2025 Grand Marshal

Wood’s Mens Wear brought Ellen’s family to Brentwood in 1967 and she fell in love with the smell of the pines and the beauty of this diverse community. She knew she wanted to be a teacher at a young age and when she discovered mathematics, she knew what she wanted to teach. As a math major at SUNY Stony Brook, she did her student teaching in Brentwood and spent 33 years teaching at Brentwood High School.

During her teaching career, Ellen was an active member of the Brentwood Teachers Association, becoming part of the Executive Council, serving as Financial Secretary and Secondary Vice President. She served on and chaired several district committees, volunteered in the summer reading program and, over a 5 year period, was part of the statewide committee that wrote Math 11 Regents Exams. She was twice recognized by the National Honor Society as their Teacher of the Year, as well as receiving the NYSUT Inspiration Award as a retiree. She has been serving on the Retirees of Brentwood Schools (ROBS) executive board since 2009.

In 1997, Ellen was elected to the Brentwood Public Library Board of Trustees, where she currently serves as Vice President. The Library Board has been Ellen’s stepping stone into wider community involvement and her retirement from BHS in 2005 afforded her the time to become more active. In 2022, Ellen was reelected to her sixth five-year term. Advocating for the Library, because of the critical part it plays in providing the Brentwood community the resources that are so important, is one of the most fulfilling roles that Ellen has undertaken. It was especially critical during the COVID pandemic, when the Library served as a source of both information and social engagement.

From 2005 until it closed in 2009, Ellen taught AP Calculus at the Academy of St. Joseph. She served on the Academy’s 150th Anniversary Dinner Dance Committee and, prior to COVID restrictions, continued to visit the aging Sisters both at the Maria Regina Residence and the Convent. In 2015, she was elected to the Board of the Maria Regina Residence, where she served until its sale in 2024. In addition, Ellen became a CSJ Associate, to strengthen her connection to the Sisters and their mission.

In 2012, with the support and encouragement of the Brentwood Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Retirees of Brentwood Schools, Ellen reestablished the Brentwood Historical Society. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant community group with more than 100 members. It is recognized as one of the most active Historical Societies in Suffolk County. With the help of grants from the Robert DL Gardiner Foundation, Sen. Phil Boyle, the Dahlquist Foundation, and others, the Historical Society undertook the slow process of restoring the Modern Times Schoolhouse. Thanks to the Brentwood School District, the schoolhouse will be opening this year.

For the past ten years, Ellen has been a member of the Brentwood Parade Committee. She is the announcer of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, host of the Grand Marshal dinner, and editor of the Parade Journal. In addition, she takes part in the ceremonies honoring our Veterans at the annual Memorial Day parade and has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 10 years.

Ellen was recognized by the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce as their Distinguished Member of the Year in 2016 and was recognized with their Lifetime Achievement award in 2024. She served as the Corresponding Secretary for two years and recently stepped down as Treasurer. She has also been recognized by the Suffolk County Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, the New York State United Teachers, and the Brentwood School District for her community service.

Most recently, Ellen was appointed to the Audit Committee for the Brentwood School District. She began her third term this year.

Being bored in retirement was never an option!
