D

uring the decade that Dr. Cooper has led the Academy, Brewster has evolved strategically,

programmatically, and physically. Most important, during this time under his guidance, Brewster has continued to do what it does best – innovatively capitalize on the best proven teaching and learning practices while serving a range of student learning styles in a supportive and caring environment.

STUDENT-CENTERED INVESTMENTS Although it’s inevitable that existing facilities must be updated or renovated and new facilities must be built to meet student and community needs, Dr. Cooper’s vision is focused more on what happens within those facilities and how they are utilized to prepare students for the next step along their educational journey. Whether a performing arts venue to hone student acting or musical talents or a turf field to better prepare athletes for the reality of collegiate athletics or enhanced technology to keep up with the exponential pace of innovative technology in education and the world, his vision is about continuously investing in the student experience.

1. During your first year as head of school what surprised you the most about Brewster?

While I was well prepared for what I was to encounter during my early days at Brewster, the level of intensity of what we do on a daily basis was probably the most eye opening. Teenagers live in the moment, and as a result, create an environment that is naturally grounded in immediacy… whether that immediacy is in the form of their own gratification or the desire to create change in the world around them. It’s that constant push and pull, and the level of intensity that goes along with it, that was of most surprise to me during my first year.

I was also pleased to find just how accurate my early perceptions were about what the climate of the school was like. While I had a sense that there were many positive qualities about the school that could be built upon, I didn’t fully realize just how many of those qualities there were. For example, I saw that the recognition system was a terrific way to manage and guide student conduct to help students learn responsibility. What I didn’t realize until I got further into the school year was just how much more could be done with the premises set forth by this system to branch into other aspects of life at school, like the now emerging program on emotional intelligence as one example.

2. Brewster began integrating emotional intelligence into its curriculum a few years ago. Business leaders and educators continue to affirm the importance of emotionally intelligent individuals. Why do you feel it is so important?

Noted management expert Peter Drucker has said that in today’s knowledge-based world it is critically important for individuals to

learn how to manage themselves and that the process begins with first learning to know

who we are and then learning how to build

on one’s strengths. The self-awareness that is

needed to achieve this level of understanding is

increasingly difficult for young people to acquire without an intentional means by which they can

learn much needed concepts and skills. When you couple the need for teaching students these kinds of skills with research on the importance for educators to understand the relationship between emotion and cognition and its impact on the learning environments, you end up with a powerful way to positively affect the personal growth and development of an adolescent. In the end it’s helping to position students well, not only for college, but also for life beyond.

While cognition and classroom learning are still critical aspects of a child’s secondary education, what we do to help them become more adept at understanding and managing their emotions is vital to their success in the world in which they are entering. To be involved in such an undertaking as we are with our partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence is exciting and puts us on the cutting edge.

This year we will continue to work with our research partners at Yale to measure how the implementation of the RULER program is

influencing our students’ personal growth and development. Already we are seeing a difference in the way our students conduct themselves as members of the community and in how they approach their personal goal setting.

3. When you arrived at Brewster in 2003 a 1:1 laptop program had been in place for a decade – unheard of at that time. How has technology at Brewster evolved in the past 10 years? Is Brewster still considered a leader in technology use?

That’s an interesting question. While we are seeing an increasing focus on technology across the educational landscape, I think that because of our experience (and ability to learn and adapt new technologies as a whole school) we have been better positioned than most schools to leverage advances in technology to further develop our academic program, thereby staying ahead of the curve. Examples include how we have evolved our portal and what we are able to do with it to develop, manage, and deliver our curriculum; providing a place where students can receive frequent feedback on their performance; and permitting our faculty the use of an “electronic plan book,” in addition to serving as a repository of our curriculum. These tools and their integration into the whole school program have allowed us to go further with what we can offer our students as part of their educational experience. While many schools have introduced the use of laptop computers, I would dare say that many are not truly using them in the 1:1 manner that we are. I still think that’s a bit of differentiator for Brewster.

It is that 1:1 mindset and disciplined focus on the needs of each individual student where I see the greatest potential for Brewster to maximize technology going forward. We need to continue to look at how technology is changing and how we can evolve with it. For example, a pilot group has been examining how tablets may be integrated into our curriculum. While some of our peer schools have announced that they are becoming “iPad schools,” we have taken a more measured approach to see how much that technology will make a difference in student learning. Because the Brewster Model is built on the premise of individualized learning, we feel that mandating a specific device – a laptop, iPad, or the next technological evolution – does not make sense for our students. It matters less to us which device our students prefer to utilize, but rather that they have the tools they need for their individual work styles and academic focus areas. With the further burgeoning of cloud computing and what that means for access to documents and information, we see that it will likely become less important what device you access it with, as much as it will be important that you know how to access it in the most effective manner. And that’s where the professional development of our faculty comes in; providing them with the tools and training to hone their technology skills along with the encouragement to try new things to see what may work best with and for our students’ process of learning and further development of our curriculum.

4. How do we educate and prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist?

To underscore how we engage students in their learning, we have within the last few years introduced the concept of project-based learning (PBL) into our curriculum. PBL allows us to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate what it is they have learned, in an

authentic manner, as a way for them to make larger connections between what they learn in a class to what it means to apply that learning.

After three years we are beginning to see some real depth to what students are accomplishing with their projects, at a level of engagement that indicates they are making strong connections between what interests them and how that may translate into a college major. It’s been exciting to see this aspect of our curriculum grow, and I would predict that we will see it continue to mature as the needs of our learners evolve.

6. In tough economic times and with increased competition for students, what will sustain Brewster in the next decade and beyond?

I think what will have the greatest impact on our sustainability is how we maintain the core of what we do best. Too often in challenging times it’s easy to shift with the changing winds and lose sight of what you’re best at and how you can become better at that versus chasing what turns out to be a whim of the marketplace or a passing trend. It’s that centrality of focus and relentless pursuit of greatness that will continue to make Brewster relevant in times of change.

While remaining true to our core values, I think we need to refine and improve upon what makes Brewster a unique and powerful investment. We believe that Brewster offers the very best instructional support program you will find, and we do it in a team-based structure that encourages a culture of collaboration and growth. without experiencing it firsthand, but countless testimonials from parents and alumni tell us we are on the right track. As one parent recently wrote to me, “The beauty of a well run IS program is that the teaching team knows when to push, but also when to give a little breathing room.

Students like our daughter do not always move on a straight line upward, but with some support and a venue in which to ask questions and relay concerns, they can thrive… she believes in herself and her abilities. This is truly the greatest gift Brewster has offered her to date.”

With the addition of emotional literacy and project-based learning, we believe we have the building blocks in place to achieve our ambitious goal to become the recognized leader

in customized and personalized education.

To fuel this model in the future, we will continue to invest in the best faculty and recruit students who are motivated to grow in a challenging, yet supportive environment.

it’s generally not that math course that

they had, but it’s more about the person who taught that class and how they

helped them become better students and

that they can be a good student and achieving

successes that they did not think possible. All it took was the right kind of encouragement and

mentoring that can come from an experience like Brewster offers.

8. As you’ve met with alumni over the years, how has their feedback influenced your thinking about the Brewster experience?

Whenever I meet with alumni I am always struck by a common thread that exists about their Brewster experience that generally comes up almost immediately when we meet, and that’s the sense of community that exists at the school and their experience with it. I know that many schools can make that claim, but what I think makes our circumstance a bit unique is that we are bringing together a diverse group of students and successfully have them study, live, and

learn together; and I don’t mean diversity in the sense that we most often think of today. What I mean is we bring students together, and have for quite some time, who cover a wide spectrum of learning expertise and abilities. We successfully challenge them in a way that maximizes their learning potential within an environment that is individualized in its approach to learning and can customize a program such that the student, no matter their learning profile, can be pushed and challenged to help meet their potential. What’s so refreshing about our approach is how much it represents the world in which they will soon enter. Where in the world will they work and

interact with people just like themselves? They won’t. So wouldn’t we be doing our students somewhat of a disservice if we didn’t expose

them to opportunities to interact with individuals who are different from themselves? While I think the answers to these questions are somewhat self-evident, we often find that educational

settings are not necessarily as reflective of what students will experience once they leave us.

So for us, we believe that we are providing an educational experience in such a way that all education ought to be done in this manner.

9. What was on your summer reading list?

As most know, this summer was the 150th

anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. And being the history buff that I am, I have been

reading Allen Guelzo’s new book Gettysburg: The Last Invasion. I was sufficiently

inspired by Guelzo’s book to make a return trip to Gettysburg this

August. It was a great opportunity to bring to life the key elements

of the battle and its application to lessons in leadership.

I’ve also been reading a terrific book titled Give and Take by

Adam Grant. Grant’s premise is that in our professional

interactions we either act as

depending upon which one of

these roles we play, it has a strong determination as to whether we

will rise to the top of the success ladder or not.

I won’t spoil the book for those interested in reading more other than to say that he develops a compelling case for his conclusions and does so through example and stories to support his contentions.

And finally, I recently finished How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough, another good book on what it is we need to do to help children grow into the kinds of adults we aspire them to become.

I found his ideas about the development of character to be particularly good, which further led me to view a good Tedx Talk, “True Grit: Can Perseverance be Taught?” by Dr. Angela Duckworth, a proponent of the value of developing grit. I would encourage you to view her talk, as her message is compelling for not only educators, but parents of children, as well.

10. Where do you see Brewster putting its emphasis over the next decade?

I think the best way to answer that question is

to reflect on what has been accomplished over

the past 10 years to help put into context what needs to be emphasized over the next decade.

One of the things that I am most proud of is how much the reputation of the school has

grown. The school was beginning to make a

mark in the independent school world with the introduction of the 1:1 laptop program and the Brewster Model during the mid-1990s, but in

the past 10 years the school has really taken off

as we have begun to more clearly and succinctly differentiate ourselves.

We are becoming more known as a school that educates the whole person in a demonstrable

way. The proof is in our college placement and

college success rates and how we are preparing our graduates for life, in particular with our

intentional approach to emotional intelligence and our instructional support program.

during their admission process. She said, “Your students are different, they look you in the eye when they talk to you, they shake your hand and engage in conversation.”

growth and development. I learned early on in my career the importance of developing

nurturing environments versus ones that are toxic in nature. The best of human behavior comes out when the environment supports

growth and development, both the good parts of it and the not so good parts of it. We all got

into this business because we like kids and enjoy seeing them blossom and emerge as successful and competent adults.

So looking ahead at the next 10 years, I believe that Brewster needs to continue to capitalize on its strengths and what has helped us to grow our reputation and begin to explore ways that it can deliver its education in the most cost effective and efficient manner. That said, I don’t think that we should deviate from our core as discussed above, but I do think that we need to examine how we can approach what we do in such a way that maximizes value and meaning.

I think that, while what we do is expensive, it offers great opportunity and outcomes for students looking for the kind of education that we provide.

One of our challenges will be how we can continue to make it affordable and accessible.

What I don’t think we should do is water down what it is we offer to artificially keep the cost lower. What we need to emphasize are the outcomes of our education to demonstrate our value. I believe that for the foreseeable future we need to further refine our answer to helping students in how they learn to manage themselves (our program of emotional intelligence) and that we work to get even better at delivering a program that has great value to the life success of our students. We as educators need to become adaptable, life-long learners – a goal we so fervently try to instill in our students – and look to make smart decisions while being true to ourselves, who we are, and why we Zarkin Tennis Complex, do what it is we do. dedicated 2008
