Oakley school superintendent resigns by Ruth Roberts
“ The board understands that there
Staff Writer Pam Conklin, superintendent of the Oakley Union Elementary School District (OUESD), has resigned from her position just 10 months into a threeyear contract with the district. The news came following a closed-session meeting with the school board on Friday, May 7. Conklin, 53, was placed on immediate, paid, administrative leave following the closed session, with her resignation effective July 1. Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Anne Allen will serve as interim superintendent while the board searches for Conklin’s replacement. The reason for Conklin’s abrupt exit was not addressed in an announcement from the board of trustees on Tuesday. “The board understands that there may be some uneasiness around the sudden departure of Pam Conklin,” read the statement. “However, we have the utmost confidence in Anne Allen and the rest of the administrative team and know that the district will move in a positive direction as the school year comes to an end. We are so fortunate in Oakley to have schools full of wonderful teachers and staff and know that our students will continue to receive the best education possible. We have been working very hard, and we are keeping the bests interests of the district at the forefront of every decision that we make.” Conklin’s severance package includes a 12-month buyout of $180,000 – per the original terms of her contract – as well as health benefits for 12 months or until she finds other employment where benefits are offered. Allen will receive her current salary of $185,146.23

PAM CONKLIN during her interim role as superintendent. The OUESD is currently in contract negotiations with the teachers unions and, should the district staff
receive an increase in salary or benefits for the 20152016 school year. Under the terms of her resignation agreement, Conklin will be entitled to the same increase as district employees. In an email to The Press this week, Conklin expressed her gratitude for her time in Oakley. “It was an honor to serve the staff and students of the Oakley Union Elementary School District,” wrote Conklin. “Oakley is a great community to raise kids, and the school staffs work hard every day to give kids the best possible opportunities for the future. I know the staff will continue to work everyday on behalf of the kids; they deserve it. I wish nothing but continued success for the district.” Conklin came from the Novato Unified School District, where she served as an elementary- and middle-school teacher, dean of students and principal at both the elementary- and middle-school levels, before taking her latest job as assistant superintendent of human resources.
