Belinda Pagdanganan Lifetime Achievement

Many of you know her simply as Bel – and don’t even dare try pronouncing her last name – Bel Pagdanganan has been a local resident of Bay Shore for over 31 years. She is passionate about her commitment to the local communities of Brentwood and North Bay Shore while working her full time job at National Grid as a Government Relations Manager. Bel first started with LILCO in 2001 and later Key Span where she worked in Emergency Preparedness focusing on storms and gas emergencies, oil spills, facility evacuation plans, hazmat, and business continuation plans. Her hands-on experience in Emergency Management, Environmental, Community Relations, and Government Relations paved the way for her to become actively engaged with the local community and seek opportunities to strengthen relationships with elected officials, municipal governments, not-for-profits, and private business. In 2005 through 2008, she left Key Span to join Suffolk County Government as the county’s first Asian American appointed to the position of Director of Emergency Management and later as Deputy Commissioner of Suffolk County’s Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. Right at the heels of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, she managed Suffolk County’s OEM staff with a charge to safeguard life and property of the County’s residents and apply the lessons learned from these major disasters to improve planning, preparedness, and response. In 2008, she came back to National Grid (formerly Key Span) and joined their Government Relations team. Bel continues her proactive efforts to position National Grid’s initiatives with elected officials and relevant stakeholders in the areas of gas infrastructure expansion/ investment, resiliency and storm preparedness, consumer advocacy programs, gas safety and reliability, compliance and gas system integrity.

Michael Sgroi Distinguished Member of the Year

Michael Angelo Sgroi graduated from Oceanside High School in 1977 and attended Island Drafting and Tech. on a full scholarship. Upon graduation, he accepted a job as a draftsman at General Instruments in Hicksville and went to Nassau Community College at night. After graduation, Mike was employed by Circuit Technology in Farmingdale and while there, he attended Polytech and Farmingdale Universities at night. Mike left Circuit Technology in 1985 to become the supervisor of the design department for National in Smithtown. He transferred to Aeroflex Labs in Plainview in 1988 for the position of Computer Aided Design Administrator and oversaw the transition of the department from manual drafting to complete automation of the circuit design process. He remained CAD Administrator until retiring in 2007 due to illness, yet stayed involved with the community. In 2008, Mike ran a fundraiser for disabled veterans and received an honorary commendation for that effort. In 2009, along with his wife and daughters, he raised funds for diabetes research by sponsoring a “Tour for a Cure. Also that year, Mike ran for and won a trustee position on the Brentwood School Board. He was involved in a rebuilding program for the school district, including a new library for an elementary school, a pool for the high school and new playground equipment for Laurel Park. Since losing his kidneys in 2007, and being on dialysis for 5 years before receiving a kidney transplant from his sister Cathy Stamile, Mike has been very involved with organ donors and the Kidney Foundation. He has been a member of the PTA since his first daughter started kindergarten and has held every position, including Council President for the school district. Mike joined the Brentwood Lions Club in 2005 and has held every position there, including President. Through the Lions Club, he has been able to participate in food & clothing drives for the poor, raise funds for the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown and provide free eye screenings at the elementary schools and the firehouse. Even though he is disabled and retired, Mike has no intention of standing idle.

Richard Loeschner Community Advocate

He was appointed Superintendent of Schools this July. After teaching mathematics for fifteen years, Mr. Loeschner came to Brentwood High School as the Mathematics Department Head. He was promoted to Assistant Principal at North Middle School before returning to High School as the Associate Principal. He later was named Principal of South Middle School before returning to the High School as Principal, where he served for the last seven years. In 2016, Mr. Loeschner was nominated for received the New York State High School Principal of the Year award. Under his guidance, the graduation rate increased by 17 percent, with approximately 85 percent of the graduating class attending two or four year colleges. Mr. Loeschner is a strong believer in a trustful, happy and loving learning environment. He attends as many extracurricular and special events as possible. He makes himself available to administrators, faculty, staff and students. He has managed to succeed in doing his administrative work, as well as building relationships with students and the Brentwood community. Noted parent Judy Crawford, “He is proud to be a principal in such a diverse school community. Mr. Loeschner would give the shirt off his back if it meant providing a student with the opportunity to complete high school and further a career, whether it be a college, the military, or the world of work. He is a dedicated, caring, hardworking man who always seems to place the needs of others before him. He truly has been an inspiration to the Brentwood School District and community.” Mr. Loeschner has been married to the love of his life, Annemarie, for thirty years and he couldn’t be prouder of his three wonderful children; two sons, Richard and Christopher, and daughter Emily.
