IT’S TIME TO THINK OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM INTERIM STUDIES OVERVIEW

WHAT IS INTER IM STU DIES? Simply put, it’s two weeklong periods when you get to select an experiential learning opportunity that sparks your creativity and satisfies your curiosity. It’s hands-on learning at its best. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? At Brewster, we know that learning through experience allows students to gain mastery of skills in the real world, outside the confines and restrictions of the classroom. We’re excited to offer a slate of options for 2021 that are varied and relevant. There’s something for everyone! WHEN IS IT? We will be running two Interim Studies experiences this year. The first will be February 22-26, 2021. The second is April 1216, 2021. Students will have the opportunity to participate in two separate experiences, or choose a single experience that runs throughout the duration of both weeks. HOW DOES IT WORK? Take a look at the options here in the 2021 Interim Studies Viewbook. Families should discuss the opportunities together and decide which options are best. An email will be sent home October 14, 2020 from the Director of Interim Studies asking for a selection for each student. These forms must be returned by October 23, 2021 or students will risk losing placement in their top choices.

We hope to offer every student one of their top five choices for both weeks. Experiences with limited space will be filled by class seniority first and then a random lottery if needed. When making selections this year, we will also take into account safety precautions surrounding COVID policies. Students interested in doing an off-campus experience are encouraged to make selections with their dorm and roommates. WHAT DOES IT COST? There are a range of fees: Most Interim Studies experiences are absolutely free, but there are a few options that have a cost for materials, lodging, etc. (This year, the highest-cost experience is $1,500.) There will be limited financial aid for those who apply and demonstrate the financial need for consideration. EXTRA PRECAUTIONS As with everything this year, we will be taking extra precautions with all our Interim Studies experiences. All experiences will follow the same strict health guidelines that we are following elsewhere in the community. In addition, we ask that all families understand that our first priority is to keep our community safe. As such, all experiences are subject to change and/or cancellation at any time if we feel that we will not be able to safely run the experience as the launch day gets closer. QUESTIONS? Email Interim Studies Director Sarah Hunt at shunt@brewsteracademy.org. WHAT IS THE DEADLINE? Submit your top five choices by October 23, 2021.

MOUNTAINS OF DATA:

COMBINING OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP & STEM EDUCATION IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS THE E XP ERIENCE Fluency in STEM topics is becoming increasingly critical for navigating modern academics, business, and everyday life. But interest in STEM among young people is on the decline. This is partially due to perceived difficulty learning technical subjects and lack of applicability to real-world problems. For many kids, the juice doesn’t seem worth the squeeze. Changing the ways we teach these topics is essential for growing interest in STEM and making it accessible to all. This experience teaches applied field-based science to demonstrate why STEM skill sets are important and how to use them. It is based on three tenants: 1. place-based education, 2. technical skills development, and 3. outdoor leadership, which are linked through group problem-solving inspired by the geography and natural resources of New Hampshire. This experience will be off-campus, involving winter and spring camping in locations from the White Mountains to the Lakes Region. We will become wilderness adventurers and field

researchers by following the Pemigewasset River from its ephemeral cobble-armored headwaters through its hydraulic transition to steady, meandering arteries as it traverses southward over shallower gradients. We will learn how 20th-century mill owners understood “big data” of the river and created a blueprint that drove the historical geography of the state. We will demonstrate how abundant fresh water, the most precious natural resource, is transported, retained and recycled as we climb, hike, camp and kayak across the unique riverscapes of the Pemigewasset.
