Brentwood St. Patrick’s Day Parade

March 19, 2022

COUNTY OF SUFFOLK

OFFICE OF THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE Steven Bellone COUNTY EXECUTIVE

March 19, 2022 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Brentwood St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Residents from Brentwood and the surrounding communities have gathered for over half a century to celebrate this occasion. Given the experience of the last two years, it is especially exciting to be together with friends, family, and neighbors for this extraordinary event. I am pleased that the parade committee has selected Edwin D. Callaghan as this year’s Grand Marshal. As an Alumnus, Kindergarten Music Teacher, and Director of Musical Theater programs at Brentwood High School, Edwin’s dedication to creativity, compassion, and his students is without question. His life-long service in education to the Brentwood community is truly deserving of today’s recognition. On behalf of Suffolk County’s 1.5 million residents, I would like to extend my best wishes to Grand Marshal Callaghan, and my appreciation to the Brentwood Parade Committee for once again organizing this remarkable event. Enjoy the festivities! Sincerely,

STEVEN BELLONE Suffolk County Executive

Edwin D. Callaghan

Gerard and Maureen Callaghan moved to Brentwood in 1960, from Bay Ridge Brooklyn. There they raised their four children, Karen, Laurie, Gerard Jr. and Edwin. Gerard Sr. worked at a milk processing plant in Queens for many years, but finished his working career at Entenmann’s Bakery. Maureen worked for many years as a Health Aid in the Brentwood Union Free School District. Edwin was born in 1965, and entered the Village Elementary School on Third Ave in 1970. Ed was active in Scouting, joining two different troops in Brentwood, and an Explorer group. As an active member of St. Anne’s Parish, Ed was a member of the folk group for many years. The Callaghan family have been members of Brentwood Legion Ambulance for 4 decades, including Maureen dispatching ambulances from their home on Laurie Road. Ed was a member of the ambulance squad for almost 10 years. As a student in the Brentwood Schools, Ed was chosen as an All State and All Eastern Vocalist and earned the National School Choral Award. He was a member of the Junior and National Honor Society, and was active in many school activities. Upon graduation in 1983, Ed received a scholarship to attend Ithaca College, where he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 1987. He earned a Master’s Degree from S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook in 1992. Hired by the Brentwood School District as an Itinerant Special Education Music Teacher, for the last 28 of his 33 year teaching career, Ed was a Kindergarten Music teacher. Ed has taught well over 20,000 Brentwood students. Ed was the director of Musical Theatre programs at Brentwood High School from 1987 until his retirement in 2020. In that position, he taught the two summer music theatre workshops every year, and directed and produced the annual High School Musical. Alumni of this program have gone on to careers in all aspects of the arts, including performing on Broadway, on television and in movies. Many Brentwood graduates have benefited from the Performing Arts Scholarship that Ed spearheaded for many years. In 2006, the Callaghan family established the Maureen Callaghan Memorial Summer Music Camp Scholarship, which has supported students and activities at the annual 5day summer music program. Outside of the classroom, Ed has worked in theaters across Long Island, as both a director and a performer. Ed is extremely proud of his work to bring forward the issues of diversity and inclusiveness, to his classroom, his stage, the school district, and the Brentwood community.
