Synopsis
"In the Heights" is a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes, set in New York's Washington Heights. It follows Usnavi, a bodega owner dreaming of returning to the Dominican Republic, and his community as they navigate dreams, love, and challenges like gentrification. With a vibrant mix of hip-hop, salsa, and soul, the show celebrates home, family, and belonging.

Welcome to our school musical "In the Heights"! It's thrilling to see the culmination of months of hard work from our talented and committed students shine on stage, a testament to their power of collaboration, creativity, and passion.
"In the Heights" celebrates community, culture, and the pursuit of dreams through the music and lyrics of LinManuel Miranda, transporting us to a world filled with joy and the universal desire for a better life.
Our student-led cast and crew have poured their hearts and souls into their performances and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this musical come to life at Teatro Tapia. I am incredibly proud of them!
I am also grateful to our volunteers and community members for their support, encouragement, and enthusiasm, which have been instrumental in making this year's school musical successful.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST
Nicolás Rivera Millón, lovingly known as Nico, is elated to end his SJS musical career by taking on the role of Usnavi, made famous by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Nico has been a part of SJS musicals since the 4th grade and has had stand out roles such as Sonny in Grease and Mendel in Fiddler on the Roof. He’s also participated in other SJS projects like Almost Maine and La pasión según Antígona Pérez. Nico is grateful to his parents, especially his mom, Ana Millón, who has been greatly involved in the musical for so many years. He also extends his gratitude to Marian and Ivana for always giving him the opportunity to do what he loves, and Laura for supporting his growth as an actor.

Following her SJS musical debut as Frumah-Sara in Fiddler on the Roof and her performance as Antígona in La pasión según Antígona Pérez, Yael is happy to add Nina Rosario, one of her dream roles, into her musical theater resume. Outside of SJS, she has participated in over a dozen musicals and plays, including starring roles in Annie (Broadway Illusions), Shrek (Broadway Illusions), Once on this Island (Teatro CeDIn), and Hairspray (Broadway Illusions). Yael would like to thank her parents for supporting her since her first theater experience, and for continuing to support her as she embarks on her college career in musical theater and acting.

Ilusha is playing Benny and he couldn’t be more excited about his second participation in the school musical. He debuted in 2023 as Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof and was a part of the cast of La pasión según Antígona Pérez later that same year. Outside of theater, he enjoys eFoiling and water polo. He would like to give a warm shoutout to his mother and grandmother for supporting him and his artistic journey, including his potential theater and acting path at a collegiate level.

Mónica takes on the role of Vanessa in her 7th musical at SJS. She adds this role to a long list of performances that include the Gingerbread Man in Shrek, Rizzo in Grease, and Chava in Fiddler on the Roof. She also recently starred as Pilar in the school’s production of La pasión según Antígona Pérez. Mónica has been training in classical vocal performance for eight years and is exhilarated to potentially continue her theater and music career at a collegiate level once she graduates in two years. She is eternally grateful to her parents and friends for their love and support.

Verónica Levis, Vero for short, makes her main cast debut this year as Abuela Claudia, following her performance as Bielke in Fiddler on the Roof, SJS’s 2023 spring musical. She’s been involved with the musical since 2019 and has been training in classical vocal performance for several years. Vero would like to thank her mom, dad, and two brothers, as well as her own abuela for always supporting her.
Favorite Song in the Show: Hundreds of Stories
Amir is elated to take on the role of Sonny for his last performance at SJS. He’s been a part of the school musical since 2017 and has excelled in roles like Donkey in Shrek, Eugene in Grease, and Yente the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. He most recently played the role of Aurora in the school’s production of La pasión según Antígona Pérez. Amir is also a Poetry Out Loud Puerto Rico champion and a passionate filmmaker who will continue his artistic endeavors at university come August of this year. He would like to express his gratitude towards his parents, sibling, and all of his friends.

Natalie is Daniela, the owner of the salon and the biggest gossip in el barrio. This is her third SJS musical performance after being cast as Jan in Grease and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. Doctor Dalmau, as she is lovingly called by friends and peers, was also part of plays and musicals in her previous school, appearing in roles like Anna in Frozen, Young Simba in The Lion King, and Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. Natalie is looking forward to college, where she will continue to participate in performing arts activities. She thanks her mom, her dad, her bonus mom, and her built in best friends, a.k.a. her sisters.

Dana is excited to be playing Carla! She takes on this role after being dance captain in both iterations of Grease and being featured as Shprintze in Fiddler on the Roof. Outside of school, she’s been a member of Andanza for over a decade and has participated in productions and events like Talentos de Mi Pueblo (Broadway Illusions), Súbete a Mi Moto (Amazon Prime), Gordita Chronicles (HBO Max), Teatro en la Capital, and San Juan Moda. Dana looks forward to growing in the arts at a collegiate level and beyond, especially as an actor and dancer. She is filled with gratitude towards her parents for supporting her in everything she does.

From a ghost in Addams Family to Young Fiona in Shrek, to her multiple roles in last year’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, Sara Beatriz is grateful for the experiences and memories the musical has gifted her. Sara will continue following her passion for the arts through filmmaking, which she will pursue at university. She would like to thank her mom, Iliana, for always taking her to rehearsals and getting involved backstage year after year.

Alejandro Madero celebrates his third year as part of the musical cast taking on the role of Kevin Rosario, the owner of the dispatch, facing difficult decisions. Previously, Alejandro had the opportunity to play Roger in Grease and Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof, as well as participate in the theater showcase as the piano accompaniment. Outside of performing, Alejandro stands out for his commitment to Model UN and other organizations. He thanks his parents for their support and commitment.

After his triumphant return to the SJS musical last year as Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof, Lorenzo is thrilled to play Piragua Guy for his Senior year musical. This school year, he had the opportunity to play Creón in La pasión según Antígona Pérez alongside several of his current cast members. Aside from theater, Lorenzo’s passion lies in music; he’s been studying it at El Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico for five years and his work as a film composer was nominated at the Ponte Los Cortos Festival in 2023. He’s also pretty funny. However, he doesn’t joke around when expressing his gratitude towards his family, Marian, Ivana, Ana, Marilynne, Natalie, and Laura.

Roni joins the musical this year after his cast debut as Doody in Grease in 2022, marking his fourth participation in the SJS musical. He also steps up as one of the two dance captains for In The Heights! Outside of school, Roni has been involved in projects such as Súbete A Mi Moto (Amazon Prime) as Ricky López, Gordita Chronicles (HBO Max) as Nick, Virtuosos, and Teatro en la Capital. He looks forward to continuing his performing arts career at a college level after graduating in 2027. Roni is beyond grateful to all his family for supporting him and always believing in him.

Brianna makes her cast and soloist debut as Yolanda after two years in the musical ensemble, a perfect way to end her SJS musical journey! She wants to thank her family for their support throughout the years, and Ivana and Marian for their dedication and commitment even through difficult times.

Carlos is joining the musical for the second year after his debut as the Innkeeper in Fiddler on the Roof in 2023. His love for music and theater also led him to star as Mr. Mushnik in the Long Lake Camp for the Arts’s Little Shop of Horrors, and to be a part of the Periodistas in La pasión según Antígona Pérez. He’s excited to potentially continue his theater and music journey at a college level. Carlos would like to thank everyone involved in the production of the musical, including his mom, and his good friend Eugene for no reason in particular.

Isabel is thrilled to be a part of the featured cast of In The Heights! Isa, as she is known amongst her friends, participated in Broadway Revue in 2021 and in Fiddler on the Roof in 2023. She also played Monseñor Bernardo Escudero in the school 's production of La pasión según Antígona Pérez. Outside of school, she was a member of the Mean Girls the Musical ensemble with School for the Performing Arts. Isa is thankful to her family for all their love and support, as well as her best friend for being such an important part of her life for the past four years.

Melrose has been a part of the musical ensemble since the 5th grade. This year, she debuts as one of the company’s Dance Captains! She would like to thank Marian and Ivana for always being patient, and her mom and dad for driving her to and from rehearsal every day and for their unending support throughout the years.
