Jon Browher in
honor of
Ida B. Wells:

A fearless crusader for the right of women to vote, for African-American women to have a voice in the suffrage movement, and against the brutal violence of lynching, Wells represents to me the model of someone who was not only relentless in the pursuit o justice, but also practical in strategic in the ways in which she sought to achieve it. 72 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, Ida B. Wells refused to give up her train car seat & sued the railroad company (and won in local court!) She ran her own newspaper in Memphis until her printing press was destroyed by a white mob. When three local business owners & friends were lynched, she toured the world speaking out against the "national shame" of lynching. As a founding member of the National Association of Colored Women, she embodied their slogan, "Lifting as We Climb." When white suffragettes asked her and other black women to march at the back of the line in a demonstration for the right to vote, she ignored them and proudly stepped to the front of the procession. Her bravery in advocating for what was right & against injustice, during the height of the Jim Crow Era at the turn of the 20th century, for me is without comparison.
