As of late March 2026, the national average gas price in the United States was $3.98 per gallon, with prices in many parts of the Bay Area topping $6 per gallon.

When gas prices rise due to various factors, drivers are increasingly interested in ways to conserve fuel and stretch their dollars further. Here are some ways to reduce the impact of rising gas prices.

Skip the premium fuel Unless a vehicle owner’s manual specifically recommends filling up with premium fuel, drivers will not see an increase in performance by choosing this more expensive option, according to Progressive Insurance. A person will just be paying more for premium, which is always more expensive than standard 87-octane fuel.

How to take care of your tires in the rainy season SEAN TONGSON

ires represent one of the most critical and important parts of any vehicle. But if tires are not properly maintained, it could lead to

potentially dangerous situations. Tire maintenance, however, can be easy to overlook, according to the U.S. Tire Manufacturer’s Association (USTMA) and local experts.

“Tires should be changed when they are worn out,” said Tyler Smith, manager of Les Schwab Tire Center in Brentwood.

“There is no industry standard regarding time, but we look at condition and tread depth. Tires should be changed once they reach 4/32 of tread depth for optimal performance and traction.” An easier way to determine that is to stick a penny in the treat. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head, the tread is too low and the tires need to be replaced. If you can’t see much of Lincoln’s head, the tread is fine.

Smith added that as tires age, they can develop issues like ozone cracking, so it is recommended to replace them before it is too late. Smith also stressed the importance of rotating tires to extend their lives.

“Front tires will wear the edges, and rear tires will wear the center tread,” Smith said. “Rotating tires evens the tread wear and helps the tires last longer.”

The top four ways to maintain tires, according to the USTMA, include: Tire pressure: It should be checked at least once a month or before a long road trip, along with the spare tire as well.

Experts recommend taking a few minutes each month to visually inspect tires for uneven wear, high and low areas, unusually smooth areas and other signs of damage.

Under-inflated tires can generate excessive heat build-up and stress, while over-inflated tires are susceptible to damage or being punctured when hitting an obstacle, such as a pothole.

Tire gauges can be used to check inflation pressure, measured in PSI (pounds per square inch). Recommended tire pressure for a vehicle can be found on a label on the driver’s door or in the vehicle owner’s manual.

Tread: Keeping an eye on the treads ensures vehicles have the necessary grip on the road, especially in poor weather.

Experts recommend taking a few minutes each month to visually inspect tires for uneven wear, high and low areas, unusually smooth areas and other signs of damage.

Rotation: Regular tire rotation helps tires to wear evenly,

extending their useful life. Tires must be rotated based on the recommendations in the vehicle’s owner’s manual to prevent irregular tire wear. If no rotation period is specified, USTMA recommends every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. After rotating, experts recommend ensuring the inflation pressure is set to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Alignment: Misaligned tires can lead to uneven, rapid tread wear and should be corrected by a tire dealer. Tire alignment should be checked periodically or if there is any indication of trouble, including “pulling” where a car drifts to one side.

Tire alignment problems may be caused by striking a pothole or other road hazards.

Drowsy driving poses a notable threat to drivers, their passengers and their fellow motorists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving contributed to 633 deaths in 2023. The NHTSA notes drowsy driving accidents often involve only a single driver who runs off the road at a high rate of speed with no evidence of braking. But vacationers may fit that mold, too, particularly if they awake early to start a road trip and/or if they drive late into the night while passengers are asleep.

Though it’s tempting to drive as long as possible when taking a driving vacation, it’s important that drivers learn to spot the warning signs of drowsy driving and get out from behind the wheel when such indicators appear.

The National Sleep Foundation notes the following are some signs of drowsy driving. ♦ Difficulty focusing on the road. The difficulty with focus may be accompanied or worsened by frequent blinking or heavy eyelids. ♦ Some drowsy drivers find themselves starting to daydream while behind the wheel.

The NHTSA notes most crashes involving drowsy driving occur between midnight and 6 a.m. Missing traffic signs during these times of day, when other drivers may have reduced visibility due to lack of daylight, can increase accident risk significantly. ♦ Yawning repeatedly or rubbing your eyes. These are telltale indicators that a driver is too tired to stay behind the wheel. ♦ Finding it hard to keep your head up or nodding off. ♦ Drifting from your lane, tailgating vehicles in front of you, or hitting a shoulder rumble strip. ♦ Feeling restless and irritable, or becoming aggravated with common annoyances such as sitting in traffic.

The NHTSA urges anyone embarking on a long road trip to get a good night’s sleep the night before the trip begins. It’s also important that drivers taking prescription medications read the prescription packet to determine if the medicine could make them drowsy. If so, it might be best to let others drive.

Drivers who begin to feel drowsy should let others who are alert get behind the wheel.

If signs of drowsy driving appear when driving alone, the NHTSA urges drivers to pull over and take a 20-minute nap in a safe place, such as a well-lit designated rest stop.

What to do and not to do after a car accident SEAN TONGSON

ar accidents happen even to cautious drivers. Despite causing shock, trauma, and anxi-

ety, there are still certain steps to take to ensure safety for all parties involved, to abide by the law, and to get the insurance claim process started smoothly.

Immediately following an accident, drivers should stop immediately and move to the side of the road only if it is safe to do so, and to call 911 if there are injuries involved, according to the California Department of Insurance.

People should call the police, because in some areas, the police may respond to every accident scene, while also considering factors such as its severity and location. Some authorities will not come to the scene if the accident occurs on private property.

“Document as much as possible,” said Beth Zeigler, an insurance advisor from Zeigler Insurance in Brentwood. “Exchange insurance information from each party, along with contact information. This is extremely important.”

If the owner of a damaged car or damaged property cannot be found or located, leave a note with the names and addresses of the driver and owners of the involved cars. People should also notify their agent and/or insurance companies immediately. If anyone is injured or the vehicle damage exceeds $750, they must report the accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 10 days. Any failure to notify the DMV may result in the suspension of one’s driver’s license. Zeigler advised to also never admit fault because stories can change and lead to disputes.

“Never admit fault, and never get in an argument,” Zeigler said. “Get pictures, all four sides of the vehicles if possible, along with driver’s license pictures, so that there are no typos.”

This is extremely important.” with scenes and pictures of the accident, such as possible skid marks or if the accident took place off the road. Additionally, the California Department of Insurance also recommends obtaining names, addresses, telephone numbers including those of any witnesses, and vehicle identification numbers and to verify that the information provided is accurate. Zeigler also added that reasons can vary for insurance premiums increasing, depending on a driver’s accident history, their age, if a bodily injury occurred, and how much insurance they have to pay out. Insurance premiums can increase up to 20 percent for those found to be at fault. To lower insurance premiums, insurance company Geico states ways to do this that include increasing their deductible, maintaining a good driving record, and bundling on different types of policies. However, it could take three to five or 10 years for people to get their premiums back down due to losing a good driver discount, being a younger or older driver, or in the event of a DUI. Other tips from the California Department of Insurance, include:

♦ Read insurance policies, and don’t wait until after an accident. If it is hard to understand a policy, ask an agent and/or company to get clarification. ♦ Get as much information as possible at the accident scene to provide and immediately notify an agent and/or insurance company if an accident occurs. ♦ Save stories for the police and for the insurance companies. ♦ Cooperate with insurance adjusters and investigators to support their efforts. ♦ If it is difficult to understand something about the claims procedure, ask an agent and/or insurance company representative to explain.

Things to avoid: ♦ Do not sign statements regarding fault or promise to pay for damages to the other party. ♦ If the other party offers to pay for one’s deductible, do not sign anything. ♦ Do not refuse to share required information, including details for driver, insurance, and vehicle.

“To begin a claim, the client will need to contact the claims department directly,” Zeigler said. “The claims adjuster will have specific questions regarding the incident and will gather the information needed. I personally like to speak with clients when they experience a claim. It gives me an opportunity to review the situation, better understand what took place, and explain the claims process.”

Zeigler added that while some clients choose to report a claim directly to the insurance carrier, Zeigler want clients to know that she is available as a resource and there to assist whenever it is needed.

“There are also situations where a claim occurs outside of our office hours,” Zeigler said. “In those cases, clients should contact the carrier directly so the claim can be reported as soon as possible.”

JAKE MENEZ hile the idea of winterizing a vehicle brings to mind snow tires and chains ahead of a snowfall, it is just as

important to prepare for winter driving in a place like East County that experiences frequent winter rain instead. There are a number of precautions drivers can take before getting on the road this winter.

Maintaining a vehicle is important year-round, but autumn is the best time to touch base on various key components, according to Rob Brandt, an executive at Bill Brandt Ford in Brentwood. Brandt says the most important things to service when preparing a vehicle for winter conditions in California are the windshield wipers, tires and brakes.

Check your tires

“Check tire inflation pressure on all four tires and the spare more frequently in fall and winter,” The American Automobile Association (AAA) says in its winter checklist.

“As the average temperature drops, so will tire pressures — typically by one PSI (pounds per square inch) for every

Replace your windshield wipers

Replacing windshield wiper blades is one of the simplest checks that Brandt recommends before winter because it is one most drivers can do themselves. The rubber components that repel water can be made brittle by the summer sun and result in ineffective blades that streak or leave behind droplets, reducing visibility.

“Wintertime is a good time to change wiper blades for visibility,” Brandt says.

“We don’t get as much rain as other states here, but it’s good to stay on top of that.”

For drivers who are unable to change the wiper blades themselves, auto parts stores often provide this service free of charge.

Check your brakes and brake pads

Even with properly maintained tires, coming to a stop safely on a slippery road requires a vehicle with brakes in good

condition. Worn-down brake pads increase stopping distance regardless of season, Kelley Blue Book warns on its website. Worn-down pads and slippery winter roadways are a combination that can lead to traffic accidents if brakes are not maintained. A squeaking or grinding metal-on-metal sound when brakes are applied is the most common indicator that pads need to be replaced, but the vehicle pulling to one side while braking or a rumbling in the pedal can also be indicators of needed service, the website says.

Test your battery

In addition to the three winter preparedness tips suggested by Brandt, AAA’s own winter care checklist recommends drivers check their car’s battery, as colder weather can cause a battery with a weak charge to struggle.

“Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician,” the checklist says. “A fully charged battery in good condition is required to start an engine in cold weather.”
