“What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?”

– Lin Yutang, Chinese writer and inventor As Maltese we’re known for our fierce sense of patriotism and love of our little rock – and why not? It’s survived against all the odds to become a beautiful, dynamic and increasingly cosmopolitan place to live. As foreigners so often tell us, there’s nowhere on earth quite like the Maltese Islands.

With that in mind, there’s a strong sense of patriotism running through Style this issue. Across our home pages, for instance, we’re celebrating how traditional Maltese tiles can provide inspiration for the current geometrics trend. The beautiful results are found on page 73. Plus there’s our ‘Making Us Proud’ feature, in which we meet three Maltese who’ve gone overseas to forge very successful careers across the industries of nutrition, acting and architecture. They each talk us through their paths, passions and aspirations on page 43.

And, speaking of making us proud, this issue’s cover interviewee is one of Malta’s biggest stars. Ira Losco tells us about her new musical directions, future plans and singular style ethos on page 9.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Ira Losco returns with a brand new album later this year. Known for her rock-chick vibe and sensational vocals, her regular reinvention has kept fans guessing for over a decade. Here she tells Jo Caruana about her new, grown-up style and why it will always be ‘all about the music’.

“I love to look classy and strong, but I also love fun, frivolous pieces too.”

“The release of my fourth studio album later this year signifies another step forward for me – and I continue to evolve in my style and approach with each one. I’ve been in the music industry for over ten years now, and I think it’s only natural and normal to change as you go along.

“I’d say that it is my outlook that has changed most of all – I don’t condition myself or try to please other people but rather work to fulfil my own creative desire. I think I’ve come to believe in myself more the older I’ve gotten.

“Before I started writing this album I took a two-and-a-half year break. My creative juices weren’t really flowing back then and it made sense to take stock and find my inspiration once again. I’d been on a really fast train for around six years and it was exhausting.

The more I gave, the more people expected. So I took the decision to slow down for a while and wait for the right moment to kickstart again.

“That said, I don’t think I ever felt like stopping completely – I’m

terrified by the idea of not writing or performing again. I just needed to clear my head and to have something to write about.

Suddenly it became exciting again and I was thrilled to find a new sound and musical direction.

“My music has never been about hidden agendas – I’m an open book and what you see is what you get. If I’ve had a personal experience of some kind, then the rest of the island will probably know all about it before I’m even fully aware of what’s going on!

So my music isn’t my platform for that sort of thing – it’s more about hopes, dreams and other everyday feelings. I have my dark moments, of course, but I’m not trying to be dark; I’m just expressing myself through my music and, fortunately, people seem to relate.

“Nevertheless, I do hope my work can change something in certain people – I want it to give them the courage to speak up. I like to think that some people need someone to be their voice and that that’s my part to play. I feel very strongly about certain issues, such as animal rights and human rights. I don’t think it’s acceptable to stay ignorant and to act selfishly towards others and their needs in this day and age. Respect and tolerance are key factors of a balanced equilibrium with nature and the ones around us.

“Music became my method of self-expression pretty early on. I remember composing when I was little and I starting putting poems to music when I was 11. Merging my passions – music and writing – felt good. My first full experience of writing an album came when I was 21 and I released Someone Else.

“Today there’s still a rock element to my music but there are more aspects too, such as folk, soul, reggae and a mix of electronic sounds all put together. One can comfortably classify all that mesh as pop.

For me it’s always been all about the vocals, and this coming album uses my voice more than ever. I want it to sound the absolute best that it can and am throwing my heart and soul into it.

“People think it’s easy to sing pop music but it’s not. I take care of my voice and train it regularly, especially before a performance or a series of studio sessions. It wouldn’t make sense not to – like running a race without warming up.

“Music isn’t an easy industry to be in today and it’s very hard work.

The whole sector is globalised and that’s great in many ways but the competition is that much harder. My latest single, What I’d Give, has already been released globally on iTunes and other digital portals around the world. International reaction has been very positive, so it’s exciting.

“These days it isn’t just about talent but charisma too; the pool is bigger and it’s a bit of a lottery as to who makes it and who doesn’t.

I have been very happy with my success and never felt held back because I chose to be based in Malta. Travelling abroad to perform is thrilling, of course, especially as it is refreshing to work with professionals who are constantly immersed in the music industry.

“That said I love performing on home turf and audiences really do appreciate music here today. I’ve always said that Malta’s only set

back is its size, because there’s certainly no shortage of talent. I do think music needs to be taken more seriously though and children need to be made aware of it from a young age. Music should be about maturing, inspiring people and discovering yourself – it’s not just about fame and fortune.

“Of course your look and attitude are important when you’re an artist, but they’re not the be-all and end-all. I am conscious of the way I come across though, and often watch my appearances to critique myself and improve.

“But I’m not paranoid about what people think anymore – I believe success comes from sticking to what you believe in and working hard. Plus, I genuinely like people and am always happy to interact with anyone who has taken an interest in what I do. I’m the sort of person who chats away to anyone on bus stops or in coffee shops,

and I always have been. Of course I take on a different persona when I’m on stage.

Everything is amplified and a reflection of the entertainment world.

“I think I have cemented my look in recent years – I’m not a trendsetter but I know what I like. You’re not likely to see me in a dress on stage because I don’t always feel comfortable in one, but I do like to try new things. In many ways I am creating a brand through everything that I do and a signature look helps to secure that. I love to look classy and strong, but I love fun, frivolous and customised items too – it’s often about the mood I’m in.

“The music world may look wonderfully glamorous from the outside, but it’s not always the case. Sure, in the major events where you have a lot of people working backstage, you would want your own space to focus and I guess it’s fair to say that most of the time we’re treated right. But

there’s also a lot of dirty work, rehearsals

and preparations before an event and much more before you release a record. Multiply that by 100 when the music is your own

and then feel an overwhelming weight of

responsibility on your shoulders the minute the record is done. I’m not complaining,

it’s totally normal, but behind the smiles

there’s a lot of thoughts going on triggering off insecurities. In return one would aspire to some self gratification, fame or even fortune.

“But it’s not why I do it – I’m just as happy doing my own hair and make-up as I am

having them done for me. Aesthetics come into it, but it’s the music that drives me

and it always will. I never underestimate

the value of working in this industry and I appreciate every success and

opportunity.”

IRA’s StylE Notebook My favourite designers are Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Galliano. I love that kind of punk, theatrical look. Sure, classical elegance is beautiful, but I like it when my clothes are that little bit different.

London’s Camden Market is my favourite shopping destination. I love spending hours rifling through what’s on offer – you can find some fabulous bargains that really add that something special to an outfit. I enjoy mixing vintage with new and wish I had more time to dedicate to finding key pieces.

My stylist handles most of my outfits – which takes the stress out of finding the right clothes but has also made me a bit of a lazy shopper! I’m not the sort of girl who can shop till she drops, but I like to buy good quality, statement pieces. I’m happy to wear something again and again, and like discovering ways to make it look different.

In the past my style icon was Gwen Stefani, especially when she was collaborating with Galliano. She looked so 1940s with her blonde finger-waved hair and red lips. These days I’d say my ‘icons’ are comfort and statement-making. It’s useless looking great if you’re not comfortable enough to give your all on stage, so that has become my key focus.

When I’m not concentrating on work I love to draw – though I don’t have much time for it! Art and writing have become very important to me as they give me time to focus. I find that I need time to myself – to read a book or go for a walk. It’s normal to have to act a certain way when you’re with people, so I love being whoever I want to be when I’m alone.

Taormina is my favourite place in the world. The food is an obvious draw – I can be a huge eater when I want to! – but it’s also so beautiful. Performing in Byron Bay with Tribali was another highlight and the whole area inspired me. I travelled there at a time when I was reinventing myself and building myself up from some changes, so it was special. It’s such a happy place and was just what I needed.

I definitely can’t live without music – it’s a huge part of every single day for me. I listen to all sorts of stuff – one day it’s the Clash, the next Beethoven (on my dark days!) or the Beatles. You make your own soundtrack as you go along, and music is certainly there to support you whatever you’re feeling.

People may not know this about me but I’m actually very sensitive. I’ll instantly cry about quite a lot of things and I have quite a dark side to my personality.

As a result I’m drawn to alternative styles of art and cinema, such as installation art and Japanese Butoh theatre. I think some people are afraid to think and feel certain things but it’s so important to express who you really are.

Gaby Zahra is married to well-known businessman Winston J Zahra. Together they have three children aged 9, 14 and 17. While she enjoys playing a role in business life and has, for many years, worked alongside her father in property development, design and letting, Gaby devotes most of her time to her family, with hobbies including gardening and baking.

I met Winston through my brother and friends.

It wasn’t exactly love at first sight – we were friends first and our relationship developed over time. We married two-and-a-half years later, and our oldest daughter was born just over a year after that.

Of course I am very aware of what Winston does and his role in business but that aspect of his life doesn’t really feature – at home he’s just

‘daddy’. He’s very good at switching off and leaving his work at work. I do like to be part of it and enjoy giving my opinions, but although most of my life has been intrinsically connected to the tourism industry, I would rather not be directly involved in the hotel business.

Winston and I are actually completely different!

We’re the same in that we share the same morals and family values and are happiest at

home with extended family and close friends, especially now with the kids and their friends too, but as such it stops there. He’s organised, I used to be. He does things instantly, I procrastinate. His attention to detail is immense, I let things pass. He’s on the ball, I’m more relaxed. Sometimes that complements, but at other times it’s frustrating. Overall, though, it works.

I feel lucky enough to have met some incredible people through Winston’s association with both Radisson and the Young Presidents’ Organisation. Attending the Nobel Concerts in Norway and especially YPO Events, stick in my mind, as being in the presence of such incredible people was awe-inspiring. I’d definitely consider those a highlight.

On the flip side, I guess time has been sacrificed – especially private and quiet time when we can just ‘be’, but I completely understand that it goes with the territory. Any time we do have is enjoyed with the children and extended family, at home, in Gozo or at sea. Picnics with friends, muddy walks in Chadwick Lakes after a storm or playing a game of table tennis at home bring us back to our core and remind us of the more important things in life. We love the simple things and people might not expect that. We grow a lot of our own vegetables and fruit and love to spend

time in the garden and then figuring out how to best put the produce to good use – we make oil, ketchup, sauces, preserves and more.

One thing you might not know about Winston?

He really, genuinely cares about people – and especially the people he works with. He’s not putting on a front and likes things to be done properly and in the right way. He’s very genuine. His best mode of relaxation? A good ski, both on water and snow, although not frequently enough unfortunately.

Gerard Winstanley is married to Malta’s US Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley.

Together they have travelled the world as part of Gina’s diplomatic career. They have two teenage children.

I have done a wide variety of work, from supervising manufacturing in the motor industry to designing farming equipment in Sri Lanka and running an international committee for the development of electrical standards.

After university, I volunteered in Sri Lanka as an agricultural engineer and later worked on a project in Oman, which is where I met my wife.

Once Gina became a diplomat and we travelled abroad, I worked in international development, economic analysis, engineering and management. I once even ran the Voice of America office in Cairo. Being flexible has been

essential to my professional development and fulfilment. And when I’m not at work? I enjoy building and remodelling, working with my hands and running.

Being married to Gina has shaped my life in that it has exposed me to so many different cultures and societies, and has added adventure to our lives. I’ve ran the city streets of Washington and Malta, and run my first marathon between the pyramids of Giza and Sakkarra in Egypt. Not many can say that!

You do also get to meet some important world leaders as a diplomat; sometimes you are lucky enough to meet them earlier in their careers.

In Indonesia we got to know a small, jovial, partially blind cleric who headed a Muslim welfare organisation. While his organisation did important grassroots work for the poor, our friendship was moulded by his humour and love of music. Ten years later our friend, Abdurrahman Wahid, became the first civilian elected president of Indonesia and set a liberal agenda that helped unify the country.

Yes, there are sacrifices – you have to give up something you have come to treasure every time you leave a country; however a new home for you to explore and get to know awaits. The sacrifices are leaving good friends behind and not being able to share your new adventures with them. Professionally we decided that

Gina’s career would have priority and I would seek employment wherever she was assigned.

Often I had to leave jobs that I was enjoying and start again elsewhere. The advantage for me was that I finished up with a much broader work experience and worked with amazing people from widely different cultures.

Gina and I have some different passions: I enjoy being outdoors, running, hiking and biking; she loves jazz and gospel music, and has a passion for old movies and TV shows from her childhood. She really loves my skills with building and remodelling, though. The returns on the wall-to-wall cedar closet I built for her nearly 10 years ago continue to this day.

I’m also the chef of the family and Gina was the assistant for dinners. The time we spent reviewing our day, strategising about handling the kids, getting the meal on the table while appreciating a good red wine was relaxing.

I know it’s near heresy to say in Malta, but the best evenings were those when we dined without the kids.

We also love Malta very much and enjoy the rich cultural offerings of the island; we’re often out and about exploring. We do have to make sure we have one or two nights in to relax and recharge. In the States our challenge was juggling work, family and volunteer activities.

We tried to make it a family affair and were very proud of our teens’ efforts over the years.

From a young age our kids pitched in to help make meals for the homeless, repaint our local school and deliver packages for underprivileged families in the city. Community service is very important in our family.

It is a great honour to serve as Ambassador for your country and I am delighted to do whatever I can to assist my wife in fulfilling her duties and obligations. We are so grateful to the Maltese people for the warm welcome they

have provided; you have really made us feel at home here.

Finally a little secret about Gina? She is a serious Star Trek fan. Anyone visiting her office should look for her miniature Uhura figure.

Jeannine Giglio is a financial services lawyer and married to admired criminal lawyer Joe Giglio. Together they have four children aged between 7 and 15.

Along with two partners I run my own law firm in Valletta, so I know all about the highs and lows of the industry. It definitely gives us a mutual understanding and respect of the other’s work. Of course I did take time off to have our children and only went back to work full-time when our twins turned four. It’s hard to juggle everything, but Joe and I plan things together to try to find the best solution to everything.

My husband and I met at the August Moon Ball and it was love at first sight. We got married in May 1996. At no point within that time have I thought of him as ‘high-profile’.

He’s high-profile to me of course, but it stops there. I don’t pay much attention to how he is perceived outside our home.

Joe rarely brings work home with him – he’s all ours once he walks through the front door, unless there’s been an emergency that is. Although we’re both lawyers, our work is completely different – his cases are more fun! I love hearing about them, as well as listening while he recites his case speeches. It’s fascinating.

We definitely support each other in everything we do; Joe is my rock. Even though he is so incredibly busy, I know he is always there for me and the children. I guess the only sacrifice has been time for ourselves as there just isn’t any – it’s all dedicated to work or our family – but it doesn’t really bother us. We’re a very

close family and just love doing things with the children, like going to Gozo for long walks.

The highlights? I’d have to say everything, as we’re so lucky to find highlights in our relationship every day.

As for his hidden talents, that would be football – he was very good at it and used to play semiprofessionally when he was younger. He still loves the sport now and supports Juventus all the way – and we have to follow suit!

Deirdre Farrugia is married to marathon runner and Inspire chief executive Nathan, and they have two daughters; Robyn, 8 and Keira, 6. They share a huge passion for sport.

It was sport that brought us together in the first place, so I suppose it is no surprise that it is while out running together that Nathan and I have the opportunity to catch up and chat.

Having said that, we do try to make the time to get dressed up and enjoy date nights from time to time. We’re actually going to New York this month, just the two of us, to celebrate my big 4-0, and once we’re there, we’re going to run the New York marathon.

Being married to someone who is so dedicated to sport can be hard at times, so it is very fortunate that I am so into it myself. Sport was my life for over 20 years, and as an athlete I participated in eight small nations games, four athletic world championships and the Olympics. Even though I recently retired I still coach and offer personal training.

The most stressful times for the family are when Nathan is training for a big event, as it can be very time consuming. When he did the ‘27 marathons, 27 days, 27 countries’ he was away for a month and the build-up was quite difficult for all of us.

The most harrowing time, however, was definitely when he ran the Marathon des Sables

– a 250km race in the Sahara desert – around two years ago.

At one point I lost contact with him and already had him dead and buried in my mind. I have never been so worried in my life. Having said that, I know my husband: he will always persevere, which is worrying in itself. Despite everything we manage, and as an athlete I’d like to think I can be more understanding and supportive.

A highlight of all our years together would definitely be the camping holiday in Sicily for our tenth wedding anniversary.

I would also mention paragliding with the kids in France this

Although our children are not all that interested in athletics, they are lucky to have good athletic physiques. What Nathan and I both wish for them is that they grow into their own person.

Something about my husband people probably don’t know?

Well I think I’d say just how messy he is, as well as what a spiritual person. Ultimately I can say I’m very proud of him.

Daron Galea has been in a relationship with dance director and performer Felix Busuttil for over 16 years. Although dancing and the theatre are in their blood, Daron admits that they are as different as salt and pepper.

Although we share a love for dance, music and theatre, Felix and I have very different characters, we’re just like night and day! Nevertheless I think we work very well together.

I guess it’s because we both have a strong sense of responsibility and we learn a great deal from each other. There are other disparities too, for instance while Felix loves the limelight and his fans, I tend to be more private. God forbid

STYLE In-DEPtH we lived in Los Angeles!

I must admit that it is not always easy working so closely together, and I do occasionally need a couple of hours by myself. Never longer than that however, because we do genuinely love being in each other’s company.

I have always been into dance – in fact I started dance classes aged six, when my mother became aware of my sense of rhythm. She would take me with her to keep-fit classes, and from my stroller I would move in time to the music. I have never stopped dancing since, except for six weeks following a motorbike injury. I kept studying until I graduated from the College of Dance and started teaching.

At the moment we are very excited about our upcoming show in San Francisco in January, following which we should be performing in a variety of US cities over the next five years.

Because we are so similar, Felix’s lifestyle did not really impact mine, which I think is why we clicked so much in the first place. We’ve been together for 16 wonderful years and I love him dearly.

Felix and I share a love for travel and try to go abroad as many times a year as we can. We also love the theatre, both West End and Broadway, and concerts. In fact we’ve seen Bette Midler, Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion and Madonna in concert together, to mention just a few. TV is another of our shared passions, and on the rare occasion of a day off you might find us lazing around in front of the box all day.

A secret about Felix? Hmmm... well I recall that when we first met he’d get into the car and I would notice him pencilling in his eyebrows. It’s because he has a small white patch on his eyebrows that he simply hates.

JOHN BRIFFA Mdina is my favourite place in Malta – I think it is the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited. I love the architecture, atmosphere and cake at Fontanella’s! It’s magical.

It may sound twee, but Republic Street is probably my favourite street in the whole world. I always make it a point to wander up and down it when I’m visiting. It’s got a fantastic buzz about it.

I love the Maltese humour too – it’s slightly self-effacing and very dry. I find it to be a very attractive quality.

When it comes to my career, I don’t think I could live without the internet. I remember that, when I started, I would type an article out and have to go to the newsagent’s to fax it! Now everything is so much simpler, and I can work wherever I am in the world.

When I look back on what inspired my career, I recall being bowled over by a book called Nutrition and Evolution by Michael Crawford. I think reading it was the first time I ever stopped to think about the role of nutrition in the way our species has evolved. It helped me to form new ways of thinking about food.

“Both my parents are Maltese, from Mosta and Valletta, so I am extremely proud of my Maltese heritage. While I’m definitely British, my Maltese traits are never far from the surface. I only have good feelings about my island heritage.

“I found my path into nutrition when I was fresh out of medical school. I met an elderly patient who appeared much younger than he should have and he intrigued me. He took such a healthy approach by cycling everyday and growing his own vegetables.

As a junior doctor who had put on weight

while studying and kind of let myself go, it all suddenly made sense.

“It was at that point that I decided to change my lifestyle and be much healthier. I know it sounds obvious now, but 20 years ago it wasn’t. I saw a change in myself immediately and remember thinking how powerful this could be for others. It quickly became evident that this was what I was meant to do and I’ve never doubted it since.

“Having said that, it wasn’t always easy as there is no real career structure for what I do. I slowly built experience and confidence as I saw my advice work well, and I started writing for a magazine that had just launched called Men’s Health. As people related to what I wrote, I started to do it more and more, writing columns for the Daily Mail and, later, The Times. A book was

the next logical step and my thoughts have evolved through each one.

“My confidence in what I do comes from knowing it works; it’s not about selling copies but giving people the chance to take charge of their own health. I talk to them in a way they can understand and try to get to the crux of the matter. My commitment is to tell the truth and I think people respond well to that.

“And, when they find out, they also respond well to the fact that I’m Maltese; I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad reaction! I am so proud of that part of me and to be associated with such a welcoming and genuine population. Although I can’t really imagine living here, I always come over once or twice a year to reconnect with family and friends, and always love every minute of it.”

I used to live there when I was growing up and would love to again some day.

I’ve travelled quite a bit lately but I always come to the same conclusion: my favourite street in the world is easily St Barbara Bastions in Valletta.

I love the fact that so many Maltese wear their gold jewellery with pride! They’re proud of their belongings and leave nothing back home for people to steal. I think it’s a great idea and have actually started doing the same myself!

Many people’s stories go unnoticed in this world as we are so immersed in our own. Cinema is a selfless place; it makes you aware of other lives. I wanted to be a part of that.

Humans and the internet are both ‘things’ I don’t feel I could live without. They provide so much of the research fodder that’s greatly needed for the work that I do.

Marama stars in Sky 1’s popular drama, Sinbad

Marama Corlett is half-Maltese and halfNew Zealander, and one hundred per cent the rising star. She turns heads with her acting skills, and her enviable filmography and theatreography includes the The Devil’s Double alongside Dominic Cooper and The Children’s Hour with Keira Knightley. Now based in London, she is currently the leading lady in Sky’s primetime drama, Sinbad, and is filming Maleficent – the tale of the evil witch in Sleeping Beauty played by Angelina Jolie.

“I’ve done all sorts of stuff since moving to the UK – I’ve worked in a cinema and been a waitress, but I kind of fell into acting and never really imagined it would become my career.

“In fact, growing up, I had always been a dancer. I did do a couple of acting classes in Malta when I was in my teens but nothing too major; now I try to learn as much as I can on the job.

“In this career it’s an absolute must to have the willpower to think that if you want to

do something, you’ll do it. When I go into an audition I find that if I speak with my accent it’s hard for them to concentrate on what I’m trying to do. So I use an American accent that’s more generic. The second I say I’m from Malta people tend to get excited and just talk and talk! It is a great icebreaker though, as everyone seems to know the island in one way or another, and they often have great memories of it or its people.

“Personally, I love everything about Malta, especially the old women who sit in the streets chatting to one another – it evokes all sorts of memories of my childhood. Every now and then, my sister and I take some chairs outside and drink tea – it makes me feel so Maltese! In London you work to live and I miss the relaxing side to Malta. There’s a great social life here: you call someone up, arrange to meet and just go.

“I really believe that the Maltese are very talented people and they excel at anything they put their mind to. There aren’t a lot of

Maltese in the London film industry though and it’s definitely not an easy sector to be in.

I’m loving every moment of what I do, but it can be soul-destroying. I think it’s a very Maltese trait not to be afraid of hard work, and that keeps me going.

“Working on Maleficent, among wellknown faces, is quite a big, positive thing for me. I will be in Morocco filming Desert Dancer next, which stars Freida Pinto. It’s a true story about a young man following his dreams of becoming a dancer and is set in Iran with the 2009 election protests as its backdrop. It’s got an important message, so I’m very happy to be involved.

“In many ways I feel that I have come full circle. I recently attended a premiere at the cinema where I used to work as an usher.

I remember joking back then, and vowing to return as an actress in the future. It’s not all glamour and fun, but I’m certainly privileged and grateful to be doing what I’m doing.”

KONRAD XUEREB Valletta and Gozo are two of my favourite places in Malta. From an architectural point of view, I think Valletta is an incomparable gem. I try to explore new places every time I visit.

I love the Maltese spontaneity. When it comes to taking important decisions I think we are proud to just go for the opportunity – and that’s great.

Research is so important in my career and I am constantly reading to stay abreast of the latest issues. I am also currently working on a PhD in Smart Structures at University College London. I believe that you have to keep learning or else you start to stagnate.

My favourite street in the world would have to be King’s Road in Chelsea. I love the atmosphere and it’s great for coffee, shopping, art galleries and cultural spots.

The interior of St John’s Co-Cathedral never fails to inspire me. I find it absolutely awe-inspiring every time I visit.

Architect and civil engineer Konrad Xuereb has worked on award-winning and sustainable projects across the globe, including in the UK and Abu Dhabi, with leading firm Arup. He lives with his wife Greta Borg Carbott, a research fund manager, in London.

“Although I’ve lived abroad for 12 years I feel as though – emotionally – I never left Malta. I consider it to be part of my international path and career, and come here often to provide high-level advice on projects. The London-based company I work for is also involved in the City Gate project, so my ties are very tangible.

“I started my career reading architecture and civil engineering at the University of Malta, and worked here for two years before securing a scholarship to study a post-grad at the Institute of Technology in Milan.

It opened my eyes to what was out there, and I later got the opportunity to work with a prominent London firm. London was booming at the time, with lots of high profile developments being carried out, so it

was a wonderful time to be involved in the action.

“I have worked on some fantastic projects since, including the recent thirty-storey Adic Towers (now known as the Al-Bahr Towers) in the financial district of Abu Dhabi. These sustainable towers are clad with adaptable facades (Mashrabiya) that respond to the external environment conditions to allow optimum internal comfort levels for the occupants. It is completely automatic and the first of its kind for tall buildings. The towers were recently awarded the 2012 CTBUH Award for innovation.

“But I’ve been lucky enough to work on several other excellent international projects, including a cable net botanical museum in Oslo and the Skolokovo Technopark in Moscow, as well as the award-winning S-shaped Castleford Bridge in Yorkshire, England. I recently went back to experience how that bridge has helped regenerate the town; it was a pretty rewarding process.

It also won numerous awards, including the RIBA Award and ACE Engineering Excellence Award.

“Sustainability is definitely an important factor in my work. I emphasise on incorporating engineering with architecture to attain the best results in my projects. I strive to create sympathetic and intelligent solutions that benefit the built environment.

I look for inspiration in all sorts of places in the hope of creating buildings that will work optimally for the people using them.

“I also think that architecture in Malta is looking up, as several brilliant and interesting projects have been launched in the last five years or so. I believe the public is starting to appreciate the value of good architecture and the long-term benefits of investing in quality. I always find that foreigners are intrigued by the fact that I am Maltese, and they always want to know how the country is faring. This is an exciting time for Malta, and an exciting time to be Maltese.”

The BOSS Orange Men’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2012 draws its inspiration from the masculine side of the sea: turbulent tides, craggy coastlines, weathered longshoremen and dockworkers from days gone by – and the mammoth oil tankers that sail the world’s oceans.

Rough materials, sturdy leather boots and washed denims tell this story of masculine authenticity. A checked field jacket fashioned of thick wool, plaid shirts worn over turtleneck sweaters, and the used-look leather jacket with a lamb fur lining all recall the style of a dockyard worker.

Chinos and cargo pants are tucked into boots and, along with a bulky-knit hooded cardigan and extra-long scarf, shield against the biting coastal winds.

Material mixes are big. Chunky cardigans pair with blazers and trench coats; a plaid shirt sports a knit collar. The warm down vest layers over a plaid wool jacket to keep out the cold. Vests play an important role throughout, and combine with chinos and biker boots for dress-down days. The BOSS Orange take on the pinstripe suit calls for a typical twist: rustic leather boots and a matching belt.

The palette is keyed to black, grey, tobacco brown and grey heather. Accents come in sapphire blue, red and statement orange.

BOSS Orange Womenswear for Autumn/Winter 2012 draws its inspiration from the rich traditions of folklore. Populist 19th century trends from the fields of fashion, literature, music and dance were interpreted afresh and translated into an urban, contemporary collection.

Striking patterns such as a blurred check or a romantic floral print resurface throughout the looks.

Hazy stripes in warm earth tones are printed on knit fabrics and integrated in a silk dress and in leggings and blouses.

Strong statements tell the collection story, including an ethno-look stole and coat. The focus is more on volume than structure. Cascading fabrics with a fluid drape express femininity; the material mix gains a new relevance.

Style on Sunday test drives the all new Toyota GT86

Toyota is renowned for producing good value cars that are fuel efficient, environmentally friendly and reliable. But a glance back at the history of this gigantic brand reveals that Toyota has also developed maverick sports cars over the years. The first attempt was made in 1962 with the Toyota Sports 800 but, perhaps, one of the most iconic sports cars created by the Japanese giant was the 2000GT released in 1965.

Clearly, Toyota has now made a return to producing a true sports car with its newly

launched GT86. Once you take the driving seat, place the key (actually it’s not a key but a remote control, which you can place anywhere in the car or leave in your pocket) and push the start button, you will realise that the GT86 is the real thing. All the elements that shape and make the GT86 clearly point to the fact that Toyota wanted – and succeeded – to create an iconic sports car. One of its most striking features is the roar that the engine makes with such distinction. For sports car lovers, there could

As the accelerator is challenged downwards the roar intensifies, as does the feeling that you are being engulfed by the sporty seat. The GT86 also impresses with its acceleration. The 2.0ltr boxer engine, which produces 200BHP, accelerates remarkably and the road holding is so good that it makes you wonder whether the car is actually stitched to the ground. So, the seating, the steering, the roar of the engine, the acceleration and certainly the road holding capability are all clear indicators that Toyota managed to produce a classical sports car.

But what’s more intriguing is the fact that Toyota also succeeded in combining other features – that are traditionally lacking in sports cars – to make the GT86 a strong contender for those after a sports car that can

also double up as an everyday car: first of all you don’t feel the bumps like you do in most cars within its category; the level of space and comfort is over and above what you expect in a classic sports car; it features back seats (they cannot entertain six-footers or heavyweights, but can be used if really needed); and the trim level and specs in the cars are outstanding while the engine is not massive – it’s a 2.0ltr that delivers what is required from a sports car but is relatively economical and environmentally friendly.

Finally our attention turns to the price. At €35,995, we believe that Toyota has managed to produce, what could be judged by history in the future, an authentic and iconic sports car at a very fair and realistic price.

Worth a test drive… and if you do, Style offers one piece of advice: don’t put the music on, just enjoy the roar.

Pippa Toledo is renowned as an interior designer who has created her own fashion, jewellery and accessory line.

She is also known for her effortless sense of style.

I believe that simplicity is beautiful. I usually start with a simple outfit and accessorise it with statement pieces.

I love black and wear it a lot, especially at the office, but I do love splashes of colour when I’m off to a party.

My work style is plain but comfortable.

It’s important that my outfits reflect who I am, but they have to be practical too. I also believe that grooming is very important – I always have my hair, makeup and nails done.

In the evening I like my clothes to be cut nicely and made from lovely fabric, and I then accessorise with jewellery that I make myself or buy on my travels. The right bangles, handbag or necklace can transform an outfit in so many ways.

I definitely couldn’t live without rings and I feel very bare without them. I have one that I haven’t taken off for years! I like bangles too, and combine shapes to create something unusual. The same goes for perfume – I usually mix four or five together to create a scent I really love.

I adore high street shopping and introducing key pieces. Zara is my favourite, and I usually match a pair of their well-cut trousers with a designer jumper.

I’m quite a fashion addict and it permeates through so much of my life. I pour through magazines and look for ideas on fashion channels. In fact, I would love to go back to school to study fashion – I absolutely love it.

Cavalli is my preferred designer – he is so innovative and everything he makes looks good.

I love that his look is shabby chic; it’s so creative.

Shoes are important too, and they have to be comfortable. I often start planning an outfit from the shoes up and work backwards – or perhaps work around a bag or necklace. It’s in my character to think outside the box.

Milan is my favourite shopping destination, although Rome is fun too. I love exploring all the fashion houses and feeling immersed in the industry.

The Prada-obsessed fashion blogger Daniel Azzopardi runs his blog devilwearspraduh.com and is an avid collector of fashion items.

My fashion ethos is that it’s all about self-expression. I describe my look as Milanese quirky with a bit of London eccentricity. I’m the guy who wears the pieces in a collection that no else wants to wear. More is more – that’s my look.

Yes, designer, and Prada specifically, is all about craftsmanship, quality and a garment’s story, but in truth I am just attracted to items that make me dream. Prada is one of those brands that gets it right every time – the ‘ugly beauty’ aesthetic and the aura of luxury leave me wanting more. And the shoes... oh boy the shoes...

Of course I do have other favourite designers: Marni, Givenchy, Balenciaga and Proenza Schouler. And I scour the high street for items to match with them – I love Zara and H&M. My favourite item is my rhinestoned Prada golf shoes from spring/summer 2012. There’s nothing quite like them.

Or flashier for that matter. I do love a shoe that raises an eyebrow.

“The streets are like one big lookbook and I get my inspiration from people watching.”

I’m drawn to classic, vintage-styled clothing but there isn’t really one style I stick to – it constantly evolves and I find new ways to wear things.

Accessories are definitely my weakness – you can never have enough scarves, earrings or bags.

I’m hopelessly nostalgic and love anything with a history. I’ve always loved old things and seek them out – I’m drawn to fabric, textures and patterns, especially when I know they have a story.

My style icons are Chloë Stevens Sevigny and the Olsen twins.

Charity shop and boutique treasures were my gold when I lived in London. Here you have to look a little harder for vintage, so I usually mix them with great high street classics from Zara. That helps me to get the mix right so I don’t overdo it – I go for basic clothing with vintage accessories, or vice-versa.

My favourite item would have to be my Diane von Furstenberg sequined and beaded couture blazer, which I found in a boutique garage sale in Naples.

The streets are like one big look-book and I get my inspiration from people watching. If I see someone wearing something I like, I start building on it for my own ideas.

LAMB ROGAN JOSH 6 garlic cloves (roughly chopped), 1 large onion (roughly chopped), thumb-size piece fresh ginger (peeled and roughly chopped), 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 2 tsp ground cumin, 2 tsp ground coriander, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp tomato purée, 4 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee (clarified butter), 1kg casserole lamb (cut into bite-size cubes), 8-10 cardamom pods (lightly crushed with the back of a spoon) Method: In a food processor, blend the garlic, onion, ginger, all of the ground spices, salt and tomato purée. Heat the oil or ghee in a large saucepan or flameproof casserole and add the lamb pieces and cardamom pods. Quickly fry until the lamb is browned all over. This may need to be done in 2 batches, depending on the size of your pan. Stir in the spicy paste and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Cover with a lid and cook for about 1-1¼ hours, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the lamb is lovely and tender. Leave the dish to sit for five minutes before serving.

Serve with rice and naan bread.

SPICY INDIAN CHICKEN WINGS

VEGETABLE SAMOSAS

For the pastry: 1 cup all purpose flour (Maida), water to knead the dough, a pinch of salt For the filling: 3-4 potatoes (boiled, peeled and mashed), ½ cup green peas (boiled), 1-2 green chillies (finely chopped), ½ tsp ginger (crushed), 1 tbsp coriander (finely chopped), chopped cashews and raisins (optional), ½ tsp garam masala, chilli powder (to taste), ½ tsp dry Amchur mango powder (optional) 2 tbsp oil, a pinch of salt Method: To make pastry, combine all the dry ingredients, adding the water a little at a time. Knead it into a soft, pliable dough. Cover with a moist muslin cloth and keep aside for 15 minutes. To make the filling, combine the mashed potatoes with the salt, chilli powder, mango powder, garam masala, chillies and ginger, and mix well.

Add the peas, cashews and raisins, and mix again, followed by the coriander. Then, roll the dough into small circles (between 4 and 5 inches in diameter) and cut it into two to form a semi-circle. Take one semi-circle and fold it into a cone shape – using the water to moisten it as you go. Place a spoonful of the mixture into the cone and seal the third side with a drop of water. Heat the oil in a pan and deep fry until golden brown. Serve with chutney.

500g chicken wings, 1 garlic clove (chopped), 15g fresh ginger (peeled and chopped), 2 red chillies (deseeded and chopped), 2 tbsp natural yoghurt, 3tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground cardamom, ½ tsp ground cloves, 1 tsp sea salt Method: You can shape your chicken wings into ‘lollipops’ if you like, or just retain their natural shape and add plenty of great Indian flavour.

Mince the garlic, chillies and ginger into a paste. Beat in the yoghurt, oil and three tablespoons of water to create a smooth mixture. Then mix in the dried spices and salt. Place the chicken wings in the bowl and rub with the marinade until every piece is coated. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight. Or if making them last minute, an hour or two will suffice.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place the chicken on a baking tray and spoon over some of the remaining marinade.

Cook for 25-30 minutes, allowing for the marinade to dry up and stick to the chicken. Serve piping hot.

CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA

BEEF MADRAS 1 kg stewing beef, 2 onions (chopped), 1 tbsp ginger, 1 tbsp garlic, 460g crushed tomatoes, 2 tbsp tomato purée, 1 cup beef stock, ½ cup red lentils, 1 tsp ground turmeric, 2 red chilli peppers (chopped), 1 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tbsp oil or ghee, ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro Method: Fry the aromatics, spices, garlic, ginger and onions together. Add the beef and cook briefly on all sides. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the cilantro.

Bring to the boil in pressure cooker for two minutes on high and then on low for 20 minutes, until beef is cooked through and tender. Add chopped cilantro and stir through. If too wet add more tomato paste; if too dry add more beef stock.

1 cup yoghurt, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 4 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 2 tsp cayenne pepper, 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper, 1 tbsp minced fresh ginger, 7 tsp salt, 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into bite-size pieces), 4 long skewers, 1 tbsp butter, 1 clove garlic (minced), 2 tsp paprika, 1 can tomato sauce, 1 cup heavy cream, ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro Method: In a large bowl combine yoghurt, lemon juice, 2 tsp cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper, ginger and 4 tsp salt. Stir in the chicken, cover and refrigerate for one hour. Preheat a grill on a high heat. Lightly oil the grill grate.

Thread chicken onto skewers and discard the marinade. Grill until juices run clear (about five minutes on each side.) Melt the butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. Sauté the garlic for one minute. Season with 2 tsp cumin and paprika, and 3 tsp salt. Stir in tomato sauce and cream. Simmer on low heat until sauce thickens (about 20 minutes).

Add grilled chicken and simmer for 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with fresh cilantro.

HARYALI TIKKA TANDOORI

SEEKH KEBAB TANDOORI

500g chicken (boneless and cubed), 1 tsp ginger and garlic paste, salt to taste, small bunch of cilantro, 3 green chillies, 2 lemons, 2 tbsp plain yoghurt, 1 tbsp crushed coconut, cooking oil as required

500g lamb mince, 1 onion (chopped very fine), 1 tbsp garlic paste, 1 tbsp ginger paste, ½ cup fresh chopped cilantro, juice of ½ a lemon, 2 tbsp plain yoghurt, 1 tsp garam masala, 2-3 green chillies (finely chopped), salt to taste, cooking oil

Grind the green cilantro and green chillies with coconut. Add the salt, ginger and garlic paste, and yoghurt, and mix well. Marinade the chicken pieces with prepared seasoning and refrigerate for an hour. Heat the grill pan on a medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes and add 2 tbsp cooking oil. Spread the chicken pieces on the grill pan and fry. Turn the chicken pieces once or twice while cooking and sprinkle 1 tbsp cooking oil and lemon juice every time you turn. When chicken pieces are golden take them off the flame.

Garnish with lemon wedges and serve hot.

Place all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Use your hands to mix the ingredients thoroughly till they are well blended. Cover the bowl with cling film and refrigerate for one hour. Remove from fridge and divide the mix into equal portions. Take each portion and form it into a long sausage-like kebab while pressing on to a skewer. Do this till the mix has firmly adhered to the skewer. Put some oil on your hands to prevent meat from sticking to them. Do this till all the kebab mix is used up. Grill the kebabs until the meat is done, turning as often as required.
