Excerpts from Danzón (2018), a slow dance inspired by the musics of Latin America. Its composition was particularly inspired by the orchestral work Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, who also drew upon the traditional danzón music of Cuba. Danzón embraces the expressive potential of the ensemble by having a significant number of instrumentalists play solos. Balancing individual voice with group sound, it transforms melodic material first stated by soloists throughout the rest of the ensemble. Overall, Danzón is an original interpretation of a traditional genre that provides many opportunities for both individual and collective musical expression.
