Lifestyle BEST Place to Show a Visitor
Big Break Regional Shoreline
Oakley’s Big Break Regional Shoreline has long been a popular spot with locals and visitors alike, and 2026 proved no exception. The protected estuary won gold in three categories: Best Place to Show a Visitor, Best Place to Walk a Dog and Best View in Town. Supervising Naturalist Wyatt Moore said the staff at Big Break work hard to maintain both the park and visitor center. “Our whole job here is to provide a safe place for people to visit the park and connect to the outdoors,” Moore said. “Whether that’s through walking or fishing or kayaking, we just want people to feel comfortable coming here, learning, growing and connecting to the park.” The visitor center hosts free activities for all ages and houses hands-on educational tools illustrating how local plants and animals use the park. While some species use it as a stopping point during their migrations, others live there year-round, including river otters, beavers and turtles. One new program is Sip n’ Stroll, geared toward adults. Held in the evenings on the third Thursday of each month, Sip n’ Stroll focuses on a native plant or locally grown crop. The evening is built around the plant theme, with a science table, activities, a walk and mocktails. Big Break is part of the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). At one time, the land was part of an asparagus farm, and visitors can still see asparagus plants sprouting all over the park amongst native flora.

Best place to show a visitor, Best place to walk a dog, Best view in town: Big Break lies in the zone where salty seawater meets snowmelt runoff from the Sierra Nevada, creating a unique habitat supporting over 70 species of birds and mammals. On a clear day, the Sierra Nevada are visible across the central valley to the east, and marine traffic can be seen traveling the San Joaquin River to the north. “The views are pretty special and you can get a lot of diversity of views,” Moore said. “As you walk toward the pier, when you look back toward the visitor center, you see a great view of Mt. Diablo, and this east side is so dramatic … you also have this incredible view of the water and the submerged farmland and you can see how the delta opens up and where the San Joaquín flows through and the Montezuma Hills with the renewable energy windmills so it’s a really cool mosaic of nature and human-built infrastructure and shows how we rely on the Delta.” Moore noted leashed dogs are allowed in the park on paved paths and some trails. Dogs are not allowed on the pier, or the levy top trail, which passes through critical habitat areas. The park’s Big Break Trail extends 2.5 miles to the Marsh Creek Trail and is a popular option for many walkers, both with and without dogs. A little brick building at 3530 Main St. known as the Bistro is a returning favorite for the “best historical building” category. Though it now houses a café known as Punahele Tonnelier serving American fare with French and Hawaiian influences, that is a fairly recent development in the building’s history. Resident Juli Del Barba-Favalora is a fourth-generation Oakley resident and said her great-grandfather bought the lot with a twostory building in 1910 to open a mercantile store.
“Then a fire swept through downtown Oakley in 1924 and burned that down, so they rebuilt in brick,” Barba-Favalora said. In 2016, Barba-Favalora renovated the building as part of Oakley’s downtown revitalization, cutting the front half off and moving it to the back to make room for the city’s road-widening project. “We tried to keep it as it originally looked, we salvaged all the brick from the front and used it in the back,” Barba-Favalora said. Many of the original materials from the front half were reused, including old tin ceiling tiles that now appear in the archways on the exterior and as décor on the interior. They also installed the original windows on the wall separating the kitchen and dining areas. “I think it’s just incredible that we were able to save the building and try to retain some of Oakley’s original character,” Barba-Favalora said. “I’m proud about that.”

Oakley Shops at Laurel Fields
Oakley’s favorite new place to shop is the Oakley Shops at Laurel Fields, a new shopping center with over 78,000 square feet of retail space. Construction began on the project in the summer of 2024, and the first shops opened in the fall of 2025. Danielle Navarro, Oakley’s assistant city manager, said the centerpiece of the plaza is the “long awaited” Safeway. The shops are adjacent to the Laurel Ball Fields and are home to a variety of businesses, including a Sourdough & Co., Starbucks, Chase Bank, a dog grooming shop and a martial arts academy.

Friends of the Oakley Library Oakley residents wanted to recognize the work of Friends of the Oakley Library (FOL), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Oakley Library through financial, material, and volunteer contributions. “We help the library fulfill its vital mission: enriching the lives of Oakley’s diverse community by bringing people and ideas together,” said club president Lorena Campos. Since 2021, Campos said FOL has focused its energy on fundraising for a new library and community center, and has raised over $1 million. She said the entire group of volunteers is driven by a love for the library, learning and community connection. “We want to ensure that all of our neighbors have the opportunity to find joy in learning, whether that’s through books, local programming, or digital resources,” she added. FOL is open to donations of time or money to support their goals, and the group is preparing for its annual fundraiser, the FOL Book Sale Oct. 2 and 3. Established in 2019, the club boasts 25 active members

doing their best to live out Rotary’s motto of “service before self.” The Rotary Club is a returning favorite in this category and President Mike Hale said the club’s impact is the reason why. “We’ve generated over $90,000 this year and served hundreds of residents,” he said. Annual Rotary programs include Christmas gift baskets and holiday meals, passing out dictionaries for local third graders, a barbecue lunch for Freedom High School staff, roadside clean-ups and a fundraising partnership with the Friends of the Oakley Library. He said the group aims to complete

a service project each month, though some run year-round. One ongoing project is the club’s work with Interact, a youth service club based at Freedom High School. Another is the Home Team, a group of Rotary volunteers whole help local seniors with light jobs around the house, including hanging window treatments or pictures, replacing lights or fixing small problems. “On an international level, we also raise money to eradicate polio,” Hale added. For this category, Oakley residents brought back another favorite: Perfect Star Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical. Owner Chris Donzelli said East County makes up a large portion of his business, and he’s happy to give back to the community. “We do a lot of different community outreach,” Donzelli said. “But the main project we do each year is Feel the Love. We work with Lennox, one of our distributors, and we give a free system to a local hometown hero or someone in need of an HVAC system.” As part of the project, Perfect Star’s team goes to the home of the beneficiary and installs the new system for free.
This summer, the company also donated $10 from every tuneup service to local nonprofit Some Gave All – the Joey Graves Foundation, a charity dedicated to honoring fallen soldiers and supporting military families. Perfect Star also collaborates with local Rotary clubs, and participates in local events. “We also do outreach with the (Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano County), and Joy Bound for pets,” Donzelli said. “Our team really supports our business initiative which is to give back to the communities we live in. Nunn-Wilson Family Park
For Best Park, Oakley’s voters chose Nunn-Wilson Family Park, at 100 Oxford Drive. Built in 2008, this features an adult fitness area, basketball court, barbecues, covered picnic tables, restrooms, a grass area, a playground, a dog park and a water feature. “Nunn-Wilson Family Park is one of Oakley’s most popular parks,” said Assistant City Manager Danielle Navarro. “The park is unique because it offers multiple recreational areas in one location.” Navarro noted the landscaping was designed to reflect Oakley’s agricultural heritage with a cherry orchard theme, and the basin slopes were extensively landscaped with numerous trees, native mow-free grasses, and shrubs. Navarro said the city works to maintain the park in excellent condition through continuing improvements and maintenance. Recent enhancements include the installation of additional shade sails throughout Koda Dog Park and annual turf renovations to keep the heavily used lawn areas in top condition. “Looking ahead, we are planning upgrades to the splash pad system,” Navarro said. “The current splash pad was installed in 2008 and, while it continues to operate well, it utilizes an older system that will eventually need modernization.” For more information, visit www.oakleyca.gov.,
