Dear Friends of Notre Dame High School, As we read through the pages of this magazine, we can’t help but be proud. We are proud of the achievements of our highlighted alumni. Their profiles and successes speak loudly of the very qualities we aspire to plant into the minds, bodies, spirits and souls of those young men and women who wear the blue and white today.

We are proud of our current students and our most recent graduates. Their achievements are well chronicled in the pages that follow. There you will find the athletic championships, the artistic triumphs, and the academic kudos that give testimony to a hard job Barry Edward Breen President

well done and prizes that are well won. Linger, if you will, over the mention of the 52,000 hours our students logged last year; over the 13,000 pounds of food they sent to Mercer Street Friends Food Bank and the 179,500 pounds of clothing they collected for the Rescue Mission of Trenton; the joy they brought to our senior citizens; the light they carried to kids in our inner city. Linger over the mention of the 312 students from the Class of ’16 who attended their four day Kairos Retreat last year and are out there “living the fourth” still, walking their walk and talking their talk. Linger and be proud that the tradition continues.

We are proud of our faculty. We lost two great ones last year. Through his work in guidance, Chris Collier helped hundreds of kids find themselves. And through her long and dedicated and often magical approach to teaching, Mary Ann Liptak opened the hearts and minds of countless students to the wonderful world of literature and to the beauty and joy of their own creative souls. Although both will be sorely missed, their spirit lives on in every ND teacher who emotionally engages kids every day in the pride and fulfillment of life long learning.

Over three generations now, NDHS has graduated people who are joyful in the light and hopeful in darkness; people who are resilient in defeat and compassionate in victory; people who understand the benefits and responsibilities of community and citizenship; people who are confident recipients of God’s unconditional love who have dedicated their lives to loving and serving others. . . people like you.

Finally, we are proud of all our donors who helped our Advancement efforts raise over three quarters of a million dollars last year. Without those investments, a good deal of what we are able to offer our students and faculty simply would not happen. Without those investments, we would not be able to move from good to great. We are grateful.

ND LEGACY ND LEGACY ND LEGAC Third TIME’S A CHARM Catherine Moscarello in the class of 1961, and Maureen Keenan in the class of 1963, started the legacy that led to Jimmy’s graduation as part of the class of 2016.

Jimmy’s mother, Shannon Keenan Moscarello graduated in 1987. Shannon Keenan Moscarello, Maureen Keenan, and Jimmy all played sports throughout high school while Catherine Moscarello participated in Performing Arts. “My family keeps coming back to Notre Dame because all of them have had great experiences here and credit their success in life to this school,” said Jimmy. “I am proud to continue that legacy, I also am sure that my children will be attending Notre Dame as well, and the same with theirs and so on.”

The Class of 2016 Celebrates Three Generations of Notre Dame Graduates Class of 2016 members Jesse Burnett , Jimmy Moscarello, Tyler Kmiec, Katie O’Reilly and Minas Kostis are now third generation graduates of Notre Dame High School. As is the Notre Dame tradition, legacy diplomas were awarded by alumni parents.

Jesse’s father, Richard Jesse Burnett, graduated from Notre Dame in 1984, while Jesse’s grandfather, Richard Joseph Burnett, graduated in 1962. All three generations were involved in Notre Dame athletics. Richard Joseph Burnett played football all four years, Richard Jesse Burnett played football for one year and ran track his other three, and Jesse continued the legacy by playing football for two years and running track for all four years.

“The atmosphere at ND is very welcoming. Not only does it provide a loving and caring environment, but our school has an outstanding athletics program coupled with competitive academics,” said Jesse. “Being a third generation student means the world to me,” he continued. “I t’s really nice going to the school where not only my grandfather attended, but my father and all my aunts and uncles as well. I think it’s really cool having a family legacy.”

CY ND LEGACY ND LEGACY ND LE Tyler’s father, Christopher Kmiec, graduated from Notre Dame in the class of 1997, and his grandfather, Christopher Robert Kmiec, graduated in 1972. ND athletics are important in the Kmiec family. Tyler and his father both participated in four years of baseball for Notre Dame, and his grandfather played freshman football.

When asked what keeps the Kmiec family at ND, Tyler’s response was, “Great education and family values while providing a great atmosphere to grow and become your own person. Being a third generation Notre Dame graduate, for me, means a lot,” Tyler continued. “ I get to follow in the footsteps of my father and grandfather, and it means so much to me to

continue the legacy the Kmiec family has at Notre Dame.”

Both of Katie O’Reilly’s parents graduated from Notre Dame: Brian O’Reilly ’85 and Chris King ’88 O’Reilly. Her grandfather, James King ’65 played Varsity Soccer for Notre Dame. Her Mother played Varsity Field Hockey and worked on the yearbook staff. A three season athlete, Katie’s father, Brian, played Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball and Varsity Baseball. Katie has chosen the stage as her playing field, performing in multiple musicals and dramatic productions and singing in the Madrigal Choir. “I t’s really special because I have been able to share my experiences at ND with my grandfather and with my parents,” Katie said. “And seeing my grandfather participate in the Golden Irish last year at Graduation, along with all of the other members of the Class of ’65, showed me that the Notre Dame Family runs deep. My parents are still very involved with Notre Dame and with teachers who taught them and who teach me now,” she continued.

Minas Kostis’ mother, Christina DiGuiseppi ’87 Kostis and his grandparents are Notre Dame graduates. His mother has joined in to support ND with parent organizations, this year serving as Chair of the Post Prom Committee. His grandmother, Gail McKenna ’65 Carr, performed in two musicals and worked backstage and as an usher for the spring musicals. She also was a student government representative. His grandfather, Frank DiGuiseppi ’65, also returned to Notre Dame for several years to teach Math.

“Being the third generation to graduate Notre Dame High School is so important to me!” said Minas, who has been active in Performing Arts and Peer Leaders during his four years here. “I t was a major reason in my decision to attend ND,” he continued. “Tradition and family are monumental to me, and I am so happy and fortunate that I was given the opportunity to follow in my family’s footsteps.”

While a trip to Cuba is still impossible for most US citizens, Mrs. Donna Grabowski, Notre Dame AP Economics teacher, traveled there this Spring as a part of an Economics for Educators conference.

This trip required a special Education Visa. The conference, which was May 28 – June 1, was a result of the research of a presenter whom she met last summer at a course at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City.

Twenty Economics teachers from across the United States gathered to study the new changes in the economic model for Cuba.

“A revelation to us was the uptick in private ownership of small businesses,” said Mrs. Grabowski. “We observed first-hand ‘La Lucha,’ the struggle for survival, as Cubans live on the equivalent of $20 per month.”

“In the midst of this Communist/ Capitalist balance, we admired the nationalistic pride of the Cubans, who seek to maintain their own

identity,” she continued. “I t is palpable how much Cuban people believe in their country!”

Mrs. Grabowski and her fellow travelers stayed for one of their nights in a small village in the Vinales Valley, one of the most beautiful places in Cuba. The other nights were spent in Havana.

“We found that these citizens are hard-working, loving people,” said Mrs. Grabowski. “They are survivors!”

As to the value of this trip for her students of Economics, Mrs. Grabowski looks forward to sharing her photos from Havana and the countryside. She will highlight the concept of Free Market/Black Market, capitalism/socialism and supply and demand. She will help them understand the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

“I would love to bring students to visit Cuba,” she said. “The value of a trip like this is that students can learn Economics in real time!”

ICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACAD Faculty RETIREES Notre Dame High School honored fOUR faculty members who retired this year: Roberta Anderson, Abiola Backus, Joe Coppola, and Judy Salcewicz. Their years of service, when added together, totals 113 years dedicated to educating our children.

Roberta Anderson left Notre Dame after 35 years. She taught in the Social Studies Department, serving as Chair for most of those years. Mrs. Anderson also dedicated many years as moderator of the National Honor Society.

Abiola Backus, who gave 22 years to Notre Dame, taught in the World Language Department. She also served as moderator of the French Club. Last year, she led students on a memorable tour of her beloved France.

Joe Coppola taught in the Religion Department for 17 years and served as moderator for the African American Club and the Justice Club. He was an active participant in many KAIROS and Caritas retreats throughout the years.

Judy Salcewicz taught in the Religion Department for 39 years, and in the 1980s gave birth to the Notre Dame Service Program. Through countless clubs, service projects and trips, she served the greater community and taught the value of service to our students.

In MEMORIAM Mr. Christopher Collier, passed away on January 18, 2016. Mr. Collier touched the lives of our

Notre Dame students in his more than 14 years as Guidance Counselor. “Mr. Collier cared deeply for the students he worked with as a Guidance Counselor,” said ND Principal, Mary Liz Ivins. “With his wise and gentle humor, he guided students through their struggles and concerns. We were blessed to have Mr. Collier as a member of the Notre Dame Family.”

Mr. Collier initiated the Instant Decision Days, beginning with students who were accepted for admission into his own alma mater, St. Francis University. As the initial contact with KAPLAN Test Prep, he involved students in SAT Prep courses online and at Notre Dame. As moderator and founder of the Semper Fido Club, he heightened student awareness of our military personnel who suffer Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He leaves behind his wife, Joan and their daughters, Rose and Meredith, both alumnae of Notre Dame.

Department for 44 years, and served as both Chair for English for most of those years and Chair for World Language for some of those years. She worked also on the Administrative Team and with the Valedictorian and Salutatorian speeches for many ND graduations.

The Notre Dame Family mourns the passing this extraordinary ND graduate, who began her teaching career here in 1972. Miss Liptak continued to open the minds and hearts of her students until the Fall of 2015. This master teacher enabled thousands of young writers to find their voices.

“She brilliantly invited her students into the wonders of literature,” said Ms. Ivins. “She will live on in their memories and through their successes, due in part to her impact upon their lives.”

Evan Schlosser 18 INTERNS AT UNITED NATIONS

Evan Schlosser ‘18, credits his participation in Notre Dame’s Model UN program with preparing him well for his summer internship at the United Nations.

Along with 19 other high school students from 10 different counties, Evan spent five weeks at the UN researching a topic of international concern, meeting with UN delegates, and attending committee meetings and sessions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.

The interns had full and unlimited access to the inner-workings of the UN and were able to immerse themselves in issues confronting our global society, especially in developing countries. Evan attended UN proceedings, such as the

Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, and the Security Council’s emergency meetings on global terrorism and security.

“I met with many UN officials and employees from non-governmental organizations, including the Regional Refugee Coordinator for the Sudan at the UN Development Programme, the head of Humanitarian Affairs at the German Mission to the UN , the Migrant and Refugee Affairs Officer at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Director for Displacement Affairs at Amnesty International, and a panel of experts from the Economic Recovery Unit of the International Rescue Committee”, said Schlosser. “All of these representatives expanded my world view and awareness of the struggles that people around the world face and the progress of developing nations, as well as the impact of the United States’ action or inaction.”

In addition to giving a statement

on behalf of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth at the High Level Political Forum of ECOSOC , Evan drafted a published report for a senior fellow at the Global Research Institute on a meeting discussing multi-stakeholder partnerships for implementing the 2030 Agenda. “We learned about many different faiths and cultures by visiting several religious sites including a mosque, a Sikh temple, and a Buddhist temple. We also preformed service work at various sites around New York City, such as the Bowery Mission where we served breakfast to the homeless,” he continued.

At the conclusion of his internship, Evan submitted a paper and gave a 1-hour presentation on his research topic: Improving the Economic Self-Reliance of Protracted Internally Displaced Persons. “My life-changing experience at the UN could not have been possible without the strong preparation that Notre Dame High School gave me through its Model UN program and academic coursework. I am grateful for my teachers and advisors for helping me to be a more informed and engaged global citizens,” he concluded.

ND Club Skypes with Members of the Feminism Club gathered in the Library to skype with club moderator, Ms. Pierucci’s fellow high school graduate, Lauren E. Bohn, a multimedia journalist and The GroundTruth Project’s Middle East correspondent currently residing in Istanbul, Turkey.

The GroundTruth Project

is dedicated to training a new generation of international correspondents in the digital age and to adding increased knowledge and understanding on issues of social justice including human rights, freedom of expression, emerging democracies, the environment, religious affairs and global health.

She was given the opportunity to experience the culture and music scene of Leipzig. “I t has been 30 years since my childhood in Germany,” said Mrs. Demaree, “so I am excited to rediscover my home country and all the changes that have taken place, especially in East Germany.”

Upon her return to school in the Fall, Mrs. Demaree has been sharing what she has learned with her colleagues in the World Language Department and applying these ideas to the Notre Dame curriculum.

“All roads lead from Leipzig,” she said, as the educational opportunities for young people are vast and manifold; the cultural life of the city is vibrant; the population very diverse; and everything is within reach via bike, tram, or other. Leipzig unites all qualities a city offers while being able to enjoy vast green and waterscapes. “In short,” she continued ”Leipzig is a city to fall in love with.”

v...vNotre Dame Faculty member, Mrs. Regina Koebele-Demaree is one of approximately 20 AATG (American Association of Teachers of German) members nationwide selected to participate in a prestigious three week summer seminar at the Herder-Institut at the University of Leipzig in Germany.

The program was sponsored by the Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Engergie (German Federal Ministry for Economy and Energy.)

This seminar for educators explored the integration of STEM subjects into the German language curriculum. In addition to observing classroom instruction, experiencing numerous workshops and designing instructional materials, participants

visited the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden and enjoyed a two-day excursion to Wolfsburg for a hands-on experience with leaders in the German auto industry.

“I am very excited about bringing the teaching of STEM into my German classes, said Mrs. Demaree. “We are teaching a future generation of global citizens, and we need to prepare them for the job market where they’re faced with technological and scientific innovations. These innovations weave a common thread around the world.”

ISTANBUL CORRESPONDENT During the Skype interview, club members learned about Ms. Bohn’s educational background, as well as how she applied and ultimately received her Fulbright Fellowship. She shared her experiences as a female reporter in the Middle East and the obstacles she has faced. She also answered many of the students’ questions regarding socio-political issues, reaching one’s goals, and

speaking up for others, especially girls and women.

Ms. Bohn is the co-founder of Foreign Policy Interrupted, a mentoring program dedicated to helping women break barriers and use their voices in the media. Club members learned about her work as the co-founder of Girl Up/ School Cycle, a United Nations-sponsored charity dedicated to providing

hundreds of Malawi girls with bicycles to travel to and from school.

Ms. Bohn has reported from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Israel, and many other locations in the region, and she has been published by New York Times, CNN , Salon, the Wall Street Journal, among others.

CATHOLIC MISSION CA DID Pilot FOR THE POPE YOU KNOW? CAMPUS MINISTRY Notre Dame Campus Ministry hosted the Diocesan Youth Conference.

Our ND “Catholic Athletes for Christ” met twice a month along with other Diocesan high schools, celebrating Mass, hosting national speakers, and taking part in RealFaith TV segments.

We host 7 retreats per year: ■ 5 Kairos (312 participants) ■ 1 Caritas (86 participants) ■ 1 FaithJustice (23 participants)

Our Notre Dame family was with the Pope on his visit to the United States in September 2015, not only in spirit, but in the person of Tom Murray. Tom, who served as first officer, was one of four pilots who flew “Shepherd One” during Pope Francis’ stay in the United States.

Tom has been a part of the Notre Dame family for the past 10 years. He and his wife Donna, are the proud parents of three Notre Dame Alumni, Jonathan Murray ’09, Abigail Murray ’11 and Laurel Murray ’13. Two years after their youngest child graduated, Tom and Donna are still very involved with the Notre Dame community. Tom is currently a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and Donna sits on the Advancement Committee.

The Murrays have always made their Catholic faith an integral part of their lives. Prior to Notre Dame, their children attended St. Paul School in Princeton, where both served on the school board, Tom as Chairman.

During his tenure, the school board received the NCEA 2005 Outstanding Boards of Catholic Education award. Donna is currently a member of the Parish Council.

Tom is not only a firm believer in Catholic education but in his words, “Catholic Service and the Catholic Family Identity.” The Catholic faith and values are the foundations for their lives centering around family. So for Tom, serving the Pope in this way was a “… dream of a lifetime.”

Notre Dame High School began its anti-bully commitment over fifteen years ago. The campaign originated in the ERASE Club (End Radical Actions Separating Everyone) and has branched out to numerous schools and after school programs.

“ERASE students brainstormed ways to solve problems they recognized,” said former ND Community Service Director, Mrs. Judy Salcewicz.

“Activities began with bringing awareness to our school community.”

■ 200 caring bags for women fighting breast cancer ■ Broke the world’s record at 179,550 pounds of clothing for the Rescue Mission of Trenton ■ Weekly visits to the elderly at Morris Hall and Morris Meadows

■ Special bags (diabetics, hygiene bags, children’s lunches and dinners) for Trenton Area Soup Kitchen

Some of the earliest programs included Kindness Day, where individuals were recognized for small acts of kindness with posters and intercom announcements reinforcing the message. From these beginnings an antibully service program was born.

Notre Dame ERASE Club members, Peer Leaders and Service Honors students then worked together to develop activities to create a community outreach program. Over the years students have taken interactive programs to entire grammar schools.

The hands-on activities are age appropriate and begin with warm fuzzy coloring books for kindergarten students, focusing on the importance of kindness, to skits for 8th graders based on their own words submitted in student developed surveys. Second graders have responded to an activity where they wear symbolic band aids as a reminder that words hurt just as

much as cuts.

Each activity has been revised and improved as the program has been presented throughout the community. An anti-violence grant enabled them to develop even more activities that they shared with student leaders from area high schools. So strong was the commitment to this message, that Notre Dame students joined with Special Olympics to create and facilitate Respect pep rallies for the entire student body.

As part of the service program at Notre Dame, freshman, sophomore and junior students participate in a community service day every year.

The anti-bully program has visited numerous schools in the area including schools in Hamilton, Trenton, Lawrence, Ewing and Yardley bringing anti-bully activities into each classroom for every grade.

Carly’s sketches were displayed at the NJ Law Center on March 21. A gallery showing began on Thursday, March 24, with a reception for family and friends prior to the opening.

Carly is the sketch artist for the Notre Dame Mock Trial team led by Mrs. Eileen Palazza.

To create their winning entries, the student artists traveled to a local county courthouse to sketch the mock trial team from their schools in action.

Her sketch was chosen for this award from among sixty-five entries from ten high schools. The judges included two professional courtroom artists.

Carly is only one of six freshmen who were recognized with this award.

Michael Murphy transferred to Notre Dame at the beginning of his junior year, 2014, seeking to find a warm and safe environment as his YouTube success began to grow.

Notre Dame agreed to work with his busy schedule, business trips, and events.

Michael began creating videos when he was 13 years old, but did not begin uploading videos to YouTube until he was 15 years old, under the persona, Mikey Murphy.

In those two years, he studied the media, and found strategies that would help him grow his audience.

He learned marketing skills such as how to target a certain audience and demographic group, how to market, and how to draw in advertising companies.

He became very active in the film club, finding people with similar passions and interests as his. He especially enjoyed Film Production class with Mrs. Bonnie Clawson ‘96 Milecki, who claimed, “I ended up learning a few things from him!”

“Some people may think that Michael Murphy is lucky,” she said. “But, he was not lucky. He knew exactly what he was doing, and worked hard to achieve the fame he has now.”

“He has a multitude of talents,” said Mrs. Milecki. “He can produce, write, act, edit. He has everything going for him.”

In Los Angeles, Michael is working on several projects concurrently.

He is teaming up with Ambin Entertainment on a full length feature and short film, which he is writing, directing and producing. Ambin Entertainment’s founding director and producer is Steven Spielberg, with company headquarters located on the backlot of Universal Studios in California.

Michael is also writing, executive producing and leading in an untitled romance film, and he is starring in a movie called Status Update.

His Film Production teacher Mrs. Milecki corresponds with Michael and has passed along some comments from her former student. “I am producing, writing and directing a series of short films,” said Michael.

“I have officially started my production company, Bad Habit Films, partnering with Jonah Green,” he continued.

Michael and his management team have also begun work with a charity, the Thirst Project, which provides well water, primarily for people in developing countries.

As for how his friends and teachers might catch up with Michael, they will undoubtedly seek him out in local movie theaters, as his career brings him to us on the screen.

Eight students were recognized with an “Excellence in Art� award between all 2D, 3D and Graphic Design art classes during the Spring Arts Festival.

TS ARTS ARTS ARTS ARTS ARTS AR Performing ARTS...ANYTHING GOES! The Notre Dame Performing Arts Department presented Anything Goes as this year’s spring musical.

This was Mr. Gibilisco’s second time directing the show Anything Goes. Notre Dame’s first production of the show was in 1995. Both Mrs. Milecki and Mr. Chebra were Notre Dame students at the time and participated in the show, with Mrs. Milecki as a member of the cast, and Mr. Chebra as part of the crew.

Since it has been quite a long time since Notre Dame presented this show, Mr. Gibilisco took a different approach to the music, choreography, and set for this production.

“We updated the script, rearranged some of the music and created fresh choreography,” said Mr. Gibilisco. “We built a much grander set, with an authentic look to the ship. And the costumes were much more extravagant, staying very

close to the time period.”

Mr. Gibilisco has also kept in close contact with the cast, crew and orchestra who participated in the 1995 performance of Anything Goes. After posting a video of this year’s cast rehearsing on the Performing Arts Alumni Facebook page, he received a resounding response from alumni, expressing their excitement to come back and attend the show.

In fact, two alumni, John Zefutie ‘96 and Brandon Szeker ‘02, came to Notre Dame to join the panel of judges for auditions.

Many of the Anything Goes alumni enjoyed a special reception prior to the performance on March 11, and enjoyed reconnecting with each other and with Mr. and Mrs. Gibilisco.

Christmas at Notre Dame has included for quite a few years the production of a video by our Film Production students, wishing our alumni and parents a “Merry Christmas!”

This year, Mrs. Bonnie Clawson ‘96 Milecki and her Film students settled on a one-shot lip dub video, starring the entire ND student body, faculty and administration.

Senior Miichael Murphy ‘16 (see related story, page 13) joined in on the preparation and contacted Mariah Carey, who gave us permission for the use of her song, “All I Want for Christmas is You.” “Shooting a one-shot video took about 45 minutes of set-up and actual filming,” said Mrs. Milecki. “Clean-up took three hours. Organizing, obtaining props, scheduling and planning the route took the better part of 6 weeks!”

The highest honors an Irish Athlete can receive are the Scholar Athlete Award and the Athlete of the Year.

The Head Varsity Coaches nominate and vote on the winners. The criteria are as follows: To be eligible for Athlete of the Year, the student-athlete must play multiple sports and have a high degree of success on the field, court etc. The Scholar Athlete of the Year can play a single sport but must excel in that sport and have a high degree of success in the classroom.

Julia Panko is Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Valedictorian of the Class of 2016, Panko was a four year Varsity Starter for the Irish and broke the school record for most career goals with seventy-six. In her senior year, she led her team to a Colonial Valley Conference Championship, a Mercer County Tournament Championship and an NJSIAA Non Public South “A” Sectional Championship. During her stellar career, she was named an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association. She was named All-Region by the NSCA multiple times.

She was named to the Mercer 33, All County and all CVC multiple times.

“With academic standards in mind, Julia chose to attend the Stevens

Institute of Technology,” said Director of Athletics, Rich Roche. “There she will major in Engineering and no doubt engineer a few victories on the soccer field as well.”

Male Scholar Athlete of the Year is Mike Walley. Mike was a two sport athlete who maintained an overall grade point average of 95.20. Walley is headed to the College of New Jersey where he will major in Economics and play both Basketball and Baseball. On the basketball court, Mike was a four year letter winner. As a senior, he led his team to a Mercer County Tournament Championship, a Colonial Valley Conference Championship and a 27-3 record. The 27 wins is an ND record for wins in a season. Walley holds the Notre Dame High School record for most three point shots made in a season with 70 and was selected all CVC and All-County multiple times. On the baseball diamond, Mike was a three year starter at First Base and Pitcher.

He batted .320 with an on base percentage of .445. Mike was recipient of the Father John Coaches Award and was selected to the 2016 Carpenter Cup. “There is no doubt that TCNJ is getting a winner in Mike Walley,” said Roche.

S ATHLETICS ATHLETICS ATHLETIC and Athletes of the YEAR The Female Athlete of the Year was a three sport athlete who captained two teams and was no slouch in the classroom either. Olivia Cleale ran Cross Country, played Basketball and dominated on the Lacrosse Field. The Cross Country and Lacrosse Captain maintained a grade point average of 96. Cleale is also headed to the College of New Jersey where she will play Lacrosse and major in Engineering.

After dabbling in soccer for two years, Olivia switched to Cross Country where she lettered twice and became one of the programs top runners. She was recipient of the Coach’s Award this year.

“On the basketball court, Cleale was a two year Varsity letter winner and was a key component of a team that won the Mercer County Championship, a CVC Championship and finished with a 25-4 record,” said Roche. “However, it is on the lacrosse field where Olivia truly

excelled.” She was a four year varsity started who finished her career with 147 goals and 120 assists. She led the team to three consecutive CVC Championships and back to back Mercer County Tournament titles. In her four years, the team advanced to the Group III South State Tournament semifinals twice and finals twice. Cleale was named AllCounty and All-CVC three times. She was also an Academic All-American in 2015.

The Male Athlete of the Year, Jake Liedtka, was also a three sport athlete who played Football and ran Winter and Spring Track. On the football field, offensively, Liedtka grabbed 18 receptions for 450 yards and 7 touchdowns this year. On the defensive side of the ball, he had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown. He was named All West Jersey Football League and was the Team’s Offensive Most

Valuable Player. In Winter Track, Jake had an outstanding season in the 55 High Hurdles and the High Jump. In the 55 High Hurdles, he won the NJSIAA Non Public “A” State Championship and finished 7th at the Eastern State Championships. In the High Jump, Liedtka finished second in the NJSIAA Non Public “A” State Championship. “In the Spring Season, Jake was simply incredible,” said Roche. At the Mercer County Coaches Classic, he finished first in the Pentathlon, establishing a new meet record. In the Mercer County Championships, he finished first in the 110 High Hurdles and second in the High Jump.

Jake and his team excelled in the East Coast Relays, and in the Non Public “A” Sectionals, qualifying for the New Jersey Meet of Champions. Another outstanding student, Liedtka received a Football Scholarship to Lafayette College.

AL STATEMENT FINANCIAL STATEM 2015/16 EVENTS Golf Classic The 28th and 29th ND Golf Classics were both held during the 2015-16 School Year due to weather. The events held at Jericho National Golf Club and Jasna Polana TPC respectively, raised over $65,000 combined for Tuition Assistance.

We had a total of 244 golfers and 42 generous sponsors participate in these two successful events.

Golden Irish The class of 1966 had a great weekend celebration.

On Saturday, June 11, over 30 people attended Mass in the ND Chapel and a reception in the Library. After that, their reunion continued at Mercer Oaks, with nearly 100 people celebrating. On June 12, 25 graduates were members of the Honor Guard leading the Class of 2016 into their graduation at the Sun Bank Center.

Denim and Diamonds Our ND Signature Auction Event, Denim and Diamonds, was held at The Stone Terrace in Hamilton, New Jersey. I t was a dazzling, fun filled evening with our own ND students performing, silent and live auctions, plus dinner and dancing.

Over 200 guests attended and we raised $70,000 for technology investments.

Polar Plunge This past January, 90 brave plungers ran into the icy Atlantic and raised over $10,000 for the Jean McGraw Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund. This Polar Plunge for Catholic Education was sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians and held in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Athletic Hall of Fame In April we hosted our 8th Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner.

The evening included a mass in the chapel followed by dinner and awards in the cafeteria. There were 220 guests in attendance for this milestone event. 2016 Honorees include : Harold Adams ’85, Bob Bottoni ’73 (In Memorium), Amy Cooke ’95 Vannozzi, Mike Grant ’04, Joe Hubal ’71, Kristen Mahon ’07 Lewis, Cheryl Nerwinski ’82 Chianese, Adam Shemansky ’07, Derek Shunk ’04, Tiquan Underwood ’05, Coach Joe McLaughlin, Special Award - Marion Wilson ’67 Doherty, 1989 Football Team and the 1974-75 Soccer Team. Sabrina Campelo ‘14, a sophomore physics major at Elon University, gave a podium presentation at the University of Maryland, College Park on Irreversible Electroporation (IRE), an emerging cancer therapy. .

Nancy Cashel `79 Faherty stood with Mercer County Executive, Brian Hughes to take the oath of office to serve on the Commission on the Status of Women. Doing so during Women’s History Month made it even more meaningful.

After spending the 2013 and ‘14 NFL seasons with the New York Jets, his future was in doubt last December when the Jets moved on from head coach Rex Ryan and his staff. But just two weeks later, Oszvart received an unexpected phone call from the Bills that he won’t soon forget.

Jeff Lamendola `02 and Kelly Brennan `04 Lamendola welcomed into the world their son, Nicholas Jeffrey Lamendola born at 9:35 p.m. on August 7, weighing in at 8lbs. 9oz. Congratulations!

Elizabeth Watson `06 attended American University in 2010 and most notably earned her MBA from The University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business. Presently, Elizabeth is the Director of Brand Marketing at 2U, Inc.

Roberto, Esq. `04 has been appointed to serve as an Associate Editor of the New Jersey Family Lawyer, the official publication of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. The NJFL is one of the most prestigious and scholarly publications of the State Bar Association, Family Law Section. As an Associate Editor, Tom will assist with reviewing topics, editing articles, planning issues, and communicating with potential authors and senior editors.

Tom attended The College of New Jersey for his undergraduate studies where he received a Bachelor of Arts in English and an Interdisciplinary Concentration in Law and

Society. He earned his Juris Doctor at the Widener University School of Law, graduating with Dean’s list honors and distinction for pro bono service. While in law school, Tom worked as a Certified Legal Intern in the Pennsylvania Civil Law Clinic. Upon graduating from law school, he served as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Terrence R. Cook of the Burlington County Superior Court, Family Division.

Tom was born and raised in Mercer County and has volunteered with the New Jersey Special Olympics, Mercer County, and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. He joined Adinolfi & Lieberman, PA in 2012, and will continue to focus his practice on all aspects of family law including divorce, custody, support, civil unions, domestic violence, and other related family law issues.

During the Saint Joseph’s University commencement exercises on Saturday, May 16, Brian Hammer `95 received the Health Administration Award for top academic achievement in the program. Brian earned a Master’s Degree in Health Administration from the College of Arts and Sciences demonstrating academic excellence across a variety of disciplines and was among the University’s most distinguished graduates.

Ryan McNamara ’08 recently accepted a new position as a Corporate Governance Analyst with The Vanguard Group. He is now working to help protect Vanguard shareholders’ interests by conducting Environmental Social & Governance research, engaging with corporate board of directors / senior executives, and by voting at corporations’ annual meetings on behalf of the Vanguard funds. Stephen Bondi ‘07 and Franki Vicini ‘08 married on June 11, 2016 on Long Beach Island, NJ. The two started dating at Notre Dame in their junior and senior years.

Luke Anthony Brown `15 graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC , on November 20, 2015. He then went on to Combat Training and graduated from MOS school - for Motor Transportation-at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on March 23, 2016. PFC Brown is now stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California.

Matthew Herbert ‘12 and Kevin Stimmel ‘12 graduated from Sacred Heart University this May. Matthew was a 4 year Division I Varsity Wrestler who received the Alvin Clinkscales Unsung Hero Award at the Athletic Awards Ceremony.

He graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and will be continuing his education in pursuit of a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Kevin was a 4 year Division I Varsity Fencer at Sacred Heart and received his Athletic Honor Society Award at the Athletic Awards Ceremony. He graduated with a degree in Athletic Training.

Tony Reres ‘84 and Joanne Mule’ ‘84 Reres, were married on February 12, 2016.

They reside in Lawrenceville, NJ and collectively have four daughters, Kaitlyn, Kristen ‘13, Jade ‘14, and Zara ‘17.

Bob Picozzi `68 was selected for the WSOU Hall of Fame. WSOU is the student radio station at Bob’s alma mater, Seton Hall. He was inducted into their Hall of Fame on April 14, 2016.

Lionel de Bernard `67 has garnered several national and international songwriting awards, including awards from songwriter industry notables such as TAXI, Unisong International, Spree Select Nashville and others. In addition, Lionel has several song publishing contracts to his credit.

Justin Daisy `14 (shown here last year on one of his first days at (Army) boot camp. Strength Coach, John Mckenna worked with Justin before he left and had this to say about him, “So proud of this young man and his strength of character... a true patriot.”

After NDHS, Kristina Muehleisen `85 McSalis graduated from Trenton State College, married, moved to Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, Graduate School of Library and Information Science. She and her husband had two children while in Texas, then moved to Virginia and had another child. They now live in Vermont where Kristina is the Circulation Librarian/Volunteer Coordinator for the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library and volunteers for Lyric Theatre Company. Her love of musical theatre bloomed while she was at NDHS, and Kristina credits the program and teachers. Her three children are now a junior in college, a senior and a freshman in high school. She and her husband just celebrated their 25th Anniversary.

CLASS NOTES CLASS NOTES CLASS Notre Dame ALUMNI TWINS RECEIVE COLLEGE ACCOLADES Notre Dame alumni Brendan McNamara ’12 and Colin McNamara ’12 were recently acknowledged for their accomplishments as they ended college careers at William & Mary and University of Chicago respectively.

Brendan was recognized at William & Mary with the Ewell award.

This award is presented annually to 40 William & Mary graduates for “outstanding participation and leadership and for their service and contribution to William & Mary.” The recipients were recognized at the university’s “Night of Excellence.” ND alumna Bee McLeod (ND ‘79, W&M ‘83, W&M ‘91 MBA), and husband Goody Tyler, (W&M HON 2011) attended as Brendan’s guests, seen below with William & Mary President, W. Taylor Reveley, III.

Over his four years at William & Mary Brendan was involved in running the university’s high school Model UN conference, serving as an aid to the President, and as a tour guide and interviewer for the Admissions Office. Brendan attributed much of his success in these activities to his experiences in Model UN and Peer Leadership while at Notre Dame.

Brendan graduated from William & Mary with a double major in Finance and Government. In the business school he completed a concentration in Business Analytics. Recently,

Brendan began working in New York City at a tech company in their advertising department. “I am most looking forward to working in the new World Trade Center building,” said Brendan at his graduation ceremony.

Colin attended the University of Chicago and since his Freshman year was involved with Health Leads - a national organization that partners college students with primary clinics to help under-served patients acquire community resources that help enable healthy living.

Colin won awards as Best Advocate in the program and was the first student in his graduating class to oversee Health Leads as a Program Coordinator. He spent some time working as a Research Assistant at the University of Chicago Medical Center to learn about how physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants used their time while on the job. Colin also served as president of the UChicago gymnastics team.

On scholarship, Colin recently entered an Accelerated MSN program at Emory University. Following the completion of this program he will be eligible to take the licensing exam to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. “My decision to apply to nursing school rather than medical school was made in order to allow me to start working as a primary care practitioner sooner with an education in treating people, not diseases,” said Colin.

Although twin brothers Colin and Brendan were practically inseparable throughout their time at Notre Dame, they found the transition to colleges in different parts of the country manageable. They made sure to visit each oth-

Brendan said, “As twins, being in two locations for college has only separated us physically. Colin and I are as close today as we were driving to Notre Dame together each day our senior year, four years ago.”

Both Colin and Brendan talked about how the rigor of Notre Dame’s classes helped prepare them for college life. The opportunities in extracurriculars allowed both boys to find their passions early and then continue pursuing them in college.

Brendan offered advice to future ND graduates by saying, “Starting college can be daunting because of the many unknowns, but sticking to your instincts and maintaining a level of curiosity and commitment to yourself and academics will set a student straight for their success.”

Colin also shared some thoughts, “During your next move at ND or when you start college, never think you have to go through the process alone. Be open to meeting new people; allow them to shape your experience and help you figure out what you want to do.”
