For the artists behind Alchemy, Lander felt like a natural home from the very beginning. The town’s culture emphasizes support over competition, where local businesses and creatives genuinely uplift one another. That spirit has created an environment where both art and small businesses can thrive side by side.
One of the most meaningful aspects of operating in Lander is the community’s respect for handmade work. Residents understand the time, skill and heart that go into each piece, and they actively choose to support local artists in a way that feels intentional and personal. In Lander, art is not something separate or distant—it is woven into everyday life. For the members of Alchemy, being part of that interconnected creative ecosystem is both inspiring and deeply appreciated.

Alchemy Artists Co-Op was born from the vision of a small group of artists who wanted to create something sustainable and rooted in mutual support. They took the time to study artist cooperatives across the country, thoughtfully shaping Alchemy around the belief that artists are stronger when they work together. That founding principle remains central to the co-op’s identity today.
Rather than simply sharing a retail space, Alchemy’s members share ideas, responsibilities, encouragement, and a genuine appreciation for one another’s work. This collaborative culture extends beyond the artists themselves—it is strengthened by the support of the Lander community, which played an essential role in bringing the co-op to life and continues to be at the heart of everything it does.
A Truly Diverse Group of Artists
One of Alchemy’s most distinctive qualities is the diversity of its members. The artists come from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds, including teachers, scientists, speech pathologists, horticulturists, carpenters, ranchers, climbers, and more. They are parents, grandparents, longtime locals, and newer residents—some having lived in Lander for nearly 50 years, others for less than five.
This diversity is reflected in the artwork itself. The co-op is home to four painters, five jewelers, four potters, a stained glass artist, a carpenter, a photographer, and a textile artist. Together, they create a dynamic and ever-evolving collection that invites visitors to explore different styles, mediums, and perspectives. Alchemy has intentionally grown into more than a place to shop—it is a space where people bring family, share stories, and spend time simply enjoying art. A small group of Alchemy artists regularly plays ukulele music at the local senior center, creating moments of connection through music and shared experience. These interactions reflect the co-op’s belief that contributing to a community goes beyond business— it’s about fostering relationships and adding to the spirit that makes a place feel like home.
