The first steps may be paint and wallpaper but we know that it’s the finishing touches that can complete the perfect scheme. This is why we offer a Made to Measure service with an unrivalled choice of beautiful fabrics and products from the best brands.

In branch or online you can select a suitable fabric from a wide range of price points, then order exceptional quality Made to Measure window treatments with the exact requirements to complete your space. Every order is made with the utmost care and attention to detail and available usually within 28 days (excluding shutters).

This brochure takes you easily through the steps for ordering your perfect window treatments. Follow each step carefully and then place your order in branch, where our staff will be more than happy to help you.

CHOOSE YOUR HEADING All of our curtains are made to your measurements and fully lined. They have mitred corners, are weighted with lead weights and come ready to hang. All curtains are pattern matched from the top, so if more than one pair is required, consider if you would like them matched from the top or bottom. The first decision to make is to choose which heading you would like.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR CURTAINS The secret to making perfectly tailored curtains starts with accurate measurements, just follow this easy stepby-step guide for the perfect result.

We would always recommend having your pole or track in place before measuring for your curtains.

Ideally, if space allows, this should be positioned approximately 15cm above the window recess and extend 15-30cm either side. However you may wish to allow more space either side of the recess if you have chosen a heading which gives a wider stack back, such as tab top or goblet. If space is restricted it may be a good idea to choose an eyelet or wave heading as this optimises light from the window.

Measure the width

CURTAINS

Measure the width of the curtain track or pole, not the window, allowing for any centre overlap or returns to the wall as applicable. Tip: Always use a steel tape when measuring, as fabric tapes can stretch.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR CURTAINS

Measure the Length The finished length is the measurement from the top of the curtain to the bottom of the hem and is entirely dependent on the look you would like to achieve. The type of curtain header and/or your chosen track or pole will determine the point at which you need to measure from, see pictures to the right.

STEP 3

Then decide whether you would like your curtains to fall to the sill, just below the sill or to the floor.

Most of our Made to Measure items are priced by Price Code from AA to Q. These relate to the retail price per metre of your chosen fabric - please refer to the table left to find the relevant price code and use this in conjunction with the pricing tables that follow

• For floor length: M easure to 1.5cm from the floor, allowing clearance for carpets. Pooled (or puddled) curtains can offer a luxurious look with surplus fabric sitting on the floor, though extra length will need to be added to the finished drop.

If you don’t have your track or pole in place, we recommend fitting one before you measure. As a guide, fit approximately 15cm above the window recess and centre, ensuring you have (ideally) about 30cm either side of window to allow room for the curtains to stack back.

Metal Or Wooden Poles Measure from the underside of the ring or pole (if corded) to your desired drop.

Track Without Pelmets Measure from the top of the rail to your desired drop. If required, add 1cm to enable the rail to be fully covered (pencil/pinch pleat).

Tab Top Heading Measure from the top of the pole to your desired drop.

It is recommended that the pole be fitted a minimum of 15cm above the window recess to minimise light exposure.

CHOOSE YOUR LINING

Quality curtains need to be properly lined. We offer standard, quality cotton lining in a choice of neutral colours: cream, almond, stone, white or ivory, and thermal lining in ivory. Our enhanced lining offer includes interlining, dimout lining and coloured linings.

Interlining Interlining gives body to finer fabrics and adds a particularly luxurious look to your curtains. It can also help to reduce light damage as well as blocking out sound and draughts. We always recommend the use of interlining with silk. Headings do appear bulkier with interlining and our staff will be pleased to advise you on this.

Dimout Lining Dimout products are naturally suited to bedrooms where the ability to control light and temperature levels is important for quality of sleep, particularly for babies and young children. However dimout fabrics can also be useful in other rooms if strong outside light sources shine through your windows. They can help with temperature control, providing thermal insulation which keeps in warmth during cold months and excludes strong sun rays during the hot summer months. Available in cream and white.

Coloured Linings Give your curtains a truly professional look by using coloured lining to match or contrast with your fabric. Our beautifully soft linings come in a wide selection of colours to choose from - see right. They are 100% cotton and have a very good light fastness rating.

CONTRAST EDGING

Truly bespoke curtains will include further design elements which enhance the fabric and complement the overall room scheme. Enhancements can include the addition of contrast edges, decorative buttons or beautifully coloured linings. These options are priced in our tables, but if there are other design elements you would like to incorporate, please speak to a member of staff who will seek specialist advice on your behalf.

We work with highly skilled and experienced makers who can make your design an exciting reality.

Adding an edge (either vertical or horizontal) in a contrast fabric can be the perfect finish for your curtains. The contrast fabric can often be an alternative type of fabric, such as linen on silk, which can add a bit of luxury, as well as provide extra protection on a delicate fabric.

The vertical contrast edges are usually the leading edges of a pair of curtains, though can also be on the outside edges; the horizontal band of contrast can be added to the bottom of the curtain or across the top; or you can have both, creating a ‘frame’ effect.

Vertical Contrast Edges Our standard vertical contrast edges are up to 20cm wide and are sewn on the two leading edges of the pair of curtains (i.e. the edges that meet when the curtains are drawn).

To calculate a price for a pair of curtains with a vertical edge, simply follow these steps: 1) Pick the price code of your chosen contrast fabric that you are using for the edge.

2) Choose the relevant drop of your curtains.

3) Add the price from the table on the right to the price of your curtains from the Curtain price table (p.10-15).

4) If you also require outside contrast edges, then please add the supplement shown right to your final price.

Horizontal Contrast Edges Our standard horizontal contrast edges are up to a depth of 60cm and can be sewn to the top or bottom of your pair of curtains.

To calculate a price for a pair of curtains with a horizontal contrast edge, follow these steps:

CURTAINS

1) Take your actual curtain drop required.

2) Deduct the depth of the contrast band required (up to a maximum of 60cm).

3) Price up your curtains using this reduced drop from the Curtain price table (p.10-15).

4) A dd the price from the table on the right, using the fabric price code relating to your chosen contrast fabric to get the final price of your curtains.

Prestigious • Journey Beyond

A voile is a lightweight woven fabric, which is made into curtains with no lining - often called ‘sheers’. Voile curtains are ideal for creating a light, airy feel to a room and are often used for privacy whilst still allowing light into the room.

Many voile fabrics are made much wider than normal, up to 300cm wide. These are known as ‘room high’ (or ‘rail road’) fabrics and allow for a voile to be made up to a maximum drop of 270cm, with no joining seams.

Should you wish to have a voile made up from a ‘normal width’ fabric (137cm wide), please ask a member of staff for pricing details.

CURTAINS

Voiles can be made up with the same curtain header types as described on page 4 (except Goblet) or with a slot top heading. Slot tops will be made with a 2.5cm channel for threading your net/rod through. Wider channels are available on request. There will be a 1.5cm decorative heading above the slot channel as standard.

PELMETS

A pelmet is usually a solid three-dimensional box, with a front and a return at either side that is fixed above the window recess to cover the top of the curtain and all its fixings. In some cases the pelmet may be a flat board that is fixed across the window recess, if the curtains are hung within the recess and not face-fixed.

Our pelmets are covered with your chosen fabric and standard interlining or wadding. They can be embellished with trims or contrasting fabrics to create the perfect finish. Pelmets can be straight or shaped and can be used with both blinds and curtains.

The images (facing) show examples of popular shapes. Please provide a template drawing of your desired shape, including returns. As a guide, we recommend the pelmet drop to be 1/5 of the overall curtain drop.

VALANCES

A window valance has the same function as a pelmet in that it covers the uppermost part of the window as a decorative finish, helping to conceal any drapery hardware.

In contrast to a pelmet, a valance offers a ‘softer’ finish.

Our valances are normally paired with pencil pleat curtains and can be made from the same or contrasting fabric and with a decorative heading, such as a pinch pleat.

Triple Pinch Straight Valance

Valances can be shaped or straight and can be embellished with trims or contrast fabric. Some examples are shown here. The number of widths required for your valance is the same as the total number of widths in your curtain (i.e. one pair of curtains with two widths in each will require a valance of 4 widths). Unless otherwise stated, we will calculate the depth of your valance proportionally to the length of your curtains (approximately 1/5).

For a more opulent window dressing, swags and tails are perfect. A swag is draped over the top of a pelmet or pole to create an elegant look, and the tail is the vertical drop of fabric, which adds length to the window dressing.

Swags and tails are purely aesthetic elements, which work alongside the practical curtain.

Our swags are lined with our premium lining and made 80cm (wide) x 45cm (deep) as standard; the tails are made proportionally to the length of the curtains, up to a 100cm drop, and are lined with a coloured lining of your choice. See page 17 for available colours of lining.

As a general rule: • A board up to 1m requires 1-2 swags • A 2m board would require 3-4 swags • A 3m board would require 4-5 swags Per Swag

How to price: 1) D ecide how many swags you will have.

There are normally 2 x tails per window.

2) C hoose if you want them lined or interlined - interlining will add bulk but creates a very luxurious look, particularly recommended with silks.

3) F ind the price code of your fabric and price accordingly, using the table here.

4) S hould you wish to add any trims, find the price code of your trim and add this to the price of each swag and tail.

Fitting options: 1) V elcro tape is attached to the back of each individual piece (swag & tail), so they can be fixed onto an existing board.

Buttons are a decorative addition to your curtain heading, sewn into the base of each pinch or goblet pleat. They can be covered in the same fabric as your curtains, a contrast fabric or a coloured lining, and we would usually estimate 5 buttons per curtain width.

The table shown below gives prices for buttons covered in the same fabric or in coloured lining - please see page 17 for available colours. Simply add the price here to the cost of your curtains from the Curtain price tables (p.10-15).

For buttons in a contrast fabric, you will require an additional 1 metre of this fabric, which needs to be added to the price below.

HOW TO MEASURE When measuring for your Roman or roller blind, you will first need to decide where you want it to hang – either inside or outside the window recess. Then simply follow the steps below, taking the three relevant measurements without making any adjustments for headrails or fittings as we will do that for you.

ROMAN BLINDS

Please note that if you are measuring for a roller blind, they do not have a headrail. Instead, the fabric is ‘rolled’ around a barrel of the same width and control fittings are added to either end. We use the width measurement you provide to assemble the components to the correct size. This means that the fabric of the blind will be narrower than the width measurement provided, so it is important to ensure that this measurement is wide enough to cover the glazed area of your window. This does not apply to Roman blinds.

NOTE: Look out for the position of window handles and tiles, and ensure your measurements allow for the blind to be able to pass these without problem 30 Dress Your Windows

BLINDS

Measure the distance from the top of the recess (where the blind will be fixed) down to the floor – this is called the installation height.

INSTALLATION HEIGHT

Outside the recess For the width, decide how far you want your blind to extend either side of the window - we would recommend at least 5cm each side, if space allows.

To measure the drop, we would usually recommend measuring from approximately 10cm above the recess down to the desired length – normally 5-15cm below the sill (allow 1.5cm clearance above the radiator) or to the sill (if the sill projects).

Measure the distance from the top measurement (where the blind will be fixed) down to the floor – this is called the installation height.

Inside the recess Measure the width of the inside recess from wall to wall in three places and record the shortest measurement; repeat with the length from the top of the reveal to the sill. Look out for the position of window handles and tiles, and ensure your measurements allow for the blind to pass these without problem.

ROMAN BLINDS

Roman blinds will bring a feeling of warmth, sophistication and style to your home.

A Roman blind is one where the fabric lies flat when the blind is fully lowered, and is raised in linear folds. These folds can be stacked in graduated form, known as ‘waterfall’, or directly behind one another in a ‘self-stack’ style. The classic waterfall folds show off more of the fabric and take up a slightly larger drop when raised. Self-stack blinds offer a more minimal, contemporary look and take up less space at the window, when raised.

best. The only stitches shown will be the small ‘catch’ stitches along the rod pockets which attach the face fabric to the lining at the back of the blind. Our highly skilled makers will ensure that these are as discreet as possible but different fabrics will allow this to different degrees. High sheen fabrics will always show catch stitches whereas printed cottons or embroidered fabrics can hide them very effectively.

Roman blinds can be made from most fabrics; the finish will depend on how the fabric behaves in response to folding and stitching. Our Brewers branch staff will be happy to seek expert advice on your behalf if you have any queries regarding your chosen fabric.

Our Roman blinds are made on a specialist high quality track system and come complete with fixing brackets for face or ceiling mounting. They have a fixed rotary sidewinder with a choice of chain colours to complement your scheme, and are fully compliant with current child safety regulations. All blinds will be lined as standard and blinds over the width of the fabric will be made with a centre panel of the full width, and two side seams.

Contrast Edges Contrast edges can be vertical (down the sides), horizontal (along the bottom) or both, creating a ‘frame’. Try using an alternative material to your blind choice, for example silk on cotton, or a bright pop of colour on a neutral background, for that special finish to your design.

We offer a wide range of colours, textures and designs. Roller blinds offer one of the most practical style of window shadings.

Although fabrics are accepted for manufacture as laminated roller blinds and every effort is made to deliver a perfect product, it is not possible for us to guarantee that geometric designs will be true. (In textiles, a straightness tolerance of 3.5% is the norm. All blinds will be made to this standard).

Some fabrics will not be suitable for lamination, such as embroidered fabric.

Our standard Roller blinds have a straight finish and are reverse rolled onto either a 28mm or 38mm roller tube (as is appropriate to the size of the blind and weight of fabric) with a side winder operation. They are supplied with neat overlocked edges and a sewn pocket to hold the bottom bar. Blinds over the width of the fabric will be produced with a centre panel and two side seams.

The lamination process allows Roller blinds to be produced using the vast majority of curtain fabrics, by fusing a specially coated fire retardant poly cotton cloth to the back of your chosen fabric.
