinness Stew is amazing! The environment is exactly what you would picture when you think of a traditional Irish Pub,” she adds.

Meghan and Joe booked their wedding at Dromoland Castle in February 2020, thus changes had to be made—all of which, it turns out, were enhancements to the magic of hosting a destination wedding in Ireland. One was the ceremony, which was planned to take place on the grounds of We are family.

Instead, guests were whisked away via bus to the epic Cliffs of Moher. “The Tower was covered in the most perfect dense Irish fog, to the point that the Cliffs were completely covered. As our ceremony progressed the fog had cleared to reveal the Cliffs,” recalls Meghan. Other tweaks included different musical acts (since bands were a no-go) and a troupe of Irish dancers. “The restrictions turned out to be the biggest blessing in disguise as those last-minute changes became the highlights of our wedding.” ➺

IN MEGHAN BEHEN’S FAMILY, Christmas is a time for travel. The tradition began in 2007 and one of their most memorable trips was to Ireland, a place that holds the name and history of the family. It was also the final vacation for Meghan’s little sister, Morgan, who passed away from a rare disease 10 months after their trip in 2016.

When she and Joe DeFever (whom she met within that year) became engaged, Meghan knew that she wanted to honor her sister in some way. “Picking the venue in Ireland was a very easy decision. When we visited in 2015, we stayed at Dromoland Castle and it truly just felt like home.

Those tastes, along with other marquee Jamaican offerings, were featured prominently in their wedding celebration. In addition to “lots of jerk chicken,” the seating cards were fashioned from Red Stripe bottles, the local beer, while the guest book was made of Bob Marley records. They also served a signature cocktail—the Select Spritz—and a cake made by a local baker, adorned with pressed flowers. ➺ The chuppah held the bride’s father’s tallit.

Any two people 18 or older can get married in Vermont and licenses ($80 and valid for 60 days) can be obtained from any town clerk in the state by providing your names, addresses, dates, and places of birth (and birth certificates as proof), as well as both of your parents’ names (including mothers’ maiden names) and places of birth. If widowed or divorced, you’ll need to provide documented proof. Vermont also allows almost anyone to become a temporary officiant for a $100 fee.
