Switch and save More families have signed up for the Big London Energy Switch in Brent than anywhere else, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds in the process.

Brent Council is supporting the scheme because it can help residents reduce the pressure of dealing with increasing costs of energy to power and heat their homes.

More than 660 local people signed up for the

latest round of the scheme, which enables householders to switch energy providers and negotiate lower individual bills through bulk buying. The vast majority of people have been able to save at least £50 a year with some recouping as much as £200 compared to their existing bills.

Happy birthday Fawood Brent’s first children’s centre has celebrated its tenth birthday.

The award-winning Fawood Children’s Centre, in Stonebridge, held a party

which included a feast of international foods brought by local people, a giant cake and lots of activities for the whole family. Fawood was officially opened in 2004.

Concerned about crime in Brent?

Brent Council and the police have been supporting the Mayor of London’s initiative to set up a new Safer Neighbourhood Board (SNB) in Brent.

The aim is to give victims and local people a greater voice in setting policing priorities and holding the police to account.

Brent connects Harlesden residents will have noticed something different about the town centre – the famous Jubilee Clock has been temporarily removed.

The clock, which dates from Queen Victoria’s jubilee celebrations, is being restored to its original glory as part of a councilled £4 million redevelopment that will transform the town centre. It will be back early next year.

On your side Councillor Muhammed Butt Leader of Brent Council I would like to thank the residents of our borough for putting their trust in me and my team in May’s local elections. The Labour Party was returned with 56 out of a total of 63 councillors.

Thirty-one new councillors were elected and several long-serving councillors departed. Many of them had given numerous years of service to Brent.

The next few years won’t be easy. Brent has already absorbed significant cuts from central government funding, and there’s more to come. With less money to go around, we’re going to have to think differently.

Brent Council has a plan to renew our borough’s sense of community. By changing the way your council works, we believe we can make life easier for you and the other 311,999 people who call our borough home.

Too many Brent residents are struggling with cost of living increases, which is why we’re helping local people to save up to £200 on their energy bills through a collective buying scheme.

We want to make sure local people can afford to stay local, so we intend to build 3,000 new affordable homes by 2018.

We’re going to help 1,000 of the most disadvantaged people in our borough into work and we need companies that want council contracts to take on and train up Brent residents.

Our children deserve the best possible start in life, so we’re investing £100 million to create 3,500 new local school places and drive up standards to make sure every single school in our borough is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ within the next three years.

Brent residents want clean streets, so we’re going to continue the crackdown on flytipping, which saw 668 people in Brent prosecuted last year.

We are faced with tough choices, but we know that – by teaming up with local businesses, charities, community groups and residents – we can build a Brent where people come together to change things for the better.

Pop star’s legacy for Brent schools Mitch Winehouse, father of the late singer Amy, has launched a new programme to deliver drug and alcohol education in some of Brent’s secondary schools.

The Resilience Programme is being delivered by the Amy Winehouse Foundation,

the organisation set up after the troubled singer’s death.

Mr Winehouse was the key speaker at the launch event in Brent Civic Centre.

He said: “Amy would be so proud of this programme.

If she were alive today this is exactly the kind of thing she would be doing.”

The programme will deliver a range of sessions including a parents’ evening to inform about underlying reasons for substance abuse, sessions that incorporate real-life stories and discussion groups that cover issues such as self-esteem, peer pressure and risky behaviour.

Community hub wins architecture award Brent’s Civic Centre has won an illustrious Royal Institute of British Architects National Award.

The landmark building, which opened in June 2013, is a community hub which

includes a state-of-the-art library, a registry office and exhibition and gallery space.

The move by Brent staff into the building has enabled savings of around £2.5 million a year.

Week of Action targets paan Sudbury and Wembley Central will be in the spotlight when the next Brent Council Week of Action kicks off on 28 July.

The Week of Action will see the council and partners focusing resources on the area and tackling a range of activities such as paan spitting, street drinking, cleaner streets and antisocial behaviour.

Residents will have the chance to meet their councillors, find out what’s happening in their area and feed back on our services.

Leader of the council, Cllr Muhammed Butt, said: “This is a fresh approach to tackling issues in particular areas of the borough, working with partners like the police, the voluntary sector and community groups.

“It's a way for us to work with residents to improve their local area. We’re encouraging everyone to get involved.”

What will Brent look like in the future?

There could be a cap on pawnbrokers, betting shops and payday loan firms on Brent’s high streets if policies governing how the council decides on planning applications are approved.

Local people are being invited to have their say on the draft Development Management Policies, which will help shape the borough for years to come.

Free childcare for eligible two year olds Parents with children coming up to their second birthday or who are already two years of age may be eligible for free childcare starting in September and are being urged to apply for it.

The council funds 15 hours a week of free childcare for children until the term after their third birthday.

It is provided by qualityassured childminders who offer valuable one-to-one care at their home or in one of the borough’s first-class nurseries.

The scheme is designed to help children get the best start in life and more than 1,000 local families already benefit.

HEY helps families to be healthy Nurseries and childminders have been recognised for their work in helping hundreds of local children get the best start in life.

The council’s Healthy Early Years (HEY) award scheme encourages nurseries and childminders to improve the health of the children they work with.

Over 840 children and more than 480 parents have been helped to adopt good habits in areas such as healthy eating, oral health and being more physically active.

In an event at Brent Civic Centre to celebrate the success of the scheme, the Mayor of Brent, Cllr Kana Naheerathan, gave a HEY award – a plaque designed to look like a healthy, green apple – and a certificate to participants.

Andrea Lagos, Brent Council’s Public Health Specialist, said: “This project has helped hundreds of local children learn the kind of habits which will give them the best start in life and, hopefully, stay with them into adulthood.”

First World War remembered Brent will remember the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War this summer.

The commemoration starts with the launch of Brent Remembers as part of the Digital War Memorial. Local pupils, community groups and residents will take part in creative workshops, with the results being added to www.historypin.com On 23 August, Brent will remember Willesden man

Charles Ernest Garforth, who was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1914. A stone will be laid in his honour.

Brent Museum and Archives will also be exploring the lives of five residents to understand how ordinary people were affected by the war.

Flytipper prosecuted Learning from Brent Teachers and educational officials from Kurdistan, a region of Iraq, visited Brent Council to learn about the British education system.

Brent Council is continuing to prosecute offenders in its campaign against littering and flytipping.

Afghan Bakery and Catering, trading as Afghan Bakery, of Church Road, Harlesden pleaded guilty to four offences of flytipping at Willesden Magistrates' Court.

The company was fined, ordered to pay costs and a victim’s surcharge, coming to £720 in total.

In a separate case, Richard Freeman, 54, of St Neots,

Cambridgeshire was convicted at Willesden Magistrates' Court of littering after throwing away a cigarette he had been smoking in Wembley.

Freeman, who was convicted in his absence, was ordered to pay costs and a victim’s surcharge totalling £220.

Dance duo dazzle Brent

Cheeky chaps, and Got To Dance winners 2011, Chris and Wes, bring spectacular Street Dance XXL UK and Global Championships to Wembley Arena this month, as part of Brent Dance Month, the borough’s annual celebration of dance.

How have your lives changed since winning Got To Dance?

Wes: “It has been unbelievable.We met in a gym as teenagers but since 2011 we’ve been up and down the country and around the world appearing onTV shows and doing presenting. It’s hectic, but incredible.”

How important are events like Brent Dance Month?

Wes: “Hugely important; there are so many great things about dance. It gets kids dancing and off the streets.”

Chris: “Dancing can provide a massive confidence boost. Shy kids, who might be unable to make friends, end up bonding with others and gaining confidence in all areas of their lives.”

Dancers of all ages and abilities will be shaking, shimmying and bopping across the borough throughout July as part of Brent Dance Month (sponsored by Network Stadium Housing). Highlights include:

Who inspires your amazing dance routines?

Wes: “When we were younger, people like Michael Jackson, but as we’ve gotten older we’re inspired by the young dancers we see.”

feats of skilled acrobatics but the sport isn’t as hard to get into as it may first appear. Short for bicycle motocross, BMX is one of the more affordable forms of cycling and is growing in popularity.

Now Brent Council has opened a track at St David’s Close – and a group of youngsters got the chance to give it a test run.

The riders were given coaching by the council, in addition to training sessions in schools, before hitting the track. They included eight of the budding BMX stars who represented Brent at the London Youth Games, where Brent’s team finished 19 out of 33 boroughs earlier this year.

David Pender, a quarter-finalist at the games, said: “It’s great! I’ll be able to use the track whenever I like because it’s free and close to home.”

The track is designed for all skill levels.

Mark Betts, Associate Head at St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School, said: “Previously our young people had to travel 45 minutes to the nearest facility – now we can get more youngsters into BMX and hopefully discover more young talent.”

The track is designed for all skill levels.

Obstacles are ‘rollable’ – allowing less confident riders to coast over each bump without losing momentum. Experienced riders can take the track at speed and negotiate the obstacles in different ways.

For cyclists less inclined towards launching themselves from ramps, a new family cycle route can also be found at the grounds, in addition to a scooter park for younger kids.

Club sessions are held on Saturdays at 1.30pm, all are welcome, and bikes and safety equipment is available. There’s no need to book, just turn up, and it’s free.

BIS includes this year’s summer reading challenge, with Brent’s libraries hosting a fantastic programme of storytelling, arts and crafts workshops, drama events, fun learning activities and, even better, it’s all absolutely free!

The Mythical Maze challenges children aged four to eleven to find their way around a labyrinth where they meet fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology.

Read six books and you can win stickers and prizes, while successfully completing the maze earns a medal and certificate. There will also be exciting competitions and the special Mythical Maze celebration.

If you were inspired by the Olympics, want to get fit or just have some sporty fun, BIS has the answer.

Get in the ring for a boxing course, jump in the saddle for horse-riding or try a nature adventure. There’s BMXing, sailing and lots more sporty fun.

Sports activities are forall abilities including beginners. All are free or affordably priced.

Meet your team Voters took to the polls in May to decide who will run Brent Council services – from refuse collections to parks – over the next four years.

Brent’s 2014 election results returned a Labour council with an increased majority.

Across the borough’s 21 wards, 56 Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat representative were elected. The Conservative Party secured six seats, including three in the Brondesbury Park ward, where the councillors have now formed their own political group, called the Brondesbury Park Conservative Group.

Cllr Lesley Jones will serve as Deputy Mayor, Cllr M Aslam Choudry is Chair of the new Scrutiny Committee and Cllr Sarah Marquis is Chair of the council’s Planning Committee.

Helping with housing

Brent is doing everything it can to help local people by providing more good quality, affordable homes and driving up private sector landlord standards.

The multi-million pound South Kilburn regeneration project is just one example of the work it is doing to provide quality homes for local people.

The old tower blocks are being demolished and the new high-quality flats have modern features, such as energy-saving insulation, and hugely improved security.

The council and partners will build 2,200 new homes – most to be let at affordable rents – by 2026.

Christine Field is one of those who has moved into a new home in CarltonVale built as part of the project.

Mrs Field, who is 68 and suffers from osteoarthritis, said: “I am really pleased I got this flat. It is 100 per cent better than where I lived before.

“It’s always warm and the bills are lower.

My old flat was freezing most of the time.

I know my neighbours and it’s much safer.

I don’t have to struggle to get into the bath like before because it has a wet room.

I am very happy here.”

Many other local people are being impacted by the housing problem affecting Brent and the rest of London.

Property prices in the borough have risen faster than anywhere else and rents have soared too – a one-bedroom studio can now cost as much as £170 a week, the same as a house in some towns outside the capital.

The shortage of homes means that some residents are living in poor quality, overcrowded accommodation.

It is impossible for one council to fix a London-wide problem like this, particularly when government funding for housing is being reduced.

However, the council is proposing

to start construction of its first new council homes in 30 years early next year and will also improve existing properties.

By 2019 the council aims to support the building of another 5,000 affordable homes – to be let out at below market rents or for affordable home-ownership. Many of the new rented homes will be bigger houses for families and construction will mostly take place in designated ‘growth areas’.

Due to massive over-demand, the council is only able to offer affordable, social housing to a very limited number of high priority cases. Most homeless people now have to turn to the privately rented sector.

The council hopes to raise standards in privately-rented flats like this, above, and to stamp out ‘beds in sheds.’

Due to its growing importance, raising standards in the privately rented sectoris essential if the council is to provide more good quality, affordable homes.

A new landlord-licensing scheme aims to deal with issues such as poor conditions and overcrowding, which badly affect some tenants, but also address anti-social behaviour by tenants themselves where this occurs.

The council is cracking down on landlords who break planning rules by letting out outbuildings in gardens.Tenants often pay high rents for cramped, unsafe or otherwise unsuitable ‘beds in sheds’.

Proposals are also being developed for a council-run lettings agency. But with the government’s welfare reforms putting caps

on housing benefit, renting in Brent is often out of reach for those on benefits.

The council has helped around 100 people affected by the benefit cap to find work over the past year and assisted others to move into much cheaper homes, which these days can often only be found outside the capital.

Cllr Margaret McLennan, Brent Council’s Lead Member for Housing and Regeneration, said: “We are being radical and forward thinking about how we deliver good, affordable homes and raise standards because this issue is of the utmost importance.

“There are a lot of constraints on what we can do, including the savings we have to make, but we are still very positive that we can make a difference to local people.”

Lucky strike!

Shakira Moses is a Brent Council apprentice, working in adult social care at Tudor Gardens care home. As part of her job, she organises a host of activities.

The 23-year-old arranges regular trips to the local ten-pin bowling alley for six adults with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and mental health issues. Her year-long apprenticeship contributes to the practical part of her Level 2 National Vocational Qualification in health and social care.

She said: “This apprenticeship is just brilliant for me. I’m getting practical experience, learning lots and also getting paid. It gives me independence and freedom and means I can pay my rent too.

“Every day in this job is different.We organise a wide range of fun activities for our care users. My job is to support them, make their lives as comfortable as possible and, most importantly, help them gain a sense of independence.

“The best thing about my job is making the care users smile and grow in confidence day by day.”

Maxwell Green, killed in 1915

Gone but not forgotten

As the centenary to commemorate the First World War starts this summer, the tragic fates of a group of young local soldiers have been uncovered.

In an aisle of St John the Evangelist church in Wembley is a memorial to local men who died in the First World War. The six wooden panels are engraved with 169 names.

The memorial was put up in 1920 in the parish church at the relatives’ request. “I was looking at the names and wondered who these men were,” explains Carole Bevis-Smith, a lay minister at St John.

“I had no idea. There are no more living relatives left connected to the church but, with the 1914 anniversary approaching, it felt like the right time to find out more.”

After two years of research, Carole has found out about the soldiers’ regiments, decorations and where

they fought. She has uncovered some poignant stories.

Henry and Charles Brown were two brothers who grew up in Dovedale Place, Sudbury. Charles was killed in 1916 and Henry died in 1918, with the Tank Corps. They were both aged 20.

Maxwell Green lived in Ealing Road, Wembley.

He was 19 when he was killed in 1915 in the trenches at Ypres. Maxwell was a keen naturalist who kept a diary at the front, observing the effects of the fighting on the local wildlife.

Others died at Gallipoli and in India and Africa, a long way from their homes.

“One can sense the effect the war

had on a community like Wembley,” adds Carole. “I’d love to hear from anyone who is related.”
