Message from Our Coordinator
Welcome to Liberty Adult Education (LAE)
It’s a new school year and time to rejuvenate yourself! Liberty Adult Education (LAE) proudly presents our Summer/Fall Catalog. Our new catalog is packed with educational opportunities to advance your education and enrich your life. LAE believes that our programs must be of the highest quality and our curriculum must be relevant and organized to meet your needs. Our purpose is to serve our communities as a center for lifelong learning. LAE provides opportunities for adults of all ages to achieve their educational, employment, community, and personal goals. How do we evaluate our program for quality satisfaction? Currently, we are in the process of studying our organizational effectiveness through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation process. This process is focused around a self-study conducted by the Adult School’s personnel that will result in an extensive written report of our accomplishments and areas that can be further developed. We value and depend on the opinions and suggestions of students and community members. We invite you to become involved in our self-study by filling out the brief community survey. If you would like to be a part of our self-study or share your thoughts, please contact Debbie Norgaard at 925-634-2565 ext. 1073. As always, we look forward to seeing you on campus!

Portraits of Success Shonice Brooks: I attended classes at Liberty Adult Education in the FOCUS Program. I felt like a middle schooler just learning math for the first time. I have accomplished learning math all over again. The FOCUS program has given me a second chance, teaching me things that I have forgotten since graduating from High School. I’ve been able to use the skills I learned at school on a daily basis with my child, and I did not think I would need them in my adult life. I’m glad I came to this program, I have enjoyed the people in class and the teachers. I would recommend this program to anyone in need of updating skills, and I really appreciate the resources given to me. My teacher and the staff have been very supportive and indeed made an impact on my life, thank you! I got a job!

Shannon Shaw: I want to thank you so much for the opportunity to take the Adult High School Diploma Program at Liberty Adult Education. It has been over 20 years since I was supposed to graduate High School, I thought I would never complete it. After looking into your program I decided I wanted to get my High School Diploma, and not GED. I made a promise to myself that I would give it my all and get through the classes as quickly as possible. I did not tell my family I was taking classes, I am looking forward to surprising my husband, children, and my mother who have given up pushing me to get my GED. I have watched all three of my kid’s graduate high school and go off to college and decided this was my time. Edgenuity has been a great program to allow me to work at my own pace. I have been able to dedicate many hours and get through classes quickly to reach my goal. The material is taught well by the on-line instructors and the tests have always related to the course work taught. I have learned things working in the business world that helped me in these classes that I did not even realize would carry over. The staff has been great to add my next class quickly so I did not have a lot of down time with nothing to work on. Overall this has been a great experience and I am so grateful for the program. The Edgenuity class program WORKS! I am excited to say I am currently enrolled in college working towards my Business Administration Degree!

Anabela Viralhadas: I’m Portuguese and started attending LAE in January 2019. I originally signed up to take the Acrylic painting class. The wonderful lady in the Office told me about the GED program. I did not know about the GED classes so I decided to enroll, hoping I could get through it with all my language barriers. My teachers Sheri and Pam really encouraged me, they let me know I could get all the help I needed. I started with my math exam, I was so inspired that I took an exam every two weeks. I have just received my GED Diploma. My kids and husband are so proud of me. My next step is to complete the Microsoft Azure Cloud exams so I can become an Engineer at Microsoft Corporation. I recommend if you are thinking about getting your GED, just come to LAE and get ready for a new beginning. Don’t delay, because maybe in three months you will have your GED too, you never know.
PORTRAITS OF SUCCESS
Kristine McGuinness: I was very hesitant about going back to school. I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to fail or succeed. The entire staff at LAE was very supportive, and offered many words of encouragement. I started taking a couple of the computer classes and found out that it was easy. I just continued to take one class right after another. With each class that I took, I became more confident and pushed myself to succeed. I have learned so much in the time that I have been here, and it has motivated me to enroll in some classes at the local community college to further my education in the accounting field. I wanted to give a special thanks to Cheryl, Sheri, Pam, and Fina for all of your help and patience. I could not have done it without all of you!
Irma Garcia: I came to study English as a Second Language at school because I had trouble understanding my children. I thought, I would look for a job first, then go to school. I applied for a job and got it. In the interview, I realized I did not understand many words. That’s why I left the interview and signed up for school. People told me I was too old to go to school, I would not learn anything. I told them that a word a day could make a big difference. I did not think I was learning but, one day at work I had problems with the computer. The owner asked me about it and without thinking, I explained everything to him in English! I could not believe it! He looked at me and said he was surprised because everything I said was in English and he told me to keep learning. I now understand what my children are saying and when they say something inappropriate they can’t tell me something different. It’s hard to come to school but it’s worth it. As I say a word a day, I’m forming my future. Jayde Mays: I am a student in the FOCUS program. Since being in this program I have been given the tools and support that have helped me progress in my life. While attending class, I’ve had help with improving my math skills as well as typing which are vital to getting a job. Liberty Adult Ed has some of the greatest resources available, and the sweetest employees. All staff members were great, however two made the greatest impact on my life. Marianne Partain has been very supportive and helped me in class. Alys Sadler in the Career Center has changed my life forever, she has gone above and beyond in helping me find all the information I need to start my educational journey to become a licensed Esthetician. She did not stop there, she helped me update my resume, and coached me on how to successfully interview for a job. Alys and Bertha in the Career Center found a job opening for me and with my new skills and tools, I Got a Job! Renee Tennison: After receiving the Liberty Adult Education brochure in the mail I would read the success stories. I often dreamed of what my story would be if I attended classes there. I was always terrified to start something new. I took the first step and called the school and set up an appointment with Debbie Norgaard and enrolled in the Medical Receptionist program. I have been off of work for over 15 years due to an illness, but I’ve always wanted to work in the medical field. LAE not only helped me gain confidence in myself and my skills, but I met some really great people that I have established friendships with. The staff (Pam, Fina, Sheri, Alys, and Cheryl) are very patient with you and always helpful. I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue and the staff here worked with me and made sure that I finished my program. Every time I passed a class, my chest swelled with pride. I was one step closer to achieving my goals. LAE is a great place to start a new career with hands on experience. It is never too late to start something new! I’m 51 years old and starting the 2nd half of my life. I can honestly say that I’m ready for my next journey! I’m very proud of my accomplishments! Thank you LAE for everything and my new found confidence.
