Homestead Gardens was founded in 1973 by Don Riddle, Jr. Homestead Gardens landmark garden center and nursery is nestled among the rolling countryside of Davidsonville, Maryland and is the largest enclosed garden center in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Welcome to “Homestead for the Holidays” here at Homestead Gardens.

Homestead for the Holidays encompasses all the things we cherish about this season that we share with our families and friends. Over the years, we have proven to be rooted in tradition while embracing change and setting trends. Since we opened our first store in 1973, our founding commitment to be the garden destination for you, your family and friends, and generations to come, remains our core.

When you enter our stores, you will be greeted with life-sized snowmen who are helping us welcome in the season. We have over twenty-five theme trees with ornaments, lights, bows and decorations from around the world, created by artisans that will help transform your home into a world filled with the excitement of the holiday.

For over forty-five years, we have been the destination for families to create special memories when they come to see our model trains that run through tunnels and along hillsides. It brings great joy to the staff and to me to see the wide-eyed expression on the face of young and old as the engine passes along the track and gives its signature toot-toot and a puff of steam.

Another place of excitement is the outdoor Christmas Tree forest where families can choose the perfect tree. Big or small, fat or thin, you will find the one that’s just right for the special place your family needs. What makes selecting a tree more special is a fresh cup of cocoa and the smoky scent of a yule-log, all a part of the Homestead for the Holiday’s experience.

It’s no secret that Homestead Gardens has one of the finest holiday model train displays in the region and is one of our most cherished traditions. On display through December.

2018 will be Homestead Gardens' 6th year participating in the Trees for Troops program.

We are proud to say that through the support of our customers, last year we were able to donate 425 Christmas trees. This year our goal is 450 and with your help we think we can do even better. We’ve made it easier than ever to donate a tree by accepting donations in all of our stores, online, and over the phone.

This holiday season, you can help make a wish come true for a child living with a chronic medical condition.

Our commitment to inspire you begins the moment you walk through our doors. You will find it our effort to provide you expert advice, exceptional plant material, and state-of-art garden supplies. True to our founding mission, we have invested in the HG Garden Academy - an educational program to empower YOU, our inspired gardener! The lectures cover today’s relevant topics ranging from pollinators and edibles to patios and grilling. The acclaim of our educational program has already brought in well-known garden writers, regional authors, university professors, and industry celebrities such as Martha Stewart’s gardener, Ryan McCallister. Keep a keen eye on our calendar for announcements; We have quite a few surprises in store for you. We are as committed to growing gardeners as you are to growing your gardens.

LED Light Strands The hottest trend in holiday decorating is LED lighting. LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode”, and they produce light through the use of a semiconductor enclosed in an acrylic shell or lens rather than a traditional glass bulb and filament. That sounds complicated, but what that means is that LED lights consume 90% less electricity than miniature lights and about 500% less electricity than C7 and C9 lights. And while the average burn life of top-quality miniature lights, C7s and C9s is about 3,000 hours, the burn life of Seasons 4 LEDs average over 200,000 hours…essentially forever!

Oh Christmas Tree How lovely are your branches We pride ourselves on bringing you the best quality and selection in our Christmas Tree offering. From holiday classics like Douglas and Fraser Firs to unique varieties like Noble and Nordmann Firs… there’s something for everyone! Fraser Fir The Fraser Fir is known for its good form and needle retention. Fraser fir needles are dark green with blue undersides and have a pleasant scent. A

Poinsettia: The Quintessential Holiday Flower All poinsettias in our Premium Poinsettia Collection are locally grown right here in Davidsonville. This means fresh plants arrive daily to our retail greenhouses. In addition to traditional favorites in red and white our selection includes premium varieties like Red Glitter, Envy, Peppermint Ruffles, Tapestry and many more.

Poinsettia Care Poinsettias prefer a semi-cool and humid location with bright, indirect light. Cold drafts or a cold window can cause damage to their leaves.

Poinsettia plants should be watered thoroughly and the soil kept moist, but be sure not to let them sit in water-filled saucers, or they can suffer from root rot.
