Given my early experiences with a devoted mentor and my years of experience at a few independent boarding schools, I’ve come to realize the first principle of my educational philosophy is simple: close, abiding relationships between students and adults are essential to ensure student growth.

What does growth mean? First and foremost, student growth means heightened understanding of themselves – their privilege, their promise, their responsibility, and their power. Students also need to come to understand the world outside of the confines of their school – the geopolitical and natural perils we so easily forget as we breathe clean air, eat good food, and live in safe communities. And understanding these issues is not nearly enough, for students must gain critical skills and habits – creativity, collaboration, empathy, problem solving among others – in order to develop the capacity to serve the needs of others with genuine force.

Helping students to know themselves and the world more fully and to develop the capacity to serve the needs of others is challenging, interdisciplinary work and thus must be considered as essential threads in the fabric of a student’s education from early education through high school and beyond. All dimensions of student experience – in the community, on the playing field, on the stage, in the classroom – should serve these objectives.

On July 1, 2015, I became Brewster’s 12th Head of School. During the whirlwind of the past three months, I’ve thought lots about the arc of events that has landed me here – at a kitchen table from which I glimpse bits of Winnipesaukee through the trees prior to a day leading this school.

As I settle into my life and work at Brewster, I’m filled with gratitude: for my parents, who supported me at every turn; for a few key teachers in my journey, for some devoted and wise colleagues, one of whom was Nancy, my partner in all things, and our two boys, because they

Brewster has evolved purposefully as a result of its extraordinary origins, the leadership of my recent predecessors Michael Cooper and David Smith, and the work of a devoted faculty and staff.

And I’m filled with curiosity. How is it that this approach to education works as well as it does? What can happen during my tenure to make it yet more effective? As I come to understand more deeply the myriad reasons why Brewster is The way education should be and develop visions for the future along with the faculty, I will share my insights with you through Head Lines.

In closing, I’m looking forward to this next phase of my journey, Brewster’s journey, our journey together. Stay tuned.

The Academy Welcomes New Board Chair Roy Ballentine

J

ust as July 1 was a significant day for Craig Gemmell, marking his first day as head of school for Brewster Academy, it was an equally important day for long-time board member Roy C. Ballentine, who became chairman of the Brewster Academy

Board of Trustees, succeeding Daniel T. Mudge, who had served in

that position since 2001.

Ballentine and wife Sandy are no strangers to Brewster or Wolfeboro.

Residents of Wolfeboro since 1979, their daughter Susan graduated from Brewster in 1994 followed by son Brian in 1997. Ballentine is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Ballentine Partners LLC, which traces its roots to Ballentine & Co. Inc., which he founded in 1984. Additionally, Ballentine is an endowment trustee for the Wolfeboro Area Children’s Center, a trustee for Huggins Hospital, and a board member of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

Ballentine joined the Brewster board in 2006 and prior to stepping into the role of chairman, Ballentine served as treasurer of the board and chair of the finance and budget committee. He continues serving as chair of the investment committee.

Sometimes in life, unknowingly, a circumstance or a person redirects our course or leads us down a path we wouldn’t have necessarily considered or sought. The choices me make, the relationships we build, the successes and failures that mark us, the chances we take, travel with us.

Beginning with Craig Gemmell’s Head Lines (page 2) and in the following pages, three alumni and a former faculty member who span the decades generously share some of the pivotal moments that have shaped their journeys.

Some of these journeys were more methodical, more measured while others were more happenstance. Their journeys have passed through Brewster, some decades ago, another this decade, and another, a maiden voyage of sorts, having just embarked this May. Brewster, or more specifically, the community that is Brewster, plays prominently in most of these stories.

FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY: FRED HUMPHREY’S JOURNEY “Don’t fear failure along the way.”

Fred described how he felt leaving his hometown, saying, “I was top of the heap in my town. Everyone knew me and suddenly I was headed off to this little dot on the map in rural New Hampshire.”

But he decided to make the best of it. He arrived at Brewster where, at the time, all of the boarding students were boys. He signed up for football and basketball and made the varsity basketball team that first year.

Life at Brewster was an adjustment. “First, they really cleaned up my language,” he laughed. He described headmaster Wilfred Paro, a “very prim and proper man” who required frequent inspections of the boys: “No sideburns. No facial hair. Tie pulled up tight. Shoes shined.

Brewster was a life changing experience for me,” he said. “It gave me the confidence to not really fear much of what I was going to face in the rest of my life.”

And he showed no fear! After graduation, Fred said he sailed the Caribbean for a year, explored Central America, spent time as a ski instructor in Sun Valley, Idaho, built a 49-foot sailboat with his wouldbe wife Denise, moved to China and manufactured sailboats, moved to Germany, bought a Volkswagen Beetle and drove to Rome to visit the Vatican. In 1970, Fred was at Kent State the night before the shootings took place. He participated in the March on Washington and met some of the Black Panthers. He lived for three weeks in a cheap Fred Humphrey ’69 at the Brewster Medal event in May.

When you first meet Fred, you feel as though you are becoming reacquainted with a dear, old friend. He greets you with a great big smile and sparkling blue eyes, and immediately engages you in conversation. He is curious about everything and everyone and loves swapping stories and ideas. Fred is a man who has seen the world, but never lost his enthusiasm and appreciation for the smaller things.

DISCOVER WHAT’S BEHIND THIS DORR “Unlike an author creating a character for a book, we have only so much control over the path our lives take.”

hat is it like to read a book in which you are a central character? Not someone like you, not a character that happens to have your name, but actually you, because the author is your friend and

he based the character on you? And furthermore, what if you were so connected with this author, that you helped him with some of his most important work? Your ideas and your mark subtly stamped on page after page after page? Millions of people read these books, and when they do, they are reading a little bit about you, a little bit from you, and being thrilled or frightened by it perhaps.

What if the author was Stephen King? This has been a true story for Brewster alumnus Russ Dorr ’64, “the man behind the gore” as one interviewer called him. Russ worked as a physician assistant (PA) for 42 years, but also has served as a medical consultant for author Stephen King for almost as many years. Russ met King in 1974 when he was working for a family practice in Bridgton, Maine.

By 2013, Russ was seriously considering retirement. He was in Atlanta

It seems a natural step for Russ to write a book of his own. His book will not be fiction, however. It will explore how people deal with end of life. As a caregiver, he has witnessed many patients coping with a terminal illness and many families dealing with the loss of a loved one. People often make mistakes at these confusing and painful times of life, Russ explained. He hopes that his book will provide support and guidance.

“I never would have expected any of this,” Russ says of his journey. “If someone said, this is what is going to happen in your life, I would have been excited, and frightened because there’s a lot of things I would not want to go through again, once was enough. But again, I have felt so blessed. So lucky to have been at the right place at the right time.”

“Few men are islands ...” Okay, that’s not quite what John Donne states in his poem, but as I look back on my life’s path, I realize that I’ve been a solo-island-sort-of-guy and that oceans and islands have been a big part of my not-sochartered course. The ceremony, which took place on Radley Court in the Smith Center, was followed by a brunch for inductees and family, friends, and alumni in the Hall of Fame room.

“You don’t get here without a lot of help,” he acknowledged, thanking his parents, brother, teammates, and classmates. He also joked that his never-ending interest and passion in Bobcat Nation is driving some of those same people nuts as he attempts to keep up with and follow the progress of every Brewster Bobcat basketball player in college and the NBA.

school, and went to Kingswood for his junior high years. The Hunters are well known throughout Tuftonboro and the family has rich ties to Brewster Academy. Cory was the fifth generation of the Hunters to attend BA. And, Bobcat Nation reaped the benefits of having Cory Hunter for four years.

“Hunter was a standout, two-sport athlete during his time as a Bobcat. On the basketball court, he was a sharp shooter for head coach Dave Bolduc in the early 1990s. In his senior season, Cory knocked down 110 three-pointers, which was a school record at the time. On the baseball field, Hunter was a smooth infielder who hit in the middle of the lineup. Again, under coach Bolduc’s direction, Hunter thrived on the diamond in the spring.

In his senior year Cory was a two-sport captain and played on a basketball team that reached the prestigious Class A NEPSAC basketball tournament and was an All-League performer in baseball.

After Brewster Cory attended Brandeis University where he was a member of their basketball program. At Brandeis, Hunter continued his slick shooting ways and as a junior earned the K.C. Jones Award, which is given to the Brandeis basketball player who demonstrates

After college Hunter returned to Tuftonboro and assisted with the Brewster baseball and basketball teams for seven years. In 2001, Hunter took over as the commissioner of the WolfeboroTuftonboro Youth Boys Basketball program and has become the leader of a healthy youth program in the area. And, in 2007, Cory founded the Winnipesaukee Kings travel basketball organization and has been coaching those teams ever since.

“As a community, we are very fortunate to have a man like Cory Hunter donating his time and knowledge to our young people and it is even more special since he is a Brewster graduate,” Lawlor said.

Cory is now back on campus living in Mason House, where his wife, faculty member Lauren Hunter, is a community life parent. They have two children and when Cory isn’t sharing his passion for sports with the local youth, he is the owner and operator of The Village Green

Cory began his remarks by describing himself as a “ridiculously scrawny and shy 15-year-old.”

“You wouldn’t think that a 5’ 11”, 135-lb. boy from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, would ever have any business being on the same basketball court or baseball field as 18- and 19-year olds looking to play Division 1 sports. Lucky for me I came to Brewster at a time when there was a teacher who was also a coach for both basketball and baseball teams; that coach, Dave Bolduc, had given me the opportunity as an eighth grader before I came to Brewster to practice on a fairly regular basis with the varsity baseball team. That team included a phenomenal player named Zack Pringle ‘92. Being around that team and especially being around Zack gave me the desire and showed me what I needed to do to be a special player someday just like him. I don’t think Zack could ever know how much of an impact his willingness to help me truly had on me.

“That situation wouldn’t have been possible without coach B’s openness with this program and his approach. That same approach is, in my mind and heart, a major factor in how successful I was able to become in both basketball and baseball. From the beginning of my career here at Brewster I was surrounded by amazingly talented basketball and baseball players many of whom went on to successful college careers at high level schools. I was the player who knew he wasn’t the best athlete on the court or on the field. Thanks to Coach B, though, I never needed to be. I think he recognized in me the hunger and fight that I had and he was going to find a way to make that work for our team.”

Hunter thanked many current and former faculty for shaping him into the young man he has become, saying “me being here today is only the result of so many amazing teachers, coaches, and administrators I had here at Brewster.”

He thanked Bill Lyons and Ron Nentwig for looking out for him when he went slightly astray; David Smith for being the strong male leader he needed at the time; teachers Dick Fahey, Ken Brown, Bruce Gorrill,

Mary Fallon, TJ Palmer, Peter Friend, and Bob Richardson who all opened his mind to curiosity; and athletic director Bill Pottle and to Dave Bolduc who took a chance on a scrawny local kid.

Sophomore year she was ready to move out of her comfort zone and “made a huge effort to be part of the school.” She vividly recalled the entire school at a dance the night before graduation.

“The reason I remember this moment is not because of the great dance moves but because I saw so many of my friends and classmates surrounded by people who cared about them, who lived, worked, and played sports with them. …

Everyone in that crowd jumping up and down had a smile on their face … I really believe it was because everyone let go of their differences and just decided to enjoy that moment together because this group of people would never be gathered together again.”

Senior year opened with the first All School of the year happening on Sunday night, “one of the only All Schools where kids walk into Anderson completely awake. … Dr. Cooper gave a speech that night about how the following day would be his last, of many, first days of school. The entire school got to see a picture of Dr. Cooper on his first day of kindergarten and everyone left excited for the school year to begin.”

She went on to say that she left that All School with “all the appreciation in the world for my remaining days at BA.” Megan then encouraged her classmates to appreciate the remaining hours of their time as Brewster students, too.

“Whether you were here for four years or one, just take a moment to remember how Brewster, or someone here has touched your life. Brewster itself is its own goodie, a place that has defined us as much as we have defined it. Thank you.”

Walter P. Hertz

Honoring Inspiration and Dedication With an Endowed Scholarship

L

ong before globalization became a household term and colleges coast to coast offered majors in international studies, there was Walter P. Hertz, one of Brewster’s most inspiring teachers.

Hired to teach French and Latin in 1972, Walter Hertz was a one-man campaign promoting the importance of interconnectedness between countries and cultures. In his language classes he taught politics and cuisine as well as verb conjugations. When he began teaching economics and current affairs, he brought his experience as an international diplomat, economist, and translator and wove in the culture clashes between East and West and the histories of each country. One could not understand a nation’s economic choices without context, he believed.

His file cabinets overflowed with articles on everything from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to Peruvian crime. He saved articles not for his own edification but for the edification of others.
