Vorwort Die Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy verfolgt die Absicht, sämtliche erreichbaren Kompositionen, Briefe und Schriften sowie alle anderen Dokumente seines künstlerischen Schaffens in wissenschaftlich angemessener Form der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Als historischkritische Ausgabe will sie der Forschung und der musikalischen Praxis gleichermaßen dienen.

Im Vordergrund stehen die musikalischen Werke; von ihnen sind nicht nur die vollendeten Kompositionen in all ihren Fassungen, sondern auch die Quellen des Entstehungsprozesses (Skizzen und Entwürfe) ebenso wie die unfertigen Kompositionen (Fragmente) vorzulegen. Daneben ist die von Mendelssohn geführte Korrespondenz außerordentlich wichtig. Die Erkenntnis, dass die zuverlässige Edition der Briefe für die wissenschaftliche Erschließung eines kompositorischen Œuvres unabdingbar ist, gilt allgemein; bei Mendelssohn indes gewinnt die Korrespondenz, die den Komponisten als Zeitzeugen er­sten Ranges ausweist, durch den hohen literarischen Wert vieler seiner Briefe besondere Bedeutung.

Schließlich dürfen – will man ein umfassendes Bild des Künstlers Mendelssohn bieten – die bildnerischen Werke, vornehmlich Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, nicht fehlen. Ein thematischsystematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke (MWV), das 2009 in einer Studien-Ausgabe erschienen ist, soll dazu beitragen, den raschen Zugriff auf das Gesamtwerk zu fördern.

Angesichts der Bedeutung Mendelssohns einerseits und dessen wesentlich von außerkünstlerischen Motiven verursachter Vernachlässigung durch die wissenschaftliche wie praktische Rezeption andererseits bedarf selbst ein so umfassend angelegtes Konzept kaum der ausführlichen Rechtfertigung. Die von Julius Rietz zwischen 1874 und 1877 vorgelegte Werkausgabe, oft irrig Alte Gesamtausgabe genannt, war alles andere als vollständig und – anders etwa als die alte Bach-Ausgabe – keineswegs von der Intention getragen, das Gesamtwerk von Mendelssohn vorzulegen; sie hieß dementsprechend bescheiden Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchgesehene Ausgabe. Die von Rietz getroffene Auswahl hatte zur Konsequenz, dass ein beträchtli­cher Teil der Kompositionen Mendelssohns bis heute noch immer der Veröffentlichung harrt und ein weiterer bislang nur unzulänglich publiziert ist. Daran haben die wenigen Bände der seit 1960 im Deutschen Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, erschienenen Neuausgabe kaum etwas ändern können.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe schließt hinsichtlich der zeitlichen Disposition der zu edierenden Kompositionen an diese Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys an, trägt aber grundsätzlich dem neuesten Standard der Editionsprinzipien wissenschaftlicher Gesamtausgaben Rechnung. Dies bezieht sich namentlich auf die Maxime, dass alle Herausgeberentscheidungen – sei es im Notentext selbst, sei es im Kritischen Bericht – kenntlich und dem kritischen Nachvollzug des Benutzers zugänglich gemacht werden. Darüber hinaus entspricht die Ausgabe der heute allgemein akzeptierten Überzeugung, dass alle Stationen des Entstehungsprozesses bzw. der vom Komponisten verantworteten Verbreitung (Skizzen, Fassungen, selbstverfasste Versionen wie Klavierauszüge) zum Werk selbst gehören.

Diese Auffassung trifft ganz besonders in der spezifischen musik­ historischen Situation zu, in der Mendelssohn sich befand und die ihn dazu führte, den ästhetischen Anspruch des autonomen, ein für allemal abgeschlossenen Kunstwerks in ganz unterschiedlichen Graden der Vollendung zu realisieren. Davon legen die unterschiedlichen Fassungen zahlreicher Werke Zeugnis ab, aber

auch die Tatsache, dass der Komponist selbst viele abgeschlossene Kompositionen nicht der Veröffentlichung für wert hielt.

Dies stellt die differenzierende Hermeneutik der Quellen, die den editorischen Entscheidungen vorangehen muss, ebenso wie die editorische Pragmatik vor besonders schwierige Aufgaben, eröffnet aber auch die Chance, hinsichtlich von unfertigen oder unvollendeten Kompositionen beispielgebende Verfahrensweisen der Edition zu entwickeln.

Eine besondere Problematik ergibt sich daraus, dass Mendelssohn nur den von ihm veröffentlichten oder zur Veröffentlichung vorbereiteten Werken Opuszahlen beigegeben hat, viele seiner Werke also ohne autorisierte Opuszahl überliefert sind.

Dennoch haben sich – zumal durch die oben genannte von Julius Rietz verantwortete Ausgabe – die Opuszahlen von 73 an fest eingebürgert. Dieser Tatsache trug die vorliegende Ausgabe bis zum Jahre 2009 Rechnung, indem diese Opuszahlen weiter benutzt, aber durch eckige Klammern gekennzeichnet wurden.

Seit Erscheinen des Werkverzeichnisses (MWV) wird für die postum veröffentlichten Werke nur noch die dort eingeführte MWV-Bezeichnung verwendet.

Die Ausgabe erscheint in 13 Serien: Serie I Orchesterwerke Serie II Konzerte und Konzertstücke Serie III Kammermusikwerke Serie IV Klavier- und Orgelwerke Serie V Bühnenwerke Serie VI Geistliche Vokalwerke Serie VII Weltliche Vokalwerke Serie VIII Skizzen und Fragmente, die den in den Serien I bis VII veröffentlichten Werken nicht zugeordnet werden können; zusammen­hängende Skizzenkonvolute Serie IX Bearbeitungen und Instrumentationen Serie X Zeichnungen und Aquarelle Serie XI Briefe, Schriften und Tagebücher Serie XII Dokumente zur Lebensgeschichte Serie XIII Werkverzeichnis Die Werke bzw. diejenigen Fassungen der Kompositionen, denen Werkcharakter zukommt, erscheinen in den Hauptbänden, die auch den Kritischen Bericht enthalten. Sekundäre Fassungen, Klavierauszüge und Skizzen zu den Werken der Serien I bis VII werden in Supplementbänden vorgelegt; bei geringem Skizzenbestand kann dieser dem Kritischen Bericht angefügt werden.

Dem jeweiligen Status der Werkgenese entsprechend wird zwischen drei Typen der editorischen Präsentation unterschieden: –– Die Werkedition, deren Grundsätze der ausführlicheren Erläuterung bedürfen, gilt für die Hauptbände der Serien I bis VII und IX, gegebenenfalls auch für Supplementbände.

–– Die Inhaltsedition kommt in den Supplementbänden der Serien I bis VII und IX (z. B. fertige, aber nicht zum Druck bestimmte Fassungen) und in Bänden der Serie VIII (z. B. Fragmente in Reinschrift) zur Anwendung. Die Inhaltsedition hält sich streng an den Text der Quelle. Korrigiert werden lediglich offenkundige Versehen, über die im Kritischen Bericht referiert wird.

–– Die Quellenedition gilt in erster Linie für Skizzen und Entwürfe. Der Abdruck ist diplomatisch, nicht jedoch stets zeilen­ getreu; Zeilenwechsel im Original werden durch geeignete Zusatzzeichen angezeigt.

IX Zur Werkedition

Zum Kritischen Bericht

Die Edition der Werke in den Hauptbänden stellt das Ergebnis der umfassenden philologischen Sichtung und Interpretation durch den Herausgeber dar. Abweichungen von der Hauptquelle werden entweder durch die Kennzeichnung im Notentext (eckige Klammern oder Strichelung, Fußnoten), durch die Erläuterung im Kritischen Bericht oder – bei besonders gravierenden Eingriffen – durch beides angezeigt.

Darüber hinaus gelten für die Werkedition folgende Prinzipien: –– Die Partituranordnung und die Notation entsprechen den heute gültigen Regeln.

–– Die Schlüsselung der Vokalstimmen wird der heute üblichen Praxis angeglichen.

–– Die Instrumente werden durchweg mit italienischen Namen bezeichnet. Dagegen werden bei den Vokalstimmen entweder deutsche (deutscher oder lateinischer Text) oder englische Bezeichnungen (englischer Text) verwendet; nur für den Fall, dass der Text der Vokalstimmen zweisprachig, d. h. beispielsweise deutsch und englisch wiedergegeben werden muss, bietet die italienische Bezeichnung der Singstimmen einen gangbaren Kompromiss.

–– Orthographie und Silbentrennung verbaler Texte werden den heutigen Regeln angepasst, doch bleiben originale Lautfolge und charakteristische Wortformen gewahrt.

–– Abbreviaturen (auch solche für nicht ausgeschriebene Stimmen in Partitur-Manuskripten, wie z. B. „c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta“) werden im Allgemeinen stillschweigend aufgelöst. Über Abweichungen oder Besonderheiten hinsichtlich dieser Prinzipien wird im Kritischen Bericht Rechenschaft abgelegt.

Der Kritische Bericht, der in den Hauptbänden – soweit es der Umfang erlaubt – immer, in den Supplementbänden jedoch nur gelegentlich dem Notentext folgt, bietet die philologische Argumentation für den vorgelegten Text und weist die Quellen aus, aufgrund derer die editorischen Entscheidungen getroffen wurden. Er enthält die folgenden konstitutiven Abschnitte: –– Verzeichnis der im Kritischen Bericht verwendeten Abkürzungen; –– Quellenbeschreibung; –– Auflistung der textkritisch nicht relevanten Lesarten einzelner Quellen, insbesondere Korrekturverzeichnisse bei autographen Quellen; –– Quellenbewertung; –– Erläuterung der speziellen editorischen Verfahren des jeweiligen Bandes; –– Textkritische Anmerkungen, die über Einzelentscheidungen des Herausgebers Rechenschaft ablegen.

Preface The Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is intended to afford public access to all the available compositions, letters, writings and other documents relating to the artistic work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in an appropriately scholarly form. As a historico-critical edition, it aims to be of equal value to researchers and practicing musicians alike.

The musical works take pride of place. Next to completed compositions in all their versions, the Leipzig Edition also presents the sources underlying the creative process (sketches and drafts) as well as unfinished compositions (fragments). In addition, Mendelssohn’s letters are extremely important. It is generally acknowledged that reliably edited correspondence is indispensable for the scholarly study of any composer’s work.

In Mendelssohn’s case, however, the correspondence is of particular significance, not only because it reveals the composer to be an outstanding witness of his time, but also because of the exceptional literary merit of many of his letters. Finally, if one wishes to provide a comprehensive picture of Mendelssohn as an artist, his pictorial works of art, principally drawings and watercolors, cannot be overlooked. A thematic-systematic cata­ logue of his musical works (MWV) was published in a study edition in 2009 and helps provide quick access to the composer’s entire life’s work.

A comprehensive study like this hardly calls for lengthy justification, given both Mendelssohn’s importance as a composer and his neglect by the scholarly and musical world alike, essentially attributable to non-artistic motives. The edition of Mendelssohn’s works published by Julius Rietz between 1874 and 1877 and often erroneously referred to as Alte Gesamtausgabe, was anything but complete, and unlike the Old Bach Edition, for example, was not compiled with any intention of presenting Mendelssohn’s complete works, hence its modest title, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchge­sehene Ausgabe. As a consequence of Rietz’s selection, a consider­able amount of Mendelssohn’s compositions still awaits publi­ cation to this day, while others have been published only in an inadequate form. The few volumes of the new edition which have been published since 1960 by Deutscher Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, have failed to make any major change to this state of affairs.

As regards the chronological arrangement of the compositions to be edited, the present publication conforms to this Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, but generally takes account of the latest principles governing the publication of complete scholarly editions. This refers in particular to the tenet that all the editor’s decisions – whether relating to the score itself or to the Kritischer Bericht (Critical Report) – must be clearly stated and made accessible to the critical understanding of the user. In addition, the edition conforms to the view generally accepted today that every stage of the composing process or of the publication attributable to the composer himself (sketches, different versions, his own transcriptions such as piano scores) forms part of the work itself.

This view is particularly pertinent in the light of the specific musico-historical situation in Mendelssohn’s day, which led him to fulfill the aesthetic demands attendant on a definitive, self-contained work of art in highly differing degrees of perfection. This is evidenced not only by the differing versions of

numerous works, but also by the fact that the composer himself considered many completed works not worth publishing. This hampers a differentiating hermeneutic approach to the sources, which must precede any editorial decision, and a pragmatic approach on the part of the editor. At the same time, however, it provides an opportunity for the development of exemplary methods for the editing of unfinished or otherwise incomplete compositions.

A particularly problematic situation results from the fact that Mendelssohn only gave opus numbers to the works which he published or prepared for publication. Many of his works have thus come down to us without authorized opus numbers.

Nevertheless, the opus numbers from 73 onward have long since come into general use, in part through the aforementioned edition supervised by Julius Rietz. The present edition took this into account until the year 2009 by continuing to use these opus numbers, albeit placing them between square brackets. Since the publication of the Thematic Catalogue (MWV), only the MWV designation introduced there will be used to identify the posthumously published works.

The publication will appear in thirteen series, i.e.

Series I Orchestral Works Series II Concertos and Concert Pieces Series III Chamber Music Series IV Piano and Organ Works Series V Stage Works Series VI Sacred Vocal Works Series VII Secular Vocal Works Series VIII Sketches and fragments which cannot be assigned to the works published in series I to VII; associated groups of sketches Series IX Arrangements and Orchestrations Series X Drawings and Watercolors Series XI Letters, Writings and Diaries Series XII Documents relating to Mendelssohn’s life Series XIII Thematic Catalogue of Works The works or those versions of the compositions which can be attributed the status of a work will appear in the main volumes, which will also contain the Kritischer Bericht. Secondary versions, piano scores and sketches relating to the works in series I – VII will be presented in supplementary volumes. In cases where only a small number of sketches are available, these may be included in the Kritischer Bericht.

Three forms of editorial presentation are distinguished, corresponding to the respective genesis of the work, as follows.

–– The Edition of W orks, the principles of which call for a detailed explanation, will apply to the main volumes of series I – VII and IX, and, if indicated, to the supplementary volumes.

–– The Edition of Content, which usually will apply to the supplementary volumes to series I – VII and IX (e.g. finished but unprinted versions) and volumes of series VIII (e.g. fair copies of fragments). The edition of content will strictly adhere to the source texts. Only obvious mistakes will be corrected, and these will be referred to in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– The Edition of Sources relates primarily to sketches and drafts.

Reproductions will be faithful, but lines may in some cases be arranged in a different way; line changes in the original will be indicated by suitable supplementary symbols.

XI Edition of Works

Kritischer Bericht (Critical Report)

The editing of works in the main volumes represents the results of an exhaustive philological study and its interpretation by the editor. Divergences from the principal source will be indicated either by markings in the score (square brackets or broken lines, footnotes), with an explanation in the Kritischer Bericht, or – in particularly serious cases – by both.

In addition, the following principles apply to the edition of works: –– The arrangement of the score and the notation comply with present-day standards.

–– The keys for the vocal parts are adjusted in accordance with conventional present-day practice.

–– The instruments are designated by their Italian names throughout. By contrast, German terms are used for the vocal parts (where the words are in German or Latin), or English terms (where the words are in English); only in such cases where the text of the vocal parts is rendered bilingually (for example in German and in English), voice designations in Italian are used as a viable compromise.

–– The spelling and syllabification of verbal texts are adapted in accordance with present-day rules, but the original phonetic sequence and characteristic word forms are retained.

–– Abbreviations (including those for parts which are not completely written out in score manuscripts, such as “c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta”), are in general tacitly written out in full.

An explanation of any divergence from these principles or peculiarities in their use is given in the Kritischer Bericht.

The Kritischer Bericht which, space permitting, always follows the score in the main volumes and, if appropriate, also in the supplementary volumes, presents the philological legitimation of the text as printed and indicates the sources on which the editorial decisions are based. It contains the following essential paragraphs: –– List of abbreviations used in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– Description of sources.

–– A list of the text-critically non-relevant readings of individual sources, particularly indexes of corrections in the case of manuscript sources.

–– Evaluation of sources.

–– An explanation of the particular editing methods for the respec­tive volume.

–– Text-critical remarks which account for individual decisions by the editor.

Einleitung Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys Violinkonzert e-Moll op. 64 MWV O 14 ist sein letzter und zugleich bedeutendster Beitrag zur Gattung Solokonzert. Von dem in zwei Fassungen überlieferten Werk dokumentiert der vorliegende Band die Früh­fassung, wie sie in der autographen Partitur einschließlich aller Korrekturen niedergeschrieben und mit Schlussdatum vom 16. September 1844 versehen wurde. Außerdem werden diplomatische Übertragungen aller erhaltenen Skizzen und Entwürfe zum Werk wiedergegeben. Die vom Komponisten 1845 zur Publikation freigegebene Hauptfassung erscheint in Serie II, Band 7 dieser Ausgabe, wo zudem ausführlich auf die Umstände der Drucklegung und der frühen Rezeption eingegangen wird.

Inspiration und kompositorische Anfänge Bis zur Veröffentlichung seines Violinkonzerts 1845 hatte Mendelssohn hauptsächlich klavierkonzertante Werke verfasst.

Für Violine als Soloinstrument waren neben einigen kammermusikalischen Versuchen und Übungsstücken aus den frühen 1820er Jahren noch eine Sonate op. 4 MWV Q 12 sowie zwei konzertante Werke entstanden: das Konzert d-Moll für Violine und Streichorchester MWV O 3 aus dem Jahre 1822 und das in derselben Tonart stehende Doppelkonzert für Violine, Klavier und Orchester MWV O 4 von 1823; beide erschienen zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten allerdings nicht im Druck. Alle diese frühen Werke schrieb Mendelssohn vor dem Hintergrund seiner engen Freundschaft zu dem ausgezeichneten Geiger Eduard Ritz (1802–1832), einige wurden sogar direkt für diesen komponiert und ihm bisweilen auch dediziert. Nach Ritz’ frühem Tod verlor die Violine als Soloinstrument in Mendelssohns Schaffen vorübergehend an Bedeutung. Erst durch die Bitte eines anderen Geigers wurde das Interesse des Komponisten an der ernsthaften Auseinandersetzung mit Gestalt und Funktion eines Violinkonzerts neu geweckt. Ferdinand David (1810–1873), mit dem Mendelssohn seit seiner Jugend in Berlin befreundet war und dem er im Februar 1836 zum Amt des Konzertmeisters am Leipziger Gewandhausorchester verholfen hatte, inspirierte den Komponisten aufs Neue und wurde zum einflussreichen Ratgeber bei der Entstehung weiterer Werke für Violine. Mendelssohn schrieb zunächst eine große Violinsonate mit Klavierbegleitung in F-Dur (MWV Q 26) für seinen Freund, die er noch in der Wintersaison 1838/1839 mit ihm zu spielen gedachte.1 Doch führte die Überarbeitung des

mit 15. Juni 1838 datierten Werkes zu keinem endgültigen Resultat. Fragmente der Revision zeigen die Anstrengungen des Komponisten, den Kopfsatz in der zu jener Zeit erwarteten hohen spieltechnischen Brillanz zu fassen.

Ein Brief vom 30. Juli 1838 belegt, dass sich Mendelssohn zur selben Zeit mit dem Gedanken trug, auch ein Violinkonzert für David zu komponieren, und dass ferner der Plan bestand, das Werk bereits in der Konzertsaison 1838/1839 aufführen zu lassen: „Ich möchte Dir wohl auch ein Violin Concert machen für nächsten Winter; eins in e moll steckt mir im Kopfe, dessen Anfang mir keine Ruhe läßt.“2 David begrüßte die Absicht seines Freundes und ließ ihn am 3. August 1838 wissen: „Aber wenn Du ein Conzert für die Geige in e moll schreibst (was natürlich die leise Hoffnung auf einiges e dur in mir erwect), so bist Du der himlischste Mensch, ich verspreche Dir es so einzuüben, daß sich die Engel im Himmel freun sollen.“3 Das in Aussicht gestellte Konzert sollte David nicht nur zum Zeichen besonderer Wertschätzung durch den Komponisten gereichen.

Es eröffnete ihm zugleich die hochwillkommene Gelegenheit zur Repertoireerweiterung. Wie die meisten Virtuosen jener Zeit komponierte auch David die Werke, mit denen er solistisch auftrat, größtenteils selbst, und ließ dabei die Eigenheiten seines Spiels und seiner Begabung besonders eindrucksvoll hervortreten. Sein mit zahlreichen Doppelgriffen gespicktes 1. Violin­konzert e-Moll op. 10 aus dem Jahr 1839 legt hiervon ein deutliches Zeugnis ab. Die reine Betonung des virtuosen Elements befriedigte David allerdings nur eine gewisse Zeit, und so suchte er nach neuen, musikalisch anspruchsvolleren Werken. Bei der Rückkehr von seiner ersten Konzertreise durch England im Juni 1839 erschien ihm dieses Problem virulenter denn je, zumal Mendelssohn die Fertigstellung des avisierten Konzerts nicht wie geplant vorantrieb.

So forderte David am 16. Juli 1839, fast auf den Tag genau ein Jahr, nachdem er erstmals von Mendelssohns Kompositionsplänen erfahren hatte, nun endlich Ergebnisse ein: „Ich lebe hier jetzt ganz einsam […] und ich komponire in der Verzweiflung Conzerte u. Variationen, komme aber noch mit nichts recht in den Zug. Besonders kann ich mit der Form eines Conzerts nicht ins Reine kommen; in 3 Sätzen mag ich keins schreiben (vielleicht weil ichs nicht kann) u. bei denen in einem Satze befriedigt mich die Form des ersten Stücks nicht, Du versteht das, wie so manches Andere aus dem Grunde, u. hast es in Deinen beyden Conzerten (von denen mir beyläufig gesagt jetzt das

zweyte immer mehr gefällt) bewiesen, aber der Teufel mache Dirs nach.4 Ich möchte jetzt so gerne einmal wieder etwas Neues von Jemand Andrem spielen aber es ist ein wahrer Jammer daß auch nicht ein vernünftiges Stück erscheint. Erbarme Du Dich doch u. schreibe ein Violinkonzert, Du hast ja den Klavierspielern Orchestern Chören Klarinetten u. Bassethörnern schon so manches Liebe erzeigt. Thu auch einmal etwas für uns, besonders für mich; Du bist der rechte Mann dazu, es kostet Dich 14 Tage u. Du erntest eine ewige Dankbarkeit; aber thu es bald ehe meine Finger steif werden und der springende Bogen das Podagra bekommt.“5 Mendelssohns Antwortschreiben macht klar, dass er sich in der Zwischenzeit nicht weiter mit der Komposition befasst hatte, und deutet sogar den Grund hierfür an: „Das ist gar zu hübsch von Dir, daß Du mich zu einem Violin Concert stempeln willst; ich habe die allergrößte Lust Dir eins zu machen, und wenn ich ein Paar gutgelaunte Tage hier habe, so bringe ich Dir etwas der Art mit. Aber leicht ist die Aufgabe freilich nicht; brillant willst Du’s haben, und wie fängt unser einer das an? Das ganze erste Solo soll aus dem hohen e bestehn.“6 Die Erwähnung des Tones „e“, der für das spätere Hauptthema des ersten Satzes so charakteristisch werden sollte, lässt vermuten, dass eine vage Themenformulierung bereits existierte. Die Schwierigkeiten mit einer als „brillant“ bezeichneten virtuosen Ausführung weisen beziehungsreich zurück zur unvollendeten Sonate in F-Dur MWV Q 26.

Fortgang der Komposition Nach diesem Insistieren des Freundes beschäftigte sich Mendelssohn noch in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 1839 intensiv mit dem Violinkonzert. Der erste Beweis seiner kompositorischen Arbeit ist die briefliche Reminiszenz des Londoner Musik­ kritikers Henry Fothergill Chorley (1808–1872), der sich vom

1. bis 15. Oktober 1839 in Leipzig aufhielt.7 Sie betrifft aber bezeichnenderweise nicht den Kopfsatz, sondern das Finale des Konzerts. Chorley behielt dessen Beginn, den Mendelssohn ihm vorgespielt haben muss, so intensiv im Gedächtnis, dass es ihm möglich war, ihn in einem späteren Brief an Mendelssohn . zu zitieren: # # # # œ . º œ œ œ œ. œ. œ œ . º œ œ œ œ œ &c. &c. ?“8 G „What has become of

Auch eine noch viel spätere Nachfrage Ferdinand Davids, in welcher dieser das bereits jahrelang versprochene Konzert scherzhaft als „antediluvianisch“ (also als vorsintflutlich) bezeichnete, wiederholt dieses Zitat des Finale-Hauptthemas leicht variiert9, was die Vermutung stützt, dass Mendelssohn seine Komposition vom Schluss-Satz aus begann und sich mit den Vorgaben für den Kopfsatz – „brillant“ und „Das ganze erste Solo […] aus dem hohen e […]“10 – deutlich schwerer tat. Erst am 21. Juli 1840 vermochte Mendelssohn Chorley mitzuteilen: „I am now finishing the concerto […], of which you recollected the last movement so perfectly.“11 Diese Formulierung sagt hingegen noch nichts über die tatsächliche Niederschrift des Konzerts aus, da Mendelssohn für gewöhnlich seine Kompositionen fast vollständig im Gedächtnis ausführte und speicherte, bevor er eine Partitur zu Papier brachte.12 Auch hier lässt sich diese gängige Praxis erkennen, denn es wurde zunächst wieder still um das Violinkonzert. Es sollten fast vier Jahre vergehen, bis Mendelssohn die Arbeit erneut aufnahm. Zuvor hatte David im Mai 1843 wiederum, diesmal in einem spaßig in der „Sie“-Form verfassten Brief, mit spitzer Feder nach dem lange erwarteten und schon fast aufgegebenen Konzert gefragt: „[…] Sie erwerben sich dadurch den Dank der ganzen civilisirten Violin=Welt [für erzieherische Maßnahmen an einem faulen Violin-Schüler des Konservatoriums] die Ihnen ja schon durch Ihre lang gehegte Absicht ein Violin Concert zu komponiren zu ewigem

Dank verpflichtet zu sein beabsicht[igt] und wohl auch ewig beabsichtigen wird, bei welcher Gelegenheit ich nicht verfehle diejenigen Gesinnungen zu verschweigen, deren Aussprechung das Papier nicht groß genug ist […].“13 Davids ausdauerndes Drängen wurde schließlich belohnt. Die autographe Partitur des Violinkonzerts trägt als Schlussdatum den 16. September 1844 und war während Mendelssohns Aufenthalt in Bad Soden bei Frankfurt am Main mit zahlreichen, im Autograph noch heute erkennbaren Korrekturen zu einem vorläufigen Ende gebracht worden. Angesichts der Verwendung einer helleren Tinte für die Korrekturen und das Schlussdatum muss zumindest von einem gewissen zeitlichen Abstand zur Erstniederschrift ausgegangen werden. Mendelssohn überreichte David sein Werk schließlich bei einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Leipzig, am 28. oder 29. September 1844,14 zusammen mit „mancherlei Neuem“15 und gab ihm außerdem den Auftrag, das fertige Manuskript an den Leipziger Notenkopisten Amadeus Eduard Anton Henschke (1804–1854) weiterzureichen, was auch umgehend geschah. Bereits wenige Tage darauf erhielt David die ausgeschriebene Prinzipalstimme von dem Kopisten, anhand derer er das Werk für sich einzustudieren begann.

Und schon eine reichliche Woche nachdem das Manuskript aus Mendelssohns Händen in die seinen gelangt war, konnte der Geiger begeistert an den Komponisten schreiben: „Dein Violin Conzert ist herrlich, 1000 mal besser als alles was wir armen Geiger zusammenstoppeln.“16 Wegen zahlreicher anderer Arbeiten für die nahende Michaelis-Messe, eine große Leipziger Handelsmesse im Oktober 1844, kam Henschke mit dem weiteren Abschreiben allerdings nur schleppend voran, wie David, der für den in Berlin weilenden Komponisten einen Großteil der notwendigen Unterhandlungen führte, berichtete.17 In der Zwischenzeit aber setzte Mendelssohn die Arbeit an dem Werk fort und bat um Rücksendung der Partitur. David bemühte sich sogleich, dem Wunsch des Komponisten nachzukommen: „Durch Hr Döhler

schicke ich dir das Violin Conzert, welches Du, wie Dr Härtel mir sagt, jetzt gebrauchst. Henschke, dem ich es damals gleich zum Abschreiben gab hat bis jetzt nur die Prinzipal Stime zu Stande gebracht, da er in der Messe zu viel anderweitig zu thun hat. Sei also so freundlich es mir baldmöglichst zurück zu schicken damit ich die Orch: St. aus u. die Partitur für Dich kann abschreiben lassen.“18 Welche Änderungen konkret an der Partitur vorgenommen wurden, ob es sich dabei um die geringfügigen Bleistift-Korrekturen Mendelssohns in der Prinzipalstimme des ersten Satzes oder die wenigen Rötel-Eintragungen handelt, lässt sich nicht mit Sicherheit bestimmen. Aufschluss darüber könnte nur die zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits ausgeschriebene Prinzipalstimme geben, die aber als verschollen gelten muss. Am 5. November 1844 schließlich teilte Mendelssohn nach London an Carl Klingemann mit, er habe „ein früher angefangenes Violin-Konzert ganz vollendet“19, und ließ zugleich David durch Heinrich Conrad Schleinitz (1802–1881) die Bitte übermitteln, ihm bei seinem Besuch in Leipzig Ende des Monats das Werk mit Orchester vorzuspielen,20 um es erstmals in seiner Gesamtheit hören zu können. David versprach umgehend, eine Durchspielprobe zu arrangieren: „Dein Conzert will ich Dir vorspielen wenn Du herkommst; Die Partitur liegt für Dich bereit, es ist doch schwerer als ich im ersten Augenblick glaubte.“21 Der Kopist Henschke hatte in der Zwischenzeit die autographe Partitur von Mendelssohn zurückerhalten und konnte seine Abschrift beenden. 22 Das Versprechen eines Vorspiels löste David ein, als Mendelssohn am 30. November für vier Tage in die Pleißestadt kam. Die Probe im Gewandhaus mit der Vorstellung des Violinkonzerts fand an einem dieser Tage statt.

Nach einer eintägigen Visite am Dresdner Hof am 4. Dezember und der sich unmittelbar anschließenden überstürzten Abreise aus Leipzig23 zu seiner Familie nach Frankfurt am Main verbrachte Mendelssohn die darauffolgende Zeit mit Frau und Kindern im Haus der Familie Souchay. Von dort schrieb er zehn

Tage später an seine Schwester Fanny Hensel: „Mein Violin-­ Concert habe ich jetzt in Ordnung gebracht ud. beendigt, es soll nun bei Härtels gedruckt werden, David spielte es mir in Leipzig in einer Probe vor, ud. ich hoffe es würde Dir gefallen.“24 Vorbereitungen zur Uraufführung und der Einfluss Ferdinand Davids In Anbetracht des erheblichen Zeitraumes, den die Entstehung des Violinkonzerts beanspruchte, erstaunt die Tatsache, dass die Mithilfe Ferdinand Davids bei substantiellen Fragen des Werkes erst zu jenem Zeitpunkt ansetzt, als die Frühfassung fertig abschriftlich vorlag. An der Fassung von 1844 hat David somit keinerlei inhaltlichen Anteil. In der erwähnten Probe im Gewandhaus spielte er aus der von Henschke zuerst ausgeschriebenen Prinzipalstimme. Allem Anschein nach wurde er bei seinem Vortrag vom gesamten Orchester begleitet, denn es lag mit den von Henschke gefertigten Dubletten der Stimmen ausreichendes Aufführungsmaterial vor. Über die Art des Spiels – ob mit Unterbrechungen, ob mit bereits von David vorgenommenen Änderungen oder notengetreu nach der Kopie Henschkes – lässt sich nichts Genaues sagen. Tatsache ist, dass Mendelssohn nach dieser Probe die Kopistenpartitur, und nicht das Autograph, mit nach Frankfurt nahm und dort in starkem Maße überarbeitete.

Die autographe Partitur spielt im gesamten weiteren Verlauf der Werkgeschichte bis hin zur Uraufführung und Drucklegung keine Rolle mehr. Einem Brief Mendelssohns an den Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel zufolge war das Manuskript – vermutlich seit jener Probe in Leipzig – in den Privatbesitz Davids übergegangen.25 Aus der Henschke-Partitur kann man nun einerseits entnehmen, welche Änderungen bis hin zur Hauptfassung dezidiert von Mendelssohn stammen und was – fast lückenlos belegt durch den erhaltenen Briefwechsel zwischen David und Mendelssohn in jenen Monaten – durch Davids Vorschläge hinzukam. Andererseits muss die Frage offen bleiben, welchen Einfluss der Vortrag des Geigers in der Gewandhausprobe auf diese Umarbeitung hatte. Auch wenn dafür keinerlei schriftliche Belege vorhanden sind, kann man davon ausgehen, dass spieltechnische Schwierigkeiten und entsprechende Änderungsvorschläge bereits vor Ort besprochen worden sind. Mendelssohns grundlegende Revision erfolgte jedoch in Frankfurt in der Zeit bis zur Übersendung der Partitur nach Leipzig am 17. Dezem-

ber 1844. Von diesem Moment an begann ein intensiver und in Briefen dokumentierter Austausch von Vorschlägen und Gegenvorschlägen zwischen David und Mendelssohn bis hin zur Drucklegung. Auch wenn es dabei um vergleichsweise wenige Diskussionspunkte – noch dazu aus einem relativ späten Stadium der Werkentstehung – geht, so erscheinen diese seltenen Zeugnisse der Zusammenarbeit von Komponist und Interpret für die Beurteilung von Mendelssohns Schaffensprozess doch äußerst zentral. Erhalten haben sich Briefe aus der Zeit vor Abgabe der Stichvorlage an Breitkopf & Härtel sowie nach Durchsicht der ersten Korrekturfahnen; abgeschlossen wurden sie mit letzten Hinweisen nach der Uraufführung.26 Mendelssohn eröffnete die Korrespondenz mit den Worten: „Ich habe heut eine Bitte an Dich. An Breitkopf & Härtel habe ich jetzt die Partitur des Violin-Concertes geschickt, und noch mancherlei mit Bleistift darin geändert, was Henschke in den Stimmen ändern soll.

Auch in der Principalstimme sind manche Aenderungen, ud. wie ich hoffe Verbesserungen. Über alles das hätte ich nun gar zu gern Deine Meinung, ehe ich es der unwiderruflichen Oeffentlichkeit übergebe. Wäre ich dort, so kämst Du mit einigen Nachmittagsvisiten los, so aber muß ich Dich bitten schreibe mir recht genau darüber hieher.“27 Von beachtlicher Tragweite erscheinen Davids Anmerkungen zur Gestaltung der Solokadenz im ersten Satz; an ihr zeigen sich ganz besonders die Unterschiede zwischen Früh- und Hauptfassung des Konzerts.28 Einige Ergebnisse der Zusammenarbeit mit David, besonders hinsichtlich der Solokadenz, lassen sich teilweise anhand der mehrschichtigen Korrekturen belegen, die Mendelssohn in der Henschke-Partitur vornahm. Daraus wiederum kann man folgern, dass ihm die Partitur zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt nochmals vorlag.

Der aus dem Briefwechsel zu erschließende Einfluss Davids auf die inhaltlichen Belange des Werkes besteht vorrangig in spieltechnischen und klanglichen Optimierungen der Prinzipalstimme sowie im späteren Stadium der Drucklegung in der Festlegung von Stricharten und Fingersätzen.29 Ferdinand David besaß bereits vor der Uraufführung im Leipziger Gewandhaus, die innerhalb des letzten Abonnement-Konzerts der Saison am 13. März 1845 stattfand, einen ersten Korrekturabzug seiner Stimme vom Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel,30 in den er weitere Änderungen eintrug. Er versprach Mendelssohn brieflich: „Gleich nachdem ich es gespielt bekommst Du die sämtliche Orchesterstimen nebst meiner Prinzipalstime in die ich alles, genau wie

ich es spiele, verzeichne, Du kannst dann nach eignem Gutdünken daraus in das reine Correktur-Exemplar, welches beiliegen wird, hinein thun.“31 Der heute verschollene annotierte Korrekturabzug der Prinzipalstimme war somit das Uraufführungsmaterial des Solisten. Für das Orchester standen vorerst nur die Dubletten Henschkes mit sämtlichen Nachträgen aller hinzugekommenen Korrekturen zur Verfügung, während der Kapellmeister Niels W. Gade mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit aus Henschkes Partitur dirigierte. Die autographe Partitur hin­ gegen, in welche David später missverständlich notierte „Zum ersten Male als Manuscript gespielt | im letzten Abonnement Concert am 13.t[en] März 1845“32, spielte für die Uraufführung keine Rolle mehr, denn sie repräsentierte eine zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits überholte Fassung des Werkes.

Die weiteren Entwicklungen, die das Violinkonzert im Vorfeld der Uraufführung nahm und die im Briefwechsel zwischen dem Verlag, David und Mendelssohn nachvollziehbar sind, werden als Bestandteil der Geschichte der Drucklegung des Violinkonzerts im Hauptband besprochen. 33 *** Der vorliegende Band hat eine längere Entstehungsgeschichte.

Im Jahr 2009 wurde er in seinen Grundzügen von Salome Reiser konzipiert, die während ihrer Zeit als Mitarbeiterin der Mendelssohn-Gesamtausgabe etwa die Hälfte der Editionsarbeiten leistete. Sie schloss die Satzvorlage des Notentextes sowie die Skizzenübertragung ab, autopsierte die Quellen in Kraków und Berlin und legte die Struktur des Kritischen Berichts mit der Vergabe der Quellensiglen fest. Ihr tragischer Tod verhinderte, dass sie den Band fertigstellen konnte. Auf Grundlage der Vorarbeiten von Salome Reiser überarbeitete die Unter-

zeichnende, die seit Beginn der Arbeit an diesem Band in das Projekt involviert war, die vorgefundenen Materialien unter Verwendung der aktuellen Editionsrichtlinien. Sie autopsierte Quellen in Oxford, erarbeitete den Kritischen Bericht sowie den Dokumentenanhang und erstellte die definitive Einleitung.

Den beiden Herausgeberinnen wurde bei der Arbeit an diesem Band vielfache Hilfe und Unterstützung zuteil. Introduction Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Violin Concerto in E minor op. 64 MWV O 14 is his final and, at the same time, most important contribution to the genre of the concerto for solo instrument and orchestra. The work has been transmitted in two versions; the present volume documents the early version, as it had been notated in the autograph score; it includes all the emendations and bears the closing date 16 September 1844.

Moreover, a number of diplomatic transcriptions of all surviving sketches and drafts of the work have also been reproduced here. The main version, which the composer approved for publication in 1845, is printed in Series II, Volume 7 of this edition, where the circumstances of the printing and early reception will be examined in detail.

The Work: Inspiration and Inception Up until the publication of his Violin Concerto in 1845, Mendelssohn had written chiefly concertante works for piano. A few chamber-music essays and practice pieces from the early 1820s, as well as the Sonata op. 4 MWV Q 12, were conceived for the violin as solo instrument, but only two concerto-like pieces from Mendelssohn’s earliest youth were created with this instrument in mind: the Concerto in D minor for violin and string orchestra MWV O 3 of 1822, and the Double Concerto, also in the same key, for violin, piano and orchestra MWV O 4 of 1823; neither, however, was published during the composer’s lifetime. Mendelssohn wrote all of these early works against the background of his very close friendship with the outstanding violinist Eduard Ritz (1802–1832); a few of them were written specifically for Ritz and dedicated to him as well. After Ritz’ early demise, the violin temporarily lost some of its significance in the composer’s oeuvre. Mendelssohn’s renewed interest in a serious approach to the form and function of a violin concerto was the result of a request made by another violinist: Ferdinand David (1810 –1873), with whom Mendelssohn had been friends since his youth in Berlin, and whom he had helped obtain the post of concertmaster at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in February 1836. David became a renewed source of inspiration for the composer and an influential adviser who played a considerable role in the inception of further works for the violin. Mendelssohn began by writing a large violin sonata with piano accompaniment in F major (MWV Q 26) for his friend, which he was intending to play with him in the win-

ter season 1838/1839.1 The revision of the work dated 15 June 1838 led to no conclusive results. Fragments of the revision reveal the composer’s efforts to cast the first movement into a technically brilliant, high-gloss work of the type expected from virtuoso performers back then.

A letter of 30 July 1838 affirms that Mendelssohn was considering the possibility of writing a violin concerto for David at that time as well, and that there was a plan to perform the work as early as the 1838/39 concert season: “I would also like to write a violin concerto for you for next winter; there is one in E minor, whose beginning I cannot get out of my head.”2 David welcomed his friend’s plan and told him on 3 August 1838: “But if you write a violin concerto in E minor (which obviously awakens the gentle hope of a certain amount of E major within me), then you would be the most divine of men, and I promise you to rehearse it so often that even the angels in heaven will be delighted.”3 The concerto proposed by Mendelssohn was not only intended as a sign of the composer’s exceptional appreciation for David; it also meant a highly welcome occasion for the violinist to expand his repertoire. Like the majority of the virtuosos of his day, David mostly wrote the works that he performed as a soloist himself, thus giving free rein to the unique, idiosyncratic style of writing that lets his talent shine and his playing dazzle. Sprinkled with a profusion of double stops, his Violin Concerto no. 1 in E minor op. 10 from the year 1839, bears exuberant testimony to this. The mere insistence on virtuosity did not satisfy David very long, however, and he soon began to look for new and musically more challenging works again. Upon the return from his first concert tour to England in June 1839, this problem had become more virulent than ever, especially since Mendelssohn did not step up his efforts to complete the concerto, as had been the original plan.

Thus on 16 July 1839, almost exactly one year after he had heard about Mendelssohn’s composition plans for the first time, David finally demanded results: “I am leading a very lonely existence here and composing concertos and variations in my despair, but I am still making very little progress. It is difficult for me to produce an adequate concerto form; I don’t want to write one in three movements (perhaps because I can’t) and as to those in one movement, the form of the opening section does not satisfy me. Like so many other things, you understand this, too, and have proven it in the two concertos (of which, incidentally, I am increasingly growing fond of Number 2). But face it, no one can

do this better than you.4 I long to play something new by Someone Else again, but it is a true shame how rarely a decent piece comes along. Have pity on me, at least, and write a concerto for the violin; you have shown what pianists, orchestras, choirs, clarinets and basset horns mean to you. So do something for us now, especially for me; you are the right man for this. It costs you two weeks’ time and you reap eternal gratitude. But do it quickly before my fingers become all stiff and the jumping bow gets podagra.”5 Mendelssohn’s reply makes it clear that he had not worked on the piece anymore in the meantime, and he even provides a reason for this: “It is very kind of you to want to note me down for a violin concerto; I would really love to write one for you, and if I am able to enjoy a few tranquil days here, then I shall write you such a piece. The task is not that simple, however; you want a brilliant piece, but how do we proceed here?

The entire first Solo is to consist of the high e.”6 The mention of the high note “e” which was to become so characteristic for the main theme of the first movement, suggests that a roughly formulated theme already existed. The difficulties concerning a virtuoso execution designated as “brilliant” refer in multiple ways to the unfinished Sonata in F major MWV Q 26.

The Composition Continues Thanks to his friend’s insistence, Mendelssohn began to work intensively on the Violin Concerto in the second half of 1839.

The first evidence of his compositional activity is a reminiscence found in a letter by the London music critic Henry Fothergill Chorley (1808–1872), who was sojourning in Leipzig from 1 to 15 October 1839.7 Significantly, it does not refer to the opening movement, but to the finale of the concerto. Chorley retained the beginning of this movement – which Mendelssohn must

have played to him – so vibrantly in his mind that he was able to quote it in a later letter to Mendelssohn: . # # # # œ . º œ œ œ œ. œ. œ œ . º œ œ œ œ œ &c. &c. ?”8 “What has become of G

Another, much later inquiry by Ferdinand David, in which he jokingly designated the concerto that had been promised for so many years now as antediluvian (thus before the Biblical Flood), repeats this quotation of the principal theme of the finale in a slightly varied manner.9 It supports the view that Mendelssohn had begun his work starting from the final movement and that he definitely had more trouble with the expression marks for the opening movement such as “brilliant” and “The entire first Solo […] from the high e […].”10 It was not until 21 July 1840 that Mendels­sohn was finally able to communicate to Chorley: “I am now finishing the concerto […], of which you recollected the last movement so perfectly.”11 This formulation, in turn, does not yet hint about an actual full draft of the concerto, since Mendelssohn usually elaborated his works almost entirely in his mind and stored them before notating down the score on music paper.12 This common practice can be observed here, too, for it grew still around the Violin Concerto. Four years were to elapse before Mendelssohn reprised his work on it again. Previously, in May 1843, with a caustic pen and sharp humor, and written in a letter penned in the polite “Sie” form, David jestingly asked about the long- awaited and almost abandoned piece: “[…] You will thus be reaping the thanks of the entire civilized Violin=World [through educational measures concerning a lazy violin student of the Conservatory], which has every intention of being obligated to eternal thanks through your long-cherished plan to compose a violin concerto, and thanks to which we shall no doubt be obligated to eternal thanks eternally, whereupon I shall not fail to

Mendelssohn excuses his long silence in his correspondence and towards his friend with the mention that he thought about him every day and “[…] thus merely the writing of the words is late, nothing else!” He cunningly compares this with compositions, whereby one can most certainly apply this to the Violin Concerto: “This is also found with the occasional musical piece that one really enjoys but that must ultimately come to light at the end […].”

keep silent about the reasons why one should finally have this concerto – reasons that are too extensive for this letter […].”13 David’s ceaseless hounding was finally rewarded: the autograph score of the Violin Concerto bears as its closing date 16 September 184414 and was brought to a provisional end during Mendelssohn’s stay in Bad Soden near Frankfurt am Main, with many emendations still recognizable today in the score. Owing to the use of a lighter-colored ink for the corrections and the completion dates, one can assume that a certain amount of time had elapsed between these corrections and the first full draft.

Finally, during a brief stay in Leipzig, Mendelssohn presented his work to David on 28 or 29 September 1844 together with “several new things”15 and, moreover, he entrusted David with the task of delivering the finished manuscript to the Leipzig music copyist Amadeus Eduard Anton Henschke (1804–1854), which then immediately took place. Just a few days later, David obtained from the copyist the solo part, now written out, on the basis of which he began to work on the piece for himself. And already a good week after the manuscript had passed from Mendelssohn’s hands into his own, the violinist wrote ecstatically to the composer: “Your Violin Concerto is magnificent, 1,000 times better than what we poor fiddlers can paste together.”16 The Michaelmas Fair (a major Leipzig commercial fair held in October 1844) was approaching, and many other projects demanded Henschke’s attention. The copyist did not make much progress, however, since he was tied up with many other tasks, as David reported;17 David himself was extremely busy as a sub-negotiator for Mendelssohn, who was then sojourning in Berlin. In the meantime, Mendelssohn continued his work on the concerto and asked to have the score sent back to him. David immediately tried to satisfy the composer’s wish: “Through Herr Döhler I am sending you the Violin Concerto which you, as Dr. Härtel tells me, now need. Henschke, to whom I had entrusted the score in order for him to copy it, has only recently

obtained the completed solo part, as he is too busy with other market-related tasks. Would you please be so kind as to send it back to me as soon as possible so that the orchestral parts and the score can be copied out of the score for you.”18 It is impossible to determine for sure what alterations were inserted in the score, whether these were the light pencil corrections of Mendelssohn’s in the solo part of the first movement or the few red-pencil (“Rötel”) entries. Information about this could only have been obtained from the solo part, which was already fully written out by then, even though it must now be considered as lost. Finally, on 5 November 1844, Mendelssohn informed Carl Klingemann in London that he had “fully completed a violin concerto begun a long time ago”19 and, at the same time, he passed along to David a request transmitted through Heinrich Conrad Schleinitz (1802–1881). The request was to perform it with orchestra during the composer’s visit to Leipzig at the end of the month, in order to be able to hear it in its entirety for the first time.20 David promised to arrange a run-through: “I would like to play you your concerto when you come to see us here; the score is ready for you, it is more difficult than I thought at first glance.”21 In the meantime the copyist Henschke received the autograph score and could now finish his transcription.22 The promise of a run-through was kept when Mendelssohn came to Leipzig for four days on 30 November.

The rehearsal in the Gewandhaus with the presentation of the Violin Concerto took place on one of those days.

After a one-day visit to the Dresden court on 4 December and his immediate and precipitous journey from Leipzig to his family in Frankfurt am Main,23 Mendelssohn spent the following days with his wife and children in the home of the Souchay family. From there he wrote ten days later to his sister Fanny Hensel: “I have arranged and completed my Violin Concerto, as it is scheduled for printing by Härtels. David played it to me at a rehearsal in Leipzig, and I hope that it will please you.”24

Preparations for the World Premiere: The Influence of Ferdinand David In view of the substantial amount of time involved in the genesis of the Violin Concerto, one is amazed by the circumstance that Ferdinand’s collaboration on vital matters concerning the work did not begin until the early version was finished in copy.

Thus David had nothing to do whatsoever with the contents of the version of 1844. At the aforementioned rehearsal in the Gewandhaus, he played from the solo part that Henschke had first written out. It seems that at this performance he was accompanied by the entire orchestra since – and thanks to the duplicates of the parts made by Henschke – there was enough usable performance material. As to whether the rehearsal was played with or without interruptions, with the corrections previously made by David or painstakingly faithful to Henschke’s copy – nothing conclusive can be said. The fact is that after this rehearsal, Mendelssohn took the copyist’s score and not the autograph with him to Frankfurt, where he radically revised it.

Thus during the entire further course of the work history, up until the first performance and publication, the autograph no longer played any role whatsoever. According to a letter posted

by Mendelssohn to the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, the manuscript had passed into David’s private collection,25 presumably since the Leipzig rehearsal. Using the Henschke score, it is possible to retrace which alterations undeniably stem from Mendelssohn himself, all the way up to the main version, and what was added as a result of David’s suggestions. This is confirmed nearly seamlessly through the surviving correspondence of those months between David and Mendelssohn. One major question must remain unanswered: the degree of influence that the violinist exerted on this revision at the Gewandhaus rehearsal. Even if no written evidence whatsoever has survived, it can be assumed that performance-technical problems and corresponding suggestions of alterations had already been discussed in Leipzig; Mendelssohn’s fundamental revision took place in Frankfurt, however, during the period ranging up to the posting of the score to Leipzig on 17 December 1844. This triggered an intensive exchange (documented in the correspondence) of suggestions and counter-suggestions between David and Mendelssohn that lasted until publication. Even if this concerns only relatively few discussion points – which, moreover, date from a rather late stage of the work’s origin – these rare tes-

timonies to the collaboration between composer and interpreter are of major and undeniable importance to the evaluation of Mendelssohn’s creative process. What has come down to us are letters dating from the time before the sending of the engraver’s copy to Breitkopf & Härtel, as well as following the corrections of the first galley proofs; this work was completed and provided with final markings after the world premiere.26 Mendelssohn initiated the correspondence with the words: “Today I have a request to make of you. I have just sent to Breitkopf & Härtel the score of the Violin Concerto, and have made a considerable amount of corrections every here and there in pencil, things that Henschke should also change in the parts. There are also several alterations – and, I hope, improvements – in the solo part as well. I would really love to hear your opinion before I entrust it to the hands of the irrevocable public. If I were there, you would wheedle your way out of this with a few afternoon visits; hence I must ask you to write very precisely about this to me here.”27 David’s comments about giving shape and form to the solo cadenza in the first movement appear to be particularly momentous; we can clearly see the differences between early and main versions of the concerto.28 A few results of the collaboration with David, and especially in view of the solo cadenza, can be established in part on the basis of the multi-layered corrections that Mendelssohn had carried out in the Henschke score. From here, in turn, it is possible to establish that the score had once again been in his possession at a later date.

David’s influence, which pertains to matters of musical contents and can be inferred from the correspondence, concerns mainly performance practice and suggests optimizations of the solo part as well as, in a later stage of the publication, the addition of bowings and fingerings.29 Even before the first performance at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, which took place during the last subscription concert of the season on 13 March 1845, David already owned a first set of proofs of his part from Breit­ kopf & Härtel, in which he introduced further alterations.30 He promised Mendelssohn by letter: “As soon as I have played it, the complete orchestral parts will be returned to you along with my solo part, in which I enter everything exactly as I play it. According to your disposition, you can then add something from this into the dedicated correction copy which will be enclosed.”31 The annotated proof copy of the solo part, which is lost today, thus served as the soloist’s premiere material. As to

the orchestra, only Henschke’s duplicates were available at first, with the complete subsequent entries of all corrections; the Kapellmeister Niels W. Gade was most likely conducting from Henschke’s score. The autograph score, in turn, in which David later confusingly noted “Played for the first time as manuscript / in the last subscription concert on 13 March 1845,”32 no longer played any role for the world premiere, for it represented a version of the work that was already obsolete at that time.

Further developments which the Violin Concerto underwent prior to the premier performance and which can be traced in the correspondence between the publishing house, David and Mendelssohn, will be discussed in the principal volume as a component of the Violin Concerto’s publication history.33 *** The present volume has a lengthy genesis. In 2009 its broad lines were conceived by Salome Reiser, who was responsible for about half of the editorial work during her years as staff member of the Mendelssohn Gesamtausgabe. She completed the page format of the musical text as well as the transcription of the sketches; she autopsied the sources in Kraków and Berlin, and definitively laid down the structure of the Critical Report with the assignment of the source sigla. Her tragic death prevented her from finishing the volume. On the basis of Salome Reiser’s preliminary work, the undersigned – who had been involved in this project since its inception – revised the material that Salome Reiser left behind and adapted it to the latest editorial guidelines. She autopsied sources in Oxford, prepared the
