NEW BEGINNINGS It is an enormous privilege to continue serving the borough where I was born and raised, where my family is from, and a community whose future I care about deeply.

Our focus is clear: cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods and more affordable homes. These are the basics residents rightly expect, and they will be at the heart of everything we do to build a better borough.

That means action you can see and feel. We’re focusing on the issues that matter most to you: tougher action on fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, expanding our CCTV network, improving parks and public spaces, upgrading our leisure centres, and supporting more vibrant town centres.

Time to clear the clutter: Community skips are back

Do you need to get rid of an old sofa, washing machine or mattress? Do you want the opportunity freshen up and de-clutter your home?

With the community skips you can. You can get rid of your bulky waste for FREE and donate any reusable items to those who need them, which helps others and is great for the environment too!

The community skips regularly tour the borough, ready to take your bulky waste and then recycle it or give it a new home.

You can drop off up to five bulky items free of charge, as long as you can show proof of a Brent address.

We also want to give young people the best possible start in life. Among other things, that means piloting a school uniform grant ahead of the new school year, expanding access to sport and swimming, and creating new pathways into jobs, apprenticeships, and skills.

We will also work to unlock the funds needed to bring back the Education Maintenance Allowance.

And we’re pushing forward with the big, long-term projects that will shape Brent’s future for generations to come, including making the West London Orbital – a brand-new Overground line – a reality.

Brent is one of the most diverse places anywhere in Britain, and summer is when you really see that energy come alive. The pages ahead give a glimpse into just how much is happening near you over the next few months.

Boosted street patrols

Four new Anti-Social Behaviour and Noise Patrol Officers are hitting Brent’s streets as part of a fresh crackdown on noise nuisance and disruptive behaviour.

Operating between 5pm and 1am, the officers focus on areas most affected by noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour, providing a stronger, more visible and responsive presence during peak evening and night-time hours and after critical incidents.

The council-funded community safety initiative is designed to improve coordination between teams, strengthen partnerships with local services, and increase on-street visibility to help deter disruptive behaviour before it escalates.

The enhanced patrols form part of the council’s wider Investing in Brent programme, working to improve local safety.

Transforming life across our borough Cleaner and safer parks and streets, modern youth facilities, and stronger waste enforcement are on their way through the council’s Investing in Brent programme, putting £27 million towards the things that matter to you.

Here’s an update on some of our projects: Harlesden gets a makeover - A £1.8 million

investment has transformed Church End and Roundwood Green into a more environmentally friendly neighbourhood. Improvements include the completion of new outdoor space at the Freeman Family Centre, helping to create a Community Hub for Brent’s young people. Woodheyes Park has also been upgraded with new seating and a resurfaced sports pitch. The wider project has delivered tree planting, improved lighting, upgraded CCTV for enhanced safety, and better surfacing to support inclusive mobility.

Willesden Green revival - Residents are benefitting from upgrades to key community spaces in Willesden Green. The library’s living wall, first installed in 2022, has been revived with a £6,750 investment and will be maintained through to 2028.

Meanwhile, Comber Close Playground near Bidwell House has undergone a £24,000 transformation, creating a safer, more inclusive play space for children of all abilities. Scan QR code to find out more or go to www.brent.gov.uk/investinginbrent

Kingsbury gets a green upgrade - Kingsbury secured £280,000

through the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy, which reinvests money from developers building in Brent. Building on earlier TfL-funded upgrades, Kingsbury residents can now enjoy new murals co-designed with local residents, more tree planting, park landscaping and better cycling facilities. New fencing and 50 new trees at Woodcock Park will boost safety, biodiversity and community pride ahead of further works across the year.

Local legends line the streets

The latest mural in the Legends Series, celebrating football trailblazers from Brent, was unveiled in April. It honours four influential figures in the footballing world: Ricky Hill, Francis Joseph, Richard Langley and Yannick Bolasie.

Supported by the Professional Footballers’ Association in

partnership with the Jason Roberts Foundation (JRF), the mural is located near the Learie Constantine Centre, a significant place in the careers of both Ricky Hill and Richard Langley.

New funding targets Pedal Power! New Wembley–Harlesden fly-tippers, litter cycleway approved and crime Communities across Brent are set to benefit from major new investment as £680,000 of Pride in Place funding begins to deliver visible improvements across the borough.

The community-led regeneration programme is already turning local priorities into action, supporting safer streets, cleaner estates and upgrades to parks and public spaces. Projects funded so far include a mobile CCTV van to tackle fly-tipping and environmental crime, new public toilets in Roundwood Park, improved lighting and gating schemes on streets such as Avenue Road in Stonebridge, better signage across the borough and additional rapid response vehicles to clear litter and keep estates clean. The investment builds on the wider Investing in Brent programme and forms part of a long-term pipeline of improvements.

Harlesden and Stonebridge are also due to receive £20 million each over the next decade, with residents set to help shape spending decisions in the Councillor Muhammed Butt and Dawn Butler MP coming months across local announcing new funding for Brent neighbourhoods.

Plans for a major new cycleway linking Wembley and Willesden Junction have been given the go-ahead, marking an important step towards safer, healthier and more sustainable travel across Brent.

The £13 million scheme, known as Cycleway 72, will improve key routes between Wembley Central and Harlesden, including upgrades to pedestrian crossings and new protected cycle lanes. It will also make the North Circular crossing safer and more accessible for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Transport for London has identified the route as one of the capital’s highest-potential cycling corridors, with the project forming part of a longer-term ambition to connect Brent with Hammersmith and Fulham. The new cycleway has the potential to transform everyday journeys, helping more residents choose active, safe and environmentally friendly ways to get around. Brent welcomed the International Table Tennis Federation to the Civic Centre ahead of the World Championship Final at Wembley in May, putting our borough firmly on the global sporting stage. Staff explored the fan zone and museum, with many stepping up for a game themselves, including Brent’s Chief Executive, Kim Wright.

£5k grants to tackle climate change in your community

After supporting 100 community groups and individuals to deliver local sustainability projects, Brent is excited to announce the relaunch of the Together Towards Zero fund.

Residents and community groups can apply for grants of up to £5,000 to bring local climate action projects to life. If you’re passionate about making your neighbourhood greener, this is your opportunity to take action.

Funding is available for one-off projects that help tackle the climate and ecological emergency, ranging from community greening and waste reduction to energy initiatives.

To apply, you must be aged 18 or over, and both the applicant and the project must be based in Brent. Successful applicants can receive one grant per funding round.

Mental Health Charity to offer more services in Brent

The new wildlife pond at St Raphael’s Community Garden

Strengthening first aid skills across the borough

Residents took part in hands-on emergency response training during Knife Crime Awareness Week (18–24 May), helping to strengthening first aid skills across the borough.

The training followed the installation of two new bleed kits at Roundwood School and Community Centre and the Unity Centre, expanding a growing network of life-saving equipment in public spaces.

Free sessions in Kilburn, Neasden and Wembley gave residents practical skills to respond in an emergency, from calling 999 to using a bleed kit quickly and safely under pressure.

The week highlighted a shared commitment to tackling serious violence through prevention, education and community action. A dedicated youth event, Trauma 2 Triumph at Boxpark Wembley, created space for powerful conversations about the impact of violence, recovery and resilience, reinforcing the importance of support and early intervention.

Mental health charity Mind in Harrow will be expanding its services into Brent.

Brent residents will be able to access a range of services, resources, and wellbeing initiatives on offer in Harrow.

Anna Ware, CEO of Mind in Harrow, said: “We know that many people across Brent need accessible mental health support.

Expanding our services allows us to reach more individuals and communities, ensuring that no one has to face mental health challenges alone.”

Wem-believable! Stadium gears up for 34-show music marathon

Wembley is braced for its biggest summer of music ever, with a record-breaking 34 concerts set to bring around three million fans to the iconic venue between June and September.

The huge run of shows marks the highest number of music events ever staged at Wembley in a single year, underlining its status as one of the world’s top live entertainment destinations and cementing it as the mustvisit destination for live music in 2026.

The season got underway on 6 June with Capital’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard, featuring global stars including Take That, Raye, Niall Horan and Fatboy Slim.

Pop icon Harry Styles will host a record-breaking, sold-out 12-night Wembley run as part of his Together, Together tour. He is supported on all nights by renowned country-pop artist Shania Twain, who he has cited as a foundational influence on his music.

Styles will be followed by three nights of My Chemical Romance, a 6-night run for Bruno Mars, and more dates from Luke Combs, Bon Jovi, and Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh in an unforgettable summer of music.

Wembley Stadium brings major investment and opportunity to Brent More than a world-famous venue, Wembley Stadium plays an important role in supporting Brent’s local community.

Each year, the stadium contributes around £200 million to the local economy, helping sustain jobs, businesses and investment across the borough.

Working closely with Brent Council, the stadium also provides direct benefits for residents.

Each year, more than 20,000 complimentary tickets and over 1,000 free stadium tours are offered to local people, while around 5,000 schoolchildren have visited the stadium’s Learning Zone for educational experiences.

And since its introduction in 2023, the Public Space Protection Order has helped address antisocial behaviour, while a best-in-class approach has also seen the stadium improve traffic management and resources on event days.

A trip to the dentist RENTERS! YOUR RIGHTS CHANGED ON This summer, a new campaign is launching to help every child get the best possible start in life through better oral health.

In 2023/24, Brent recorded the highest percentage of five-yearolds with visibly obvious dental decay in England. Yet tooth decay is largely preventable and with the right support, families can take simple steps to protect their children’s health and wellbeing.

Good oral hygiene starts early. Brushing teeth twice a day, maintaining healthy lifestyle habits and visiting the dentist regularly all play an important role in keeping teeth healthy for life. The campaign is encouraging families to remember the easy “2-2-2” rule: brush teeth twice a day for two minutes and visit the dentist twice a year.

Regular dental visits are especially important for children, and NHS dental care is free for all under-18s. By helping families access dental care early, the campaign hopes to build healthier habits and brighter smiles across Brent.

Switch off, get smart: Schools call time on classroom mobiles Schools across Brent have pledged to support pupils in safe, responsible tech use.

The Brent PHONE pledge goes further than current government guidance, which says most schools should be phone-free, and supports schools to consider safe, useful ways students could benefit from the use of technology. Developed with headteachers, the pledge will ensure consistency across the borough, as well as providing clarity for pupils, teachers, and parents.

Anson Primary School Headteacher Simon Pile said: “As a Headteacher who has always embraced technology knowing that it can open doors to creativity, innovation and learning in our schools, the Brent PHONE Pledge serves to remind us that childhood must be protected.

“Schools should embrace the power of digital tools but also set healthy boundaries around personal technology use so that children can be protected, nurtured and educated with the aim of allowing them to thrive safely in both the online and offline world.”

Building a borough where everyone can age well Brent is taking meaningful steps to become an Age-Friendly Borough, a place where people can stay active, connected and valued as they grow older.

Part of a global movement inspired by the World Health Organisation, AgeFriendly Brent focuses on shaping services and spaces around the needs of

older residents, while celebrating ageing as a positive part of life.

With support from a dedicated AgeFriendly Coordinator based at Elders Voice, the council is listening. Through surveys, focus groups and community conversations, residents have highlighted priorities including safer streets, accessible transport, more local

Brent’s recent launch event brought nearly 200 people together, alongside local and London leaders, to share ideas and build momentum.

Free pianos strike a chord in local libraries

Free-to-play digital pianos have launched in Brent libraries, giving residents the chance to sit down, plug in and play!

Delivered by Brent Music Service in partnership with Brent Libraries and Casio, the pianos offered a unique headphoneonly experience, allowing people to enjoy music without disturbing the calm of the library.

The first piano was unveiled at Wembley Library on 27 May, with more set to arrive across the borough in the coming months.

Residents joined the launch event at Brent Civic Centre, trying out the instruments and celebrating an exciting new way to discover creativity through music.

Dance for change: Breaking the silence for survivors and women facing abuse Music and powerful storytelling will take centre stage this month as a special fundraising evening shines a spotlight on survivors of domestic abuse.

Hosted by the Asian Women’s Resource Centre (AWRC) in collaboration with ArchMan Music, the event will take place on 20 June and aims to raise both awareness and vital funds to support women rebuilding their lives after abuse.

The event will feature Bollywood inspired performances alongside powerful storytelling that brings to life the journeys of three women, exploring the hidden realities of domestic abuse, and the courage required to navigate love, loss, and liberation.

Through music and narrative, audiences will also learn more about how AWRC supports women affected by domestic abuse, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, safety and confidence.

Best Start Family Hubs to transform vital local early years support A new Early Years Strategy to make support for families simpler, faster and easier to access and give every child the best possible start in life has been launched by the council.

The ambitious new approach will focus on earlier intervention, stronger support for our youngest children with additional needs, and tackling inequalities before they become barriers to a child’s future.

At the heart of the strategy is a network of Best Start Family Hubs (formerly known as Brent Family Wellbeing Centres) welcoming local spaces where families can access advice, guidance and services from pregnancy through to 18 - and up to 25 for young people with special educational needs.

The Family Hubs bring health, education and family support services together in community settings, making services easier to access and helping parents and carers get the right support at the right time.

Residents are invited to attend the hub launch events to meet local professionals, find out about the support available through the hubs and connect with services including health visiting, parenting support, early education, childcare advice, speech and language development, SEND support, and activities for children and young people.

Dressed for success: pupils get help with uniform costs Families feeling the pressure of back-to-school expenses will receive extra support this year, thanks to a new pilot scheme to help with the cost of school uniforms.

Since April, the council has been issuing automatic vouchers to families with children starting Reception or Year 7 this September at a Brent school. The scheme is targeted at families living in the borough who are eligible for means tested Free School Meals, including families on Universal Credit. Eligible families won’t need to apply. Vouchers will be sent automatically via email or text message, with postal vouchers available for those who cannot access digital versions.

Brent shines bright for Pride month To celebrate Pride month, the Mayor of Brent was joined by residents, councillors, and the council’s LGBTQ+ staff network to raise the flag at Brent Civic Centre, which will fly across the month of June.

Cllr Amer Agha, the Mayor of Brent for 2026-27, said: “Each of us has a role to play in creating a workplace and a borough where everyone feels welcomed, respected and included.

Hate crime has risen in the last 10 years, with trans people a particular target. We don’t want that here in Brent for anyone residents or staff. At the heart of this is a simple truth: we are all people, and we all have equal worth.”

Wembley Park will also see the return of its fifth Pride celebration from 28 June to 5 July, with a full week of performances, music, and comedy open to all Brent residents.

Crackdown on crime gets tougher in Brent

Five knives have been recovered, over 1,000 stolen phones retrieved, and £3,000 worth of illegal drugs have been taken off the streets as part of ongoing police crackdowns in Brent this year.

Working with the council, the police carried out patrols in known shoplifting hotspots in Wembley, Kilburn, and Cricklewood, conducting traffic stops to check vehicles, and visiting retailers to ensure they are complying with regulations.

Cllr Liz Dixon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health said: “these crimes have a real impact on people’s sense of safety and on local businesses. By targeting offenders, removing weapons from our streets and seizing illegal vehicles, this operation sends a clear message that criminal and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated in Brent.”

Five-year ban for rogue landlord

A rogue landlord has been banned from renting out homes for five years after 18 tenants were found crammed into a Wembley house licensed for just seven.

Sanjay Patel, from Harrow, was fined £91,788 earlier this year after cramming more than 18 people into a house licensed for seven in Wyld Way, Wembley. This follows a £50,000 fine in 2024 for separate housing offences in Vivian Avenue, Wembley.

A tribunal has now issued an order banning him from letting housing and carrying out letting agency or property management work for five years.

Brent is sending a clear message: there is no place in the borough for landlords who put profit before people’s safety.

he council continues its strong relationship with local police to make sure that residents are safe and confident while enjoying what the borough has to offer.

You can expect to see increased police patrols, and the council will continue to work with local venues which have been given a green light from central government to open later than usual.

Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis, Head of Brent Neighbourhoods Policing, North West BCU, said: “We’re fortunate to have a very strong working relationship with Brent Council, youth services and other local partners. Together, we focus on tackling the root causes of antisocial

“We’ll also continue with focused enforcement operations, similar to Operation Terminos that recently took place in Kilburn and resulted in numerous arrests and vehicle seizures. R

esidents are taking charge and reporting fly‑tipping when they come across it.

In fact, the council has seen a 16% increase in the number of reports compared to last year – 97% of which have been cleared within 29 hours of reporting.

With more reports from residents, more enforcement officers, and more street sweepers, the council can act as quickly as possible.

Earlier this year, the council toured estates across the borough, offering residents of the properties the chance to get rid of their bulky waste for free, as well as get involved in cleaning up their local area.

Stephen is a community champion in Westcroft Court. He told us: “I’m More CCTV and AI cameras are helping to catch from Romania, and respect is really he perpetrators of huge fly-tips like this important. Sometimes others don’t show it by throwing rubbish everywhere.

In the place where I live, I want to be as helpful as I can. I want to pass this to my kids to show them what respect means and how to treat their local environment.”

It’s not just about reporting, either. More people are borrowing litter‑pickers from community hubs and libraries, taking pride in clearing small areas near their homes, schools and local shops. A quick pick‑up can prevent litter from spreading – and shows others that the community cares.

Did you know that rubbish placed in the wrong bin cost taxpayers over £300k* last year?

B

rent households may have spotted new bin tags earlier this year, asking residents to shake out their recycling from plastic bags with a simple reminder of what not to put in your recycling bin. Yet the same items keep turning up: nappies, food waste, plastic bags - even garden cuttings.

So, what actually happens after your recycling is collected?

At the N+P Crayford sorting facility, where Brent’s recycling is processed, Quality and Production Leader Jason Berko walks us through it. Each lorry unloads its contents into a designated bay, where staff carry out a quick visual check before sampling the load. Spot a black bag or

anything suspicious? That’s a red flag.

The load gets a closer inspection.

If it passes, it is moved into the main plant, where a team of 50 workers, backed by heavy-duty machinery, sort everything into materials like cardboard, cans and paper.

If it fails? The whole load is rejected and burned. That’s the catch. One wrong item can spoil an entire lorry.

“There’s actually far more that can be recycled than people think,” Jason says.

“Most everyday household packaging can be recycled and reused if it’s put in the right bin to begin with. But we are seeing lots of items that don’t belong in the recycling bin, and should go into other bins that are available.”

Sheliyah Petrie, 19 from Neasden, approached the council’s Brent Works team after deciding to change career. Coming from an administrative background, she wanted to move into a more dynamic, hands-on role.

B

rent Works offers free advice and support to residents looking for new employment and apprenticeship opportunities.

When an advert for a Level 4 Site Manager apprenticeship came up with A YM Roofing, Sheliyah applied despite not having a traditional construction background. She was shortlisted for her transferable skills, enthusiasm and preparation.

Sheliyah now works on Vistry’s Northwick Parkside project, where she’s gaining valuable hands-on experience while building her technical knowledge and confidence.

Sheliyah said: “This apprenticeship has been a great way to broaden my knowledge across many aspects of construction. It has also given me the opportunity to face new challenges every day. Each day brings something different, which keeps the work interesting and helps my confidence grow.

“I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship to others, especially women.

It’s a supportive environment where women can feel confident developing their skills, gaining hands-on experience, and progressing in an industry that is becoming more diverse. It’s a great opportunity to build a strong career, and be part of meaningful, practical work that shapes the infrastructure of the future.”

Sheliyah’s progression highlights the effectiveness of apprenticeships as a practical and accessible route into construction - particularly for women.

Planting seeds of love YourBrent spoke with local Foster Carer Barbara to hear about her fostering journey.

W

atching her children play, Barbara “decided I wanted to be a mum to young children again, and, when they were older and not so dependent on me, I would become a foster carer.”

16 years on, we asked how her children felt about her decision. “They were really supportive, and that’s when I finally applied. We’re now a foster family, and we all play a part. It’s been wonderful for us. My children have learned so much.”

Barbara cares for children aged 0-4.

“You can foster children of all ages, but I wanted to care for young children as, at that age, their minds are like sponges – they soak up information. You can help them understand the world and shape their early experiences. I enjoy capturing those moments, planting positive seeds so they carry that joy as they grow.

Fostering is about making a difference.

When children feel loved and supported, they can conquer anything. Seeing their confidence and radiance is an incredible feeling.”

A proud moment came when she cared for a baby with delayed speech and motor skills. “Once she was settled, she suddenly blossomed. It’s like her confidence grew overnight. She was full of energy, always on the move and singing nonstop. I know she’s going to be a star!”

Barbara hopes her story inspires others.

“If you’ve thought about fostering, it’s already in your mind and heart. It’s not as scary as you think, and there’s lots of support. Attend an introduction evening, ask questions, and meet other carers it’s a friendly and supportive community.”

The powers to protect women and girls The Reducing Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy (2026– 2029) was launched earlier this year to reaffirm Brent Council’s commitment to creating safer communities for women and girls.

W

e spoke to Chief Inspector Yu Zhang about how local government and statutory services work together to support residents.

Police are using advanced digital technology to tackle crime, including scanning and analytical tools that map offender behaviour, uncover networks of abuse and identify linked crimes. This allows police to plan proactively and target suspects more effectively.

Inspector Yu Zhang said: “By working with the council, we use innovative methods to catch offenders, including identifying breaches of tenancy where offenders are council tenants. We are always exploring different ways to target criminals.”

Violence Against Women and Girls remains a top policing priority, particularly during high-risk periods and large-scale events. With Wembley hosting more events over the summer, police are increasing their presence to protect the community.

“We deploy behaviour detection officers in pubs and bars to identify spiking and harassment, alongside uniformed officers carrying out stops and checks. At highfootfall locations and high-risk events, such as K-pop concerts attended by many young girls, we allocate additional resources,” Inspector Zhang added.

While significant progress is being made, more work is needed to tackle the root causes of violence and strengthen community trust. Inspector Zhang emphasised that public involvement is essential.

“It takes everyone in the community to challenge inappropriate behaviour.

I understand there is a lack of trust in the police and barriers to reporting abuse, but the more information we receive, the more precise our policing can be, helping us focus on the right areas, target the right offenders and safeguard victims.”

Harlesden’s sound Twelve commemorative paving stones now line the streets of Harlesden, celebrating the trailblazers who helped shape the UK’s reggae and alternative music scene.

T

he Harlesden Walk of Music pays tribute to icons from the Windrush Generation and the wider Brent community.

At the heart of the project is Cleon Roberts, founder of Harlesden Bassline.

Growing up as the daughter of Sonny Roberts, who established Britain’s first Black recording studio in 1961 and later opened a record shop in Harlesden, Cleon was immersed in music from an early age.

“I was under his wing from the age of six, learning the business,” she says. “I saw deals being made and how the shop became a hub for the community. That’s where my strong connection to Harlesden began.”

Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the idea for the Walk of Music came after Cleon presented at the anniversary of Harlesden’s reggae tree.

She recognised a gap in how local music history was being celebrated.

“Living in Jamaica, I saw how they honour their cultural legacy.

I wanted to bring that same spirit here,” she explains. “Harlesden has always been close to my heart, the warmth, the people and the Jamaican influence inspired everything we’ve done with Harlesden Bassline.”

Looking ahead, Cleon hopes the Walk of Music will continue to inspire future generations. Plans are already underway for an interactive and educational museum celebrating Brent’s rich musical heritage.

“Brent is the capital of Black music in Britain,” she says. “And now we’ve made it official.”

A newly unveiled mural in Brent honours three brothers whose journey from apartheidera South Africa to Brent became woven into the fabric of British football.

Among them is Brian Stein, who made history as the first player of African descent to represent England.

F

rom jumping fences to kick a ball around at King Edward’s Park to learning their craft at local schools, football was a constant in their childhood.

Edwin remembers the team who first fired his imagination, Chelsea of the late 1970s. “Everyone wanted to emulate what they were doing,” he says.

Mark, the youngest, watched his brothers blaze the trail ahead of him. “I looked up to my brothers,” he recalls. “I thought if I had even a smidgen of what they had, I’d be happy.”

At the heart of their story stands their father, whose life taught them that sport could be both self expression and resistance.

Under apartheid, he was arrested simply for boxing against a white opponent. When he arrived in the UK, his activism continued. He became deeply involved in the movement against apartheid sport, helping to establish SANROC, the South African NonRacial Olympic Committee, which worked to ban South Africa from international competition and challenge the racist regime.

“He was so forwardthinking,” Mark says. That lesson - do what you have to do, regardless of the obstacles, became a family philosophy. For Brian, it crystallised on the pitch. Playing for Luton Town, he helped deliver famous victories including a shock win over Liverpool, scoring within five minutes.

“Luton beating teams from the big leagues was unheard of. For me to get an England cap was amazing” Brian reflects.

Their careers lasted more than twenty years and was spent doing what they loved at the highest level. “We were fortunate,” one brother reflects. “It’s the best career in the world.”

And the story did not end at retirement. Through coaching, management and work in schools, the brothers have continued to pour their experience back into the next generation, ensuring young people have the grounding to succeed on their own terms.

Now, the mural stands as a permanent reminder of their football success and family legacy in Brent.

Get caught up, not caught out

Brent Health Matters – the borough’s health inequalities programme – is now offering Vaccine Catch-up Sessions at two Family Wellbeing Centres in the borough.

M

y little one got measles, and I don’t want anyone else going through that, Balkisa Kahie told YourBrent. “That’s why I am urging other parents to make sure they get their children vaccinated”.

“We’re giving mums and dads the opportunity to get any child that may have missed their MMRV jab a chance to catch-up,” explained Cllr Liz Dixon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health.

The new MMRV vaccine, introduced by the NHS at the start of this year, replaces the MMR jab, now protecting against chickenpox (varicella), as well as measles, mumps and rubella.

The threat of these diseases is both real and significant. At the start of the year a measles outbreak in Enfield led to 71 cases in just two months.

Measles can be deadly, with two UK deaths recorded in 2025 and five in 2024.

The Brent Health Matters MMRV Catch-Up Sessions are held every Monday at Curzon Family Wellbeing Centre, and every Tuesday at Fawood Family Wellbeing Centre between 10am and 3pm.

There’s no need to book an appointment, and both first and second doses are available. Health professionals are on hand to answer any questions you may have. Bring your red book if you can.

Q. Being born on a Wembley stairwell is unforgettable! How do you think that unique start shaped you?

A. My entry into the world was a literal fight for survival. I was born four weeks premature on a dark stairwell. The policeman had to use his flashlight and shoelaces to help deliver me since the ambulance didn’t show up in time. That instilled a sense of grit and resilience in me from day one. I carry that fighter spirit into everything I do.

Q. What did having fostering support mean for you?

A. My first foster family became my foundation. I’m so grateful for the memories we’ve built and the relationship we still have today.

Now, performing at local festivals like the Wembley Mela and Wembley Park Summer Fest feels surreal. Performing in my hometown always brings a different level of pride. I want to show people walking the same walk as me that their dreams are valid. I wasn’t always the confident rockstar people see me as today!

Q. Which hidden gems in Brent helped you find your creative voice?

My grandma circled dance classes in the Your Brent Magazine every summer, and the teachers who ran them really believed in me. Brent is overflowing with talent – I love going to Harlesden and seeing people dancing and playing music in the street. Those African-Caribbean influences really shaped me.

Q. Your EP “PHOENIX” came from a time of personal struggle.

How has music helped you navigate your mental health?

Career uncertainty and heartbreak hit like a knock-out punch. Growing up in the social media generation, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. Writing honestly about my struggles was a healing process for me. I want people to know it’s okay to ask for help.

Q. If you could go back to that stairwell, what advice would you give younger you?

Even in your darkest moments, hold onto your dreams. Your background doesn’t dictate your future; you aren’t doomed to fail just because of where you started. Reach out to friends, family, the council. There’s always someone ready to listen and help you find your way.

Stars shine at Brent Young Musician of the Year 2026 What a fantastic evening the Brent Young Musician of the Year 2026 Final proved to be.

S

ix outstanding young performers took to the stage at St Claudine’s Catholic School this March to showcase their talent.

The biennial competition, open to 13–18-year-olds who live or study in Brent, included six finalists: cellist Taichi Agatsuma (15, Neasden), flautist Evangelina Ghinea (18, Kingsbury), trumpeter Charlotte Grigg (15, Kensal Green), violinist Nolan Lobo (14, Wembley), vocalist Shanel Singhawansa (13, Colindale), and pianist Philip Siow (15, Preston).

On the night, Charlotte secured third place, Taichi was awarded second, and Philip Siow won the title along with a £400 prize and future performance opportunities. “I’ve been looking forward to this competition for a long time,” Philip said. “I’m delighted to have won, particularly with such great young musicians within Brent.”

A multi-instrumentalist, Philip describes the piano as closest to his identity: “It was my first instrument, and one of the only instruments that can create harmony and melody at the same time.”

Starting to play at six years old, Philip has already performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the Brent Youth Pops Orchestra, and has ambitions to perform there again.

Young people interested in music in Brent can explore opportunities through in-school programmes and local ensembles via Brent Music Service (BMS).

Shelf help at new Harlesden book nook

Harlesden shoppers are getting more than groceries, they’re getting a brand‑new burst of Black British brilliance, thanks to a bold new ‘Book Nook’ launched inside local Afrocentric store Pempamsie.

C

ommunity champion and founder of Pempamsie Basil Palmer has teamed up with Black-owned publisher Jacaranda Books to create the vibrant new literary space.

The mini‑bookshop, on Craven Park Road, is already turning heads and turning pages. At the heart of it is writer DD Armstrong, whose novel Ugly Dogs Don’t Cry has been hailed as a lifeline for young readers looking for stories that actually sound like them.

Armstrong, who discovered a love of literature while behind bars, says writing became his escape route. “Whilst incarcerated I was introduced to literature, and I fell in love with it. I started creative writing because it grounded me and removed me from environments,” DD shares.

During his time in prison Armstrong devoured titles like The Scholar by Courttia Newland, which reminded him of Stonebridge Park, and Brixton Rock by Alex Wheatle.

These authors would later become his mentors, affirming his belief that stories from young Black men in Britain deserve to be heard.

“It was affirmation that mandem can do this ting and there are audiences who want to listen to our experiences,” DD says.

Beyond writing, DD has led literacy workshops at Newman Catholic College, inspiring boys to engage with literature and improve their reading skills. His novel, a modern retelling of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men set in a college, explores friendship, masculinity, and social politics through the lens of two young Black protagonists. The book has even been added to the school curriculum.

“A young boy told me he read Ugly Dogs Don’t Cry and remembered a line about mindset after being thrown out of class. He realised he needed to change his ways. It’s good to know I helped somebody find a different avenue,” DD reflects.

“People crave stories in which they can see themselves, and this space gives the Harlesden community that first bite, something to spark their hunger for more, and then the whole menu of stories is waiting for them” DD says.

Kilburn takes This summer, Kiln Theatre are bringing a jam-packed 16 days of theatre, exhibitions and live music to Brent for the Kilburn High Road Festival!

F

rom Friday 31 July to Saturday 15 August, the festival will kick off with an intergenerational community play of 80 people aged between 6 and 88 on the main stage.

Critically acclaimed Kane Husbands and Izzy Rabey will be directing Sonia Jalaly’s Kilburn-based play.

After the grand opening, the festival hits the ground running with an outdoor exhibition of 11 pieces of art, commissioned for Kilburn. Discover new sculptures designed by Christianna Mason, adapted from original work by ActionSpace artists, then journey through the gems of Kilburn High Road through a series of portraits celebrating the heritages of local businesses by Roy Mehta.

There will be dancing in Kilburn Market, with exclusive live music from the fantastic Kilburn House Band, formed for the festival, alongside one-off screenings of legendary Brent films Babymother and Kings at Kiln’s cinema.

Three unique theatre productions will also take to the High Road. Take a walk with a site-specific audio play, created by Marika Mckennell or step into a Kilburn café to hear the story of 103-year-old lifelong resident Keith, in a new work written by Martha Haidari. Finally, get ready for big a night out in Kilburn through an exciting production celebrating parties of times old and new, by Nicole Latchana.

All of this is the culmination of 284 workshops and events with over 2,000 participants and 57 local organisations and artists which have made up Celebrating Our Stories: The three-year Kilburn High project that celebrates and platforms the heritages of Kilburn, and the festival promises to be the perfect finale filled with celebratory spirit.

These sportswomen include Celeste Stevens, Lorna Falconer, Jawahir ‘JJ’ Roble MBE, and Connie Henry MBE, who have all worked in different areas of the sports industry, including Football Clubs, competition, officiating, broadcasting, media, and charity. Every participant wins a sticker and can make a small craft to take home.

Celebrating International Reggae Day At The Brent Reggae Album Covers Exhibition

1 July 2026 6-8pm Harlesden Library Come to Harlesden Library for a special viewing of the exhibition and a talk by curator and historical musicologist Kwaku titled: ‘Where Would Reggae Be On The Global Stage, If Not For Migration?’ Kwaku will show how migration – from the Caribbean to the UK and beyond – powered the worldwide spread and evolution of reggae music, with Brent and Harlesden at the heart of that story, as well as other parts of London and key regional centres such as Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and Wolverhampton.
