Vorwort Die Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy verfolgt die Absicht, sämtliche erreichbaren Kompositionen, Briefe und Schriften sowie alle anderen Dokumente seines künstlerischen Schaffens in wissenschaftlich angemessener Form der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Als historischkritische Ausgabe will sie der Forschung und der musikalischen Praxis gleichermaßen dienen.

Im Vordergrund stehen die musikalischen Werke; von ihnen sind nicht nur die vollendeten Kompositionen in all ihren Fassungen, sondern auch die Quellen des Entstehungsprozesses (Skizzen und Entwürfe) ebenso wie die unfertigen Kompositionen (Fragmente) vorzulegen. Daneben ist die von Mendelssohn geführte Korrespondenz außerordentlich wichtig. Die Erkenntnis, dass die zuverlässige Edition der Briefe für die wissenschaftliche Erschließung eines kompositorischen Œuvres unabdingbar ist, gilt allgemein; bei Mendelssohn indes gewinnt die Korrespondenz, die den Komponisten als Zeitzeugen er­sten Ranges ausweist, durch den hohen literarischen Wert vieler seiner Briefe besondere Bedeutung.

Schließlich dürfen – will man ein umfassendes Bild des Künstlers Mendelssohn bieten – die bildnerischen Werke, vornehmlich Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, nicht fehlen. Ein thematischsystematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke (MWV), das 2009 in einer Studien-Ausgabe erschienen ist, soll dazu beitragen, den raschen Zugriff auf das Gesamtwerk zu fördern.

Angesichts der Bedeutung Mendelssohns einerseits und dessen wesentlich von außerkünstlerischen Motiven verursachter Vernachlässigung durch die wissenschaftliche wie praktische Rezeption andererseits bedarf selbst ein so umfassend angelegtes Konzept kaum der ausführlichen Rechtfertigung. Die von Julius Rietz zwischen 1874 und 1877 vorgelegte Werkausgabe, oft irrig Alte Gesamtausgabe genannt, war alles andere als vollständig und – anders etwa als die alte Bach-Ausgabe – keineswegs von der Intention getragen, das Gesamtwerk von Mendelssohn vorzulegen; sie hieß dementsprechend bescheiden Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchgesehene Ausgabe. Die von Rietz getroffene Auswahl hatte zur Konsequenz, dass ein beträchtli­cher Teil der Kompositionen Mendelssohns bis heute noch immer der Veröffentlichung harrt und ein weiterer bislang nur unzulänglich publiziert ist. Daran haben die wenigen Bände der seit 1960 im Deutschen Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, erschienenen Neuausgabe kaum etwas ändern können.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe schließt hinsichtlich der zeitlichen Disposition der zu edierenden Kompositionen an diese Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys an, trägt aber grundsätzlich dem neuesten Standard der Editionsprinzipien wissenschaftlicher Gesamtausgaben Rechnung. Dies bezieht sich namentlich auf die Maxime, dass alle Herausgeberentscheidungen – sei es im Notentext selbst, sei es im Kritischen Bericht – kenntlich und dem kritischen Nachvollzug des Benutzers zugänglich gemacht werden. Darüber hinaus entspricht die Ausgabe der heute allgemein akzeptierten Überzeugung, dass alle Stationen des Entstehungsprozesses bzw. der vom Komponisten verantworteten Verbreitung (Skizzen, Fassungen, selbstverfasste Versionen wie Klavierauszüge) zum Werk selbst gehören.

Diese Auffassung trifft ganz besonders in der spezifischen musik­ historischen Situation zu, in der Mendelssohn sich befand und die ihn dazu führte, den ästhetischen Anspruch des autonomen,

ein für allemal abgeschlossenen Kunstwerks in ganz unterschiedlichen Graden der Vollendung zu realisieren. Davon legen die unterschiedlichen Fassungen zahlreicher Werke Zeugnis ab, aber auch die Tatsache, dass der Komponist selbst viele abgeschlossene Kompositionen nicht der Veröffentlichung für wert hielt.

Dies stellt die differenzierende Hermeneutik der Quellen, die den editorischen Entscheidungen vorangehen muss, ebenso wie die editorische Pragmatik vor besonders schwierige Aufgaben, eröffnet aber auch die Chance, hinsichtlich von unfertigen oder unvollendeten Kompositionen beispielgebende Verfahrensweisen der Edition zu entwickeln.

Eine besondere Problematik ergibt sich daraus, dass Mendelssohn nur den von ihm veröffentlichten oder zur Veröffent­ lichung vorbereiteten Werken Opuszahlen beigegeben hat, viele seiner Werke also ohne autorisierte Opuszahl überliefert sind.

Dennoch haben sich – zumal durch die oben genannte von Julius Rietz verantwortete Ausgabe – die Opuszahlen von 73 an fest eingebürgert. Dieser Tatsache trug die vorliegende Ausgabe bis zum Jahre 2009 Rechnung, indem diese Opuszahlen weiter benutzt, aber durch eckige Klammern gekennzeichnet wurden.

Seit Erscheinen des Werkverzeichnisses (MWV) wird für die postum veröffentlichten Werke nur noch die dort eingeführte MWV-Bezeichnung verwendet.

Die Ausgabe erscheint in 13 Serien: Serie I Orchesterwerke Serie II Konzerte und Konzertstücke Serie III Kammermusikwerke Serie IV Klavier- und Orgelwerke Serie V Bühnenwerke Serie VI Geistliche Vokalwerke Serie VII Weltliche Vokalwerke Serie VIII Skizzen und Fragmente, die den in den Serien I bis VII veröffentlichten Werken nicht zugeordnet werden können; zusammen­hängende Skizzenkonvolute Serie IX Bearbeitungen und Instrumentationen Serie X Zeichnungen und Aquarelle Serie XI Briefe, Schriften und Tagebücher Serie XII Dokumente zur Lebensgeschichte Serie XIII Werkverzeichnis Die Werke bzw. diejenigen Fassungen der Kompositionen, denen Werkcharakter zukommt, erscheinen in den Hauptbänden, die auch den Kritischen Bericht enthalten. Sekundäre Fassungen, Klavierauszüge und Skizzen zu den Werken der Serien I bis VII werden in Supplementbänden vorgelegt; bei geringem Skizzenbestand kann dieser dem Kritischen Bericht angefügt werden.

Dem jeweiligen Status der Werkgenese entsprechend wird zwischen drei Typen der editorischen Präsentation unterschieden: –– Die Werkedition, deren Grundsätze der ausführlicheren Erläuterung bedürfen, gilt für die Hauptbände der Serien I bis VII und IX, gegebenenfalls auch für Supplementbände.

–– Die Inhaltsedition kommt in den Supplementbänden der Serien I bis VII und IX (z. B. fertige, aber nicht zum Druck bestimmte Fassungen) und in Bänden der Serie VIII (z. B. Fragmente in Reinschrift) zur Anwendung. Die Inhaltsedition hält sich streng

IX an den Text der Quelle. Korrigiert werden lediglich offenkundige Versehen, über die im Kritischen Bericht referiert wird.

– Die Quellenedition gilt in erster Linie für Skizzen und Entwürfe. Der Abdruck ist diplomatisch, nicht jedoch stets zeilen­ getreu; Zeilenwechsel im Original werden durch geeignete Zusatzzeichen angezeigt.

Zur Werkedition Die Edition der Werke in den Hauptbänden stellt das Ergebnis der umfassenden philologischen Sichtung und Interpretation durch den Herausgeber dar. Abweichungen von der Hauptquelle werden entweder durch die Kennzeichnung im Notentext (eckige Klammern oder Strichelung, Fußnoten), durch die Erläuterung im Kritischen Bericht oder – bei besonders gravierenden Eingriffen – durch beides angezeigt.

Darüber hinaus gelten für die Werkedition folgende Prinzipien: –– Die Partituranordnung und die Notation entsprechen den heute gültigen Regeln.

–– Die Schlüsselung der Vokalstimmen wird der heute üblichen Praxis angeglichen.

–– Die Instrumente werden durchweg mit italienischen Namen bezeichnet. Dagegen werden bei den Vokalstimmen entweder deutsche (deutscher oder lateinischer Text) oder englische Bezeichnungen (englischer Text) verwendet; nur für den Fall, dass der Text der Vokalstimmen zweisprachig, d. h. beispielsweise deutsch und englisch wiedergegeben werden muss, bietet die italienische Bezeichnung der Singstimmen einen gangbaren Kompromiss.

–– Orthographie und Silbentrennung verbaler Texte werden den heutigen Regeln angepasst, doch bleiben originale Lautfolge und charakteristische Wortformen gewahrt.

–– Abbreviaturen (auch solche für nicht ausgeschriebene Stimmen in Partitur-Manuskripten, wie z. B. „c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta“) werden im Allgemeinen stillschweigend aufgelöst. Über Abweichungen oder Besonderheiten hinsichtlich dieser Prinzipien wird im Kritischen Bericht Rechenschaft abgelegt.

Zum Kritischen Bericht Der Kritische Bericht, der in den Hauptbänden – soweit es der Umfang erlaubt – immer, in den Supplementbänden jedoch nur gelegentlich dem Notentext folgt, bietet die philologische Argumentation für den vorgelegten Text und weist die Quellen aus, aufgrund derer die editorischen Entscheidungen getroffen wurden. Er enthält die folgenden konstitutiven Abschnitte: –– Verzeichnis der im Kritischen Bericht verwendeten Abkürzungen; –– Quellenbeschreibung; –– Auflistung der textkritisch nicht relevanten Lesarten einzelner Quellen, insbesondere Korrekturverzeichnisse bei autographen Quellen; –– Quellenbewertung; –– Erläuterung der speziellen editorischen Verfahren des jeweiligen Bandes; –– Textkritische Anmerkungen, die über Einzelentscheidungen des ­Herausgebers Rechenschaft ablegen.

Preface The Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is intended to afford public access to all the available compositions, letters, writings and other documents relating to the artistic work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in an appropriately scholarly form. As a historico-critical edition, it aims to be of equal value to researchers and practicing musicians alike.

The musical works take pride of place. Next to completed compositions in all their versions, the Leipzig Edition also presents the sources underlying the creative process (sketches and drafts) as well as unfinished compositions (fragments). In addition, Mendelssohn’s letters are extremely important. It is generally acknowledged that reliably edited correspondence is indispensable for the scholarly study of any composer’s work.

In Mendelssohn’s case, however, the correspondence is of particular significance, not only because it reveals the composer to be an outstanding witness of his time, but also because of the exceptional literary merit of many of his letters. Finally, if one wishes to provide a comprehensive picture of Mendelssohn as an artist, his pictorial works of art, principally drawings and watercolors, cannot be overlooked. A thematic-systematic cata­ logue of his musical works (MWV) was published in a study edition in 2009 and helps provide quick access to the composer’s entire life’s work.

A comprehensive study like this hardly calls for lengthy justification, given both Mendelssohn’s importance as a composer and his neglect by the scholarly and musical world alike, essentially attributable to non-artistic motives. The edition of Mendelssohn’s works published by Julius Rietz between 1874 and 1877 and often erroneously referred to as Alte Gesamtausgabe, was anything but complete, and unlike the Old Bach Edition, for example, was not compiled with any intention of presenting Mendelssohn’s complete works, hence its modest title, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchge­sehene Ausgabe. As a consequence of Rietz’s selection, a consider­able amount of Mendelssohn’s compositions still awaits publi­ cation to this day, while others have been published only in an inadequate form. The few volumes of the new edition which have been published since 1960 by Deutscher Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, have failed to make any major change to this state of affairs.

As regards the chronological arrangement of the compositions to be edited, the present publication conforms to this Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, but generally takes account of the latest principles governing the publication of complete scholarly editions. This refers in particular to the tenet that all the editor’s decisions – whether relating to the score itself or to the Kritischer Bericht (Critical Report) – must be clearly stated and made accessible to the critical understanding of the user. In addition, the edition conforms to the view generally accepted today that every stage of the composing process or of the publication attributable to the composer himself (sketches, different versions, his own transcriptions such as piano scores) forms part of the work itself.

This view is particularly pertinent in the light of the specific musico-historical situation in Mendelssohn’s day, which led him to fulfill the aesthetic demands attendant on a definitive, self-contained work of art in highly differing degrees of perfection. This is evidenced not only by the differing versions of numerous works, but also by the fact that the composer himself considered many completed works not worth publishing. This hampers a differentiating hermeneutic approach to the sources, which must precede any editorial decision, and a pragmatic approach on the part of the editor. At the same time, however, it provides an opportunity for the development of exemplary methods for the editing of unfinished or otherwise incomplete compositions.

A particularly problematic situation results from the fact that Mendelssohn only gave opus numbers to the works which he published or prepared for publication. Many of his works have thus come down to us without authorized opus numbers.

Nevertheless, the opus numbers from 73 onward have long since come into general use, in part through the aforementioned edition supervised by Julius Rietz. The present edition took this into account until the year 2009 by continuing to use these opus numbers, albeit placing them between square brackets. Since the publication of the Thematic Catalogue (MWV), only the MWV designation introduced there will be used to identify the posthumously published works.

The publication will appear in thirteen series, i.e.

Series I Orchestral Works Series II Concertos and Concert Pieces Series III Chamber Music Series IV Piano and Organ Works Series V Stage Works Series VI Sacred Vocal Works Series VII Secular Vocal Works Series VIII Sketches and fragments which cannot be assigned to the works published in series I to VII; associated groups of sketches Series IX Arrangements and Orchestrations Series X Drawings and Watercolors Series XI Letters, Writings and Diaries Series XII Documents relating to Mendelssohn’s life Series XIII Thematic Catalogue of Works The works or those versions of the compositions which can be attributed the status of a work will appear in the main volumes, which will also contain the Kritischer Bericht. Secondary versions, piano scores and sketches relating to the works in series I – VII will be presented in supplementary volumes. In cases where only a small number of sketches are available, these may be included in the Kritischer Bericht.

Three forms of editorial presentation are distinguished, corresponding to the respective genesis of the work, as follows.

–– The Edition of W orks, the principles of which call for a detailed explanation, will apply to the main volumes of series I – VII and IX, and, if indicated, to the supplementary volumes.

XI –– The Edition of Content, which usually will apply to the supplementary volumes to series I – VII and IX (e.g. finished but unprinted versions) and volumes of series VIII (e.g. fair copies of fragments). The edition of content will strictly adhere to the source texts. Only obvious mistakes will be corrected, and these will be referred to in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– The Edition of Sources relates primarily to sketches and drafts.

Reproductions will be faithful, but lines may in some cases be arranged in a different way; line changes in the original will be indicated by suitable supplementary symbols.

–– The spelling and syllabification of verbal texts are adapted in accordance with present-day rules, but the original phonetic sequence and characteristic word forms are retained.

–– Abbreviations (including those for parts which are not completely written out in score manuscripts, such as “c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta”), are in general tacitly written out in full.

An explanation of any divergence from these principles or peculiarities in their use is given in the Kritischer Bericht.

Edition of Works

The Kritischer Bericht which, space permitting, always follows the score in the main volumes and, if appropriate, also in the supplementary volumes, presents the philological legitimation of the text as printed and indicates the sources on which the editorial decisions are based. It contains the following essential paragraphs: –– List of abbreviations used in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– Description of sources.

–– A list of the text-critically non-relevant readings of individual sources, particularly indexes of corrections in the case of manuscript sources.

–– Evaluation of sources.

–– An explanation of the particular editing methods for the respec­tive volume.

–– Text-critical remarks which account for individual decisions by the editor.

The editing of works in the main volumes represents the results of an exhaustive philological study and its interpretation by the editor. Divergences from the principal source will be indicated either by markings in the score (square brackets or broken lines, footnotes), with an explanation in the Kritischer Bericht, or – in particularly serious cases – by both.

In addition, the following principles apply to the edition of works: –– The arrangement of the score and the notation comply with present-day standards.

–– The keys for the vocal parts are adjusted in accordance with conventional present-day practice.

–– The instruments are designated by their Italian names through­out. By contrast, German terms are used for the vocal parts (where the words are in German or Latin), or English terms (where the words are in English); only in such cases where the text of the vocal parts is rendered bilingually (for example in German and in English), voice designations in Italian are used as a viable compromise.

Einleitung Sechs der sieben Kompositionen in diesem Band sind mit Klavier und einem weiteren Instrument oder zwei weiteren In­strumenten besetzt.1 In einem Fall, The Shepherd’s Song MWV R 24, handelt es sich um das einzige Stück Mendelssohns für Soloflöte.

Die Kompositionen der 1820er-Jahre In Mendelssohns ersten Schaffensjahren als Komponist – von 1819 bis 1825 – entstanden 13 Kammermusikwerke mit Klavier; zu seinen ersten vollständigen Kompositionen aus dem Jahr 1820 zählen bereits zwei derartige Kammermusiken. Eines davon ist das Trio MWV Q 3, unzweifelhaft ein Ergebnis des Kompositionsunterrichts bei Carl Friedrich Zelter. Dieses erste vollständige Kammermusikwerk, zugleich seine erste mehrsätzige Komposition überhaupt, verfasste Mendelssohn in der Ton­art c-Moll. Am 5. April 1820 war der Kopfsatz, am 9. Mai dann das Trio insgesamt abgeschlossen, wie die entsprechenden Datierungen auf der einzigen erhaltenen Quelle, dem Kompositionsautograph, mitteilen.

Es handelt sich hier nicht um ein klassisches Klaviertrio, wie es spätestens seit Joseph Haydn etabliert war, denn statt des üblichen Violoncello tritt als drittes Instrument neben Violine und Klavier hier die Bratsche hinzu. Diese Wahl könnte freilich schlicht damit zu tun haben, dass Mendelssohn außer dem Klavier zwar ebenso virtuos das Geigen- und Bratschenspiel beherrschte, doch über seine Fähigkeiten des Cellospielens nichts bekannt ist.2 Jedoch wird auch formell der Versuch deutlich, sich von der traditionellen Trioform abzusetzen: Dem Kopfsatz folgt kein langsamer Satz, sondern ein (äußerst knapp gehaltenes) Scherzo, das überdies im 4/4-Takt statt in einem Dreiertakt notiert ist; erst an dritter Stelle steht das Adagio. Dabei ist der Klavierpart keineswegs dominant, nahezu gleichberechtigt präsentieren die drei Instrumente thematisches Material und treiben das musikalische Geschehen voran; oft übernimmt das Tasteninstrument sogar eine zurückhaltend begleitende Funktion für die beiden Oberstimmen. Mendelssohn erfüllte mit dem Trio demnach nicht nur bestimmte kompositionstechnische

Ansprüche, sondern setzte sich darüber hinaus mit klassischen Modellwerken auseinander.

Die Komposition des Adagio-Satzes brach Mendelssohn zunächst nach acht Takten ab. Anscheinend erst nach mehreren Tagen verwarf er durch Streichung den Anfang endgültig, begann auf einer neuen Seite noch einmal von vorn und führte die Komposition zu Ende. Der zweite Versuch hat dabei erstaunlicherweise einen musikalisch gänzlich anderen Charakter als der erste Entwurf. Dies nährte zeitweise sogar die Zweifel darüber, ob das begonnene Adagio überhaupt als Teil des Trios gedacht war. Bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hinein blieb das Trio ungedruckt.

Wie für das frühe Trio von 1820, so wählte Mendelssohn auch für seine etwa dreieinhalb Jahre später entstandene Sonate für Viola und Klavier MWV Q 14 die dunkle Tonart c-Moll.3 Mag man in jenem ersten Kammermusikwerk noch weitgehend einen Versuchscharakter erkennen, so zeugt die Bratschensonate nach einhelliger Beurteilung der Forschung allenthalben von bemerkenswerter kompositorischer Reife.4 Dennoch zählt sie zu den am wenigsten bekannten Kompositionen Mendelssohns.

Erst im Jahr 1966 erfolgte der Erstdruck.5 Ein Entstehungsanlass ist nicht bekannt. Gemäß den verschiedenen Datierungen auf der einzigen überlieferten Quelle, der autographen Partitur, begann Mendelssohn die Niederschrift am 23. November 1823, beendete einen Tag darauf den Kopfsatz und schloss das Stück am 14. Februar 1824 ab. Es reiht sich in sieben, zwischen Ende 1822 und Januar 1825 rasch hintereinander entstandene Kammermusiken ein, zu denen neben der Klarinettensonate MWV Q 15 drei Klavierquartette (op. 1 MWV Q 11, op. 2 MWV Q 13 und op. 3 MWV Q 17), eine Violinsonate (op. 4 MWV Q 12) und ein Klaviersextett (MWV Q 16) gehören. Die Zueignungen der beiden anderen Werke für Klavier und Soloinstrument an verschiedene Instrumentalisten – die Violinsonate an Eduard Ritz und die Klarinettensonate an Carl Kaskel (siehe unten) – lassen vermuten, dass Mendelssohn auch bei seiner hoch virtuosen Bratschensonate einen bestimmten Interpreten im Blick hatte. Bei diesem könnte es sich um den in der Mendelssohnforschung bislang kaum be-

Auch sind von den 17 im Streichquartettsatz verfassten Fugen des Jahres 1821 (MWV R 1–17) acht in einer Moll-Tonart komponiert.

XIII achteten Vater von Eduard Ritz, Johann Friedrich Ritz (1767– 1828) handeln.6 Dieser wirkte seit Beginn des Jahrhunderts als Bratschist in Berlin, in der Opern-Kapelle und am Königlichen Nationaltheater.7 Von ihm stammt die Abschrift der Bach’schen Messe in h (BWV 232) aus Mendelssohns Besitz sowie die der Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244), die dem jungen Komponisten zu Weihnachten 1823 oder im Februar 1824 von Bella Salomon geschenkt worden war. Mit Sicherheit kannten sich Mendelssohn und der erfahrene – und gemeinhin so genannte – „Königliche Kammermusikus Ritz senior“ persönlich gut. Demnach liegt die Annahme mehr als nahe, dass in zeitlicher Nähe zur im Mai 1823 komponierten Violinsonate MWV Q 12 für den Sohn, Eduard Ritz, die im Februar 1824 fertiggestellte virtuose Bratschensonate MWV Q 14 dem Vater, Johann Friedrich Ritz, zugedacht war.

Aber auch der Klavierpart setzt herausragende technische Fähigkeiten voraus. Durch den weitgehend vom Klavier bestimmten, abschließenden langsamen und sehr umfangreichen Variationensatz wird der Schwerpunkt vom Kopfsatz zum Finale verlagert.

Das Thema des Menuetts verwendete Mendelssohn in dem kurz darauf komponierten und ebenfalls in c-Moll stehenden Menuett-Satz der Sinfonie Nr. 1 op. 11 MWV N 13 quintversetzt wieder.8 Seine Klarinettensonate (MWV Q 15) komponierte Mendelssohn im Frühjahr 1824 für den Dresdner Bankier Carl Kaskel (1797–1874). Kaskel war ab 1845 Inhaber eines angesehenen Privatbankhauses im Familienbesitz, wirkte zudem wie sein Vater als Königlich Sächsischer Hofbankier und bereits seit 1838 als Vizepräsident der Sächsischen Staatsbank. 1872 gründete er mit einem Teilhaber durch Umwandlung seines Bankhauses in eine Aktiengesellschaft die Dresdner Bank. Unter dem Pseu­ donym Karl Lasekk war Kaskel auch kompositorisch tätig. Er war eng befreundet mit Giacomo Meyerbeer und stand ab den 1830er-Jahren in regem Austausch mit Robert Schumann.

Wie der Kontakt zu Mendelssohn zustande kam und ob sich die beiden vor oder auch nach der Entstehung der Sonate 1824 persönlich begegneten, ist unklar.9 Dass Kaskel der förmliche Auftraggeber der Komposition war, ist unstrittig, denn im Begleitbrief zur Übersendung der autographen Partitur10 an Kaskel heißt es in Mendelssohn’scher Bescheidenheit: „Verzeihen Sie, […] daß ich erst so sehr spät mein Wort halte. Ich hatte diesen ganzen Winter sehr viel zu thun, und dann ist eine Sonate für Klavier und Clarinette eben nicht die leichteste Aufgabe. Sie ist von mir schlecht gelöst worden, das weiß ich leider zu gut, indessen wäre sie mir gewiß noch weniger gelungen, wenn ich sie ganz ohne ein Bischen Ueberlegung niedergeschrieben hätte.

Also Verzeihung für das lange Ausbleiben und für die große Mittelmäßigkeit der Sonate. […] Nochmals: verzeihen Sie mir das lange Ausbleiben der Sonate, und die schlechte Erfüllung ihres Wunsches. Pardon!“11 Demnach scheint der Kompositionsauftrag im Sommer oder Herbst 1823 ergangen zu sein. Denkbar ist eine Begegnung in Dresden auf der Durchreise Mendelssohns mit dem Vater und dem Bruder Paul im August 1823 nach oder aus Schlesien und dem Riesengebirge. 1819 hatte Felix mit seiner Mutter Lea Mendelssohn erstmals Dresden besucht,12 die Bekanntschaft mit Kaskel könnte auch bereits aus dieser Zeit herrühren. Etliche Jahre später erinnerte sich Mendelssohn an die Sonate und erbat über Henriette Naumann (1800–1878), eine Schwester von Kaskel, der er wohl auf dem Niederrheinischen Musikfest in Köln im Mai und Juni 1838 begegnet war, eine Abschrift. Daraufhin schrieb ihm Carl Kaskel: „Ich habe seit Jahren nur durch die Zeitungen, die steten Boten Ihres Ruhmes, von Ihnen gehört; und mich an Ihre Meisterwerke [sic] erlabt; ich hoffe jedoch daß Sie sich meiner noch entsinnen, und wäre es auch nur, da Sie, wie meine Schwester aus Bonn mir sagt, eine Abschrift einer Sonate für Clavier und Clarinette zu haben wünschen, die Sie als Knabe für mich componirten, und welche schon unverkennbar und herrlich ausspricht, was der Jüngling, was der Mann leisten werde und leistete! Weder Ihren Namen noch die Jahreszahl haben sie damals darauf be-

[…] Tharand, Bastei, Präbisch-Thor, Bieler Grund, Schandau etc. soll leben, und nebenbei auch Ihre Bildergallerie!“

XIV merkt. Sagen Sie mir nun gefälligst, ob Sie die Clarinettenstime besonders ausgeschrieben wünschen?“13 Mendelssohn erwartete anscheinend keine separate Solostimme; die Partitur ließ Kaskel kopieren, annotierte das Titelblatt und ließ sie dem Komponisten zukommen, der sie anstelle des Auto­graphs zusammen mit seinen Notenhandschriften aufbewahrte.14 Nichts deutet darauf hin, dass Mendelssohn die Kopie für eine weitere Verwendung vorsah, weder für eine Aufführung durch die mit ihm befreundeten Musiker Heinrich Baermann (1784–1847) und Carl Baermann (1811–1885), noch als Vorbereitung eines Druckes, die Abschrift sollte offenbar lediglich der Vollständigkeit halber im privaten Bestand archiviert werden. Es gibt auch keinen sonstigen Hinweis auf ein öffentliches Erklingen des Stückes zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten.

Unbekannt sind die beabsichtigte und die tatsächliche Verwendung durch den Auftraggeber Kaskel, der ganz offensichtlich selbst Klarinette spielte; naheliegend sind Aufführungen im privaten Rahmen. Erst in den letzten Jahren rückte die Sonate nach und nach in das Blickfeld der musikalischen Praxis und auch der Forschung.15 Das 30 Takte umfassende The Shepherd’s Song MWV R 24 ist das einzige Solostück für Flöte von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Es handelt sich um eine Widmungskomposition, die am 28. Juli 1829 in London in ein Album niedergeschrieben wurde. Der Verbleib dieses Albumblattes,16 das der Musikantiquar William Reeves 1891 bei Puttick & Simpson ersteigerte, ist heute unbekannt. Vom postumen Erstdruck aus dem Jahr 1889 in der Bearbeitung mit Klavierbegleitung,17 für dessen Flötenstimme als Vorlage das Autograph verwendet wurde, existieren nur wenige Exemplare, was dazu beigetragen haben

mag, dass die Zuschreibung der Komposition an Mendelssohn und die Zuordnung zum Quellennachweis des Autographs erst 1992 durch Ralf Wehner erfolgte. Der Adressat der Widmung ist unbekannt, mit Sicherheit spielte er oder sie Flöte; darüber, ob „Shepherd“ lediglich den mit einer Soloflöte assoziierten Topos des Pastoralen verbal bereits im Titel verdeutlichen soll oder zudem auch eine Anspielung auf einen Nachnamen sein könnte, kann nur gemutmaßt werden.

Im November 1829 komponierte Mendelssohn innerhalb kürzester Zeit – wohl am Abend des 18. November – ein Duo für Harfe und Klavier mit dem Titel The Evening Bell (MWV Q 20).

Entstehungszeit und -ort sind in einer Abschrift18 des Stückes festgehalten; die Widmung an Thomas Attwood (1765–1838) und seine Tochter Caroline Eliza Attwood (1796–1889) ist dem postumen Erstdruck19 zu entnehmen. Von den genauen Umständen der Entstehung berichtet erstmals der Druck der Bearbeitung für Klavier solo; dort ist auf der ersten Notenseite zu lesen: „THE STORY OF THIS COMPOSITION IS THAT MENDELSSOHN, STAYING WITH MR ATTWOOD, AT NORWOOD, IN 1829, WAS OBLIGED FOR SOME REASON OR OTHER TO TAKE HIS DEPARTURE, DEFERRING HIS JOURNEY TO LONDON, HOWEVER, AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, DESPITE THE FREQUENT WARNING OF THE GATE BELL, WHICH TOLD HIM THAT HIS CARRIAGE WAS IN ATTENDANCE. UPON HIS ARRIVAL IN TOWN HE PENNED THIS COMPOSITION, THE FOUNDATION OF WHICH IS THE SOLITARY NOTE OF THE GATE BELL, THE SAME NIGHT, AND FORWARDED BOTH THE PIANOFORTE & HARP PARTS (THE LATTER INTENDED FOR MISS ATTWOOD) TO

Seine eigenen Kompositionen umfassen Lieder, sowohl weltliche Chormusik (Kantaten, Schauspielmusiken) als auch geistliche Chormusik (Anthems, Oden), Solo- und Kammermusik für Violine und Bratsche, Orgelmusik und Orchestermusik. Eine von ihm verfasste Violinschule galt lange Zeit als Standardwerk im englischsprachigen Raum.

XV HIS HOST THE FOLLOWING DAY.“20 Nachdem Mendelssohn seine schwere Beinverletzung, die er sich im September 1829 zugezogen hatte, zunächst in London kurierte, zog er vom 13. bis 18. November in das Haus von Thomas Attwood nach Norwood, Surrey. Von diesen Umständen und der engen Freundschaft der beiden Musiker berichtet Frederick George Edwards (1853–1909) in einer Würdigung Attwoods21: „When Mendelssohn first visited these shores in 1829, he, curiously enough, journeyed hither in a steamer named ‚The Attwood‘! A warm friendship soon sprang up between ‚dear Mr. Attwood,‘ then aged sixty-four, and the youthful Mendelssohn of some twenty summers. It found an outlet for its practical expression upon the occasion of a somewhat serious accident which befell the latter in September, 1829, when he was thrown out of a carriage in London. During the weary period of suffering in his lonely London lodgings, Mendelssohn was very kindly trea­ ted by his English friends, but by none more so than the Attwoods.“22 Vor seinem Aufenthalt im Haus von Attwood schrieb Mendelssohn nach Hause: „Heut gehe ich nun nach Norwood, wo es die beste, frische Luft um London, schöne Gegend und gar liebe Leute giebt. Da werde ich wohl vor Montag nicht wegkommen, und mich im Gehen auf der Straße üben, was man hier nicht ohne Gefahr kann; mein hora, den Petrus und das neue Quartett […] nehme ich mit hinaus, der alte Attwood hat mir auch noch mancherley zu zeigen, der Tochter, die Harfe spielt, muß ich begleiten […].“23 Offenbar am 18. November, dem letzten Tag seines Aufenthaltes, fand eine Art Abschiedsfeier statt, wie wiederum Edwards mitteilt, der nun weiter zur Entstehung von MWV Q 20 berichtet: „The gate-bell […] suggested one of Mendelssohn’s ‚happy thoughts.‘ During [the] visit to the Attwoods Mendelssohn had to return to London one evening when a large party of friends had been invited to meet him. He was in excellent spirits, and frequently extemporised on the pianoforte in his best style. At the appointed hour for his departure, the gate-bell was rung by the coachman announcing the arrival of the carriage to convey him to London. The summons was unheeded, so the bell was rung again and again, till at last Mendelssohn reluctantly tore himself away from his friends. Arriving at his lodgings in London, and before going to bed, he sat down and composed a little piece for harp and pianoforte, which he called ‚The Evening Bell.‘ He sent the MS. the next day to Mr. Attwood and his daughter – who played the harp – with a dedication also in his own handwriting. The

note of the gate-bell (A) frequently occurs in this little-known composition […].“24 Der Verbleib dieser Handschrift ist unbekannt; ebenso, wie und ob sie wirklich schon am nächsten Tag zu den Widmungsträgern gelangte. Bereits am 16. Juli 1829 hatte Mendelssohn aus London ein Lied (MWV K 45) an Vater und Tochter Attwood nach Norwood geschickt: „By accepting the enclosed little song, & by playing it sometimes with your daughter you will extremely oblige me & do me a great honour.

I know very well that it is of no musical value; but as it is written as a recollection of the happy hours I passed with you & your family, I cannot help offering it to you, in expression of any ­hear­ty thanks, for the pleasure, for which I am so much indebted to you.“25 Im November überließ Mendelssohn dem englischen Freund Handschriften mehrerer seiner Werke, wie u. a. sein „Tu es Petrus“ MWV A 4, den Choral „Christe, du Lamm Gottes“ MWV A 5 und die annotierten Klingemann-Abschriften der Klavierfantasien op. 16 MWV U 70–72, bei seinem Besuch 1832 wohl auch den Choral „O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden“ MWV A 8, später auch die Melusinen-Ouvertüre MWV P 12 und Responses to the Commandments „Lord, have mercy upon us“ MWV B 27 sowie die zwei Orgelfugen MWV V 1.

Laut eines Versteigerungskataloges von 1918 existierte ein zweites, auf den 18. Juli 1830 datiertes Autograph des „Evening Bell“.26 Im Kommentar des Eintrages heißt es dazu: „Wundervolles Stück, der Gattin des Majors u. Königl. Kammerherrn von Parseval, einer geb. Gräfin O’Hegerty in München gewidmet. Als Mendelssohn nach München kam lernte er obige Dame, die die Harfe vollendet spielte kennen u. begleitete sie öfters auf dem Klavier.“27 Franziska (Fanny) Gräfin O’Hegerty (1797–1881) wurde in Dublin geboren und heiratete 1821 in Paris den aus Metz stammenden Ferdinand von Parseval (1791–1854). Dieser gehörte einem französischen Adelsgeschlecht an, war zunächst Offizier von Friedrich Wilhelm von Preußen, ab 1816 Rittmeister, später Königlich Bayerischer Generalmajor und Kammerherr in München. Introduction Six of the seven compositions in this volume are scored for piano and either one or two other instruments.1 The remaining work, The Shepherd’s Song MWV R 24, is the only piece by Mendelssohn for solo flute.

The compositions of the 1820s In Mendelssohn’s first years as a composer – from 1819 to 1825 – he produced 13 works of chamber music with piano; two such chamber works can already be found among his first completed compositions from 1820. One of these is the Trio MWV Q 3, which was undoubtedly a result of his composition lessons with Carl Friedrich Zelter. This piece in C minor constitutes Mendelssohn’s first complete chamber music work and, at the same time, his first ever multi-movement composition. Dates on the only surviving source, the autograph of the composition, indicate that the first movement was completed on April 5, 1820, and that the entire trio was finished by May 9.

The work is not a classical piano trio, as it diverges in a number of ways from the genre established in, at the latest, the work of Joseph Haydn. The most obvious difference is the use of the viola in place of the violoncello as the third instrument next to the violin and piano. This choice may simply have to do with the fact that Mendelssohn was a virtuoso not only on the piano but also on the violin and viola, while nothing is known about his cello playing abilities.2 The composer’s desire to achieve distance from more traditional trios is also evident from the work’s form: The opening movement is not followed by a slow movement but by a (very short) scherzo, which, moreover, is notated in 4/4 instead of triple time; the Adagio, in turn, does not come until the third movement. The piano is by no means the dominant part; rather, the three instruments are treated as equals with respect to the presentation of thematic material and the forward drive of the musical events. Indeed, the piano often holds back, functioning as an accompaniment to the two upper voices. Thus, the trio not only demonstrates Mendelssohn ability to fulfil specific demands with respect to compositional

technique but also provides an early example of his engagement with classical models.

Initially, Mendelssohn stopped composing the Adagio movement after only eight measures. Apparently, it was not until several days later that he decided to abandon this beginning entirely, crossing it out and, after beginning anew on a separate page, taking the composition to completion. Surprisingly, the second attempt has a completely different musical character than the first draft. At times, this has even fueled doubts as to whether the first attempt at the Adagio was intended as part of the trio at all. The trio remained unpublished until the second half of the 20th century.

Just as he had for this early trio of 1820, Mendelssohn chose the dark key of C minor for his Sonata for Viola and Piano MWV Q 14, composed about three and a half years later.3 If the trio, as his first work of chamber music, has a somewhat ex­ perimental character, there is consensus among researchers worldwide that the Viola Sonata demonstrates remarkable compositional maturity.4 Nevertheless, it remains one of Mendelssohn’s least-known compositions and was not published until 1966.5 A specific occasion behind the composition is not known. According to the various dates provided on the only surviving source, the autograph score, Mendelssohn began composing on November 23, 1823, finished the first movement one day later, and completed the piece on February 14, 1824. It is one of a series of seven chamber works written in rapid succession between late 1822 and January 1825, including the Clarinet Sonata MWV Q 15, three piano quartets (op. 1 MWV Q 11, op. 2 MWV Q 13, and op. 3 MWV Q 17), a violin sonata (op. 4 MWV Q 12), and a piano sextet (MWV Q 16). The fact that the two works here for piano and solo instrument were dedicated to different instrumentalists – the violin sonata to Eduard Ritz and the clarinet sonata to Carl Kaskel (see below) – suggests that Mendelssohn also had a particular interpreter in mind for his highly virtuosic viola sonata. One possibility is the father of Eduard Ritz, Johann Friedrich Ritz (1767–1828), who has thus far received little attention in Mendelssohn research.6

XXIII Ritz worked as a violist in Berlin since the early 1800s, in the court orchestra and at the Nationaltheater.7 Mendelssohn’s score of Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232) was prepared by him, as was the copy of the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) that was given to the young composer by Bella Salomon as a present on Christmas 1823 or in February 1824. Mendelssohn was certainly well acquainted with the experienced violist, commonly referred to as “Königlicher Kammermusikus Ritz senior.” Thus, considering that the Violin Sonata MWV Q 12 was composed in May 1823 for the son Eduard Ritz, it is highly likely that the virtuoso Viola Sonata MWV Q 15 – completed less than one year later in February 1824 – was intended for the father, Johann Friedrich Ritz.

But the piano part also requires outstanding technical skills. The concluding slow movement – which is made up of an extensive set of variations shaped largely by the piano part – shifts the emphasis from the opening movement to the finale.

Mendelssohn used the theme of the Minuet again in the minuet movement of Symphony No. 1 op. 11 MWV N 13, which was composed shortly thereafter and is also in C minor.8 Mendelssohn composed his Clarinet Sonata (MWV Q 15) in the spring of 1824 for the Dresden banker Carl Kaskel (­1797­–­1874). In 1845, Kaskel became the owner of a prestigious family-owned private bank; like his father, he served as Royal Saxon Court Banker, and, as early as 1838, as Vice-President of the Sächsische Staatsbank. In 1872, he and a partner cofounded the Dresdner Bank by converting his banking house into a joint stock company. Kaskel was also active as a composer, for which he used the pseudonym Karl Lasekk. He was a close friend of Giacomo Meyerbeer and, from the 1830s onwards, cultivated a lively correspondence with Robert Schumann.

It is unclear how the contact with Mendelssohn came about and whether the two met in person before or even after the composition of the sonata in 1824.9 That Kaskel was the one

who formally commissioned the composition is indisputable.

This is evident from the letter to Kaskel accompanying the autograph score,10 formulated with typical Mendelssohnian modesty: “Forgive me [...] for being so very late in keeping my word.

I had a lot to do throughout this winter, and a sonata for piano and clarinet is also not the easiest of tasks. I know too well that I have done a poor job in fulfilling it, however, I would certainly have been even less successful if I had just written down the piece without thinking a bit about it. So I apologize for putting it off so long and for the fact that the sonata is remarkably mediocre. [...] Once again: forgive me for making you wait so long for the sonata, and for the poor job in fulfilling your wishes.

Pardon!”11 From this, it is apparent that the commission was issued in the summer or fall of 1823. It is conceivable that they met in Dresden while Mendelssohn was passing through with his father and brother Paul in August 1823, to or from Silesia and the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). In 1819, Felix had visited Dresden for the first time with his mother Lea Mendelssohn,12 so the acquaintance with Kaskel could also date back to this time. Several years later, Mendelssohn remembered the sonata and requested a copy through Kaskel’s sister Henriette Naumann (1800–1878), whom he had probably met at the Lower Rhine Music Festival in Cologne in May and June 1838.

Carl Kaskel then wrote to him: “For years I have heard about you only through the newspapers, those reliable messengers of your renown, and have enjoyed your masterpieces; I hope, however, that you still remember me, even if it is only because, as my sister from Bonn tells me, you would like to have a copy of a sonata for piano and clarinet, which you composed for me as a boy, and which is an early indication, unmistakable and wonderful, of what the adolescent, what the grown would achieve and has achieved! You wrote neither your name nor the year on it at that time. Now please tell me whether you would like the clarinet part to be written out separately?”13 Mendelssohn apparently did not expect a separate solo part; Kaskel had the

XXIV score copied, annotated the title page, and sent it to the composer, who kept it in place of the autograph along with his music manuscripts.14 There is nothing to indicate that Mendelssohn intended the copy for further use, neither for a performance by his musician friends Heinrich Baermann (1784 –1847) and Carl Baermann (1811–1885), nor as preparation for a printed publication; the copy was apparently only to be archived in the private collection for the sake of completeness. There is also no other indication of a public performance of the piece during the composer’s lifetime.

Nothing is known of Kaskel’s intentions for the piece or his actually use thereof. He obviously played the clarinet himself, and it seems likely that the piece was performed privately. Only in recent years has the sonata gradually come into the focus of both musical practice and research.15 The 30-bar piece entitled The Shepherd’s Song MWV R 24 is the only solo work for flute by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a dedicatory composition composed in London on July 28, 1829, entered into an album. The whereabouts of this album leaf,16 which the music antiquarian William Reeves bought at an auction of Puttick & Simpson in 1891, is unknown today.

Only a few copies exist of the first printed edition of the song, an arrangement with piano accompaniment published posthumously in 188917 that used the autograph as a template for its flute part. This may have contributed to the fact that it was not until 1992 that, thanks to Ralf Wehner, the composition was attributed to Mendelssohn and matched with the record of the autograph source. Nothing is known about the recipient of the dedication other than the fact that he or she played flute.

Whether the reference to a “Shepherd” in the title was meant simply to emphasize the already strong association between the

pastoral topos and solo flute, or whether it might be an allusion to a surname must be left to speculation.

An extremely short time frame – probably just the evening of November 18, 1829 – was needed by Mendelssohn to compose the duo for harp and piano entitled The Evening Bell (MWV Q 20).

The time and place of composition were recorded in a manuscript copy18 of the piece; the dedication to Thomas Attwood (1765–1838) and his daughter Caroline Eliza Attwood (1796– 1889) was provided in the posthumous first printing.19 The exact circumstances surrounding the composition’s origins were first reported in a printed arrangement for solo piano, which includes the following commentary on the first page of the score: “THE STORY OF THIS COMPOSITION IS THAT MENDELSSOHN, STAYING WITH MR ATTWOOD, AT NORWOOD, IN 1829, WAS OBLIGED FOR SOME REASON OR OTHER TO TAKE HIS DEPARTURE, DEFERRING HIS JOURNEY TO LONDON, HOWEVER, AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, DESPITE THE FREQUENT WARNING OF THE GATE BELL, WHICH TOLD HIM THAT HIS CARRIAGE WAS IN ATTENDANCE. UPON HIS ARRIVAL IN TOWN HE PENNED THIS COMPOSITION, THE FOUNDATION OF WHICH IS THE SOLITARY NOTE OF THE GATE BELL, THE SAME NIGHT, AND FORWARDED BOTH THE PIANOFORTE & HARP PARTS (THE LATTER INTENDED FOR MISS ATTWOOD) TO HIS HOST THE FOLLOWING DAY.”20 After sustaining a severe leg injury in September 1829, Mendelssohn first spent time recuperating in London, after which he moved to the house of Thomas Attwood in Norwood, Surrey, from November 13 to 18. Frederick George Edwards (1853–1909) reported on these circumstances and depicted the close friendship of the

XXV two musicians in a tribute to Attwood21: “When Mendelssohn first visited these shores in 1829, he, curiously enough, journeyed hither in a steamer named ‘The Attwood’! A warm friendship soon sprang up between ‘dear Mr. Attwood,’ then aged sixty-four, and the youthful Mendelssohn of some twenty summers. It found an outlet for its practical expression upon the occasion of a somewhat serious accident which befell the latter in September, 1829, when he was thrown out of a carriage in London. During the weary period of suffering in his lonely London lodgings, Mendelssohn was very kindly treated by his English friends, but by none more so than the Attwoods.”22 Before leaving for the Attwood’s, Mendelssohn wrote home: “Today I am going to Norwood, which has the best fresh air in the London area as well as beautiful surroundings and very nice people. I will probably not be able to leave there before Monday, and I will practice walking on the street, which I cannot do here without putting myself in danger; I will take my hora, the Petrus and the new quartet [...] with me, old Attwood also has many things to show me, I must accompany the daughter who plays the harp […].”23 On November 18, the last day of Mendelssohn’s visit, a sort of farewell party took place, again according to Edwards, who also reported on the origins of MWV Q 20: “The gate-bell […] suggested one of Mendelssohn’s ‘happy thoughts.’ During [the] visit to the Attwoods Mendelssohn had to return to London one evening when a large party of friends had been invited to meet him. He was in excellent spirits, and frequently extemporised on the pianoforte in his best style. At the appointed hour for his departure, the gate-bell was rung by the coachman announcing the arrival of the carriage to convey him to London. The summons was unheeded, so the bell was rung again and again, till at last Mendelssohn reluctantly tore himself away from his friends. Arriving at his lodgings in London, and before going to bed, he sat down and composed a little piece for harp and pianoforte, which he called ‘The Evening Bell.’ He sent the MS. the next day to Mr. Attwood and his daughter – who played the harp – with a dedication also in his own handwriting. The note of the gate-bell (A) frequently occurs in this little-known composition […].”24 The whereabouts of this manuscript is not known, nor is how – or even whether – it managed to reach the dedicatees the very next day. Mendelssohn had already sent a song (MWV K 45) from London to father and daughter Attwood in Norwood on July 16, 1829: “By accepting the enclosed little song, & by playing it sometimes with your daughter you will extremely oblige me & do me a great honour. I know very

well that it is of no musical value; but as it is written as a recollection of the happy hours I passed with you & your family, I cannot help offering it to you, in expression of any hearty thanks, for the pleasure, for which I am so much indebted to you.”25 In November, Mendelssohn left manuscripts of several of his works with his English friend, such as his “Tu es Petrus” MWV A 4, the Chorale “Christe, du Lamm Gottes” MWV A 5, and the annotated Klingemann copies of the Piano Fantasies op. 16 MWV U 70–72. During his visit in 1832, he probably also left the Chorale “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden” MWV A 8, and later also the Melusine Overture MWV P 12, Responses to the Commandments “Lord, have mercy upon us” MWV B 27, and the two Organ Fugues MWV V 1.

According to an auction catalog of 1918, a second autograph of the “Evening Bell” existed, which was dated July 18, 1830.26 The commentary of the entry states: “Wonderful piece, dedicated to the wife of the Major and Royal Chamberlain von Parseval, née Countess O’Hegerty in Munich. When Mendelssohn came to Munich, he got to know the above lady, who played the harp to perfection, and often accompanied her on the piano.”27 Franziska (Fanny) Countess O’Hegerty (1797–1881) was born in Dublin and married Ferdinand von Parseval (1791–1854), a native of Metz, in Paris in 1821. The latter belonged to a French noble family, was first an officer of Frederick William of Prussia, from 1816 a cavalry captain, and later became a Royal Bavarian major general and chamberlain in Munich. Franziska O’Hegerty was the daughter of Francis Peter Charles Daniel Count O’Hegerty (1767–1849), an officer in the Irish Brigade of the French Army, Commander of the Order of St. Louis, and Chevalier of the Royal Legion of Honor; he was a descendant of a part of the Irish royal family whose members, in French exile since 1691, were in the service of the French Bourbons.

Fanny learned how to play harp from her mother, who, known as “Madame O’Hegerty,” had achieved some fame as a pedal harpist and harp teacher. After the Revolutionary Wars drove the O’Hegerty family back to Dublin, the “French Lady” organized musical soirées at her residence in St. Stephen’s Green in the 1790s. At the same time, her private lessons made her a formative figure in the early Irish pedal harp tradition.28 Mendelssohn stayed in Munich from the beginning of June to the beginning of August 1830. There is no reason to doubt the description of his meeting with the harpist found in the Henrici-Katalog, as Mendelssohn played music in Munich almost every evening. Moreover, he noted in his travel notebook
