Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners,
It’s been a truly rewarding year at The Breman with many moments of discovery, joy, and inspiration. Our multifaceted public programs — exhibitions, performances, special events, and educational outreach — encourage meaningful conversations and celebrate culture with a broad audience both Jewish and non-Jewish. All of our core program areas of Holocaust education, archival collections, and arts and culture programming reached new achievements in FY24 that we are proud to share with you in the Annual Report.
The Lillian and A. J. Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education launched the Teacher Ambassador Program in partnership with the Museum of History & Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University. Funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, the purpose of this initiative is to improve Holocaust education in schools by training more invested, competent teachers. The inaugural program this past summer sent 18 teachers from 14 Georgia counties on a four-day trip to New York City where they were immersed in Jewish culture and history. In November 2024, teachers spent a week visiting important sites in Munich, Dachau, Nuremberg, and more. Plans are in the works for more international trips for future cohorts.
As story-keepers of Jewish traditions, history and heritage, the Ida Pearle and Joseph Cuba Archives for Southern Jewish History is home to the largest repository of Jewish archival material in the Southeast dating from 1756 to the present. Last year the archives began a project to digitize our Leo Frank collection to give more people access to our most researched topic. In 2024, the project was completed and is now available online at the Digital Library of Georgia. The collection includes 33 images and text documents relating to Leo Frank, a factory worker who was lynched in 1915 by a mob inflamed by Frank’s Jewish identity and sensationalized commentaries on the murder of Mary Phagan.
Arts and culture at The Breman provide a pathway to create a more connected community and for visitors to experience a shared humanity in profound and moving ways. This year, three of our arts and culture projects received recognition for excellence:
The Breman and AIB Network co-produced a four-part series “A Taste of History with Chutzpah – Remarkable Stories from the Southern Jewish Adventure.” Hosted by Audrey Galex, the series highlighted selected stories from The Breman’s “History with Chutzpah” exhibition. In April 2024, the series was honored with a Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council.
The Breman also partnered on the development of a documentary film based on our 2020-2021 exhibition of jazz photography by the late Herb Snitzer — “Glorious Days and Nights: A Jazz Memoir” — produced by Bob Judson and scored by Joe Alterman. The documentary premiered at the Tampa Film Festival and received a Spotlight Documentary Film Gold Award. GPBTV broadcast the program in June 2024 and has nominated it for a Southeast EMMY Award.
Lastly, “Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski” co-produced by The Breman and Theatrical Outfit, won Outstanding Production of a Play, and Andrew Benator won Best Performer at The Suzi Bass Awards.
As we continue to share the many dimensions of the Jewish experience, we give grateful thanks for your ongoing support and engagement as The Breman continues to thrive in creative and important ways. More than 1,200 people attended a Bearing Witness event.
The Summer Institute for Teaching the Holocaust (June 4 - 6, 2024) served 35 educators from six states. Presented in partnership with Kennesaw State University Museum of History & Holocaust Education, the Institute provided attendees with resources and best practices for teaching this difficult history. This year also launched the Teacher Ambassador Program for Holocaust Education funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. In June, 18 Georgia alumni of the Summer Institute were immersed in Jewish culture, history, and Holocaust studies during a trip to New York City as they prepared to facilitate professional development in their own communities.
The 59th Annual Yom HaShoah Community-Wide Holocaust Commemoration on May 5, 2024, jointly sponsored by Eternal Life-Hemshech, The Breman, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, included the story of the Memorial to the Six Million at Greenwood Cemetery. This year’s featured speaker was Holocaust survivor George Rishfeld. Infant George was saved from the Vilna Ghetto in Poland when he was thrown over a barbed-wire fence into the waiting arms of a family friend who risked her life to protect him throughout the war. The event, which was covered on all local news stations, also featured remarks by Senator Jon Ossoff.
Other Weinberg Center Activities
• Virtual lecture “History of Antisemitism: The Truths and Mysteries of Leo Frank,” featuring The Breman’s founding archivist Sandy Berman, and co-presented with the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
• Rabbi Joseph Prass and Ariana Gil appeared on the Downtown Dialogues podcast and presented special tours and talkbacks in conjunction with the play “Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski.”
• Rabbi Joseph Prass joined a panel discussion with the Atlanta Ballet on “The Complicated Legacy of Coco Chanel” and the deeper history of her antisemitism and Nazi collaboration during World War II.
• Hosted attendees of the The Olga Lengyel Institute (TOLI) Leadership Institute Conference.
• Provided Survivor Speakers for the Israeli Consulate’s October 7th program.
• Provided tours for local law enforcement including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
• Partnered with the Michael C. Carlos Museum for a docent swap with each group touring the other’s venue.

The Hamm Family Papers (1920–1989) were donated by the Mitchell family. Richard and Greta Hamm were Holocaust survivors who escaped Germany by way of Shanghai, China.

Recent Accomplishments
• Joel Silverman, Visiting Curator of Digital Art and Time -based Media, received a Matterport Social Impact Grant to implement LiDAR scanning technology to make 3D digital scans of objects in The Breman’s collections.
• The Cuba Family Archives hosted an Archives Day with workshops on family genealogy, collecting oral histories, and tips for preserving photographs.
• The popular Historic Jewish Atlanta Tours series presented a walking tour of Oakland Cemetery with historian Dr. Marni Davis.
• The new Holocaust Artifact Experience lets tour groups have a closer inspection of some of the objects in the archives’ collection and how they tell the story of the experiences of victims and witnesses of the Holocaust.
• The Esserman Family Reunion Project collects oral histories from family members of Jule and Rose Esserman Levin who were strongly committed to Civil Rights during the 1950s and early 1960s. Archives staff have been collecting stories to add to our existing collection of materials from the Essermans.
• The archives is partnering with Jewish Community Legacy Project (JCLP) on their “Small Town Reunions” project to collect and preserve oral histories from small Jewish congregations in an effort to reinvigorate small town Jewish life in six states in the South.
• Continuing to grow the oral history collection and make them available online is a major objective of the archives. Notable oral histories from the past year include Ann Uhry Abrams, Doug Hertz, Jane Feiler, Cathy Selig, and Rabbi Peter Berg.
• The Breman is developing an online and in-person tour of historic Jewish Atlanta using ArcGIS software. Interactive icons on a map will highlight locations throughout the city with corresponding information and images on the building or location history. One feature of the in-person experience will be the use of augmented reality that illustrates the landscape’s evolution over time. The tour will provide a sustainable online presence for The Breman that connects people to Jewish history, culture, and arts.
Arts & Culture
As a cultural center, The Breman highlights the immeasurable contributions of Jewish culture and outstanding creative expression both locally and globally through exhibitions, live performances, artist talks, workshops, and more.
