(usually 20 percent) is required—and where that money will come from remains a question for the majority of today’s generation.

Lingering student loans, the continuing effects of the recession, and the large amounts of money required for down payments leave millennials trembling in their Toms. For many, thinking small means living large.

And the fantasy doesn’t exist solely in the minds of the younger generation. With nationally televised shows such as Tiny House Nation, Tiny House Hunters, and Tiny House Builders, tiny fever has spread. Tiny Houses are popping up all over the country, and, thanks to the Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE), a nonprofit organization creating economically diverse neighborhoods with houses fit for different wallet sizes, the Scenic City can finally celebrate a civic Tiny House of its own.

“CNE is now exploring alternative ways to create housing that people earning $11 an hour can afford,” said president and CEO Martina Guilfoil. “Building smaller homes are one of the best ways to meet that need.”

Although a 532-square-foot house might resemble a mansion compared to some of the homes showcased on television, the Ridgeland residence comes complete with everything desired when transitioning from large to small. The house is energy efficient, its aesthetic blends with the neighborhood, and Guilfoil believes that monthly expenses

will equal less than $650. Remember: That’s not paying rent. You’re paying that much so you can actually own a house.

With one seed a whole field shall sprout. Don’t think that the Ridgeland home will remain the sole city-approved Tiny House in Chattanooga.

The crew down at CNE plans on planting little homes all across the Gig City. Their notso-tiny houses grow to be about 800-1,300 square feet, and CNE plans on gardening nine of these two-bedroom affordable houses in Highland Park.

Hand Me Down My Bowling Shoes Millennial bowlers are putting their own spin on the sport

he thud of bowling balls and the clattering rumble of tumbling pins mixed with pop music pumped through overhead speakers.

It was Tuesday, Sept. 22, a week before bowling season was to start—and the East Hamilton Hurricanes and the Rhea County Eagles were scrimmaging.

In terms of team age, “We’re the newcomers on the block,” Coach Steve Williams of Rhea County High School said over the noise. His school started a bowling team three years ago. East Hamilton started theirs in 2014 after a couple of people kept bringing it up with the administration.

Bowling is changing. And the Millennial generation is the one making it happen. The number of people bowling in leagues is on the decline and bowling centers are closing. But people born between 1985 and 2005 are picking it up as a cheap night out on the town, a source of friendly competition, perhaps even a way to go pro.

Among the students scrimmaging at Pin Strikes in Chattanooga, Whitney Richardson (15 turning 16), team captain for the East Hamilton girls’ bowling team, also pitches softball, and she said launching a bowling ball has a similar motion. Shannon Wallmarker, also 15 turning 16, picked up the sport because her dad told her she needed a place to drive in order to get a car. It’s a sport that she can play with friends. “It’s not a kind of sport that takes away your sportsmanship when you lose,” she said.

Bowling’s Slow Roll Downhill Randall Lockhart, president of the Chattanooga Area Bowling Association (CABA) said, “I think it’s

declined in the last few years,” although, he adds, he now sees the sport beginning to make something of a comeback.

There aren’t as many leagues going on, and two bowling alleys in Chattanooga have closed their doors. Fort Lanes shut down between six and seven years ago and Tri-State Lanes closed three years ago.

But—“We have the high school leagues going on right now,” Lockhart said.

Indeed, among the Chattanooga-area schools Brainerd High School is also working on forming a bowling team. Bowling programs at the collegiate level, however, seem nonexistent. Neither Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Ga., or the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offer bowling programs. Caeser Wood, director of campus recreation at UTC, said the university had a bowling program three years ago but interest died out.

When it comes to 20-somethings bowling in an official league, Lockhart does not know of a Chattanooga-area league devoted just to that demographic.

That trend has been national up to now.

Terry Bigham, communications director for the U.S. Bowling Congress, says the organization governing the sport of bowling has seen a decline in membership. There were 493,000 members between the ages 21 to 40 in the 2011-12 season. There were 449,000 members in 2013-2014.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the number of bowling centers in the country has been in decline. In its twice-adecade economic census, the bureau reported that there were 5,590 bowling centers

in 1997. By 2012—its most recent measure—that number had fallen to 4,063.

“League bowling in general has seen about a 6 percent decline in the last few seasons, but we are seeing growth in youth, high school and collegiate programs,” Bigham wrote in an email.

Yet while the sport has seen an overall decline in participation, bowling has improved, according to Lockhart. He started bowling while he was still in the military 50 years ago and kept at it, attracted to “the competition of being able to do something right.” Meanwhile, lanes have become synthetic. The balls react better, “the pins, they’ve just improved everything so much,” he says.

Belly Up to the Bar, Bowlers Six months ago, Southside Social opened its doors along Chestnut Street in the shadow of Finley Stadium. Along with its supersized “adult jenga,” bocce ball and corn hole, the establishment also includes 10 bowling lanes.

“The bowling bar concept has really come about,” said Dustin Everett, operations manager of Southside Social.

Everett said Southside Social follows the bowling bar trend, similar to Pinewood Social in Nashville and The Painted Pin in Atlanta.

“Bowling used to be a lot bigger in Chattanooga,” said Susie Glandon, Southside’s bar manager.

But like pool, darts and corn hole, which was big on the bar scene a few years ago, bowling has become a bar game. Now, when Millennials bowl, Glandon sees some make drinking games out of the activity. For example, bowlers wagering a shot if they make a strike, “Just as they would any other bar game,” Glandon said.

When people strapped on bowling shoes every week, fierce competition was on their minds. “ ‘How much money can I win from these guys?’ people used to ask,” Rasmussen said.

Technically, Pin Strikes is a family entertainment center, offering bowling among other activities like laser tag. It’s a business model more lucrative and easier to run than an establishment that just offers bowling, according to Rasmussen.

“People born between 1985 and 2005 are picking it up as a cheap night out on the town, a source of friendly competition, perhaps even a way to go pro.”

Over at Pin Strikes on Perimeter Drive, General Manager John Rasmussen said older bowlers used to dominate the lanes. But 15 years ago, the older bowlers packed away the bowling balls and hung up the shoes, leaving room for younger people to pick up the sport. “Now they’re doing

“We don’t do anything for 55 and over,” he said. “We don’t market to

As the nights wear on, a different demographic walks through his doors: 18- to 35-year-olds.

Holiday Bowl Brainerd, which is making a name switch to “Spare Time” along with its sister establishment in Hixson, offers bowling and only bowling.

General Manager Blake Curtis said he has noticed more Millennials joining leagues, but there is a gap between bowling occasionally with friends and regularly bowling. “Most people are scared about joining a league,” Curtis said.

It’s why the bowling industry started the “8 For 8” program in which, for $8 a week, the bowling center invites people to bowl in mini-leagues for eight weeks to try out the sport.

At the end, the bowling alley gives participants a bowling ball drilled to their specific hand shape, the thinking being, “If you have a bowling ball, you’ll bowl more,” Curtis said.

Monday night is the busiest night for Spare Time, as that’s when it hosts the biggest bowling league in Chattanooga.

of a bunch of rednecks drinking beer and eating greasy hamburgers on a Friday night.

But bowl a lot of games and, as many people interviewed for this story said, you’ll feel the next day how much a sport bowling is. Curtis added that the Olympic committee is voting this year to include it as an Olympic sport.

“Bowling is a long-lost art in some people’s minds,” Curtis said.

Dreams of Going Pro Some Millennials want to take that long-lost art and see how far it will take them. Friends Scott Demirjian, 24, and Alex Lain, 25, first met on the Soddy Daisy High School bowling team. Recently, Lain said, they have talked about traveling around, entering tournaments, “getting back in the winner’s circle,” trying to break pro.

For now, they help run the bowling alley at Southside Social, booking games, renting out shoes.

“In the months Southside Social has been open, actor Elijah Wood, the members of Five Finger Death Punch, and the Dirty Heads have all bowled there.”

The two got into the sport differently. When Demirjian was 12 or so, he would watch his dad bowl over 200 at Holiday Bowl Brainerd. But when he picked up a bowling ball, “I realized pretty quickly that it’s not as easy as it looks,” Demirjian said.

At the beginning, he wanted to see if he could push the boundary to break his highest score. In the traditional sports, a coach will tell his or her players, “Do what I say and don’t ask questions.” But Millennials want to understand and then act because their questions are answered, Demirjian said. “We want to know why.”

school because he hung out with a family that “constantly bowled.” For him, the team aspect of the sport, the team riding on the number of pins he knocks down in a frame, “drew me in.”

The perception of bowling, Demirjian said, is that pro bowlers are out of shape. But athletes such as professional basketball player Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers have crossed sports into bowling.

And then there’s the new breed of professional bowler, someone like Jason Belmonte, who sends bowling balls zipping down the lane using two hands and no thumbhole drilled into

his balls.

There’s more athleticism. Still, bowlers can still bowl in their prime when they are 45, Demirjian said.

This is because bowling is a more mental than physical game.

“You gotta be in the moment,” Demirjian said about competing in tournaments. “[You] gotta forget what happen in the last frame or what happens in the next five minutes.”

After Demirjian and Lain bowled five to seven years, a light switched on. “There was one day you realized you could do this,” Lain said.

Demirjian bowls in a league Thursday nights and competes in two different tournament circuits. In the semi-pro tournament circuit, he’s near the cutline to making pro. In the meantime, “You gotta put yourself in that atmosphere,” he says, to get used to that kind of pressure.

As for the future? According to Demirjian, “There’s a beautiful part to not knowing.”

Another example: A study last year by researchers affiliated with the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living compared longtime yoga and meditation practitioners with control subjects of the same age and demographics. Specifically, the researchers were curious whether or not yoga and meditation would help maintain the ability to engage in abstract thinking— a function that notoriously declines with age.

Results indicated that long-term practice of yoga and meditation buffered against age-related decline.

These initial results indicate that a committed practice of meditation and yoga protects cognitive abilities well into older age.

Yoga and meditation are considered medicine in the East, and have long been believed to improve pain tolerance. In fact, seasoned yogis and meditators are known to tolerate pain twice as long as those who do not practice such techniques.

The same holds true for “related” holistic techniques, such as T’ai Chi, QiGong, Reiki, acupuncture and massage, some of which have been around for, literally, thousands of years.

These modalities work with the energy flow in each of us; indeed, the energy that flows in all living things, from the deer in the woods to the flowers in your garden, to Mama Earth her-

Breathe In, Breathe Out This Friday Chart-topping pop-rocker Mat Kearney at Track 29 There are two things I remember from the CD rack we had next to the stereo when I was a kid. One of them was Smash Mouth’s entire discography, and the other one was Mat Kearney’s Nothing Left to Lose.

Singles like “Breathe In Breathe Out” and “Closer to Love” were anthems for the mid-to-late 2000s, and Kearney was (and still is) one of the classic pop-rock dreamboats of that era.

Kearney released his fifth studio album Just Kids earlier this year, which made it into Billboard’s list of the top ten most popular digital albums in the U.S. after its release and the top 20 overall.

He also appeared on “The Today Show” in February to play “Billion,”

one of his latest singles.

This Friday, he’ll be here in Chattanooga at Track 29 as part of his Just Kids Tour promoting this year’s album. The Nashville-based artist will play a set made up of both old and new hits that are sure to please fans of all sorts.

Once Upon a Time in Chattanooga is rap that’s real...and very powerful

T

he Chattanooga music scene is undergoing a hip hop renaissance as artist after artist keeps turning out bigger and better projects and generally displaying a level of skill and professionalism one wouldn’t expect to find outside of a major metropolitan market. The latest addition to this expanding talent pool is Matt Solo, a hungry young artist set to take the community by storm.

Born Matthew William Long, Matt Solo first started rapping at age 12.

Within a year, he was writing his own material. Two more years would pass before the incident that convinced Matt to take his music, his life and his future seriously.

In September of 2003, Matt was struck by two bullets during an altercation at a party. The brush with death was a wake-up call. Solo plunged into his music with new purpose and determination, releasing his first album (Both $ides of Tha Dollar) a year later.

It was that album that established Solo in the local scene, leading to a string of other projects and a rap battle win/loss record of over 100 wins and, to date, ZERO losses. In 2014, Solo signed with Nino Villanova’s Whirl Records label. In September 2015, he released his ninth mixtape, the impeccable Once Upon a Time in Chattanooga.

There are 18 tracks on this album, and as of this writing it appears the first single will be “Im’a Need a Deal.”

Structurally the tune is reminiscent of mid-to-late ’90s rap, which was a great era for the genre in terms of airplay and

industry recognition. A simple, but effective beat and a bank of synth strings provide the backdrop for some ridiculously smooth rhymes.

Too often a young artist will compensate for a lack of experience (or anything relevant to say) by going hardcore lyrically, the idea being in their young and confused minds that crude and violent equals “real.” It is comparable to an amateur chef overseasoning a meal “because that’s how the pros do it,” when in fact pros are well-versed in balance and restraint in order to evoke the best possible flavor in the kitchen—or on the microphone.

Here again, Solo demonstrates that, young man or not, he has clearly put the time and effort in to his craft. His lyrics are powerful; he uses imagery and language with a deft touch and in doing so, he is as real as it gets.

Although not specifically given to me for review, the track titled “Lost”

is a personal favorite with its hypnotic instrumentation complementing the lyrical exploration of various kinds and levels of intoxication (which I suspect is a metaphor for the mindnumbing trials of life in general).

“Watery” is another outstanding track, showcasing Solo’s ability with the microphone. While not a “battle” tune, his delivery solidifies his reputation as an undefeated champion.

The take-away from the entire album is this: Matt Solo is a man with both the talent and the drive to achieve serious critical and commercial success. Whether that comes to pass next week, next month or next year, it will come to pass, and sooner rather than later.

Japanese Adrenaline, West African Homage Gagakirise and Eye electrify, Mdou Moctar offers Saharan guitar rock

his writer firmly believes that people are still trying to catch up with the Japanese band Boredoms, and out of a never-boring, three-decadelong career, the pinnacle is the absolutely mind-blowing late ’90s run, with the releases Super ae, Super Roots 7 and Vision Creation Newsun that flattened everything in their path with a sonic rocket-engine-powered steamroller of Krautrock-oncocaine locomotion and cosmic, brain-melting electronics.

neously primal and articulated, Boredoms created a transcendental elevation of rock music rarely heard, and listeners will still be trying to fully process this stuff years from now.

It’s clear that the Japanese duo Gagakirise is a fan of this music, and the twosome’s latest release is even a collaboration with Eye (a.k.a. Yamantaka Eye), the vocalist and front man of Boredoms who has been scarce in the last few years.

Gagakiriseye is a two-track single, and it offers a huge amount of raw energy and replay value, particularly with “The Flash”

which is like an adrenaline injection with machine-gun electric guitar notes and an everchanging structure, suggesting a concise version of prog-rock.

Eye begins singing with an odd faux operatic voice that cliff-dives and levitates into glissandos before unleashing his trademark, unmistakable controlled screaming. The ramping rhythmic intensity chugs with a Bonham/Dinger drum-buddy-lovechild then evolves into a hi-hat heavy chase scene until it can go no further, concluding abruptly amid a chaotic maelstrom of heavy pummeling.

“Robobird2” takes a different approach, with a serene beginning, unfurling glistening harmonics and electronic tones like a video-game version of a pastoral sunrise. Eye provides a vocal storm warning before the figurative dam bursts, spilling its unstoppable wave with alarm sirens, snare-drum rolls and drumbeat explosions.

In the aftermath, there’s the pitter-patter of guitar taps, suggesting the scurrying of animals scavenging after a disaster.

T

he film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai—translated as “Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It”—perhaps wins the award for “Clumsiest Syntax” because apparently, in the West African Tamasheq language, there is no word for “purple.”

Take one look at the soundtrack album cover, featuring the musician and star of the film Mdou Moctar, and it becomes even more clear that this is an homage to Prince’s Purple Rain. This new film—the first Tuareg feature film ever made, directed by Sahelsounds head honcho Christopher Kirkley— was structured as an adaptation of the original film, using improvised scenes with untrained actors on a limited budget.

While the film is an adaptation, the soundtrack album is not. It sounds nothing like Prince. It should be, however, immediately appealing to fans of Saharan guitar rock, such as that from other musicians from Agadez in the nation of Niger, including Bombino and Group Inerane.

stuff, with the most prominent feature being fluid electric guitar lines from Moctar that are hardedged and piercing; there’s the bite and snarl of distortion but with clarity, so that it’s not possible to gloss over notes like an amateur might, with occasional tremolo or phaser guitar effects for a hint of psychedelic rock.

The driving momentum of the drum patterns places an emphasis on certain beats in a way that isn’t expected in, say, a typical American rock song, and the passionate singing adds to the enveloping soundstream, often using limber 6/8 time signatures to propel the proceedings.

Moctar mixes up the song textures, sometimes using hand drums and acoustic guitars, like on numbers like “Tahoultine,” which takes a less aggressive approach but is no less enthralling.

While the film’s Purple Rainobsessed theme is gaining attention, it shouldn’t overshadow the music; similarly, this writer believes that few would argue against the Purple Rain soundtrack having much more enduring significance than the film.

lying over a corn maze in a tiny airplane at over a thousand feet brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “the big picture.”

From the air, the River Maze out on the banks of the Ocoee is a lovingly crafted tribute to Tennessee’s rich history and the Cherokee Native Americans who lived in the area. Historical figures stand out proud among the corn, along with the intricate rivers that run through Tennessee. It is carved without the aid of a GPS; a tractor and a floor plan are the only tools used to create the sharp turns and winding pathways of the maze’s interior.

The smaller soy maze features “the three sisters,” the Cherokee concept of the trio of crops planted together to ensure the health of both the plants and the land. Together, the mazes continue the River Maze tradition of honoring

area histories and traditions.

At ground level, the maze is a full day of family fun. A petting zoo, a jump pad, and a “super slide” are perfect activities for kids, while Spookley the Square Pumpkin and a “cow train” led by a trusty old tractor can keep the littlest ones happy. If the corn maze is too daunting, special smaller mazes are an alternative that even feature trivia “passports,” giving hints to help kids complete the maze in record time. The pumpkin patch rounds out the kind of fall experience you can only get on a family farm.

From Haunted Cavern to Mad House

t all started with an assignment, some serious obsessing, and then…the promise of pizza. I had survived 23 years without ever stepping foot into a haunted house, and that era was coming to a close as I received word that I, an intern whose worst fears had been realized, must enter Ruby Falls Haunted Cavern.

Anticipating that evening for days, I moaned my trepidations to my fiancé only to hear in return, “How old are you…?” It doesn’t matter how old you are when you’re a scaredy cat! Knowing what might await me 260 feet below ground was enough to make me panic, profusely. Adrenaline coursed as I waited in line opening night.

I prepared myself to board the red-glowing elevator, palms sweating. Below my feet were supernatural entities beyond my wildest imagination, preparing to prey on my weak frame like starved vultures. Repeating my “do it for the pizza” mantra for the thousandth time, I stepped into the

see. I kept my eyes forward. “Remember the pizza.”

When a military man hurried our group out of the monster-infested caverns and into the crisp night air, I felt I was finally safe. But… We were ushered onto a van, which returned us up top to enter The Mad House, a look inside the head of notorious mass murderer Eugene Todd.

Thanks to a machine created by his psychiatrist, Dr. Rousseau, we were able to experience the different personalities on which Todd blamed his murders. Charred bodies, clowns, big boys in pig masks, playing hide and seek with psychopaths, it’s all part of the “fun’” that comes with a trip into The Mad House.

Being hunted in damp caverns was enough, but finding my way in a chicken-wire maze through the sick and twisted mind of Eugene Todd was the macabre cherry on top of a fantastically frightening evening.

There are so many good people all around you.”— Paul Moore You may have heard about the 36-year-old father, Paul Moore, from Farmington, Utah, who found that what he thought were pulled muscles on the upper half of his body were actually around 40 tumors, including some on his skull.

Since his diagnosis, Moore has had six surgeries that include an entire hip replacement, along with radiation. He walks with a cane because the doctors say his hip could break at any moment from pressure.

In August, Moore was told he only had two months to live. But he refuses to let that news shake him. He says that while he thinks about death, he isn’t frightened of it. Instead, he stresses the importance of staying positive.

Stone admits to feeling a bit evangelical about the possibilities of Gig connectivity for his industry.

Sure, the film industry itself is heavily concentrated in California, but ultra-fast connectivity combined with lower cost of living in Chattanooga could make the difference between life and death for a film company.

One of the best specialeffects companies in the world recently went out of business, he says, because the cost of doing the work is so high and pressures to keep their fees down are so great that they couldn’t make any money.

“There’s no reason we couldn’t have special-effects houses from L.A. move here where their people could have a better quality of life for much cheaper and they could do Hollywood work and send footage back and forth all day,” says Stone.

OK—but are the Capture films any good?

Making a film in 48 hours may sound like a creative fire drill, but the resulting films are sometimes amaz-

ing. They occupy a weirdly compelling territory that combines just about every look and feel you could imagine in the source footage—lyrical virtuosity and homey authenticity, conventional and cutting edge, natural beauty and harsh concrete, drone-shot aerial footage and smart phone in the backyard.

And because this year’s filmmakers had to use both Kansas City and Chattanooga footage, that eliminated any “promotional film” feeling that sometimes crept into the first two years’ work.

“The interesting thing about Capture is watching what different editors do with same footage,” says Stone. Many of the same images are seen in different film, creating a strange sense of familiarity, even when the films are very different.

The winning film, from a Kansas City team, has a lyrical feel, with a wordless sound track. One Chattanooga film used poetic spoken word as a key part of the sound, taking the final piece a more narrative direction. The other Chattanooga film dove deep into narrative, relying on a shooter that had used actors and staged a scripted framing sequence with an astronaut from Chattanooga and mission controller in Kansas City.

or the past three decades, the Shaking Ray Levi Society (SRLS) has been a major driving force for the arts in Chattanooga. This month, the UTC Art Department and the SLRS will be presenting a “30-Year Retrospective Exhibit” at the Apothecary. The show will be an opportunity to catch a glimpse of exclusive archival materials, including poster art, audio, and video that has never been released to the public.

It’s no cosmic coincidence the 30th anniversary of the Shaking Ray Levi Society falls on what would be its artistic director and founder Dennis Palmer’s 58th birthday, Oct 13, 2015.”

Fans of the radio program “Outside Pleasures,” which aired on WUTC in the ’80s and ’90s will be able to enjoy audio from the broadcasts. Rare footage from various events, including the Shaking Ray Levi Festival at the Hunter Museum in 1993, will be viewable for the first time. The event is the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the history of this remarkable organization.

Founded in 1985 by Dennis Palmer, Julian Norwood, Terry Fugate, Craig Phillips and Bob Stagner, the SLRS was formed as a response to a need for more adventurous art within the community.

The 1980s saw the beginnings of Chattanooga’s transformation from a dirty industrial center into one of America’s premiere cities. The Shaking Rays have been a part of this transformation from day one, and they are best known for their critically acclaimed performance series.

The SRLS’s mission is to support innovation and creativity, providing the city with creative collaborations, community outreach programs, educational workshops, and live performances. It’s dedicated to bringing next-level music, film, and performance art to the area, and does this by sponsoring unique shows from nationally and internation-

SRLS has co-produced a number of film projects. It nurtures creativity throughout the area with unique workshops, and a partnership with The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP) allows it to reach out to those with developmental and physical disabilities, including recovering stroke and accident patients and autistic children.

In addition to being an exhibition, this 30-year retrospective is a celebration of what the founders of the Society have created. Booking shows that are ahead of the curve, the Society has presented numerous prominent people to local audiences years before they found wider success. Some examples of this are writer David Sedaris and indie-rock bands Of Montreal and Cat Power. A few of the well-established artists brought to town are Reverend Howard Finster, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Tony Oxley, J.D. Parran, Foday Mussa Suso, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Olivia Tremor Control, and Derek Bailey.

The SRLS’s wide range of activities are driven by the idea that art is always growing, changing, and evolving. Members believe that some of the most vital art today is found outside of the mainstream. The Society’s purpose is not to stand apart as outsiders, but to instead bring a fascinating outside world into the community.

One of its emphases is on using improvisation, both in dance and music, as a tool to unlock creative potential.

They often spotlight free improv, a process by which a musician or dancer is able to be spontaneously inventive in an environment that is receptive and positive. By engaging the community, provoking interest, and inviting curious minds to experience something new, the Society enhances and stimulates creative culture.

The SRLS supports local artists by seeking out and encouraging homegrown talent. Under its creative umbrella, innovative projects are given the opportunity to come to fruition.

The Frightening Ass Film Festival returns for year five of spookiness

ctober is a month of promise. Even when you’re older, and wandering the neighborhood in a mask asking for handouts in exchange for not vandalizing property is largely frowned upon, there is always a certain excitement that builds as Oct. 31 approaches.

Rounding out the features is ‘Deathgasm,’ a film about metalheads fighting demons that appears to be a cross between ‘This is Spinal Tap’ and ‘Evil Dead.’”

Part of it may be the change in the season. Crisp air, falling leaves, magnificent colors, dramatic skylines, and wistful remembrances of a fading year affect us all in some way. Part of it may be that Halloween represents the childhood adrenaline rush of fear of all things that go bump in the night. But mostly—it’s the candy.

The aisles are just packed with orange-and-black packages of nougat-y chocolate, candy corn, or something that vaguely resembles marshmallow.

The best part of being an adult is that no one gets to set your candy budget or ration your intake. If you want to develop diabetes in a four-week period, so be it. Some holidays just never lose their appeal; they are too intrinsically linked to our childhood. Age only enhances the nostalgia.

This year represents the best kind of Halloween. It happens to fall on a Saturday. Anyone that is so inclined can spend an entire day celebrating the darker side of humanity. Facilitating that inclination is Mise En Scenesters and the Chattanooga Film Festival with year five of the Frightening Ass Film Festival, graciously hosted by the Ma-

jestic 12. In what has become one of the most exciting Halloween traditions in Chattanooga, the FAFF has expanded this year to include six fulllength feature films, a shorts block by local Chattanooga filmmakers, special guest intros by filmmaking Jeff Burr and festival friends Bleeding Skull, an after-party/costume party hosted

by The Coin Op, with musical guests Kindora and Rock Floyd, and a special Halloween edition of Startling Ass Stand-Up comedy. From 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., there will be something scary happening downtown and it’s absolutely not to be missed.

As always, there are choices to be made if you don’t have time to spend the entire day in a dark theater (although I can’t understand why you would want to do anything else). I have a few recommendations, but the full schedule can be found on the FAFF Facebook page.

I will say that it is absolutely imperative that you don’t miss the first few hours of the FAFF. Starting at 11 a.m. you can see an hour of shorts by local filmmakers. Chattanooga has a wealth of filmmakers who need and deserve our support. The FAFF is a perfect vehicle to showcase local talent.

At 12:15 p.m., you have the opportunity to witness the first feature film, “From a Whisper to a Scream,” which is a classic in underground horror. It has the distinction of being Vincent Price’s last horror film and is likely the lowest-budget film in which he ever appeared. On hand to do a Q & A about the film is filmmaker Jeff

Burr, who can likely answer burning questions about just how he managed to secure such a legendary figure for his film, particularly after Price had sought to distance himself from the genre.

The film itself is an anthology of four separate stories set in the fictional town of Oldfield, TN, a place fraught with violence and evil. A bigscreen viewing of “From a Whisper to a Scream” is a rarity—that Chattanooga is home to one is nothing short of incredible.

If you can’t quite make the early shows, starting at 4 p.m. is a Sundance selection/creature feature called “The Hollow.” This is a film about dangerous sprites that live in the woods (what other kind of sprites are there and where else would they live?).

There is nothing better for Halloween than a good monster movie. This one has everything a person could hope for—dark, secluded locations, creepy locals, and flaming farm equipment.

It certainly seems to be worth a look.

Rounding out the features at 9:15 p.m. is “Deathgasm,” a film about metalheads fighting demons that appears to be a cross between “This is Spinal Tap” and “Evil Dead.” Of all the FAFF features this year, “Deathgasm” is one that I wouldn’t miss.

Comedy and horror are like peanut butter and chocolate. They are just better together.

Without a doubt, the Frightening Ass Film Festival is the best place to be in Chattanooga on Halloween. No other event comes close.

The Tale Of The Obesity Spoon Officer Alex offers his advice on reducing gun violence

When officer Alexander D. Teach is not patrolling our fair city on the heels of the criminal element, he spends his spare time volunteering for the Boehm Birth Defects Center.

In an effort to join the President, among others, I don’t want to let a good tragedy go to waste, so I’ll get on the bandwagon as well.

“GUNS!” Let’s talk about them.

Three hundred million/300,000,000. What an insurmountable number when you see it written out like that. That’s roughly the ALEX population of the United States, and it’s also the estimated number of guns circulating in this country (two thirds being rifles, the final third being handguns).

Take that staggeringly large number, and then factor it into some staggeringly small ones (proportionately): • Twenty-seven. The number of people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary (Twenty being children).

• Twelve. The number of people murdered in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater.

• Nine. The number of those gunned down at a historic African American

church in Charleston, South Carolina.

And yet despite events like these in recent times, support for gun ownership is actually up in the U.S. (according to Pew Research). Why do you think that is?

Personally, I can’t help but think it’s simply a proportional response to a grave threat or threats and as such people are deTEACH termined to defend themselves because they feel more afraid of being killed by “a madman” than by “their own gun.” This makes sense to me whether or not I agree with it, but it does not make sense to those who are so fiercely determined to blame the spoon for chronic obesity among children in the U.S. Again, it comes back to numbers. room. Did I see just that cup shake, though…?

No. I didn’t. Any more than I see the spoon killing children with heart disease, or blame the automobile for being the real killer here (traffic accidents), or blaming alcohol itself for causing “drunks.”

No. Having more gun laws to make things “more illegal” is not successful. As it turns out, it’s already illegal to murder someone. It’s also already illegal to discharge a firearm during the commission of a felony…or even for a convicted felon (or domestic abuser) to possess one.

The popular answer continues to be legislating the only ones who are not breaking the law because that’s what politicians often do when people cast their gaze upon them from the scene of a real tragedy and ask for a solution. It’s called “pandering.”

Making the owner of a gun 1,000 times more culpable for the havoc wrought by their own firearm should it escape their grasp? That’s an idea.

Graduated licensing for firearms ownership? Not a lot of downsides are glaring back at me. Reciprocity of carry permits nationally? Hmmm…

Look at that—three possible ways to reduce gun violence without making some-

thing “more illegal” than it already was. Boggles the mind, doesn’t it?

The Navy guy who was packing heat on the scene of the recent Oregon shootings but did not engage? Unlike legislators, that was the right thing to do depending on your preference.

The Army guy packing a concealed weapon who took seven bullets as he charged the shooter? Unlike legislators, that was also the right thing for you to do, depending on your needs and wants.

Absolute polar opposites but situational.

Our situation is equally gray as far as our course of action goes, but the one thing it doesn’t need is more rules for the people following rules.

We need to attack the threat, not the only ones not posing one. Attack the suppliers— attack accountability, the very thing we are avoiding in an effort to appear “strong” while doing absolutely nothing. And if you don’t want guns sold to “crazy people” (the ones killing folks, not the guns), then you’d best be prepared to finally label someone as such.

Real problems demand real solutions. After all this, are we still insisting murder isn’t “illegal enough?”
