Mary Holmes Reid Lifetime Achievement
Born in North Carolina, Mary is the oldest of the four children of George and Mamie Holmes. Arriving in Bay Shore in 1947, the family immediately joined First Baptist Church and Mary was enrolled in the Fifth Avenue Elementary School. Along with her family, Mary participated in all phases of church and school life within the Bay Shore community. Mary, her late husband Steven, and three children purchased a home in the Brentwood School district in 1964. They became active in the community as PTA parents, members of the BYA, Brentwood Booster Club, traveling with the different sports teams, Green Machine parents, attending school board meetings, and yes, the political network. Some say that Mary Reid is a maverick, ahead of her time by becoming the first woman and the first African American in many organizations. She says that she was never presented with a time table, so she set her own schedule. Mary is always asking questions, offering suggestions, trying different methods (some with permission, some without), but always speaking out for what she believes is right and sometimes standing alone. However, she has a willingness to compromise and makes the effort to assist people in reaching a consensus. She leads by example. Mary was the Cheerleading Commissioner for Brentwood Youth Activities for several years. She served as cheerleading coach for Brentwood High School. She and her family were instrumental in organizing the first cheerleading competitions hosted by the school district and began the movement to recognize cheerleading as a sport. Mary served on the Brentwood School Board of Trustees. She is grateful for that experience; it helped her prepare for her next volunteer assignment. For the last 25 years, she has served faithfully as a Trustee for the Brentwood Public Library. Together with the other trustees and staff, the best library/community center in the state and country has been created. Partnerships have been built with other groups that have allowed for expanded services. Great changes are being made daily to continually meet the needs and the many requests of the close to one million patrons served annually. Employed as a Youth Opportunity Program Counselor at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, Mary hired and supervised many students from Brentwood/Bay Shore school districts. She assisted them as they transitioned from school to job, and introduced them to their first real work experience; but most importantly, Mary impressed upon them the values that would help them be successful in their lives.
At Pilgrim, Mary became involved in the Union Movement. She learned that the power of working together makes a difference in the workplace and in the community. She strongly believes in unions and has served on numerous committees. Currently, she is a member of the NYS Public Employee Federation and serves as the Nassau/Suffolk Chapter President. As a member of the Town of Islip NAACP’s religious affairs committee, she helped organize the first Community Prayer Summit (2012) and collaborated with the NAACP to host an annual Meet the Candidate Forum. Mary has worked on many local, statewide and national campaigns. She presently participates in her union’s screening of prospective candidates and works with other community advocates to increase voter participation. As a sworn Election Inspector, she feels it is a duty to ensure that every citizen’s voice be heard. In the Brentwood/Bay Shore, Town of Islip community, Mary’s service activities are extensive, and include civil rights, education, social services, religious, labor relations and politics Mary currently serves as an AARP Tax Aid Counselor at the Brentwood Public Library, is a member of the Suffolk Community College Foundation Board, Town of Islip AntiBias Task Force, Town of Islip Housing Authority, Long Island Housing Partnership, Northwell Health - Feinstein Research Community Advisory Board, Northwell Health – Southside Hospital Patient & Family Council, Suffolk County Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association, Suffolk County Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Commission, Town of Islip NAACP, Islip Food for Hope, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and Bay Shore ‘Under The Big Tent’ Committee. She is also active in First Baptist Church of Bay Shore’s Political Education Committee, Food Pantry, 8AM Choir, and the effort to revitalize Penataquit Creek. Mary’s efforts have been recognized with numerous awards and citations of which she is very proud. Her induction into the Bay Shore High School Hall of Fame in 2008 is most memorable because it is her alma mater and she was recognized and honored for the perseverance of herself and her family. The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Bay Shore and the Bay Shore BID honored Mary as their 2015 Distinguished Bay ShoreBrightwaters Citizen. “As one of Bay Shore’s most esteemed residents, Mary has earned our deep affection and admiration all because of her unwavering commitment to improve the lives of people from all races, religions and backgrounds. As a decision maker on the boards of many influential organizations, Mary has been instrumental in Bay Shore’s turnaround and has become a voice that is heard and respected throughout Long Island and New York State.” Family is first in Mary’s life she always finds time to babysit her grands/greatgrandchildren as well as to assist anyone who calls in need of help. It has been the love and encouragement of her supportive family, led by her 104 year old mother, Mamie Holmes and her children, Karl, Stefanie, Stacey and their families, that have always sustained her. Mary Holmes Reid continues to be an inspiration to many, encouraging them to let their voices be heard and to answer the call for action when the opportunity presents itself.
Tio Minguillon Outstanding Member of the Year Tio Minguillon was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to Queens with his family at the age of 10 months. The family moved to Huntington when Tio was 7. From the age of 14, he worked in the restaurant business, starting as a weekend busboy at The Twelve Arches Restaurant in Westbury where his father also worked. After graduating from Walt Whitman High School, Tio attended SUNY Farmingdale, where he studied the restaurant business. For twenty years, he worked a full time construction job with Laborers Union Local 1298 while also working weekends in the hospitality business. Tio put in many long hours at both jobs to support his wife Angela and daughter Marissa. Fourteen years ago, Tio met Michael Lessing who offered him a job at one of their newly acquired venues. This began a long and ongoing relationship with the Lessing’s Organization. Tio has worked in four of their locations. In June 2013, the Lessings became part of the Brentwood community as the proprietors of the Brentwood Country Club and Tio was offered the position of General Manager. During his first month in Brentwood, he met Eric Horn and Bruce Fabrizio who introduced him to the Chamber of Commerce. Tio has been with the Chamber for five years, during which he has met and made many friends. This past year, he was elected Vice President of the Chamber. Tio enjoys what he does; every weekday meeting new people, every weekend at a party. The community has embraced him as part of the Brentwood family. Tio would like to thank the Lessings and the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce.
William Menendez Community Advocate
Bill Menendez has spent his life serving the community in one capacity or another. He is a retired NYPD Detective who ended his career after working for three months at the World Trade Center. Upon moving to Brentwood, he joined the Brentwood FD and has been a member for the past 26 years; he is currently serving as a Fire Commissioner. In addition, Bill is a 15 year member of the Brentwood Legion Ambulance. Twelve years ago, Bill was elected to the Brentwood Public Library Board of Trustees and he advocates for the community by attending local, state, and national trustee workshops, where he networks with elected officials and brings back valuable information to enhance library services. Bill is a member of numerous organizations including the Knights of Columbus (30 years), the Brentwood Historical Society, NAACP, the Brentwood Parade Committee, the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade Committee and the Brentwood Islanders Lions Club (25 years). He was a founding member of the Latino Health Initiative and is a former member of the Pronto of LI Advisory Board and the Suffolk County Hispanic Advisory Board. In addition to tonight’s award, Bill has received the President’s Award from the Teamsters Union, Community Service Award from the Salvadoran Business Alliance and Hispanic Heritage Awards from Congressman Steve Israel, the NYS Senate and the Town of Islip.
Emilio Sanchez Business Member of the Year
Emilio Sanchez grew up in Brentwood from the age of 2, after his parents moved from Manta, Ecuador. Emilio attended the Brentwood school district and graduated from Brentwood High School in 2002. He continued his education at Suffolk County Community College and Farmingdale State College where he studied Computer Science and Programming. He then took a different career path and decided to go into the banking field. In 2004, he started as a teller with North Fork Bank and ended his time there as assistant branch manager of the Brentwood office. Following his tenure at North Fork Bank, Emilio joined Capital One Bank. While with Capital One, he partnered with and worked alongside organizations like Pronto of Long Island, the EOC, and Junior Achievement to provide financial education to areas like Brentwood, Bay Shore and Central Islip. After leaving Capital One Bank, Emilio joined TD Bank as a financial services representative helping customers with short and long term savings needs. In 2014, Emilio became part of the wonderful financial institution that is People’s United Bank, a regional bank that is dedicated to community involvement. As a branch manager with People’s United, he has partnered with many organizations including the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Adelante of Suffolk County, EOC, Junior Achievement and others. This is Emilio’s way of giving back to the community in which he grew up and which he loves. He is a liaison between the bank and the community in order to deepen the relationship between them. During his spare time Emilio, enjoys going off road on the beach in his Jeep (aka The Lemon) with his family, 1 year old son Damian and his wife Yeidy.
Obdulio De Leon Volunteer of the Year
Obdulio De Leon was born in Guatemala and moved to New York with his family in 1985 due to political turmoil. Originally living in Hempstead, the family moved to Brentwood in 1991 where Oby attended Brentwood High School and graduated from the Ross Building in 1993. He completed his undergraduate work at Hofstra University and, as a father of two children, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from St. Joseph’s College. Oby became involved in the community at an early age. His family belongs to the Church of the Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormons, where service to others is a major part of their mission. After serving as an LDS missionary for two years in Los Angeles, Oby returned to Brentwood with an even stronger desire to extend a hand to those in need. After violence struck our community, Oby was a driving force to highlight the good, rather than the bad, by co-founding The Knowledge Project, a non-profit organization to help Brentwood HS students reach their full potential. In addition, Oby helped establish a Brentwood chapter of the Guardian Angels, to help the community feel safe in their neighborhoods. Oby is married to Kristin and has three beautiful children: Mateo who is 14, Ava who is 7, and Quinn who is 3 years old. On this occasion, Oby is grateful to the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce for being honored with this award and he accepts is graciously and with humility in honor of his children. As many people know, Oby was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in August 2015 and his children have been vital in keeping him going and enabling him to continue to do community service.
