The Illusion of Separateness is a collaborative journey between Jordan Ryder and Brian Mark; a new work for choreographed dance, violin, loop station and delay processing pedals that explore the concept of “social distancing” that we have all had to face since March of 2020. This work was derived from spatial confinement to explore new ways of contact without touch, creating the illusion of connection and separation at the same time. The Illusion of Separateness depicts the universal feeling of isolation, loneliness, and being distant in empty large spaces, whilst at the same time the sounds of the different type of feedback loops will break down that illusion to emphasize that although we were not able to physically be within close proximity with one another during the onset of the pandemic, we were unified by this experience and found a semblance of community in a new way. The Illusion of Separateness was premiered at the Old Stone House of Brooklyn on October, 17, 2021.
