The articles in this edition of the IMPACT Report recognize the impact of leading by serving others—recognizing the legacy of faithful leadership at Brentwood Academy, the role of student support in maximizing the potential of BA students, and the wisdom of a proactive approach to security.

One of my mottos is “Never Delay Gratitude,” so thank you to each family, organization, corporation, and foundation listed in this issue of the IMPACT Report and to those donors who wish to remain anonymous.

7-Year Club First Annual Celebration Breakfast

The Office of Alumni and Development started a new tradition this year to celebrate our 7-Year Club students, those which are attending Brentwood Academy all seven years from 6th grade through Senior year. It was a wonderful morning for both the 7-Year Club seniors and their parents who had the opportunity to relax and reflect on all that had transpired for the Class of 2025 since the fall of 2018. Kim Smith Elliott ‘95 summed it up wonderfully in the remarks she made, “Seven is the number of days in the week, colors in the rainbow, wonders in the Ancient World, and notes in the diatonic musical scale – it is the number of completion. The Seven Year Club breakfast honors those students that are finishing the seven-year race at Brentwood Academy. It is a celebration of the journey from a wide-eyed, curious, and often awkward 6th grader to a student ready to leave the nest, bolder and wiser because of their time here. This is a time to reminisce about silly middle school behavior, social misadventures, challenging classes, inspiring moments, and personal growth. Seven years of legacy are defined by chapels and advisory, by Friday night lights and transformative teachers. Advice is passed on from one season unto the next, a reminder to be kind, stand in truth, cherish experiences, and look to the Lord always.” Brentwood Academy thanks our 7-Year Club families for seven wonderful years!

MISSION-MINDED SECURITY

By Sgt. Jason Beddoe, MNPD Ret. The pace of change is staggering, and the uncertainty in our world is real. As stated in Proverbs 22:3, “A prudent man foresees the dangers ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” The kind of wisdom Proverbs speaks of is not just strategic insight or experience; it’s the wisdom that comes from God. There are many in the security profession who are seeking answers and tirelessly trying to find solutions to the deep brokenness we see around us, believing that human insight will eventually outwit evil. But our ultimate hope isn’t found in man–it’s found in Jesus. So, no matter what we do, it always comes back to this: seeking God’s will on earth, as it is in Heaven.

As the Security Director for Brentwood Academy, I am deeply thankful for this community, for the support, trust, and appreciation for the work that often happens behind the scenes to keep our community safe. We ask for continued prayers, not just for protection, but that we would lead with humility and never confuse success with our own ideas, decisions, or strategies. We can plan all we want, but at the end of the day, we’re engaged in a spiritual battle, not just a physical one, making prayer essential. With that said, we want to share some of the steps we’ve taken to strengthen safety at our school while serving the BA community with care and conviction.

Grandparents’ Day 2025 March 28 was a beautiful spring day, and the BA campus was alive with nearly 500 grandparents and special guests who visited for Grandparents’ Day. Guests were given a glimpse into the lives of BA students through campus tours and stations in the dining hall where they could learn more about Academics, Athletics, Christian Life, Fine Arts, and Student Support. Grandparents were able to visit the Robotics Lab and College Counseling as well. They loved choosing their Grandparents’ Day gift at the Grandparents’ Marketplace as they visited the Campus Store.

Guests heard a final message from retiring Head of School Curt Masters and a welcome and vision from our new Head of School, Dr. John Patterson.

DAY OF GIVING On April 15, Brentwood Academy launched the third annual Alumni and Parents of Alumni Day of Giving. This 24-hour online fundraising event allows alumni and parents of alumni to come together to support the BA Fund, Brentwood Academy’s most important annual giving initiative.

Surprise goody bags were sent from Brentwood Academy’s Campus Store to winners that included the first donor of the day (Brooke Ball ’24), the last donor of the day (Maggie Luna ’10), and all donors from the graduating class with the highest percentage of participation (the Class of ’01). “The competition among the classes as the day went on was fun to watch on social media, and the winning class was so excited to claim their bragging rights,” said Kelly Smith, Assistant Director of Development.

Years after this camp experience, desiring to build a school that would result in influencing others as he was influenced at Camp Hy-Lake, Mr. Brown founded Brentwood Academy and was headmaster from 1969-2000. In the summer of 1999, a financial gift combined with an acquisition of land allowed for the building of the middle school. Mr. Brown notes, “The Trustees had decided that if we were to grow the school, a new middle school was needed for the 6th through 8th grades. This meeting was with the Trustee Building Committee and the architect,

Mr. David Minnigan ’76. As I was sitting in listening to the discussion, I started doodling on a note pad what I thought a middle school should look like. A lot of this came from my experience at Hy-Lake. I wanted the building to encourage relationships as well as living in community as family. I did not want any interference with bells and announcements during class time. David Minnigan took the sketch, and we went all over the country, looking for schools similar to that sketch. David came up with the final design for what is now our middle school, which was completed during Curt Masters’ first year [2000].”

When Brentwood Academy built the Duncan Library in 1983, Mr. Brown had asked architect Mr. Minnigan to design a round room to hold faculty meetings where Mr. Brown could sit in front and have direct eye contact with every teacher because they sat at the same level. This intentional architecture was carried over into the design of the middle school, forming dens that would encourage relationships and community within each grade. The design of the dens in the middle school, similar in design to the round room in the Duncan Library, includes classrooms encircling these central communal areas, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among students in each grade. The intentional architecture of Brentwood Academy’s middle school provides a space that supports the nurturing and challenging of each whole person—mind, body, and spirit–to the glory of God. During the naming ceremony, Mrs. Nancy Brasher ’73, BA’s first graduating class alumna and former middle school director, remarked, “God planted something in Mr. and Mrs. Mr. Brown’s orignal sketch of the middle school

In addition to prayer by two current students and several guest speakers, Grammy award-winning songwriter Gordon Kennedy ’78 performed a song he wrote in honor of Mr. Brown. Retired Head of School Mr. Curt Masters also shared, “In the Bible, people set a pile of rocks as a memorial of what God has done, to prompt people to explain why it was there to younger generations. When I was hired at BA, three piles of rocks were set up where the dens would be, where people gathered around to pray for what God would be doing. And now God is still at work in this place.” The ceremony was followed by a reception where attendees shared stories and celebrated the continued growth of Brentwood Academy.

I say ‘I,’ but what I mean is ‘we,’ as that’s the blessing we’ve seen over the last several months. It’s not only been the prayers of so

HURRICANE RELIEF When Hurricane Helene hit the southeast last fall, the devastation was unbelievable, and it seemed everyone knew someone who had been directly impacted. Many sprang into action to offer help. Two of those people were BA faculty members Mr. Jim Chapman and Mr. Steve Widmaier.

Mr. Chapman quickly organized a food and supply drive, receiving more donations than he could have imagined. He packed everything up in his Suburban and a trailer and headed out to Asheville, North Carolina over fall break, delivering all the donations from the BA community to GracePoint Church where his son, Canaan Chapman, is a pastor. GracePoint has been a community leader in distributing supplies and equipment after the hurricane, with the goal of stewarding the monetary gifts and supplies so that every dollar goes to the people directly affected by the storm. So far, they’ve helped

many across the country, but because of the personal connections of my dad and those who knew where we were, the cars were loaded up, and water came for those who had none, formula arrived for newborn babies and their families who couldn’t get it, and so much more. While many families still work to rebuild, the community is gearing up for the long haul. So much has been done, and there’s still so much more to do! These people are so strong, and it’s a blessing to see!” He also wanted people to know that “Asheville is wide open and ready for visitors. So many local spots and businesses would greatly benefit from seeing tourists come–outdoor activities, food and drink, and so much more abound!”

Over fall break, Mr. Widmaier led a group on a mission trip to Greenville, Tennessee. Mr. Widmaier shared, “We had six students ranging from 6th-12th grade and four adults. You could see the power of God and His creation in

what the water was able to do. You would not believe the amount of water that moved through that area if you weren’t standing there looking at it. It completely reshaped parts of the river and surrounding areas. Having been to that area before, I was able to recognize how different areas looked after the storm. It makes you feel pretty small and helpless.

“We could also see God’s hands as many people traveled, like us, to help out wherever they could. It would not be possible for the clean-up efforts to succeed without the help of volunteers. You could also see people regain some hope as their homes were literally dug out of the mud.

“It was encouraging to see people give up their fall break to go and care for others.

The group did a great job of working together and diving into whatever tasks they were assigned. Two of my children were on the trip, and I hope they walked away seeing the importance of serving others. Sometimes it isn’t so much what you do when serving but more your willingness to do it. The people affected by the storm were encouraged to know that they weren’t alone and that there was hope for them.

Just showing up is such a big part of showing people the love of Christ. It was very dirty and tiring work, but the group happily did whatever was asked of them.”

BA Board of Trustees Chair and parent of two BA alums, Nathan Brandon was one of the adults who went on the trip. He shared, “To be able to serve alongside the BA students was great and a gift to me personally. I witnessed firsthand how they not only worked but also how they met families on a personal level. It was great to witness. The care and empathy they showed to people who had lost everything was incredible. In many instances, the families just wanted to share, and the students took time to listen. They could have been doing something else with their time, but these students chose to get involved, pitch in, and bring some comfort to those they came in contact with. I’ve been part of many service projects both in the United States and internationally, and the way these students conducted themselves with each other as well as with the community in Greeneville, TN is a great testament to their character.”

WINTERIM MISSION TRIP The Dominican Republic Winterim mission trip aimed to “Serve God’s people through mission work in the Dominican Republic.” Mr. Matt Golenor, Ms. Bonnie Hall, and Ms. Hannah Santi ’09 led a group of students to work with BA’s global service partner, A Door to Hope, for five days. They had the opportunity to serve the village communities alongside A Door to Hope by participating in construction projects, food distribution, and teaching a Vacation Bible School. Outside of the mission work, they were able to experience the local culture and landscape that makes the Dominican Republic such a spectacular place. This backdrop also provided an incredible opportunity for students to continue to develop their own individual faith. “It was an unforgettable experience. It was amazing to see people who didn’t have much still worshipping God with everything they had,” remarked

This will start at the beginning of the 20252026 school year. The letters are created once a month and are emailed to Hope Haven where they will be printed and hand delivered to the children. “’And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 ESV SUMMER MISSION TRIP TO UGANDA In June a group of BA women consisting of current students, alumna, moms, and faculty members took a ten-day mission trip to Uganda. The group traveled with Sweet Sleep, a ministry that works to build sustainable communities through thriving cooperative businesses by providing guidance, mentorship, and love. Mrs. Brittany Tomichek recalls, “Wherever we went, we were met by pure joy and unabashed hospitality. The children at the Good Samaritan Children’s Center and the Gulu village were overwhelmed with the distributions of sleeping mats, foam mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, and Bibles.”

The Good Samaritan Children’s Center consists of 2,700 children (mostly orphans) brought together from over 50 different tribes, working together to praise God and learn academics so that they will one day return to their villages and be future leaders to their people. At their Sunday worship, which was full of song, dance, and excitement for the Word of God, the BA group acted out Bible stories and songs, and the children at the center shared their songs as well.

Over 200 new bed sheets were given to the boys, and over 100 new blankets, underpants, and panty-pegs were given to the girls, along with school supplies and special water bottles for the rising graduating class of girls.

The trip also included several days of visiting Co-Ops, businesses started with seed money from Sweet Sleep. These Co-Ops operate as businesses and savings and loan groups administered by women who have been identified by the government and Sweet Sleep personnel as being outcasts and in need of help. These included well-established Co-Ops such as the Mulungi chemical factory where the women make candles, petroleum jelly, and bleach (which they package and sell at stores); a rice farm where the women grow rice (and have been so successful that they have added chickens, rabbits, and pigs to their farming business); and newer bean farming, goat, and brick-making CoOps. The BA group experienced the hard labor of making bricks, which involved carrying water from the well in buckets on their heads, mixing mud with their feet, scooping mud into brick molds, and flipping them onto the ground to let the wet bricks dry in the sun. The bricks would then be fired and used for building structures.

In addition, women from two different Co-Ops shared personal stories of their experiences in the rebel war. These women were captured at the ages of eight and twelve, forced to carry the soldiers’ heavy weapons, witnessed the murders of their parents and siblings, and forced to complete unspeakable acts. When the war ended and people were freed, they were rejected by remaining villagers and sent away to fend for themselves and their children. Some of the women found their way to the rock quarry and broke rocks into small pieces for 35 cents a bucket to make money to buy food for their families. The BA group attempted to complete their rock quarry tasks by smashing rocks with their hammers and then lifting the buckets of rock to carry on their heads and dump in the larger pile that would “at some point in time” be bought, and very few of them could fully complete the task. While at the quarry, the group observed one older woman diligently continuing to break her rocks to add to her piles. The group was overjoyed when the president of Sweet Sleep later sent a manager to talk to the woman about joining a Sweet Sleep Co-Op. Although these women have endured tremendous pain and suffering, they boldly shared stories of their redemption and healing after becoming Co-Op

members. Upon introductions, they sang the praises of God and then introduced themselves and proudly said, “I am a member.” They listened intently to Bible stories and songs, and we bonded in dances and laughter. We handed the CoOp women Bibles, and they were so thankful because it was the first Bible their families owned. One Co-Op was so honored by our visit that they gifted a rooster, which was to be eaten as the BA group’s final meal in Gulu. One BA graduate proudly held that rooster on the bus all of the way back to the hotel! The group named him Joe, and he now lives happily on a farm.

Sara Kate Tomichek ’29 reflects, “I saw God most clearly when we joined the children’s Sunday worship at the Good Samaritan Children’s Center. They all had so little, but they worshipped so freely. They weren’t scared to get down on their knees and praise the Lord with open hearts.” Makenna Dahl ’25 shared, “I saw God in everything we did during our time in Uganda. He revealed Himself in the most unexpected places— whether we were dancing at a Co-Op or simply sharing moments of laughter, His presence was undeniable. The joy we felt wasn’t temporary or shallow—it was pure and overflowing, coming straight from Him.” BA faculty member Mrs. Jamie Raab adds, “Our presence communicated love and sisterhood to the people there. They were honored because we traveled around the world just to visit them and be with them. They were so happy to know that we are all part of the kingdom of God, no matter where we come from.

Sharing smiles, dancing, singing, and laughing together demonstrated the unity of the body of Christ. I truly saw the Lord at work in the provision for these women in the Sweet Sleep Co-Ops. God is changing Uganda through these communities, and I saw Him at work in the faithful Ugandan ministers of the gospel who are teaching, training, and inspiring hope for the future of their country.”

RAY MULLICAN ’80

Retires After Years of Faithful Service to Brentwood Academy In July 2025, Mr. Ray Mullican ’80 retired from his role as Associate Head of School and Director of Finance and Facilities after 28 years of service at Brentwood Academy.

Ray leaves a legacy of dedication, loyalty, love, and servant leadership because of how he viewed his role as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ in all he endeavored to do in support of BA’s mission and ministry.

Ray’s example of leadership rooted in service, faith, and integrity was apparent both while overseeing major construction projects and while ensuring daily operations ran smoothly as he approached every task with careful planning and the ability to see from different perspectives. His behind-the-scenes work included meticulously following through on construction details to showing up in the middle of the night to move band equipment during flooding, among many other examples. Willing to sacrifice his own comfort for the care of BA paired with his thoughtful and wise approach to managing BA’s finances and facilities, Ray will be greatly missed.

While there are many tangible expressions of Ray’s impact throughout BA’s campus and facilities, they are far surpassed by his impact on countless students, families, and staff members. Ray continuously visited community members in hospitals, faithfully attended funerals, consistently stewarded resources to support our students, faculty, and staff, and enthusiastically cheered on sports teams. While the Brentwood Academy community will certainly miss his presence and guidance, we will continue to benefit from the strong foundation he helped build. His impact will live on in the lives of the students, staff, and families he faithfully served and led.

LAYERS OF The Impact of Academic Support at Brentwood Academy When John [name changed to protect the identity of the student] first arrived at Brentwood Academy, he struggled to keep up in the classroom. Reading assignments took a great deal of time, test prep was overwhelming, and his confidence was slipping. He always felt behind. But everything changed when he was introduced to Academic Support and a new tool called Speechify—a textto-speech software that allowed him to listen to his assigned readings. For the first time, he felt he could absorb what he was learning. “It was a game changer,” he said. His grades began to climb, but even more importantly, so did his belief in himself.

John’s story is just one example of the many lives being transformed through Brentwood Academy’s expanded Academic Support, a reflection of the school’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and challenging each student—mind, body, and spirit—to the glory of God. With one in five students nationwide experiencing learning differences or attention challenges, according to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, Brentwood Academy has responded with purpose and innovation. Recent growth includes the addition of faculty with specialized training, newly implemented evidence-based strategies, and expanded funding for cuttingedge assistive technologies. These enhancements ensure that both middle and upper school students receive the personalized support they need to thrive.

Bringing over thirty years of experience supporting students with learning differences, Director of Academic Support, Mrs. Kathy Boles, states, “I am thankful each day when I drive onto campus at Brentwood Academy to start my day supporting students. I have been very blessed with positions that have allowed me to support students, families, and teachers. I have had the opportunity to provide not only help, but also hope. I believe my passion for providing students what they need to reach their fullest potential is contagious, and I have team members who are equally excited to see students thrive.

Supporting Students While classroom accommodations like extended time on tests or preferential seating are helpful, Brentwood Academy’s Academic Support team goes well beyond these supports. This past school year, middle school students in need of additional academic support based on testing and academic performance were offered a new exploratory course called ACHIEVE. This course, taught by members of the academic support team, helps students learn skills needed to succeed in their academic journey. Skills taught during the ACHIEVE course with specific course materials include study skills, organization, advocacy, problem solving, reading comprehension, etc. Students placed in ACHIEVE remain in this course for the duration of the school year, except during the Bible exploratory course.

Upper school students needing additional support based on testing and academic performance receive personalized attention in a daily or every other day specialized study hall taught by members of the academic support team. Specialized study halls are designed to help students become more independent and proficient with their academic responsibilities. All students, with guidance from their academic support teacher, will develop, review, and update goals throughout the school year as they determine the strategies and techniques that are most effective for their specific learning profile. These structured sessions are designed to build independence, confidence, and strong study habits. Additionally, upper school students can take advantage of after school support with their core subjects two evenings per week through the Evening Educational Empowerment (E3) program.

This year, an additional layer of support was introduced to help seniors prepare for their next adventure—college. A one-on-one Transition to College meeting with a member of the academic support team provides valuable guidance to students and parents. Those eligible for accommodations or specific support at the college level gain a clearer understanding of their potential options for future success. By connecting families with essential resources and ensuring continued access to support services, this initiative helps students thrive as they take the next step in their academic journey.
