Greensboro Fashion Week No. 5 Like all things created by humans, Greensboro Fashion Week started as an idea.

I first met Witneigh Davis

by Brian Clarey and Giovanni Ramadani in a coffeeshop in 2014, just as the weather was starting to soften. It was only a few months after we had put out the very first issue of Triad City Beat in February, and the three of us bonded with entrepreneurial zeal.

Their idea was a big one: an annual Fashion Week in the city, on par with similar operations in places like Charlotte, Miami and eve (gasp) Paris and New York City. And my first reaction was: Wow. Why has no one ever done this before?

It’s a natural in Greensboro, where for more than a century we manufactured textiles, the raw materials of the fashion industry, especially denim, which may be the most important fabric in American history.

They had big plans: sponsorships, an 80-foot runway, scores of models, stylists and designers. At that point, it was really just the two of them — a former model (Ramadani) and fashion junkie (Davis), leaning into the difficult task of building something huge, from the ground up.

I signed on immediately.

they learned and poured it into the next one. And the next one. And the next.

Last year, on Saturday night’s main event, we saw our biggest crowd yet. And still they pushed.

Greensboro Fashion Week has grown to include five nights of programming every fall, a spring preview show and a model camp for local kids who hope to one day be part of the show. This year we’re holding the main event in an airplane hangar at the airport, and we took on a new sponsor, Sprite, which chose just three fashion weeks in the United States this year.

I spent Tuesday evening at the meet and greet, saying hello to other staff veterans, meeting the models’ parents and nailing down details for the live events, which begin Thursday night at the Greensboro Children’s Museum. It’s going to be a long weekend, and we’re ready to meet it.

On the way home I considered the 5-year mark, a significant milestone for any business, and how privileged I have been to see this thing turn from a spark in their minds into a living, breathing thing.

And I understood how helping other people realize their dreams can be more satisfying than achieving our own.

Deadheads for Trump

by Brian Clarey You wouldn’t believe how many Deadheads I know on Facebook who are pro Trump and everything he stands for. I’m talking about anti-immigrant sentiments, a reverence for the patriarchy, a lot of that nasty racist stuff and “all lives matter” crap.

And it’s not just Baby Boomers — most of whom, you’d be wise to remember, were not at Woodstock.

A lot of the people that I used to go to Grateful Dad shows with in the 1980s and ’90s are Trumpers. And I am personally goddam offended by it.

Let me tell you why.

I have been to perhaps 20 Grateful Dead shows in the years between 1986 and ’94. Nassau Coliseum. Saratoga. Pittsburgh. Philly. UNO. Sold imports in the parking lot, ate grilled cheeses and bought hideous T-shirts. It was fun and it was wild and I enjoyed every minute of it, even when things got weird. Especially when things got weird.

Outsiders might think it strange that a lot of my values — beauty and compassion, mercy and love — are informed by the Dead, its music and the people who gathered around them. But it’s true. Deadheads were a gentle people, by and large, determinedly non-judgmental and respectful, sometimes even reverent, of their fellow humans.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, right?

Sure, the Grateful Dead was one of the most successful money-making enterprises of the last quarter of the 20th Century — they were an American band, after all — but aside from that, their philosophy is entirely incongruous with today’s right-wing politics.

Kindness. Generosity. Tolerance. Tie a retread to your feet and pray for better weather. What I want to know, is are you kind?

Obviously, they’re not listening to the words.

Also: The members of the band were outlaw drug users with criminal records who had no place for organized religion in their secular spirituality. In their lives as in their music they railed against bankers, corporations, the politicians throwing stones and everything else the hippies lumped together as “the establishment.”

And the sentiments of peace, love and justice are punchlines to today’s GOP.SO I say either they stop listening to the Dead’s music altogether, or they listen to nothing but the Dead, until the message seeps in.

The city attorney makes big bucks, but doesn’t have much job security The city attorney’s position in Greensboro has been a hot seat over the past 10 years, with a succession of counselors giving legal advice that may or may not go down well with the political majority on city council. The city attorney is one of two positions that city council hires directly, the other being the city manager. The city attorney carries a lot of responsibility, and is compensated accordingly: After City Manager David Parrish and Coliseum Director Matt Brown, Carruthers was the third most highly compensated employee of the city at $180,000.

2. Carruthers was a power player who alienated some council members Compared to many of his predecessors, Carruthers was far less deferential to the politics of his employers and demonstrated confidence in his opinions. Whether advising city council or a committee like human relations, it sometimes seemed as though Carruthers’ opinions boxed the governing boards into decisions that frustrated both voting members and community advocates. Recently, Carruthers led the charge on revising the city’s panhandling ordinance, first acknowledging that the previous ordinance was unconstitutional and then setting up a series of public forums to solicit concerns that would legally justify an antiharassment ordinance. A conservative minority on council, including Councilman Justin Outling, expressed displeasure, arguing the city should have fought the legal challenge. Notably, Outling is the only lawyer currently serving on council, and he was the member most willing to tangle with Carruthers. But Mike Barber, a previous member who is also a lawyer, was also known for giving city attorneys, including many of Carruthers’ predecessors a hard time.

3. They could have used him on Tuesday The timing of Carruther’s resignation was curious, or at least potentially fateful. His seat sat empty for the entirety of the city council meeting on Tuesday. During the speakers-fromthe-floor portion of the meeting, a local antiracist activist named Mitchell Fryer began to outline the outrageous and violent criminal history of an area Ku Klux Klan leader who is a federal informant (see story at triad-city-beat.com). One can imagine that if Carruthers had been at his post, he might have picked up on where Fryer’s remarks were going, and recommended that Mayor Nancy Vaughan cut the mic. Instead, Fryer named two Greensboro police officers as being the Klan leaders’ FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force handlers. Council members asked questions, and police Chief Wayne Scott responded, albeit stating that he was constrained from saying much “because of a security clearance related to the federal government.” At the end of the end of the meeting council went into closed session to discuss Carruthers’ resignation, and at then came out to publicly vote to accept it.

School construction Motsinger called for state investment in school construction, an idea the Republican-controlled General Assembly hasn’t been willing to entertain. The state Department of Public Instruction has estimated that it would cost about $8 billion to meet the capital needs of schools across the state.

“This is a problem you don’t fix in hindsight,” said Motsinger, whose mother, Elisabeth Motsinger, serves on the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board. “It’s starting to manifest itself in more trailers being added on the campuses. Many times the lunchrooms, as an example, are so overcrowded in terms of time and expenditure that you have students who are arriving at 7:30 or

Taxation and education The Republican-controlled General Assembly has implemented incremental teacher pay increases while phasing in a succession of tax cuts. Candidates from the two parties demonstrated fundamentally different views on how tax policy affects education, with Democrats arguing that the tax cuts have helped the wealthy at the expense of schools while Republicans claim tax cuts generate the revenue needed to increase funding for education.

“We are the ninth fastest growing state in the country,” LeGrand said. “So as you have more children and you have inflation you cannot continue to dedicate the same percentage of your overall fund and continue to serve your students in the way they need to be served. Our current General Assembly has favored and

has prioritized corporate tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthy over adequately funding our schools.”

Conrad countered, “She’s absolutely dead wrong on the corporate tax rate….

It has not taken away revenue from the state budget. It has brought in revenue because people are hiring, raising raises, expanding, building, bringing new businesses here. We are one of only five states last year that had excess revenue come in, because when you grow the economy, then you have more money to spend on education. The corporate tax rate cut hasn’t competed or reduced our spending on education. That’s funny math.”

“But do you know that four short years ago we were 49th? So that shows you how much we have improved. And we’re gonna continue to improve because it’s a priority. It’s not acceptable to be 39th, but it’s a lot better than 49th.”

“We are radically behind,” Motsinger said. “And that needs to change, and that needs to change quickly. Because students, they don’t get five years to play catch-up games. That means they’ve gone through elementary school, and that foundation is gone.”

Teacher pay LeGrand, who works in the financial aid office at Wake Forest University, said North Carolina faces a “crisis” in declining enrollment at education schools that train teachers, and pointed to a “teacher wage penalty” — the difference between what teachers and their peers with equivalent education earn. The gap in North Carolina, she said, is 35.5 percent, compared to 17 percent nationwide.

All four candidates agreed that teachers should not have to spend money out of pocket on basic school supplies.

“We send money for each child for supplies,” Conrad said. “Teachers should not be having to spend money on supplies. And we’re gonna find out what is happening to that money, and we’re gonna fix it…. I’m baffled by this burden on the teachers that they’re having to go out and spend this, because that should not be happening.”

LeGrand responded, “So I think the answer is that the pot of money that you’re sending to the school districts is not adequate.” Throughout the forum, the Democrat candidate for House hammered at North Carolina’s No. 39 ranking in national per-pupil spending.

Krawiec conceded that the state’s national standing isn’t good enough.

Republican and Democratic candidates for two state legislative districts in suburban Forsyth County outlined radically different agendas for education during a recent forum.

Republicans hold both districts, including Senate District 31, which forms a ring around Winston-Salem from Lewisville to Kernersville, and House District 74, which covers the northern end of the county. Energized by a recent upsurge in teacher activism, Democratic challengers are making a strong push in both districts.

The give-and-take between Republican incumbents and Democrat challengers during a Sept. 26 candidate forum hosted by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Council of PTAs often came down to a clash in emphasis between performance and funding.

“Our education system is radically underfunded by both national standards and by compensation packages for teachers,” said Democrat John Motsinger Jr., a lighting-and-rigging technician who works on traveling theater shows, who is challenging Republican incumbent Joyce Krawiec in Senate District 32.

Republican Debra Conrad touted her leadership on House Education Policy Committee and success in passing a bill to help children with dyslexia.

“Sometimes I think when all we talk about is dollar signs no matter what the topic is — and yeah, money is important — but sometimes the devil is in the details,” said Conrad, who is defending the House District 74 seat against Democrat Terri LeGrand. “And those are the things that really help the kids.

And that’s what I work on every day down there.”

no way you can maintain small class sizes because you will just literally not have the bodies to put in the classrooms,” LeGrand said. “There’s been a lot of lip service… to raising teacher pay. But the fact is, it’s been a shell game. They have been transferring money from longevity pay, from master teacher pay and other resources to encourage teachers to stay in the classroom, and moving them into the salary schedule for new teachers.”

Krawiec said the state has given five consecutive pay raises to teachers since Republicans took control of the legislature, and that the legislature increased the funding for education by $700 million this year. She defended the budgetary changes used by Republicans to fund the pay raises.

“We have done away with a 33-step, very complicated pay system,” Krawiec said. “We think [teachers] should be treated just like any other professional.

They should reach a high-salary schedule earlier than 30 years, which is what it was before.”

8 in the morning eating lunch starting at 10 and it going all the way ’til 1.”

The observation prompted a lecture from Conrad on the delineation of local and state powers.

“The legislature does not build schools here in Forsyth County,” Conrad said. “The county commission puts the schools bond on the referendum. They approve the purchase of the land. They carry the debt load.

“If you’ll go back — and I know you’re young — and read the School Machinery Act that was written after the Great Depression — because the state was not even involved in education before the Depression — it delineated what’s state responsibility and what’s local responsibility,” Conrad continued. “Go back and read that, and you’ll figure it out.”

Motsinger cited the Public School Building Bond Act, which would have put a $1.9 billion school construction bond on the November 2018 ballot. The bipartisan legislation was sponsored by Republican Majority Whip Jerry Tillman (R-Randolph), among others. Both the Senate and House bills died in committee in 2017. The move would not have been unprecedented: NC Policy Watch reported that state lawmakers authorized a school construction bond in 1996.

After defending his proposal, Motsinger chided Conrad: “To my youth, that is not relevant to this conversation. I know that’s a favorite political game — to blame young people for being young.”

Economic inequality The candidates discussed the role of the wealth gap in determining educational outcomes for students. Conrad argued that parents of pre-K students need to get more involved in their children’s education. And Krawiec argued that Republican tax policies have put more people to work.

“We’ve constantly heard about jobs, jobs, jobs, but are they the jobs that allow the family to provide stable living conditions to raise children in?” Motsinger asked. “Far too many of my friends and colleagues work two, three jobs, are not home, are not able to make sure their children do their homework, have time to answer questions.

And that is fundamental to providing a healthy education — a stable education. So, yes, we keep bringing in jobs, but they’re minimum wage jobs, they’re at Walmart, they’re not enough to keep a family afloat.”

Income tax cap Not surprisingly, support for a ballot initiative to cap the state income tax at 7 percent broke down along party lines, with the Republican candidates in favor and Democrats opposed.

“We have proved to you we can run a government, very efficiently fund the necessary things, at [a] 5.49 percent [personal income tax rate], which is what we’re doing now,” Krawiec said. “What has happened as we have slowly reduced that rate, every single year our revenues have increase. You can’t argue that fact.”

LeGrand took the opposite tack.

“We absolutely need the resources that come from our income taxes,” she said. “We can’t tie the hands of future General Assemblies and prevent them from responding quickly and as needed to revenue needs.”

A new legislative map ordered by the federal courts gives Democrats the opportunity to pick up a state House seat in Guilford County.

Opinion Culture Shot in the Triad Puzzles

A formidable incumbent in Guilford’s most rural district District 59 has long been the most rural, and last year’s redistricting made it even more so by subtracting some Republican-leaning areas of Greensboro, while incorporating Democratic-leaning Sedalia. Republican Jon Hardister, who won his first election in 2012 thanks to redistricting by the GOP-controlled General Assembly, has gained increasing clout over his three terms in office, securing the position of majority whip.

Hardister said the Republican’s plan has put NC on the right track.

“The tax cuts have resulted in us having more revenue,” he said. “We had a budget surplus this year of over $300 million. The economy is stronger. The unemployment rates are lower. Jobs are coming to North Carolina. Wages are rising.”

NC’s national ranking for teacher pay has risen from an abysmal 49th to a merely poor 39th.

“We’re working to do better,” Hardister said. “We want our teachers to be the highest paid in the nation. You can’t do it overnight. People say, ‘Why don’t you just raise taxes?’ I fear that higher taxes could result in less growth, and then we would have less revenue to pay teachers.”

Democrat Steven Buccini, who works as a software-engineering consultant, pointedly clarifies that he’s not running on an anti-Trump platform — a conces-

sion to the conservative makeup of the district. He says his candidacy represents a reaction to a series of bad policy decisions by Republican lawmakers, culminating in 2016.

“But really, the election 2016 was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Buccini said. “After years of continuous bad policy, you had HB 2. That came on top of lack of respect for education, and the refusal to expand Medicaid. I regard that as a moral imperative, as the son of a doctor. To see Republican candidates not only getting re-elected, but coasting to re-election — Mr. Hardister didn’t even have an opponent.”

A Greensboro native who attended college at UC-Berkeley and worked in Silicon Valley before returning home, Buccini argues that the NC legislature’s policies have discouraged investment.

“When I’m in boardrooms in Silicon Valley, what they know about North Carolina and what they see on the news is HB 2, Confederate monuments and 30,000 teachers marching in Raleigh because they don’t get paid enough,” Buccini said. “This is really a branding problem, too. We want to attract the best and brightest to our state, and make them feel welcome here.”

Hardister, who voted for HB 2, agreed, to an extent.

“I believe we should have handled that differently,” he said. “The legislature made a mistake. We went too far. That’s why we corrected it.”

But on a host of other issues championed by GOP lawmakers or passed into law by the Republican majority — voter ID, protecting Confederate monuments, restricting access to police body-camera video through the courts and opposing Medicaid expansion — Hardister articulated positions in line with his party.

Buccini argued that the spoils of NC’s robust economy have disproportionately benefited the wealthy, and that when a downturn inevitably hits, poor people will suffer the most.

“They cut taxes but they added a sales tax that hits consumers really when they need it most: If you have to get an emergency car repair, now you’re paying taxes on that when you previously weren’t before,” he said. “We’re hurting our most vulnerable citizens. When this market turns I’m worried that because of this tax reform, because of this constitutional amendment putting a cap on income tax we’re not giving ourselves the flexibility we need.”

Lawson said he stands by his statement, noting that more than 30 other states have voter ID laws on the books.

Asked about the evidence that voter ID laws disproportionately affect non-white voters and poor people, the candidate said he would advocate for DMV to bring its services to remote locations in east Greensboro and other disadvantaged communities.

“If that’s the case – whatever you’re saying – then let’s make it simple and let’s bring it right to their doorstep, and let’s see what happens,” Lawson said.

“Then after that, if there are problems, then we do have an issue. Because if we bring it to their doorstep and we still have an issue, then I agree: There’s probably a systemic thing going on.”

When the federal courts ruled that the legislative map for the Guilford County was an impermissible racial gerrymander, the new map added a district stretching across north Greensboro that is favorable to the Democrats, effectively flipping it out of the Republican column.

Democrat Ashton Clemmons resigned from her job as an assistant superintendent of Thomasville City Schools to run for state House in the new District 57 in Guilford County. The doctoral candidate at UNCG approaches elected office as extension of the public service that motivated her to go into education in the first place. In May, she marched with thousands of teachers in Raleigh, and she stays involved in education by volunteering at Brooks Global Elementary, where her daughter is a second-grader.

Clemmons’ opponent, Republican Troy Lawson, who has chaired the Guilford County Republican Party for two years, argues that regardless of what gains Democrats might make in this election, the Republicans are likely to retain control of the General Assembly, and he’s in a better position to advocate for the district, particularly the economically challenged east Greensboro.

In the most recent campaign finance totals available from late June, Clemmons enjoyed a 10-fold fundraising advantage over Lawson. She has racked up endorsements from a slew of unions, LGBT rights groups and Lillian’s List and Emily’s List, operations that raise funds for women candidates. Lawson received an assist from a local Republican fundraiser headlined by US Rep. Mark Walker.

Clemmons draws on her experience as an educator to argue for investing in traditional public schools. She said she served as principal of the lowestperforming school in the state and got to see it designated as the “Title I school of the year.”

“I know what it takes,” she said. “And what it takes is a belief that all children can achieve.... When we were at our school, we were able to have extended school days, we were able to have an extended school year. But we most importantly created a community center at our school. We had GED classes, language learning classes for parents and children together. We canvassed our communities

and knocked on every family’s door to welcome them to the school year.”

Clemmons opposes charter schools, arguing that they do not provide equal access to students from families with limited financial resources.

“Charter schools do not have to provide transportation for children,” she said. “They do not have to provide meals for children. Our district is 67 percent kids that qualify for free and reduced lunch. So you cannot tell me that in a district that is two-thirds where kids need help to have their food provided, it’s equal access when charter schools don’t provide that and they don’t provide transportation. So we are using state taxpayer money to support schools where every child doesn’t have the opportunity to attend them. I have a fundamental problem with that.”

Lawson, who serves on the board of directors for Gate City Charter Academy located on the eastern outskirts of Greensboro, said parents are willing to overcome the barriers to give their children the opportunity for a quality education through charter schools.

“My opponent will tell you there’s no access,” Lawson said. “Well, guess what?

I challenge her and anyone else to come to the drive line at 7:20 in the morning and see all those parents – hundreds of them – waiting to let their children go to a school that the other side says there’s no access to.” He added that some of the parents don’t own cars, and their children get to school by carpooling.

Among a host of issues the two candidates take different positions is voter ID, part of a slate of Constitutional amendments that voters will consider in November in the form of ballot referenda.

“I read that my opponent says that this does not have to do with race,” Clemmons said. “Obviously, it does, if you are disempowering twice as many African Americans with this law as white voters. So that’s factor No. 1. No. 2: I... went to the DMV to get a new license. I got there at 8:20 in the morning, and I did not leave until 1:45. So the idea that your Constitutional right to vote would be tied to your ability to be off work for five hours, get yourself there, be able to sit and wait for however long it may take is fundamentally against who we should be as a democracy.”

Behind the Kavanaugh hearing

Forget, for a minute, the national spectacle provided

by Bret Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford and the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Because the thing in front of the cameras changes almost every day. It’s important, in times like this, to keep your eye on the ball.

The SCOTUS hearing is largely theatrical. What’s real is the looming election — early voting starts in a couple weeks — and the reality that no one, except maybe the Russians, knows what will happen.

So the Kavanaugh Rage Tour becomes just another election opportunity, which looks like a win-win for Democrats. If Kavanaugh gets the nomination, Dems can capitalize on voter outrage to perhaps give them the edge in November. If it gets kicked down the road, Dems can use the Senate races to rally voters to try to block the nomination.

Why would the nomination get The SCOTUS hearing postponed until after the election? is largely theatrical.

If the court decides that someone charged with a federal crime cannot be again charged at the state level, a presidential pardon would give anyone who earned one a complete pass on even the most heinous convictions. Can you think of anyone in need of such a pardon?

As marvelous a spectacle as it has been, and continues to be, there is a lot more going on here than Kavanaugh.

CULTURE Emerging Designers bring passion to GSO Fashion Week

W

e can tell a lot about people by how they’re dressed, even before they speak or tell us their names.

For those who design the clothes we wear, it’s even more personal.

At this year’s Greensboro Fashion Week, which kicked off Tuesday and has shows Thursday through Sunday, seven emerging designers from all over the world will get to show their personalities through their designs.

“Growing up, I didn’t see a lot of African-American designers,” says Tygerian Burke, one of the designers competing for the $1,500 top prize in the Emerging Designers showcase which takes place Friday night. “I always wanted to be fashion designer as a kid but I was the first to go to college from my lowerincome family. It didn’t seem like I could do it.”

After majoring in sociology and criminology and eventually working in accounting at MetLife, Burke turned to designing in 2014 after she found that she wasn’t happy with either her job or the kinds of clothes she was seeing on the racks.

“I initially started off designing pieces for myself,” Burke says. “I was a mom of two, and you can’t afford to spend lots of money on a blazer, so I tried to make it myself without the price tag.”

Four years later and Burke has her own clothing brand, Tygerian Lace, which “provides a luxury aesthetic to girl bosses worldwide” according to the website, and one title from her win in March at the Charleston Fashion Week Emerging Designer Competition under her sleek, leather belt. She also competed in last year’s Greensboro Fashion Week in the same showcase.

This week, Burke, who is based in Charlotte, will be showing a brand new collection that epitomizes her essence as a designer. Titled Liberation, the collection is a literal representation of how Burke says she feels liberated from a lot of things in her life.

“It’s built off the concept of business suits and deconstructing them,” Burke says. “You can tell that the person that’s wearing the pieces is in a really good place.”

The brightly colored pieces drape elegantly over the models and look comfortable but sharp which is exactly what Burke says she was going for.

“This woman is confident in showing

who she is,” Burke says. “She enjoys her body.”

Kiana Bonollo, another designer in the emerging showcase, brings a whole other perspective as a designer — a model’s.

Bonollo, a sophomore at NC State University, began modeling when she was just 15 years old and continued through high school.

“I was always very interested in the fashion industry and design in general,” Bonollo says.

“I started modeling so I could see the behindthe-scenes of what it’s like to be a designer.”

Eventually, Bonollo used her experience as a model to start designing and won the university’s African American Textile Society Fashion Exposé in April for her collection, “Queen of Hearts,” based on the character from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. This week, Bonollo is showing Bloom, a new collection inspired by cherry blossoms. Shades of pink, black and white color her new pieces while patterns like plaid used in a skirt are reminiscent of Alicia Silverstone from Clueless.

“It still has the edgy aesthetic that Queen of Hearts had but with a little bit more femininity and more modern,” Bonollo says.

“I ordered the pieces so they would grow and change in the sequence like a flower would.”

Bonollo, who still models from time to time, says that she tries to design for girls her age.

“I feel like I kind of design for around my age group, someone in their twenties,” Bonollo says.

At 19, Bonollo is one of the youngest designers in the emerging showcase, along with Riley Phillips, who is a sophomore at Wake Forest University. Phillips, who began by making recycled fashion out of old magazines, is using this opportunity to try her hand at making read-to-wear for the first time.

You need money to be stable, even if you don’t want to think that way. It has been a hard transition… to be so far away from everything you know when you feel isolated.

“I will say that this whole experience has made me mature a lot as a mother in ways I wasn’t expecting this time in my life,” Williams continued. “Looking at this migrant mother photograph, it’s empowering to think women can do so much, endure so much for the sake of their kids. They’re moved by love for their children, love for themselves as well, to be able to fight adversities and wars and uncertainty for a greater good.”
