BRIAN RAPHAEL NABORS
Blu(R)re(D) Lines Reflections on a Divided Republic for Percussion & Fixed Electronics
PROGRAM NOTE Blu(R)re(D) Lines (2026) was commissioned by percussionist Kathryn Irwin. In a political climate often reduced to binaries, Blu(R)re(D) Lines explores the increasingly blurred boundaries between ideologies that are frequently framed as oppositional. The title itself embeds the letters R and D—commonly associated with the American two-party system—within the word “blurred,” suggesting the instability and overlap that exist beneath these labels. The work draws on fragments of recorded speech—voices of past presidents, lawmakers, and news correspondents—interwoven with references to moments of national tension, particularly those shaped by racial conflict and division. These voices, once clear and authoritative, are gradually transformed: stretched, fragmented, reversed, and reassembled into layers of sound that move between coherence and abstraction. In doing so, the piece reflects the ways in which language—so often used to define, persuade, and divide—can lose clarity when removed from its original context, or when repeated without resolution. A rhythmic march serves as the structural foundation of the work, evoking order, direction, and collective movement. It is also symbolic of the two-party system itself, with its adamant chanting of “Left, right, left.” Yet as the piece unfolds, this sense of structure becomes increasingly unstable. The march fractures, voices overlap, and meaning dissolves into a complex sonic landscape in which distinctions are no longer easily drawn. Amid this fragmentation, moments of clarity emerge. Speeches that gesture toward unity, hope, and collective progress rise briefly to the surface— offering not resolution, but possibility. These moments do not erase the tensions that surround them; rather, they exist alongside them, suggesting that even within division, there remains the potential for a more nuanced and inclusive vision of national identity. Rather than presenting a singular argument, Blu(R)re(D) Lines invites listeners to sit within complexity—to hear the convergence of voices, histories, and perspectives that resist simple categorization—and to consider what it might mean to move beyond fixed boundaries toward a more expansive understanding of community. -Brian Raphael Nabors (2026) Instrumentation: Wood Blocks, Bongos, Snare Drum, Hi-hat, Vibraphone (mallets + bows) & Glockenspiel
