DID YOU KNOW?

Each new introduction into this class of hydrangea exhibits better resistance to cold damage and improved ability to rebloom, allowing them to thrive in colder climates without winter protection. The Let’s Dance® series was developed in Michigan for excellent performance, hardiness, stem strength, and pure, rich flower colors.

Mountain hydrangeas are cousins to the bigleaf type, but because they are native to chilly mountainous areas of Japan, they naturally developed better tolerance to cold weather. The Tuff Stuff™ series is an outstanding choice for both cold and warm climates, as its ability to rebloom means months of colorful flowers.

Oakleaf hydrangea are native to the southeastern United States yet are cold hardy enough to grow as far north as Ontario, Canada. They provide four seasons of beauty, with fuzzy, oakshaped leaves in spring, large, showy flowers in summer, handsome burgundy fall color, and dramatic peeling bark in winter.

Known as the “black thumb hydrangea,” just about anyone can be successful with this tough, reliable shrub. Easy-to-grow panicle hydrangeas make beginners feel like rock stars, as they produce dozens of big, showy flowers on strong, sturdy stems every summer. They make excellent cut flowers, both fresh and dried.

Smooth hydrangeas are often called ‘Annabelle’ hydrangeas, after the old standby variety. However, it has been replaced by improved selections like Incrediball®, which does not flop over in bloom. More good news: there’s more to choose from than just white, as the Invincibelle® series includes green, pink, mauve, and ruby-red.

SUPPORTING Pollinators Inviting pollinators to your garden and observing their behavior is one of the most rewarding parts of being a gardener. Here are some tips to help you grow pollinator-friendly plants with maximum benefit to birds, butterflies, and bees.

PURPLE PILL AR rose of Sharon ®

LO & BEHOLD RUBY CHIP butterfly bush

®

HOST A BANQUET Spring is a busy garden center shopping time, so many gardens tend to favor plants that look great early in the season. Both you and the pollinators will find reward in expanding your garden to include plants that bloom in summer and beyond.

TAKE IT TO THE BANK When creating a pollinator garden, avoid planting just one of anything. It’s easier to create more naturalistic designs by grouping plants in odd numbers, plus creating banks of plants encourages uninterrupted foraging for pollinating insects.

A PL ACE IN THE SUN Prioritize planting sites that get at least six hours of sun. Plants in the sun will bloom more, their flowers will produce more nectar, and they’ll see far more pollinator activity than plants in the shade.

Ready to plant your own pollinator paradise? Ask a Homestead Gardens pro to show you plants that will support local pollinators from spring to fall, and get out and grow!

Less maintenance

Many perennials, especially natives, provide pollen, nectar, seeds and nesting material for birds, bees and butterflies.

Environmental sustainability

By planting native plants appropriate to your garden’s eco-region, you eliminate the need for heavy inputs like soil amendments, chemical feed and excessive watering. Flip to page 16 for some of our favorite perennials with ‘local roots’! Perennials are a longterm investment that reappear each year. Many perennials multiply or spread in the growing season, too, making them an investment with great returns! Perennials need much less maintenance than annuals. You can expect to spend less time and effort feeding, watering, and otherwise tending to them.

Pycnanthemum muticum

Cavano’s Perennials Inc. is a thriving wholesale to the nursery/greenhouse operation with 50+ employees, growing over 1,700 varieties of plants. Homestead Gardens trusts Cavano’s to grow many of the perennial selections we offer in our stores.

Hosta

While each Proven Winners plant is exceptional in its own way, only the very best can do so under national attention. The National Perennial of the Year® and National Hosta of the Year® programs seek to highlight a pair of perennials that represent the very best of the best. These plants were selected for their ease of care and far reaching excellence that can be enjoyed by many. The National Plant of the Year® program includes more than a perennial and a hosta each year. While each plant is chosen based on independent merit, their quality and versatility usually make them beautiful companion plants to each other. WATER, WAIT, & GIVE THEM SPACE! Summerific® Hibiscus have a history of growing in wet areas such as along riverbanks and around inland lakes. They perform best with consistent watering, particularly if they have been recently transplanted. If your Hibiscus is losing its lowest leaves, or aborting buds, you may need to up the aqua! This water tolerant characteristic makes them perfect for areas of the garden that periodically flood, or as a thriller in rain gardens. Another characteristic of the genus is they are late to break in spring. They’re not dead! Similar to Russian Sage, Butterfly Bushes, and other late-to-emerge

perennials, when they do wake up they’re off to the races. Depending on the year, Hibiscus may stay dormant through the end of May. Instead of tearing your Hibiscus out and starting over, try planting them with tulips, daffodils, or other spring blooming bulbs who will be out of bloom when Hibiscus are ready to emerge. Full sun is a must. In too much shade the otherwise sturdy habits strech and get floppy. Increased shade will also lead to a decrease in bud count and diminished flowering performance. UV light (full sun) is also necessary to bring out dark foliage colors.

PERENNIALS with Local Roots

North America is resplendent with native plants, with more beauty occurring just down than street than most homeowners realize. Proven Winners® Perennials includes a broad selection of plants with native roots. These are plants that may be single species hybrids, or crosses of multiple species that do not naturally interact in nature. The result of mixing species often brings the best of both worlds. That may be finding additional cold hardiness for a

tender perennial, or adding heat and drought tolerance to plants that will find themselves sandwiched in between hot concrete foundations and sidewalks. The goal of such hybrids is to preserve the beauty and benefits of the plant as they occur in nature and pair it with the superior performance necessary to thrive in the garden of today’s homeowner.
