Jay Satenstein

2017 Grand Marshal

Jay Satenstein One of many Irish Blessings begins “May you always have work for your hands to do…”. This fits Jay Satenstein so well. Jay has been involved in the Brentwood community for over 50 years. His parents opened Harel Jewelers in 1961 and Jay worked there Saturdays and after school. He soon realized how much he liked Brentwood and the jewelry business. In college, Jay majored in business and took courses with the Gemological Institute of America. After graduation in 1968, he worked full time at Harel Jewelers and married his wife Pat. Two years later they purchased the store and Jay began his involvement with the community he had learned to care for. Harel Jewelers was one of the founding members of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and once he became the owner, Jay joined the Chamber. He held every office at least once and was involved with a myriad of projects. He is still involved today. Jay joined the Brentwood Rotary Club in the early 1970s and served as President twice. He was founder and director of the “Brentwood Rotary Cookie Run” for 30 years. This major fund raiser enabled thousands of Long Islanders to see an amazing side of the Brentwood community. In October 2016, Jay organized a Rotary project that packaged over 8300 nutritionally balanced meals. Over 50 people worked together and gave their time and money to help those in need. This project was hosted by the Brentwood Rotary and Pronto of Long Island. Jay has been involved with Pronto of Long Island for many years and is currently the Treasurer. He is actively involved in fund raising events. You can see him speaking to politicians, local businesses and other groups that help support Pronto. Now that he is retired, he spends many hours working with the employees and volunteers. Jay can be seen driving the truck to pick up food or on site helping to see that the many services that Pronto provides are successfully and efficiently carried out. Brentwood has many facets. Groups work hard to meet the needs of the great variety of people who live here. Besides his involvement with the Chamber, Rotary and Pronto, Jay presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Maria Regina Residence and the Brentwood Historical Society. His commitment to Brentwood is sincere and he believes in always promoting the positive. In his free time, Jay continues to run and to enjoy his classic cars. He attends Car and Track Club meetings and helps with their fundraising activities. Since retiring this past summer, Jay is looking forward to spending more time with his family. He plans to visit his son John, who lives in Burlington, Vermont, and David who lives in Bristol, England, more often. He is excited about what the future holds for him and Pat. He is humbled to be chosen as Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
