Brent Council is very proud to welcome you to this new and exciting programme celebrating great books and reading during the month of October. There is something interesting, informative and fun for everyone with a wide range of events and activities in all our libraries and Brent Museum.

Highlights include: queen of British ska and lead singer

for platinum selling 2-tone band The Selecter, Pauline Black, and a riveting talk on the king of pop Michael Jackson the health information event, Chill Out, which features a range of health authors, workshops, pampering, stalls and special guest, life coach Tony Harrison talks from former Zimbabwean cricketer Henry Olonga and trail blazing boxer Errol Christie, as they discuss their new biographies a panel of successful British Asian authors at ImaginAsian, a celebration of Asian culture which will also feature Bollywood dancing, fun workshops, pampering and stalls 2

acting legend Earl Cameron discussing his long acting career and being the leading Black British actor for more than five decades the welcome return of Phil Vasili with a film screening and talk on black British footballers of the past the return of the Rastamouse authors to their Brent roots to celebrate Rastamouse Day a Halloween party featuring scary stories from children’s author David Grimstone and best selling adult author from the dark side Thomas Emson, children’s activities, fun workshops, pampering and stalls.

All events are free except where otherwise stated.

Family Learning: Children must be over five and accompanied by an adult (based on one adult with a maximum of two children).

Children’s Book Week 3 – 9 October

Monday 3 October Bookstart story and rhyme times for under 5s 10.30 – 11.15am Harlesden Library Plus 2.15 – 3pm Preston Library The Bookstart Bear will be popping into libraries to visit children under five as part of Children’s Book Week celebrations. www.bookstart.org.uk Tuesday 4 October The African experience in wartime Europe 11am – 1pm Willesden Green Library When Hitler’s Nazi Party came to power in March 1933, there were an estimated 24,000 citizens of African descent in Germany.

Freelance writer and Brent resident Akin Shenbanjo Jr, tells the story of their perilous existence under Nazi rule in which they would face persecution, forced sterilization, imprisonment and murder. To end, there will be a focus on African-American and British colonial troops where a war was fought on two fronts; against the immediate menace of the Nazi war machine, while burdened with the indignities of a deep-rooted institutional racism within the United States, and British armed forces.

Tuesday 4 October Pauline Black: Black by Design 7 – 8.30pm Harlesden Library Plus Lead singer for platinum-selling 2-tone band, The Selecter, Pauline Black has been in the music business for over 30 years. The only woman in a movement dominated by men, she was very much the queen of British Ska. Black was born in 1953 to Anglo-Jewish/ Nigerian parents. Adopted by a white, working class family in Romford in the fifties, Pauline was always made to feel different.

Weaving her rise to fame with her moving search for her birth parents, Black By Design is a funny and enlightening memoir of music and roots.

Tuesday 11 October Louise Levene: Ghastly Business 7 – 8.30pm Willesden Green Library Journalist and ballet critic Louise Levene, discusses the inspiration behind her novel, Ghastly Business which the Telegraph describes as “a riveting tale of an ingénue’s initiation into murky inter-war London.”

Wednesday 12 October Chill Out: a relaxing and therapeutic health programme 6 – 9pm Willesden Green Library An exciting health promotion programme of events providing information, guidance, advice and workshops that will give you the tools to improve your health and wellbeing.

Plus there’s stalls and pampering. Guest speaker, life coach Tony Harrison, will discuss his fascinating approach to life which he calls, Magical Relationships, Incredible Results. Tony will also run a seminar on this topic.

Art therapist Nicky Roland will be running an art for wellbeing workshop focusing on African art.

Brent Mind will run the Human Library where the person is the living book and attendees gain an insight into other people’s life experiences. Brent Mind is a local mental health charity. Thursday 13 October Stephen Bourne: Mother Country – Britain’s Black Community on the Home Front 1939-45 7 – 9pm Willesden Green Library Stephen Bourne’s Mother Country - Britain’s Black Community on the Home Front 1939-45 unearths a ‘hidden history’ of Britain and the Second World War. This illustrated talk will highlight some of the forgotten Britons he features in the book including the community leaders Dr Harold Moody and Learie Constantine, and black senior citizens who Stephen interviewed about the home front in Africa and the Caribbean. www.stephenbourne.co.uk 5

Monday 17 October Henry Olonga: Blood, Sweat and Treason 7 – 8.30pm Willesden Green Library Join Henry Olonga for a riveting talk on his book which was nominated for ‘Best Autobiography’ at the British Sports Book Awards 2011. Described as sports book meets real-life thriller, this is a sensational autobiography of the former Zimbabwean cricketer whose black armband protest against Robert Mugabe at the 2003 World Cup saw him branded a traitor, accused of treason in his absence and forced to dramatically flee his homeland and his family.

Wednesday 19 October Yasmin AlibhaiBrown: The Settler’s Cookbook – A Memoir of Love, Migration and Food 7 – 9pm Willesden Green Library Join Ugandan born British journalist and author, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, for a fascinating talk on why she wrote her family’s story, The Settler’s Cookbook, and how the stories evoked memories of food which were then brought to life by the recipes.

Thursday 20 October Errol Christie: No Place to Hide – How I Put Black in the Union Jack 7 – 9pm Willesden Green Library Join former professional British boxer Errol Christie, for an illuminating talk about racism in both boxing and 1970s/1980s Britain. Errol’s achievements include being captain of the English boxing team between 1980 and 1983 and becoming European champion in 1983.

The panel Moni Mohsin, Pakistani born journalist and writer. Her books include Tender Hooks and Diary of a Social Butterfly. Described as hugely entertaining journals of a socialite in Lahore, heroine, Butterfly, is ‘Jane Austen meets Bridget Jones‘ and Mohsin uses “her acid-tipped pen to poke fun at Pakistani high society and politicians.”

Sonia Faleiro is an award-winning Indian reporter and writer whose second book, Beautiful Thing: Inside the Secret World of Bombay’s Dance Bars, has been described as brilliant and unforgettable, and herself, one of the best of her generation.

Sunjeev Sahota, born in Derbyshire, published his first book in 2011 called Ours Are the Streets. It tells the story of a British Pakistani youth who becomes a suicide bomber. The Observer said: “In impressive debuts of the year...Sunjeev Sahota...audaciously attempts to make us feel sympathy for a suicide bomber.”

Children’s Book Week 3 – 9 October Rastamouse and the Easy Crew Michael De Souza, one half of the writing duo with Genevieve Webster, will delight children with the adventures of the highly acclaimed Rastamouse and the Easy Crew in an enjoyable storytelling and drama workshop. Suitable for primary school students in years three to six.

When I Was Joe Keren David will talk about the topical themes of her young adult novels including the multi award winning When I was Joe and Almost True - about a boy in witness protection - and Lia’s Guide to Winning the Lottery, which tells the story of a 16-year-old girl who wins an £8 million jackpot. These include knife crime, identity, justice, post traumatic stress disorder, sex, shopping and economics. Suitable for secondary school students.

Black History Month Black Flash: A Century of Black Footballers Inspirational historian Phil Vasili delivers a thoughtprovoking talk combined with the screening of the documentary which tells the stories of nearly 140 years of black footballers in Britain. Suitable for primary school students in years four to six and secondary school students.

School of dub poetry: Taking time to chat a rhyme Lennox Carty and Dr Gertrude Shotte deliver a dynamic workshop that combines thought provoking issues and creative writing in a thoroughly interactive and challenging session.

Lennox Carty is an internationally acclaimed award winning dub poet and creative writer. His work covers a range of issues that are associated with problems of today’s youths. He is also a trained youth and community worker.

Dr Gertrude Shotte is a lecturer in the School of Arts and Education at Middlesex University. She has a teaching career that spans primary, secondary and tertiary levels. www.lennoxcarty.com Suitable for primary (from Year 2) and secondary school students.

Brilliant Rappers Educate Intelligent Students BREIS (breeze) is a Nigerian rap artist based in the UK and the author of a book of lyrics and inspirations entitled Brilliant Rappers Educate Intelligent Students. His music is a fusion of hip hop, jazz and African rhythms. His songs are thought provoking, spiritual and infectious with humorous wordplay. BIN THE BLING: Why Reading Is NOT A Long Ting!

Writer, journalist and broadcaster Lindsay Johns delivers a dynamic, high octane and interactive motivational talk on the joys of reading and a love of books. Expanding young people’s cultural horizons beyond the confines of Brent, Johns touches on relevant questions of stereotypes, bling culture, street slang, the way we speak, dress and even walk. This will be a cultural potpourri of hard-hitting wisdom, anecdotes, questions and audience participation, covering many subjects relevant to young people’s lives, by affirming education and personal responsibility the whole way. www.lindsayjohns.com. The Greenhouse @ Willesden....Where Great Things Grow The Greenhouse @ Willesden is a new temporary animation and cultural programme developed by Brent Council. Creative people who would like to showcase their talent, hold an event, workshop or exhibition of work, are invited to participate in this programme.

Applicants may alternatively bring a business along and sell something or visually change the space all together. The programme is for anyone who can provide some form of engaging or inclusive exchange between an audience and themselves which can be enjoyed by all the family.
