WELCOME TO THE BRIGHTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018 A warm welcome to our most international festival yet, and many thanks to all who have made it possible. We live in uncertain times and much of the world appears to be in crisis, yet many of our events point to parallels in history that resolve in unexpected ways. And there is always music! As we go to press with this year’s brochure we also have anxieties over growing pressures on funding, but already people are coming forward to help support the more vulnerable events as part of our new ‘Concert Sponsor’ scheme. OAE TOTS – THE WORLD AROUND US A 45 minute concert ideal for 2-5 year olds with their parents and carers – younger children also welcome. Includes an opportunity to meet the Orchestra after the concert. Reach for the stars and the sun and the moon! Come and join the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in an interactive concert for the youngest of music lovers. The heavenly music of J S Bach will be our launchpad as we play, sing and dance across the universe. Tickets: £5; under 12s free

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION The Bassanos and their contemporaries in England

FROM THE FOUR CORNERS OF EUROPE Renaissance polyphony spanning the Continent Workshop for choral singers with some experience Led by Greg Skidmore A day of musical journeys around the north, south, east and west of Europe. Composers include Carlo Gesualdo from Italy in the south, Duarte Lobo from Portugal in the west, Jacob Handl from Slovenia in the east, Jean Mouton from France in the centre and David Peebles from Scotland in the north. VOCAL SOUND AND STYLE 1450-1650 Conference in collaboration with the National Early Music Association This two-day international conference is aimed at the interested general public as well as academics, students and professional and amateur performers. A range of talks, discussions, practical workshops, masterclasses and short performances will cover many aspects of a vivid and historically informed approach to singing renaissance and early baroque music.

LA CONTENANCE ANGLOISE The English style in medieval France Sollazzo Ensemble
Anna Danilevskaia director, fiddle Perrine Devillers soprano Vivien Simon tenor Vincent Kibildis harp Sophia Danilevskaia fiddle BREMF 2018 opens with a fascinating example of an English cultural export in the 15th century: the so-called contenance angloise. This new musical fashion took Europe by storm, revolutionising compositional techniques and taste. Initiated by John Dunstaple and Walter Frye, this English style was then adopted by composers such as Dufay and Binchois and introduced to the Burgundian Court, the epicentre of musical innovation at that time. Pan-European Sollazzo Ensemble, winners of the 2015 York Early Music Competition, bring their vivid style of performance to this intimate and profound music that still speaks to us through the centuries. LEGAL ALIENS: THE BASSANOS IN 16TH-CENTURY LONDON The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble Gawain Glenton, Conor Hastings, Nicholas Perry cornetts Emily White, Tom Lees, Adrian France sackbuts Robin Bigwood keyboards While Tudor monarchs pursued international conflicts abroad, at court immigrant musicians like the Ferraboscos and the Venetian wind-playing Bassano family were still free to arrive and thrive. The Bassanos brought with them the latest dazzling playing techniques and an unrivalled skill in the making of wind instruments. They also performed an international repertoire of music by Italian, Flemish and English composers including William Byrd and John Cooper (such an Italophile he changed his name to Giovanni Coprario!). Politically, England was suspicious of foreigners; the Bassanos were even beaten up in the street for ‘looking a bit Spanish’. BREMF Community Choir Andrew Robinson & Joe Paxton directors The Cluniac Priory of Lewes was part of a monastic network spanning medieval Europe and sharing much music. This concert, newly devised for the atmospheric spaces of St Bartholomew’s Church, presents music from the 13th-century Lewes Breviary, including a vivid dramatisation of the story of St Thomas Becket. Also included are rousing pilgrim songs reflecting the pan-European nature of pilgrimage journeys. 8 visit

BEFORE THE EU: THE HANSEATIC WAY an illustrated talk by Rodrigo Calveyra director of Canto Fiorito The Hanseatic Way operated between the 13th and 17th centuries and linked many cities in Northern Europe from London to Tallinn. This event introduces the history of this great trading league and the musical culture that flowed along the trade routes. Highly recommended for those planning to attend the concert with Canto Fiorito and Musica Antiqua Salzburg on Sunday 4 November.

The Hanseatic League was a successful alliance between major cities of 11 countries in Northern Europe, from London to Tallinn, which dominated trade in the North and Baltic seas from the 13th-17th centuries. Like an early version of the European Union, it promoted tolerance and respect towards different cultures, ensuring the survival of one of the most spectacular alliances in Western history.

The Spanish Armada and the Italian madrigal Fieri Consort

But for a change in the wind, the Spanish Armada would almost certainly have succeeded in invading these shores with untold consequences. In the same year, the first Italian madrigal anthology with English texts crossed the Alps; a peaceful invasion that encouraged a craze for all things Italian, especially the singing of madrigals. The beautiful young voices of Fieri Consort sing passionate madrigals from the anthology Musica Transalpina, alongside sacred Spanish gems from the time of Mary Tudor’s marriage to Philip II of Spain, and other works reflecting rich cultural exchanges between England and the Continent.

REFORMATION REMAINERS Musicians, zealots and loyalists in Tudor England BREMF Consort of Voices Deborah Roberts director
Many historians have pointed out the similarities between the English Reformation (the break with Rome) and Brexit (the break with Brussels). Most notably, the country in each case becomes fiercely divided with passions running high. This programme looks at the lives and music of three Tudor composers: John Taverner, born a Catholic but drawn towards the be-leavers in Lutheranism and repenting his ‘Popish songs’; Thomas Tallis, who remained loyal to Rome his entire life; and his friend and pupil, William Byrd, who converted to Catholicism and wrote music covertly bemoaning the fallen state of England. Music includes movements from Taverner’s splendid pre-Reformation Missa Corona spinea, Tallis’s Lamentations and works in English and Latin by all three composers. BOOKING INFORMATION Booking for concerts opens to members of the Friends of the Festival Scheme (see page 18) on 28 August and to the general public on 10 September. Prom tickets can only be purchased on the door. For information on registration for BREMF workshops (Events 2 and 3) and the conference (Event 4) please see below. There are four ways to buy tickets in advance for concerts promoted by Brighton Early Music Festival:
HALF PRICE TICKETS FOR CONCERTS AND WORKSHOPS
1. E-tickets: you purchase these from bremf.org.uk, print them on your own printer and bring them to the concert together with the credit card with which you made the purchase. There is a £1 handling charge per transaction for e-tickets.
These are available for all concerts and workshops except Events 1, 10 and 12 to young people (age 12-25 inclusive), full time students and those in receipt of Universal Credit (or equivalent benefits) or Pension Credit (but not state pension alone). If you need to be accompanied by a carer who would not otherwise attend, we can issue them with a free ticket – please phone 01273 833746 to arrange this. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult; however, a Child Ticket must be obtained. Unaccompanied children under 16 cannot be the responsibility of the festival.
2. Online Box Office tickets: you purchase these online but have the tickets issued to you either by post or on the door. There is a handling charge of £2 per transaction for online Box Office tickets. 3. By post using the form on page 23 (£2 handling charge). 4. By phone (£2 transaction fee + 50p postage) or in person from the Brighton Dome Ticket Office, Church Street, Brighton BN1 1UE (01273 709709), open Mon-Sat 10am to 5pm. Bookings for Events 2-4 cannot be handled by Brighton Dome Ticket Office. Please note that tickets, once paid for, cannot be refunded except in the event that the concert is cancelled. Seats are not numbered and are unreserved, but for most main festival events we provide an informal seat reservation service for BREMF Friends at Supporter level and above.
BOOKING FOR WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCE Pre-registration at bremf.org.uk is essential for BREMF workshops (Events 2 and 3) and the conference (Event 4). Deadlines are given on the website, but in all cases booking may be closed earlier if all places have been allocated.

PROM TICKETS A £5 Prom Ticket can be purchased (subject to availability on the day) on the door only for Events 5-9, 11, 13, 14 and 16-19. This admits you to a standing place (SP) or a restricted view seat (RVS) depending on the venue.
FESTIVAL TICKET SPECIAL OFFERS Save 30% with our Season Ticket. A Season Ticket costing £189 gives you a top price seat at all Main Festival concerts (Events 5-19) subject to availability of tickets at the time of purchase. If the top price seats for an event are sold out, we will supply the next best available. Season Tickets can ONLY be obtained from bremf.org.uk or by using the postal booking form in this brochure. Save up to 20% with our group rate savings for multiple tickets for a single concert - reductions start at 10% for a group of 10. Please phone 01273 833746 for group bookings.
